Zedge (ZDGE) Q4 2026 earnings review
Zedge subscriptions and cash flow grow, but active users fall
Zedge, the operator of mobile wallpaper apps and creator communities, earned more from subscriptions even as its total audience shrank. Fourth-quarter revenue rose 4% to $7.8 million, while full-year free cash flow jumped 47% to $4.2 million after last year's layoffs. President Jonathan Reich noted that search traffic losses at its Emojipedia website cut full-year revenue growth by 3 percentage points.
| Fourth-quarter revenue | $7.8M +4.0% from a year ago |
|---|---|
| Active subscriptions | 1.33M +35.3% from a year ago |
| Monthly active users | 19.3M -16.8% from a year ago |
| Full-year free cash flow | $4.2M +46.6% from a year ago |
⚖️ Verdict: 🟢 Bullish
The story got better because Zedge turned its AI data unit into a funded priority while core subscriptions kept growing. After the quarter ended, the company hired chief executive Morris Berger and raised $7.7 million from insiders to expand DataSeeds.AI. One caution: Zedge paused share buybacks after the cash raise, and monthly active users in wealthier markets fell 22%.
The question now is whether DataSeeds can grow fast enough to matter before user losses cap subscription growth. Either the new funding turns AI data into a multi-million-dollar revenue stream, or it remains buried inside a shrinking $2 million segment while the core app loses users. Standalone DataSeeds revenue disclosure in fiscal 2027 will settle it.
🐂 Bull Case
Subscriptions and User Pricing Carry the Core App
Zedge runs a mobile app where users download phone wallpapers and ringtones. President and chief operating officer Jonathan Reich said "Our relentless focus on monetization improvement drove solid revenue gains, especially within our subscription offerings, where revenue grew nearly 30%." Instead of relying only on ads, the platform is converting more visitors into paying subscribers.
- Fourth-quarter subscription revenue: $1.8 million, up 25.6% from a year ago
- Active subscriptions: 1.33 million, up 35.3% from a year ago
- Average revenue per monthly active user (ARPMAU): $0.121, up 30.5% from a year ago
The company added 72,000 net new subscribers since the third quarter by our math. Because each remaining user pays more, marketplace revenue grows even while total visitor numbers fall.
What to watch: quarterly net new active subscriptions in fiscal 2027. A slowdown in additions would mean Zedge has already converted its easiest fans and cannot offset a shrinking audience.
Cost Cuts Turn Zedge Into a Cash Generator
Last year Zedge closed its Norway office and shrank its GuruShots photo-game staff. Those cuts lowered overhead this quarter, so operating margin swung from negative 9.6% a year ago to positive 3.3%. By our math, selling, general and administrative expenses—advertising and overhead—dropped by 5.5 percentage points of revenue to 87.0%.
Part of the swing came from lapping last year's restructuring charges, which took 7.3% of revenue a year ago. Even excluding those one-offs, operating margin improved by 5.3 percentage points by our math, and fourth-quarter free cash flow more than tripled to $1.6 million.
What to watch: selling, general and administrative expenses in the first quarter. Rising overhead as Zedge hires staff for its AI data unit would eat into the savings from last year's layoffs.
🐻 Bear Case
Monthly Active Users Keep Shrinking in Richer Markets
Monthly active users (MAU), the count of people opening the Zedge app over a 30-day window, fell 16.8% from a year ago to 19.3 million. The drop has lasted all year and worsened from the 11.2% decline in the first quarter. Management has focused on wealthier countries where advertisers pay higher rates, yet users in well-developed markets fell 22.2% to 4.2 million.
Emerging markets lost 15.2% of their audience, dropping to 15.1 million users. Rising revenue per user has masked the smaller crowd so far, but advertising impressions depend on how many people open the app. A shrinking user pool eventually caps how many subscriptions the company can sell.
What to watch: well-developed market active users next quarter. Another drop above 20% would show that marketing and product updates are failing to retain Zedge's most valuable audience.
