Tenable (TENB) Q3 2026 earnings review

Tenable profit jumps on platform upgrades, but new customer wins slip

Tenable, a cybersecurity software maker, broke a five-quarter growth slowdown as existing customers spent more on its all-in-one platform. Revenue rose 9.5% from a year ago, and profit per share excluding one-offs jumped 50% on slower hiring and heavy share buybacks. Co-chief executives Steve Vintz and Mark Thurmond raised the full-year plan, though by our math the fourth-quarter outlook still has revenue growth cooling to 7%.

Net expansion rate107% 106% last quarter
Full-year revenue outlookRaised $7.5M middle of the range: 8.6% growth

⚖️ Verdict: 🟢 Bullish

The story got better because customer expansion rose for a second straight quarter to 107% while an $800 million convertible debt deal paid off the 2028 term loan. Those two moves turn last quarter's expansion bounce into a pattern and remove a balance-sheet concern. The bad news: new enterprise customer additions fell 5% from a year ago, and short-term contracted backlog growth slowed to 12%.

The question now is whether platform upgrades can lift total growth back above 10% or only make up for slower new-customer wins. Optimists see two quarters of rising customer expansion as the start of a rebound, while sceptics see a repricing of the existing customer base that cannot outrun a 12% backlog pace. The initial 2027 revenue outlook next quarter will settle it.

🐂 Bull Case

🟢 strengthening GROWTH

Existing Customers Spend More for a Second Quarter

Tenable sells software that finds security gaps across a company's computer networks. For four years, the extra amount its existing customers spent each year — the dollar-based net expansion rate — shrank or stood still. Last quarter that measure ticked up by one percentage point to 106%, and management built its full-year plan around the rate staying flat at 106%.

"Customers are moving from conversation to commitment, and this quarter that increasingly meant expanding their relationship with Tenable One," co-chief executive Mark Thurmond said. Tenable One is the company's all-in-one security platform. The net expansion rate rose another point to 107% in the third quarter, and total revenue growth picked up to 9.5% from 8.6% in the second quarter, breaking a five-quarter slowdown.

A second straight increase turns a one-quarter bounce into a real trend, because customers are upgrading to the higher-priced platform faster than Tenable's own forecast assumed. What to watch: the net expansion rate in the fourth-quarter filing. Another reading at or above 107% would show that platform upgrades can lift overall growth in 2027.

🟢🟢 strengthening MARGIN

Slower Hiring Lifts Operating Margin and Profit

The cybersecurity group turns single-digit sales growth into much faster profit growth by holding down overhead and buying back shares. Operating margin, excluding one-offs, reached 27.1%, up 3.8 percentage points from a year ago and well above the 24.9% implied by the middle of its third-quarter outlook. Every operating cost line shrank as a share of revenue.

  • Sales and marketing, excluding one-offs: 30.7% of revenue, down 2.1 percentage points from a year ago
  • Research and development, excluding one-offs: 15.7% of revenue, down 1.0 percentage point
  • General and administrative, excluding one-offs: 8.0% of revenue, down 0.7 percentage points
  • Diluted share count: 116.0 million, down 4.9% after $223.8 million in third-quarter buybacks

Because Tenable kept spending tight while sales beat its plan, profit per share excluding one-offs jumped 50% from a year ago to $0.63. Management also raised its full-year operating profit outlook by $10.5 million at the middle of the range. What to watch: sales and marketing costs in the fourth quarter. The outlook points to operating margin dipping to 24.6% as second-half sales hiring takes effect.

concern eased CAPITAL ALLOCATION

Convertible Debt Refinances the 2028 Term Loan

Going into the quarter, Tenable carried a $353 million term loan due in July 2028 and had let its $50 million credit line expire while spending cash on share buybacks. In the third quarter, the Maryland company closed an $800 million convertible note offering and opened a new $400 million revolving credit facility.

Management used the proceeds to pay off the $360 million term loan in full, buy capped calls for $64.1 million to limit future share dilution, and repurchase 5.3 million shares for $170.5 million. Total cash and short-term investments rose to $495.3 million from $298.2 million in June, removing the 2028 refinancing risk and lowering fourth-quarter interest expense to $1.9 million. What to watch: share count in the fourth quarter, which the company forecasts will drop to 114.0 million.

