Trekor Metals (TKO) Q3 2026 earnings review

Trekor Metals profit jumps, but well delays cut Arizona output

Trekor Metals, the North American copper miner, nearly doubled third-quarter revenue on high copper prices while well delays slowed its new Arizona mine. Sales reached C$342 million as its realized copper price rose 43% from a year ago and older price-cap hedges expired. Output at the Gibraltar mine in British Columbia beat plan, but by our math the updated full-year outlooks point to Gibraltar's production dropping by about a quarter in the fourth quarter.

⚖️ Verdict: 🔴 Bearish

The story got worse because Trekor cut the 2026 production target for its Florence mine in Arizona by 6 million pounds and pushed full capacity into early 2027. Wellfield drilling there is three months behind schedule, and the mine still spent more cash on operations and well drilling combined than it brought in. On the bright side, richer ore at Gibraltar funded a 5 million pound full-year increase there and helped trim net debt.

The question now is whether Florence can reach its 85 million pound annual capacity in early 2027 and generate cash after well drilling and higher acid bills. One view is that steady monthly well additions will quickly lift output and lower unit costs, while the other is that continuous wellfield spending and 2027 sulfuric acid inflation will keep cash returns thin. Fourth-quarter Florence production and the 2027 acid contract terms will tell.

🐂 Bull Case

🟢🟢 strengthening GROWTH

High Copper Prices Carry the Quarter

Trekor Metals makes almost all of its money selling copper, so record metal prices drove a big jump in third-quarter revenue and profit. At the same time, this price reliance is a major risk because the company still carries C$755.3 million in total debt.

In the first half of 2026, copper price ceilings on its hedging contracts cost the miner C$41.6 million. Those contracts expired in June, and Trekor bought floor options for late 2026 and early 2027 while "retaining full exposure to increases in the copper price".

  • Average realized copper price: US$6.40 per pound, up 43% from US$4.49 a year ago
  • Realized loss on settled copper options: C$0.1 million, down from C$24.2 million in Q2
  • Cost of sales: production costs fell 11.3 percentage points of revenue, and depletion fell 2.9 percentage points
  • Profit per share, excluding one-offs: C$0.15, up from C$0.02 a year ago

Higher copper prices and expiring hedge losses lifted gross margin by 14.2 percentage points from a year ago. Because Trekor only locks in a US$4.75 to US$5.00 floor price, a drop in global copper prices back toward historic averages would quickly squeeze cash flow.

What to watch: fourth-quarter realized copper prices against the US$6.40 current benchmark. A drop toward the US$4.75 option floor would slow the company's debt repayment plans.

Gibraltar Raises Full-Year Target Before Q4 Dip

Gibraltar, the open-pit copper and molybdenum mine in British Columbia, is Trekor's main cash generator. Deeper mining in the Connector pit delivered richer copper ore this quarter, and mill volume rose to 7.5 million tons, closer to its daily design capacity.

The British Columbia mine produced 33.9 million pounds of copper, up 22.8% from a year ago, and management raised its 2026 output plan by 5 million pounds. For 2027, the company also signed smelter contracts with "terms which include payable gold and deeply negative TCRCs" — treatment and refining charges, the fees smelters charge miners to process ore.

Despite the strong quarter, "Lower grades and recoveries are expected as mining transitions back to the upper benches of the Connector Pit". By our math, the new full-year outlook leaves just 20.9 to 25.9 million pounds for the fourth quarter, down 23.8% from a year ago at the middle of the range, while capital spending at the mine totaled C$69.8 million over the first nine months.

What to watch: fourth-quarter Gibraltar copper production and ore recovery rates. Output below 21 million pounds would show the upper-bench ore transition is harsher than planned.

🐻 Bear Case

🔴🔴 persistent GROWTH contradicts narrative

Florence Wellfield Delays Force a Production Cut

Florence Copper, the new Arizona mine that dissolves copper underground and pumps it to the surface, is the centerpiece of Trekor's growth story. Management previously targeted 30 to 35 million pounds of copper there in 2026 and aimed to reach full plant capacity by December.

This quarter, the company admitted that "overall wellfield development is still about three months behind the original plan set out at the start of the year". It cut the 2026 production plan to 25 to 28 million pounds and pushed the timeline back, now "completing the ramp-up to full production capacity in early 2027".

  • Q3 Florence copper production: 7.0 million pounds, up from 5.2 million in Q2
  • Operating production wells: 141 at quarter-end, up from 110 in Q2
  • Implied Q4 Florence production: 11.3 to 14.3 million pounds by our math, requiring an 83% jump from Q3 at the middle of the range

This is the third time expectations for Florence's first year have come down from the initial 40 to 50 million pound profile. Even the lowered target requires fourth-quarter output to nearly double from the third quarter, so any further drilling slowdown will cause another miss.

What to watch: fourth-quarter Florence cathode production and active well count. Output below 11.3 million pounds would miss the reduced full-year outlook.

🔴🔴 persistent CASH

Wellfield Spending Keeps Florence Cash-Negative

Trekor highlights that Florence's unit operating cost (C1, the direct cash cost to produce a pound of copper) fell to US$3.54 per pound from US$4.72 in the second quarter. However, that figure excludes the ongoing cost of drilling new underground wells.

