Transportadora de Gas del Sur (TGS) Q3 2026 earnings review

TGS locks in major project deals, but inflation cuts profit

Transportadora de Gas del Sur, which moves 60% of Argentina's natural gas, saw earnings drop as inflation outran the US dollar and pipeline rules changed. Revenue in inflation-adjusted pesos fell 6%, while net income dropped 26% on lower regulated transport profit and smaller returns on cash holdings. Capital spending quadrupled to 526 billion pesos as finance chief Alejandro Basso ramped up construction on two major expansion projects.

NGL project contracted capacity96% 15-year take-or-pay contracts; RIGI tax regime approved

⚖️ Verdict: 🟢 Bullish

The long-term story got better because the government approved the company's $3.2 billion natural gas liquids project for a 30-year tax and foreign-exchange stability regime, and producers have now locked in 96% of its capacity. That clears the way to close a $1.4 billion bank loan in December and sign $250 million in new shale gathering deals. Two cautions offset that progress: a May pipeline contract reset cut regulated revenue that will take until 2030 to recover, and the new $1.4 billion loan will carry parent-company guarantees.

The question now is whether current operations can fund the construction wave without straining the balance sheet while Argentine inflation runs 21 percentage points ahead of currency depreciation. If the Perito Moreno expansion opens on time in May 2027 and the exchange rate catches up, new dollar cash flows will keep debt below 2.5 times Ebitda; if inflation keeps squeezing real peso earnings, borrowing will climb. Closing the $1.4 billion loan in December and starting the pipeline in May will tell.

🟢🟢 GROWTH

Major Liquids Project Secures Tax Protections and Contracts

Transportadora de Gas del Sur (tgs), Argentina's largest natural gas pipeline operator, is building a $3.2 billion project to extract and export natural gas liquids (NGLs) like propane and butane. In October, the economy ministry approved the venture for the Large Investment Incentive Regime (RIGI). Finance chief Alejandro Basso noted that "RIGI provides tax and foreign exchange benefits as well as regulatory stability for 30 years".

  • Contracted capacity: 96% locked into 15-year take-or-pay deals, where gas producers pay even if they do not ship
  • Total project investment: $3 billion in cash plus $200 million in existing processing plants
  • Syndicated bank loan in talks: $1.4 billion, expected to close in December 2026

Securing government protection and customer contracts removes the biggest hurdles to construction. Because RIGI approval was a requirement for lenders, the subsidiary Midstream de Gas del Sur can now finalize its bank package and start commercial operations by March 2030.

What to watch: official publication of the RIGI resolution in the government gazette and final closing of the $1.4 billion loan by December 2026. Completing both steps on schedule will allow the company to repay its short-term import loans and fund the $1.1 billion spending phase across 2027 and 2028.

🟢 PRODUCT

Rich Shale Gas Drives $250 Million in New Deals

Rising production in Vaca Muerta, Argentina's main shale basin, continues to expand the Midstream segment, which gathers and treats raw gas at the wellhead. Billed transport volumes in the basin rose 9.4% from a year ago to 35 million cubic meters per day, while conditioned gas volumes rose 6.9% to 31 million cubic meters per day. That volume growth added 13.8 billion pesos in real revenue.

Because the incoming shale gas contains more liquids than expected, tgs signed two new expansion deals. It agreed with producer Pampa Energía to build a $190 million gathering pipeline under a 15-year contract, freeing space in existing pipes for the NGL project. It is also spending $60 million on a new stabilization plant in Tratayén "to be able to manage these liquids and other debottlenecking facilities", Basso said.

What to watch: Secretary of Energy approval for an extra 4.5 million cubic meters per day expansion on the Perito Moreno pipeline, requiring $100 million in spending. Approval will extend the company's unregulated dollar-linked transport capacity beyond the 14 million cubic meters per day scheduled to open in April 2027.

🟢 MARGIN

Higher Export Prices and Cheaper Gas Lift Liquids Profit

The Liquids segment, which processes gas into ethane, propane, butane and natural gasoline, was the only division to grow operating profit this quarter. Segment operating profit rose 21.4% from a year ago to 78.9 billion pesos, even as dispatched volumes slipped 3.2% to 292,553 metric tons due to a 14.2% drop in export shipments.

Two price shifts expanded the segment's profit margin. Conflict in the Middle East lifted international reference prices, adding 43.0 billion pesos to revenue. At the same time, the average price tgs paid for natural gas feedstock fell 8.8% from $3.40 to $3.10 per million BTU, cutting cost of sales by 18.9 billion pesos, or 5.5 percentage points of segment revenue by our math.

What to watch: fourth-quarter international propane and natural gasoline prices alongside domestic gas feedstock costs. Because Liquids generates 42% of company revenue, maintaining this spread is essential to offset inflation pressure elsewhere in the business.