🐻 Bear Case

🔴🔴 persistent GROWTH contradicts narrative

Fourth-Quarter Plan Still Points to Slower Growth

"We delivered an excellent third quarter, exceeding every one of our guided metrics," co-chief executive Steve Vintz said. Both chief executives described urgent customer demand for AI security tools, and the third-quarter revenue growth rate of 9.5% improved from 8.6% in the second quarter.

The company's own fourth-quarter forecast tells a quieter story. Management expects fourth-quarter revenue of $277.0 million to $280.0 million, which means growth of 6.9% at the middle of the range, by our math. Meanwhile, short-term remaining performance obligations (RPO) — contracted revenue to be recognised over the next 12 months — grew 11.7% from a year ago to $747.2 million, down from 12.3% growth in the second quarter. Net new short-term RPO added in the quarter was $26.1 million, slightly below the $27.1 million added a year earlier.

Tenable has beaten the middle of its quarterly revenue plan by an average of 2.1% over the last four quarters, so the fourth quarter may top 6.9%. Even so, the contracted backlog is not accelerating, which keeps overall growth in the single digits. What to watch: fourth-quarter short-term RPO growth and the initial 2027 revenue outlook next quarter. A 2027 plan below 9% would show that platform upgrades are only offsetting slower core sales.

🔴 persistent GROWTH

New Customer Additions Keep Slipping

Tenable relies on two engines for growth: selling more software to its 40,000 existing customers and winning new enterprise accounts. While existing customers spent more this quarter, new customer additions fell behind last year's pace.

The software maker added 413 new enterprise platform customers in the third quarter, down 5.5% from 437 in the third quarter of 2025, by our math. It also added 39 net new customers spending at least $100,000 a year, roughly even with 38 a year ago. If Tenable's growth comes mostly from raising prices and bundling tools for current users, that growth will eventually slow once the customer base finishes upgrading. What to watch: the split between revenue from existing customers and new customers in the third-quarter 10-Q filing. A second quarter of shrinking new-customer revenue would confirm that new account wins are lagging.

🔴 persistent DISCLOSURE

Risks this quarter didn't answer

Four standing concerns and watch items cannot be checked from the earnings release alone and depend on the conference call or the quarterly 10-Q filing.

  • Tenable One share of business: management aims for 40% of total business by year-end, up from roughly one-third, but the release gives no platform share or dollar figure.
  • Competitive moat and AI pricing: the release names new AI features but gives no unit economics or token revenue to test whether AI models commoditise vulnerability scanning.
  • AI budget pull-forward: whether AI security purchases are bringing new budget dollars or just shifting money from other tools remains unanswered.
  • Channel concentration: one distributor accounted for 30% of revenue last quarter; the 10-Q filing will show whether that concentration persisted.

New AI Agents and Anthropic Tools Join the Platform

Tenable expanded its AI software lineup this quarter. It built Anthropic's Claude Mythos model into Tenable One Adversary View, "helping security teams discover hidden attack paths and how to best remediate them". The company also launched CyberAgents Exchange, an open-source registry for security AI agents, and updated its Tenable Hexa AI engine by "introducing a coordinated fleet of AI agents that continuously identify critical exposures, orchestrate remediation and verify fixes, even when security teams are offline".

Unlevered free cash flow (26Q3) $69.4 million
⇗ accelerating

Cash flow before interest payments rose 18.7% from a year ago, picking up from 2.4% growth in the second quarter. Standard free cash flow — operating cash flow minus equipment and software development spending — grew 24.4% to $64.2 million, or 23.2% of revenue, helped by higher operating profit and strong customer collections.

Total deferred revenue (26Q3) $863.4 million
⇒ stable

Deferred revenue — cash billed to customers for service not yet delivered — rose 6.5% from a year ago by our math, matching the 6.5% pace in the second quarter. It continues to grow at less than half the 14.4% pace of total contracted backlog because more multi-year customers pay in annual instalments rather than upfront.

