Unity (U) Q3 2026 earnings review

Unity's ad engine doubles and delivers its first net profit

Unity, the maker of software for building and advertising mobile games, posted its first net profit since going public as its ad business took off. Chief executive Matt Bromberg said the Vector ad engine grew 40% from last quarter, lifting ongoing revenue 59% from a year ago and pushing cash operating profit to 41% of sales. The fourth-quarter outlook calls for ongoing sales growth to speed up again to 66% at the middle of the range.

At a glance
Strategic revenue (ongoing businesses)$596.6M +59% from a year ago
Total revenue$622.1M +32% from a year ago
GAAP net income$121.6M 20% of revenue (vs -$126.8M a year ago)
Q4 strategic revenue outlook$683โ€“691M middle of the range: 66% growth

โš–๏ธ Verdict: ๐ŸŸข๐ŸŸข Very Bullish

The story got much better because Vector sped up instead of slowing toward market rates, and the fourth-quarter plan shows that momentum continuing. Reaching a 20% net profit margin also removes the concern that ongoing restructuring costs would keep Unity in the red. One caution: the software subscription division is not keeping pace with the advertising boom, with its fourth-quarter outlook slowing to 5% growth at the middle of the range.

The question now is whether artificial intelligence coding tools will shrink paid seats for Unity's game-creation software or simply feed more games into its ad network. Either subscription growth rebounds when Unity 7 launches, or Unity becomes almost entirely an advertising company. First-quarter Create revenue and deferred revenue additions will tell.

๐Ÿ‚ Bull Case

๐ŸŸข๐ŸŸข strengthening GROWTH

Vector Advertising Growth Accelerated Instead of Slowing

Unity Vector, the artificial intelligence system that places ads inside mobile games, is the company's main growth engine. Sceptics worried that Vector would slow down once it caught up with rival ad networks, and the prior third-quarter plan assumed sequential growth would ease to about 20%.

Instead, the ad engine sped up. Chief executive Matt Bromberg said Vector grew 40% from last quarter and 126% from a year ago, lifting ongoing advertising revenue (Strategic Grow) by 90% to $431.5 million.

  • Vector sequential growth: 40% in the third quarter, up from 23% in the second quarter and 15% in the first
  • Ongoing advertising revenue: $431.5 million, beating the $380 million to $385 million outlook
  • Fourth-quarter ongoing advertising outlook: $515 million to $520 million, up 106% from a year ago at the middle of the range

The acceleration matters because the fourth-quarter outlook calls for another 20% sequential jump in ongoing advertising revenue, by our math. That forward plan shows advertiser demand is still building rather than hitting a ceiling.

What to watch: Vector's sequential growth rate in the fourth quarter. Another reading above 20% would confirm that live game data is still winning ad budgets from rivals.

๐ŸŸข๐ŸŸข strengthening MARGIN

Sales Cuts Drove Unity's First Net Profit

Unity had promised to reach net profit under standard accounting rules in the third quarter, after years of wide gaps between its cash profit and net losses. A standing concern was that ongoing restructuring charges and employee stock grants would leave too little cushion to stay in the black.

The software maker cleared that bar with room to spare, posting $121.6 million in net income, or 20% of sales, compared with a $126.8 million loss a year ago. Even stripping out a $4.5 million gain from selling the Supersonic publishing unit and a $2.7 million tax benefit, net profit was $114.4 million by our math.

Lower overhead and ad revenue growth drove the swing through "continued cost control", the company said. Sales and marketing spending fell by 18.6 percentage points of revenue from a year ago to 16.6% (or down 9.8 percentage points to 11.6% excluding one-offs), while research and development dropped 11.6 percentage points to 40.4%. Cash operating profit (Adjusted EBITDA) reached a 41.2% margin, up 18.0 percentage points.

What to watch: fourth-quarter net income alongside restructuring charges, which rose to $12.5 million this quarter. Holding a double-digit net margin will show the profit swing is durable.

๐Ÿป Bear Case

๐Ÿ”ด๐Ÿ”ด persistent PRODUCT contradicts narrative

Game Creation Software Lags the Advertising Boom

"We are seeing the compounding impact of our flywheel strategy: more creators make more games on our platform, and more games fuel the need for more discovery through advertising," Bromberg said. Create Solutions is Unity's subscription software that developers use to build games, and management argues that opening the software to "artificial intelligence tools and integrations with third-party coding agents" will expand both halves of the business.

The numbers show a one-sided boom rather than a balanced loop. Ongoing game-creation revenue (Strategic Create) grew 11.4% from a year ago to $165.1 million in the third quarter, while total Create revenue rose 8.4% as the company wound down cloud and hosting services following its "portfolio reset in 2025".

More importantly, Unity's fourth-quarter outlook calls for ongoing Create revenue growth to slow to 4% to 6% from a year ago, even as ongoing advertising revenue more than doubles. If automated coding tools let developers build games with fewer paid software seats, Unity relies even more heavily on its ad network to carry the company.

What to watch: Strategic Create revenue growth in the first quarter of 2027, when Unity 7 is scheduled for full release. A reading stuck in the mid-single digits would indicate that new AI tools are not lifting software subscription sales.

๐Ÿ”ด persistent CASH

Unpaid Customer Bills Rose Faster Than Cash

Unity generated $219.7 million in free cash flow in the third quarter, up 45.2% from a year ago. However, cash collection lagged behind the 134.3% jump in cash operating profit because rapid advertising growth tied up money in unpaid customer bills.

  • Accounts receivable (unpaid customer bills): $833.5 million, up 21.0% from last quarter against 13.8% total revenue growth by our math
  • Cash flow drain from unpaid bills: $140.2 million in the third quarter, partially offset by a $72.0 million rise in payables owed to game publishers
  • Share count excluding one-offs: 498.2 million diluted shares, up 2.6% from a year ago and including 41.3 million shares from convertible debt

Meanwhile, Unity still does not buy back stock to offset employee equity grants and convertible debt dilution, leaving basic share count up 4.1% from a year ago.

What to watch: accounts receivable growth relative to sequential revenue growth in the fourth quarter. Continued build-ups above revenue growth would show that advertisers are taking longer to pay.

๐Ÿ”ด persistent DISCLOSURE

Risks this quarter didn't answer

Several standing risks and product details could not be read from the third-quarter earnings release alone.

  • Standalone Vector dollar revenue and non-Vector ad performance: management gave Vector's growth rates (126% from a year ago, 40% from last quarter) without dollar figures for Vector or the rest of the ad division.
  • Game runtime data adoption: the release mentions runtime data and "Unity Spark and Unityโ€™s partnership with Google" only in the forward-looking risk disclosures, with no opt-in figures or launch dates.
  • China revenue and buyout terms: the release does not break out regional sales, which arrive in the quarterly filing, though redeemable noncontrolling interests rose to $273.3 million.
  • Mobile privacy rules: no update on operating-system or app-store policy changes beyond standard risk disclosures.
