Xperi (XPER) Q3 2026 earnings review
Xperi's ad sales triple, but its licensing revenue shrinks
Xperi, the maker of TiVo smart TV software and DTS audio technology, grew its advertising business rapidly while its larger software licensing business shrank. Advertising revenue nearly quadrupled from a year ago to $15 million, but an 8% drop in licensing held total sales growth to 2%. Chief executive Jon Kirchner raised the full-year profit margin and operating cash flow plans, though by our math the narrowed sales outlook points to a 3% revenue drop in the fourth quarter.
| Revenue | $114.0M +2.1% from a year ago |
|---|---|
| Advertising and related revenue | $14.9M +281% from a year ago |
| TiVo One ad revenue per user | $7.65 +14% from last quarter |
| Full-year profit margin outlook | Raised 2 pts to 19โ21% adjusted EBITDA margin |
โ๏ธ Verdict: ๐ข Bullish
The story got better because the advertising division finally covered its direct costs and turned a 31% gross margin by our math, after losing money last quarter. In addition, smart TV ad revenue per user rose 14% from last quarter to $7.65, ending a four-quarter slide. One caution: unbilled contract receivables rose another $15 million, leaving nine-month operating cash flow near zero and burning free cash flow.
The question now is whether Xperi can turn its recorded contract revenue into actual cash and hit its year-end ad targets. Either fourth-quarter holiday ad sales and contract collections deliver $24 million of operating cash flow by our math, or unbilled receivables keep absorbing cash. Fourth-quarter cash flow and the year-end ad revenue per user reading will settle it.
๐ Bull Case
Advertising Revenue Tripled and Turned Profitable
"As expected, our success in building our TiVo One footprint has begun to drive substantial growth in advertising and related revenue," chief executive Jon Kirchner said. TiVo One is Xperi's ad platform for smart TVs and broadband video boxes. Last quarter, direct costs for advertising exceeded revenue, leaving a negative 8% gross margin. This quarter, advertising revenue nearly quadrupled from a year ago to $14.9 million, while direct costs rose slower to $10.3 million.
By our math, that left a positive 31.0% gross margin before depreciation and amortization, up from negative 36.2% a year ago. This matters because Xperi promised that advertising margins would turn positive entering 2027, so crossing into profit early eases concern that ad growth would lose money. Still, advertising direct costs rose 4.3 percentage points of total revenue from a year ago, which pulled company-wide gross margin down 5.1 percentage points.
What to watch: advertising gross margin in the fourth quarter. Another positive reading while holiday ad spending rises will confirm the platform covers its direct costs.
Smart TV Ad Revenue Per User Rebounded
Xperi tracks average revenue per user (ARPU) on TiVo One over the past four quarters, and sets a goal of passing $10 by year-end. That figure had fallen for four straight quarters as new TV users joined faster than ad sales grew. In the third quarter, TiVo One ARPU rose 14% from last quarter to $7.65, while monthly active users grew by 500,000 to 6.8 million.
The software maker also signed MediaMarktSaturn, Europe's largest electronics retailer, as its eleventh smart TV partner to create "a new retail media and commerce opportunity across the TV experience". The ARPU rebound shows ad sales finally grew faster than the user base. However, reaching the $10 target in one more quarter still requires a big fourth-quarter jump.
What to watch: fourth-quarter TiVo One ARPU. A figure above $10 will show whether holiday ads and retail partnerships met Xperi's year-end goal.
Car Radio Data Signed Eight More Broadcasters
DTS AutoStage is Xperi's connected-car radio and video platform, which sells listener data and ad tools to radio broadcasters. Last quarter, Xperi signed Cumulus as its first paying broadcaster. This quarter, the San Jose group expanded its broadcaster portal from 300 to 550 US metro areas and signed "data monetization agreements with eight additional broadcasters", while total cars with AutoStage passed 18 million.
Adding eight broadcasters in one quarter proves that Cumulus was not a one-off deal. Because Xperi puts this car data revenue inside its Media Platform division, these contracts help explain why Media Platform revenue doubled from a year ago.
What to watch: whether management discloses the dollar revenue from broadcaster data contracts on the call, which would show how much car data contributed to ad growth.
Engineering Cuts Keep Lifting Profit Margin Outlook
Xperi cut about 250 jobs late last year to save $30 million to $35 million a year and offset higher costs in its growing ad business. In the third quarter, research and development spending fell to 20.6% of revenue from 26.8% a year ago, a drop of 6.2 percentage points, while selling and administrative costs fell 1.6 percentage points to 36.6%.
Those savings kept operating margin excluding one-offs steady at 15.6% despite the 5.1-point drop in gross margin, so Kirchner raised the full-year adjusted EBITDA margin outlook by 2 percentage points to 19%โ21%. By our math, the new middle of the range still leaves fourth-quarter margin at 16.3%, down from 20.2% this quarter.
What to watch: fourth-quarter research and administrative expenses. Steady spending would push full-year profit margins to the top of the raised plan.
๐ป Bear Case
Unbilled Contracts Keep Draining Cash Flow
Kirchner raised Xperi's full-year operating cash flow outlook by $5 million to a range of $20 million to $30 million, citing strong execution. However, Xperi signs multi-year licensing deals with minimum guarantees where it records revenue upfront but collects the cash in later years, creating unbilled contracts receivable on its balance sheet.
- Total unbilled contracts receivable: $182.5 million, up $14.8 million from last quarter and up $36.8 million since year-end
- Third-quarter operating cash flow: $4.1 million, down 46% from $7.5 million a year ago
- Nine-month operating cash flow: $0.6 million, leaving $24.4 million needed in the fourth quarter to hit the middle of the plan by our math
This cuts against the raised cash outlook because unbilled receivables absorbed $36.8 million of cash over nine months. Reaching the new $25 million midpoint requires collecting six times as much operating cash in the fourth quarter as Xperi generated in the fourth quarter of last year ($4.1 million).
