Viridian Therapeutics (VRDN) Q3 2026 earnings review

Viridian's eye drug starts strong, while research costs fall

Viridian Therapeutics, a developer of autoimmune medicines, turned from a research outfit into a commercial drugmaker this quarter. Its new thyroid eye disease drug Lumvoa brought in $24.7 million during its first three months on the market, which chief executive Steve Mahoney said beat the company's own expectations. Total revenue dropped 64% only because the year-ago quarter included a one-time $70 million license payment.

At a glance
Lumvoa net product sales$24.7M $0 a year ago (first quarter on market)
Revenue excluding license fees$25.6M $0.6M a year ago, by our math
Cash and marketable securities$955.2M down $26.3M from last quarter
Cash runway outlookUnchanged funded through profitability

⚖️ Verdict: 🟢 Bullish

The story got better because strong initial demand for Lumvoa removes the biggest question hanging over a first-time commercial launch. Furthermore, research costs fell 19% as late-stage eye trials wound down, keeping the $955 million cash pile intact. One caution: unpaid customer bills ended the quarter higher than total product sales, meaning the company has not yet collected the cash for these initial shipments.

The question now is how much of the third-quarter sales came from distributors stocking their shelves versus patients getting routine infusions. If clinics were mostly building inventory, fourth-quarter orders will slow down; if patient demand drove the shipments, revenue will keep climbing. Next quarter's product sales and cash collections will settle it.

🐂 Bull Case

🟢🟢 GROWTH

Lumvoa Brought In $24.7 Million Right Away

Viridian Therapeutics develops treatments for autoimmune conditions, starting with thyroid eye disease (TED), an disorder that causes inflammation and bulging behind the eyes. The biotech group won approval for its intravenous drug Lumvoa in late June and started selling it in July. “We are highly encouraged by the strength of Lumvoa’s early launch in TED, which has exceeded expectations,” chief executive Steve Mahoney said.

  • Lumvoa net product sales: $24.7 million in its first quarter on the market
  • Product gross margin: 93.8% by our math, with $1.5 million in cost of making the drug
  • Active patients: “more than 100 patients on therapy at the end of Q3 2026”

Those figures mean each patient generated up to $247,000 in third-quarter revenue by our math. Inaddition, federal health officials assigned Lumvoa a permanent billing code starting January 1, 2027, which makes insurance reimbursement simpler for clinics.

What to watch: fourth-quarter Lumvoa revenue and patient additions. A second quarter of rising patient numbers will show whether doctors are putting new patients on the drug beyond the initial waiting list.

Research Spending Drops as Late-Stage Trials End

Viridian is preparing a second thyroid eye disease medicine called elegrobart, an antibody that patients can inject under their own skin at home using an autoinjector pen. Management plans to submit its approval application to US regulators in the first quarter of 2027. Because the late-stage clinical trials for both Lumvoa and elegrobart have wound down, research spending is now falling.

Research and development costs dropped 18.7% from a year ago to $70.1 million. While that line rose by 150.0 percentage points of total revenue because last year included a one-time $70.0 million license fee, dollar spending fell for a second straight quarter. Furthermore, the US company expects its current sales force to “support a potential elegrobart launch with limited incremental investment”.

What to watch: the regulatory filing for elegrobart in the first quarter of 2027. Submitting the application on time keeps the at-home injection on track to join the existing sales infrastructure.

🐻 Bear Case

🔴🔴 CASH contradicts narrative

Customers Have Not Paid for First Shipments

The company highlighted “Significant market access progress made during the quarter” as clinics began ordering Lumvoa for thyroid eye disease patients. However, the balance sheet shows that Viridian had not yet collected the cash for those third-quarter drug sales by the time the period closed.

Accounts receivable — money owed by customers for product already delivered — stood at $29.8 million on September 30, up from zero at the end of last year. By our math, that unpaid balance equals 120.7% of the $24.7 million in net product sales recorded during the quarter. In new specialty drug launches, distributors and clinics often get extended payment terms to stock shelves, and gross invoices sit in receivables before rebates are deducted. Even so, the entire first quarter of sales remained unpaid on September 30.

What to watch: accounts receivable against product sales in the fourth-quarter report. Collection of this balance will confirm that initial distributor shipments are turning into cash rather than sitting in clinic inventory.

🔴 MARGIN

Launch Costs and Share Issuance Weigh on Results

Building a commercial organisation to sell Lumvoa has permanently raised the drugmaker's overhead. Selling, general and administrative expenses — which cover the field sales force, marketing and corporate staff — more than doubled from a year ago, rising 136.9% to $57.6 million. Because total revenue dropped against last year's one-time license payment, selling and overhead jumped by 189.2 percentage points of revenue.

To pay for its clinical trials and sales build-out, management raised $394.0 million through debt and stock sales earlier this year. As a result, the weighted-average common share count rose 38.7% from a year ago to 113.4 million shares, and total shares including convertible preferred stock reached 125.6 million. Future profits will be split across a much larger share base.

What to watch: selling and overhead expenses in the fourth quarter. Slowing quarter-on-quarter growth in this cost line will show whether the sales team build-out is complete.

Early-Stage Antibody Trials Approach Key Readouts

Beyond eye disease, Viridian is developing VRDN-006 and VRDN-008, which block the neonatal Fc receptor (FcRn) to clear harmful antibodies from the blood. In healthy volunteers, VRDN-006 lowered antibodies while it “spared albumin and LDL, and was generally well-tolerated”. Management will share VRDN-008 human data and portfolio plans in the fourth quarter, alongside starting a patient trial for Graves' disease drug VRDN-292.

💲 Other KPIs

Cash and marketable securities (26Q3) $955.2 million
⇘ decelerating

Down $26.3 million from $981.5 million at the end of the second quarter by our math, but still higher than the $874.7 million held at the end of 2025. Financing proceeds earlier in the year bolstered the balance, giving the drugmaker a large cushion as commercial sales begin.

Net loss (26Q3) $101.2 million
⇘ decelerating

The reported loss widened from $34.6 million a year ago, or from $0.34 to $0.81 per common share. However, the year-ago quarter included a $70.0 million upfront license fee. Excluding license revenue from both periods, the underlying loss narrowed by 3.1% from $104.6 million a year ago by our math, and narrowed from $127.1 million last quarter.

🔮 Guidance

Cash runway Through profitability
🠆 unchanged from Through profitability
⇒ stable

Unchanged. Management expects existing cash of $955.2 million, combined with future sales of Lumvoa and elegrobart, to “fund Viridian’s current business plans through profitability”. Because total operating expenses were $129.2 million this quarter, reaching breakeven without raising more money depends on steady product sales growth and keeping research costs down as late-stage trials finish.

❓ Key Questions

How much of Lumvoa's $24.7 million was distributor stocking?

With more than 100 patients on therapy, third-quarter sales work out to nearly $247,000 per patient by our math, and accounts receivable exceeded total product revenue. Investors need to know how many vials went into clinic inventory versus actual patient infusions.

Where did the $75 million other receivable go?

At the end of the second quarter, Viridian carried a $75.0 million balance in other receivables, while total other assets stood at $43.7 million at the end of the third quarter. Management did not say whether that $75.0 million was collected in cash during the quarter.

Which diseases will Viridian pick for VRDN-006 and VRDN-008?

The company plans to announce development plans for its FcRn antibody portfolio in the fourth quarter of 2026. Choosing crowded autoimmune conditions versus smaller rare diseases will determine how much the next wave of clinical trials costs.