🐻 Bear Case

🔴🔴 MACRO

Slow Currency Depreciation Squeezes Dollar-Linked Business

In Argentina's hyperinflationary economy, tgs reports its accounts in constant pesos adjusted for inflation. While its non-regulated Midstream and Liquids businesses bill customers in US dollars, their operating costs and tax reporting are tied to local peso inflation. Over the past year, consumer prices rose 33.4% while the US dollar exchange rate rose only 12.5%.

  • Total revenue in constant pesos: 532.5 billion pesos, down 6.5% from a year ago
  • Liquids inflation restatement loss on Ebitda: 21.0 billion pesos
  • Midstream inflation restatement loss on Ebitda: 20.8 billion pesos
  • Company administrative and selling expenses: up 1.8 percentage points of revenue to 11.5%

Because the peso gained value in real terms, dollar revenues translated into fewer constant pesos than a year ago. In Midstream, that 20.8 billion peso currency drag wiped out the 13.8 billion peso gain from higher Vaca Muerta volumes, pushing segment operating profit down 24.4% to 46.2 billion pesos.

What to watch: the gap between quarterly Argentine inflation and peso depreciation in the fourth quarter. If inflation continues to outrun the exchange rate by more than 20 percentage points a year, real peso earnings in the dollar-linked segments will keep shrinking regardless of volume growth.

🔴🔴 MARGIN contradicts narrative

Pipeline Contract Reset Cuts Regulated Profit for Years

In the first quarter of 2026, tgs stated that regulators had reconfigured the national gas pipeline network to match Vaca Muerta flows with almost neutral impact on monthly revenues. On this quarter's call, Basso noted that the May 2026 reconfiguration had an "initially negative effect" that "will be partially offset by future small monthly tariff adjustments".

The numbers show a deep immediate hit. Natural Gas Transportation operating profit fell 23.5% from a year ago to 79.2 billion pesos. Reconfigured firm contracts and lower interruptible services cut revenue by 20.9 billion pesos, while pipeline repair and maintenance costs rose by 6.0 billion pesos, pushing segment cost of sales up 9.6 percentage points of revenue by our math.

Quarterly inflation-linked tariff increases of about 6% added 58.4 billion pesos, barely beating the 51.6 billion peso inflation drag. When asked when the reconfiguration loss would be made whole, Basso said: "So we expect to recover the lost revenues in this 5-year period or 4-year period up to 2030".

What to watch: monthly regulated tariff adjustments against local inflation over the next two quarters. Because recovering the 20.9 billion peso quarterly revenue gap will take up to four years, the regulated division will drag on consolidated earnings through 2027.

🔴 CASH

Heavy Construction Spending Flips Cash Flow Negative

Building the Perito Moreno pipeline expansion and starting the NGL project caused capital spending to quadruple. Cash payments for property, plant and equipment jumped 352.9% from a year ago to 526.5 billion pesos, consuming 98.9% of the quarter's total revenue by our math.

Even though customers prepaid 157 billion pesos for future pipeline capacity, free cash flow flipped from a positive 84.8 billion pesos a year ago to a deficit of 229.9 billion pesos. Furthermore, Basso confirmed that the upcoming $1.4 billion project loan will not be isolated from the parent company: "The financing is going to have recourse to TGS. We are going to have contingent warranties there".

What to watch: consolidated net debt to Ebitda as spending overlaps in 2027, which Basso estimates will peak below 2.5 times. Putting parent-company guarantees on the $1.4 billion loan means any construction delay beyond the May 2027 pipeline launch or March 2030 NGL launch directly burdens tgs.

Cerri Flood Insurance Recovery Pushed to Early 2027

A severe flood at the Cerri processing complex in March 2025 caused about $50 million in damages and expenses. Having eliminated those repair charges this quarter lifted other operating results by 8.2 billion pesos compared with a year ago. However, Basso noted that collecting the remaining insurance payout — previously anticipated around mid-2026 after a $10 million advance — is now expected in the first quarter of 2027.

New. Out of the $3.0 billion cash investment for the NGL venture, the company plans to spend $1.1 billion across 2027 and 2028. By our math, that leaves $1.5 billion to be spent across 2029 and early 2030 ahead of the March 2030 launch.

❓ Key Questions

What are the interest rate and terms on the $1.4 billion loan?

Management expects to close the $1.4 billion syndicated bank package in December with recourse to the parent company. Knowing the interest margin and repayment schedule is vital because interest expenses already rose 43% from a year ago.

Why did the neutral pipeline reconfiguration cut revenue by 21 billion pesos?

In the first quarter, the company described the May 2026 system reconfiguration as almost neutral to monthly revenue, yet it reduced third-quarter sales by 20.9 billion pesos and will take until 2030 to recover.

How much revenue will the $250 million in new Vaca Muerta projects generate?

Basso announced a $190 million gathering pipeline for Pampa Energía and $60 million for a new stabilization plant. Management did not disclose the expected annual Ebitda or tariff rates for either investment.

Will TGS bring in equity partners for the NGL project?

In late 2025, management planned to bring partners into the liquids venture to share capital costs. With the $3.2 billion RIGI approval secured and parent guarantees on the debt, it is unclear if tgs still seeks co-investors.