In the third quarter, Florence generated C$60.0 million (about US$42.9 million by our math) in revenue on 6.9 million pounds sold. Against that, the mine spent US$24.5 million on site operating costs and another US$25.5 million on wellfield development capital expenditures.

When wellfield drilling is counted, Florence spent US$50.0 million at the site and burned about US$7.0 million in cash by our math, even with copper at record highs. Until production volume grows enough to cover both operating expenses and continuous well drilling, the Arizona mine is still consuming cash rather than funding debt reduction.

What to watch: fourth-quarter Florence revenue minus total site costs in the operations table. A negative gap in the fourth quarter would mean the mine still cannot self-fund its wellfield drilling.

🔴 strengthening MACRO

War Drives Up Fuel and Acid Costs

Mining at Gibraltar consumes large amounts of diesel and explosives, while underground copper recovery at Florence relies heavily on sulfuric acid. Management previously estimated that higher fuel prices would add US$0.15 per pound to Gibraltar's operating costs.

The conflict in the Middle East pushed Gibraltar's third-quarter diesel bill up C$9.6 million from a year ago to C$22.0 million, adding about US$0.20 per pound to operating costs, while explosives rose C$3.9 million. At Florence, "Higher acid prices are expected next year due to reported disruptions in global acid supply chains and geopolitical events in the Middle East".

Meanwhile, early development spending on projects like Yellowhead jumped to C$12.6 million from C$4.1 million a year ago, and US copper tariff uncertainty continues to move market inventories. Rising fuel, acid and project costs will eat into the profit gains from Florence's volume growth in 2027.

What to watch: terms of the 2027 sulfuric acid supply contract for Florence once negotiations finish. A large price increase over the 2026 fixed rate would lift Florence's cash costs next year.

Trekor Extends Credit Line and Cuts Debt

"Following a successful Florence Copper ramp-up, the Company will be focused on capital allocation and any excess liquidity in the future will be earmarked for additional debt repayment," Trekor wrote. In the third quarter, the miner paid down C$10.4 million of equipment loans and lifted cash by C$28.4 million to C$214.2 million, cutting net debt by 6.6% from last quarter to C$541.1 million. In October, it also extended its revolving credit line to October 2029 and raised the limit to US$130 million.

🔮 Guidance

FY26 Gibraltar Copper Production 115–120 million pounds
🠅 raised from 110–115 million pounds
⇘ decelerating

Raised. Management lifted its full-year target for the British Columbia mine by 5 million pounds, pointing to 19.9% growth over 2025 at the middle of the range. By our math, that leaves 20.9 to 25.9 million pounds for the fourth quarter, down from 33.9 million in the third quarter and 30.7 million a year ago as mining moves to lower-grade upper benches.

FY26 Florence Copper Production 25–28 million pounds
🠇 cut from 30–35 million pounds
⇗ accelerating

Cut. The miner lowered its 2026 output plan for the Arizona facility by 6 million pounds at the middle of the range because wellfield drilling is three months behind schedule. By our math, the new range still requires 11.3 to 14.3 million pounds in the fourth quarter, up 82.9% from the third quarter's 7.0 million pounds. It is the third reduction from initial expectations: -5.0M, -7.5M, 0.0M, -6.0M.

FY26 Gibraltar Operating Cost Diesel Impact +US$0.20 per pound
🠇 cut from +US$0.15 per pound
⇗ accelerating

Worsened. The company now says higher fuel prices from the Middle East conflict have raised Gibraltar's operating costs by about US$0.20 per pound over 2025 levels, up from the US$0.15 per pound drag estimated in the first half. Site diesel prices are currently about C$0.85 per litre above pre-war February levels, compared with a C$0.50 per litre gap in the first quarter.

FY26 Gibraltar Treatment and Refining Charges Nominal
🠆 unchanged from Nominal
⇒ stable

Unchanged. Trekor still expects smelter processing fees at Gibraltar to be near zero for the full year 2026, matching its earlier outlook. Third-quarter off-property costs rose temporarily to US$0.24 per pound on the final shipments of an older contract, but low and negative fees on new contracts cover the rest of 2026.

❓ Key Questions

What will the 2027 sulfuric acid contract cost Florence?

Management warned that global supply disruptions and Middle East tensions will push Florence's sulfuric acid prices higher in 2027 after its fixed-price contract expires. Since acid is the facility's biggest operating expense, the new contract rate will determine 2027 unit costs.

When will Florence cover its own wellfield drilling costs?

In the third quarter, Florence spent US$25.5 million on wellfield capital development and US$24.5 million on site operating costs against C$60.0 million (US$42.9 million) in revenue. Investors need to know what monthly production level is required for the mine to generate net cash.

How much capital will Yellowhead and Aley need in 2027?

Other project development spending more than tripled from a year ago to C$12.6 million in the third quarter as Yellowhead entered environmental assessment planning and Aley hired a new team. Management has not said how much cash these projects will consume before debt is paid down.

Can Florence reach 12.8 million pounds in the fourth quarter?

By our math, hitting the middle of the reduced 25 to 28 million pound outlook requires fourth-quarter output to jump 82.9% from the third quarter's 7.0 million pounds. Management did not disclose October's monthly production rate to show how close the plant is.