AI Data Hopes Barely Move Segment Sales
New chief executive Morris Berger said "DataSeeds has the ingredients to become a meaningful growth business for Zedge." DataSeeds.AI is the company's business-to-business unit that sells rights-cleared image, audio and video datasets to train artificial intelligence models. Reich highlighted "establishing DataSeeds.AI as a commercial business, securing repeat orders from new and existing customers, including our first six-figure order."
Despite the upbeat commentary and an "initial model-evaluation engagement", Zedge does not break out DataSeeds revenue separately. Instead, it groups the unit inside Digital Goods and Services alongside the GuruShots photo game. That combined line shrank 2.2% in the fourth quarter to $0.4 million and fell 10.2% for the full year to $2.0 million, while direct cost of revenue rose 1.0 percentage point of sales.
What to watch: standalone revenue disclosure for DataSeeds in the annual filing or first-quarter results. Keeping it bundled inside a shrinking $0.4 million line would mean AI orders remain too small to move total sales.
Search Changes at Emojipedia Weigh on Ad Sales
Zedge owns Emojipedia, a reference website for emoji meanings that earns money from display advertising. Google search updates and artificial intelligence summaries now let users copy emojis directly from search results without visiting the site. Reich noted a "marked decline at Emojipedia that reduced our consolidated revenue growth by approximately 300 basis points" in fiscal 2026.
By our math, full-year company revenue would have grown about 10.6% without Emojipedia's drop, rather than the reported 7.6%. In the fourth quarter, total advertising revenue slipped 1.9% to $5.1 million. Because Emojipedia already took a $3.7 million write-down in the second quarter, the traffic loss appears permanent.
What to watch: fourth-quarter and first-quarter advertising revenue growth. A return to growth once Zedge laps the Google search changes would show marketplace ads can outgrow the Emojipedia drag.

New Chief Executive, Insider Cash and Paused Buybacks
Zedge appointed Morris Berger as chief executive in October, while Reich remains president and chief operating officer. In September, Howard Jonas "led a $7.7 million insider investment in Zedge in September to accelerate DataSeeds’ growth" and took a larger role in scaling the AI unit. Because of the cash raise, Zedge noted that "The share repurchase was suspended in Q1 FY27 in light of the September capital raise."
💲 Other KPIs
Deferred revenue—cash customers have paid upfront for annual and lifetime subscriptions not yet delivered—rose 13.4% from a year ago. However, growth slowed from 26% in the third quarter and 39% in the second quarter, and the balance dipped 1.3% from last quarter's $6.16 million.
Cash on the balance sheet rose 9.3% from a year ago and increased by $0.64 million from the third quarter, with zero debt. That balance does not yet include the $7.7 million September insider investment, which arrived in the first quarter of fiscal 2027.
Zedge reduced its diluted share count by 1.9% from a year ago after buying back 360,000 shares in the fourth quarter and 686,477 shares across fiscal 2026. The September stock sale and buyback pause will reverse this downward trend in fiscal 2027.
❓ Key Questions
How much revenue did DataSeeds generate in fiscal 2026?
Management highlighted a six-figure order and a $7.7 million capital raise for DataSeeds, but its segment brought in only $400,000 in the fourth quarter. Investors need standalone revenue and backlog figures to judge the unit's scale.
How many shares did Zedge issue in the September investment?
Howard Jonas led a $7.7 million insider investment after the fiscal year closed, and Zedge suspended its share buybacks. The release did not disclose the share price, dilution or warrant terms of the financing.
What happened to Tapedeck and the six alpha apps?
In prior quarters, management promised six alpha app launches in fiscal 2026 and promoted its Tapedeck indie music marketplace. Neither initiative appeared in the fourth-quarter release, leaving it unclear if Zedge shelved them.
When will monthly active users in richer markets stop falling?
Active users in well-developed markets dropped 22.2% from a year ago, the worst decline of the year. Management has not shown when higher revenue per user will hit a ceiling against a shrinking audience.