What to watch: fourth-quarter unbilled contracts receivable and operating cash flow. Another rise in unbilled receivables would make the raised cash target hard to reach.
Licensing Drop Offsets the Advertising Boom
While advertising revenue gets the headlines, Xperi still gets 87% of its sales from licensing audio, video and pay-TV software. In the third quarter, licensing and other revenue fell 8.1% from a year ago to $99.0 million, after growing 3.4% in the second quarter. Direct licensing gross margin before depreciation also slipped 3.4 percentage points to 74.6%.
Because licensing is six times larger than advertising, its $8.7 million drop erased most of the $11.0 million gain in advertising, leaving total revenue up just 2.1% at $114.0 million. Furthermore, Xperi narrowed its full-year revenue outlook to $450 million to $462 million; by our math, the middle of that range points to fourth-quarter revenue of $113.4 million, down 2.7% from a year ago.
What to watch: the revenue breakdown by market in the quarterly filing, which will show whether Pay TV, Consumer Electronics or Connected Car drove the licensing drop.
Risks this quarter didn't answer
Several standing risks from last quarter depend on footnote tables that appear in the quarterly filing or conference call rather than the earnings release.
- Pay-TV and Consumer Electronics erosion: segment revenue tables are not in the release; IPTV households edged up just 20,000 from last quarter to 3.42 million.
- Minimum-guarantee and customer concentration: point-in-time licensing revenue and whether one customer still accounts for 20% of sales await the filing's footnote.
- Abandoned multi-year revenue targets: management did not mention its old $80 million Media Platform goal or its 2024 target of $200 million in extra 2026 revenue.
- Memory chip costs: full-year capital spending guidance stayed at $25 million, with no new detail on partner hardware costs.

Finance Chief Will Retire Next Year
Xperi announced that chief financial officer Robert Andersen will retire in 2027 as "part of a planned transition". Kirchner said Andersen will stay in his job until the company hires and boards a successor. Because Andersen has led the financial shift from software licensing toward advertising and minimum-guarantee contracts, his successor will inherit the unbilled receivable balance and the 2027 margin targets.
๐ฒ Other KPIs
Free cash flow โ operating cash flow minus software development and equipment spending โ turned negative at -$3.4 million, down from +$7.6 million last quarter and +$1.9 million a year ago. Operating cash flow fell while capitalized software spending rose to $6.6 million from $4.8 million a year ago.
Deferred revenue โ cash customers have paid upfront for services not yet delivered โ fell for a fourth straight quarter to $22.8 million by our math, down 33.7% from $34.3 million a year ago and down from $26.6 million last quarter. It shows Xperi is collecting less cash upfront even as unbilled contracts grow.
Profit per share excluding one-offs fell 14.3% from a year ago to $0.24, down from $0.28 last quarter. Operating profit excluding one-offs edged up 1.3%, but diluted shares rose 7.0% to 49.6 million and tax expense rose to $7.4 million on $2.1 million of pretax profit.
๐ฎ Guidance
Raised. The entertainment technology group narrowed its range and lifted the middle by $1 million to $456 million, or 1.8% growth for the year by our math. That leaves $113.4 million for the fourth quarter, down 2.7% from a year ago and down 0.5% from the third quarter.
Raised. Xperi lifted its full-year target by 2 percentage points after margins ran above 20% for three straight quarters. By our math, the 20% midpoint and the revenue midpoint leave fourth-quarter margin at 16.3%, down from 20.2% in the third quarter.
Raised. Management lifted the range by $5 million despite generating only $0.6 million of operating cash flow in the first nine months. By our math, hitting the $25 million midpoint requires $24.4 million of operating cash in the fourth quarter, compared with $4.1 million in the fourth quarter of last year.
Unchanged. The plan keeps software and equipment spending at about $25 million after raising it from $15โ20 million last quarter. With $19.2 million spent in the first nine months, by our math that leaves about $5.8 million for the fourth quarter, down from $7.4 million in the third quarter.
Unchanged. The company still expects about $20 million in tax expense excluding one-offs for the full year. In the third quarter, the tax provision excluding one-offs was $6.4 million by our math.
Unchanged. The full-year average share count outlook stays at 48 million to 49 million shares. Nine-month basic shares averaged 48.2 million, while third-quarter diluted shares excluding one-offs reached 49.6 million.
Unchanged. Employee stock pay remains planned at about $29 million for the year after a $2 million cut last quarter. Nine-month stock-based compensation totaled $21.7 million, leaving $7.3 million for the fourth quarter by our math.
โ Key Questions
What drove the 8% drop in licensing revenue?
Licensing and other revenue fell 8.1% from a year ago to $99.0 million after growing in the second quarter. Until the quarterly filing publishes the market tables, investors cannot see whether Pay TV, Connected Car or Consumer Electronics caused the drop.
How will Xperi collect $24 million of cash in Q4?
Nine-month operating cash flow is just $0.6 million because unbilled contracts receivable grew by $36.8 million. Management raised the full-year cash flow midpoint to $25 million, which requires collecting $24.4 million in a single quarter.
How much ad revenue came from car radio data?
Xperi signed eight more broadcasters to its AutoStage data portal and books those sales inside Media Platform and advertising revenue. Knowing the dollar contribution would show how much of the ad surge came from smart TVs versus car data.
How much revenue came from upfront minimum guarantees?
Last quarter, upfront minimum-guarantee contracts made up 28% of revenue and one customer accounted for 20% of sales. With unbilled receivables rising another $14.8 million this quarter, investors need the third-quarter upfront revenue figure.