Stock-based compensation (26Q3) $51.2 million
⇗ accelerating

Employee stock awards rose 14.1% from a year ago and reached 18.5% of revenue, up from 17.3% in the second quarter and 17.8% a year earlier. The rise came mainly from research and development stock grants, which grew $4.7 million, and represents the main gap between GAAP operating margin of 6.0% and the 27.1% margin excluding one-offs.

🔮 Guidance

Q4 Revenue $277.0–280.0 million
🠅 raised from $271.4–280.4 million (implied)
⇘ decelerating

Raised at the middle of the range. The fourth-quarter outlook calls for 6.9% growth from a year ago at the midpoint, up from the $275.9 million that the prior full-year plan left for the quarter. Even so, it points to a slowdown from 9.5% growth in Q3. Tenable has beaten its quarterly midpoint by 2.1% on average over the last four quarters; if the pattern holds, Q4 revenue would grow 9.2% by our math.

FY26 Revenue $1.084–1.087 billion
🠅 raised from $1.075–1.081 billion
⇘ decelerating

Raised. Management lifted the middle of the full-year range by $7.5 million, to 8.6% growth from a year ago. It is the third straight raise this year, and each increase has been larger than the one before: +$3.0M in Q1, +$5.0M in Q2, and +$7.5M in Q3.

Q4 Operating income, excluding one-offs $67.1–70.1 million
🠅 raised from $61.0–70.0 million (implied)
⇘ decelerating

Raised. The plan puts fourth-quarter operating profit at $68.6 million at the middle of the range, or 24.6% of revenue, above the $65.5 million implied by the prior full-year forecast. That margin steps down from 27.1% in the third quarter as the cybersecurity group funds second-half hiring.

FY26 Operating income, excluding one-offs $270.0–273.0 million
🠅 raised from $258.0–264.0 million
⇗ accelerating

Raised. The middle of the full-year operating profit range rose by $10.5 million to $271.5 million, which equals a 25.0% operating margin, up from 21.9% in 2025. It is the third raise this year: +$7.0M, +$4.0M, and now +$10.5M.

Q4 Net income, excluding one-offs $63.6–66.6 million
⇘ decelerating

New. The fourth-quarter forecast assumes $1.9 million of interest expense, down from $8.3 million in Q3 after the term-loan payoff, $3.8 million of interest income, and $4.6 million of taxes.

FY26 Net income, excluding one-offs $250.0–253.0 million
🠅 raised from $228.0–234.0 million
⇗ accelerating

Raised. The middle of the range jumped $20.5 million, Passing through the third-quarter profit beat and lower fourth-quarter interest costs following the convertible note refinancing.

Q4 Diluted EPS, excluding one-offs $0.56–0.58
⇘ decelerating

New. At the middle of the range, fourth-quarter profit per share grows 18.8% from $0.48 a year ago, helped by a lower share count of 114.0 million.

FY26 Diluted EPS, excluding one-offs $2.16–2.19
🠅 raised from $1.95–2.00
⇗ accelerating

Raised. The middle of the full-year range rose $0.20 to $2.175, or 36.8% growth from $1.59 in 2025. It is the third raise of the year (+$0.085, +$0.035, +$0.200) and assumes 115.5 million diluted shares, down from the prior 117.0 million assumption.

FY26 Unlevered free cash flow $289.0–295.0 million
🠆 unchanged from $289.0–295.0 million
⇘ decelerating

Unchanged. Management kept the full-year cash flow target at $292.0 million at the middle of the range even after raising operating profit by $10.5 million, as higher capitalised software costs ($15.4 million vs $13.0 million prior) absorb part of the gain. By our math, that leaves $88.7 million for Q4, up 1.4% from a year ago.

❓ Key Questions

What share of total business has Tenable One reached?

Management previously targeted Tenable One reaching 40% of total business by the end of 2026, up from roughly one-third in May. Because the release gives no platform share or dollar revenue, investors cannot see if the year-end milestone is on track.

Did revenue from new customers shrink again in Q3?

In the second quarter, all revenue growth came from existing accounts while revenue from new customers fell $2.1 million from a year ago. With third-quarter new enterprise customer additions down 5.5% from last year, the 10-Q split will show if new-logo sales are still falling.

Why did full-year cash flow stay flat while profit rose?

Tenable raised its full-year operating profit outlook by $10.5 million at the midpoint and cut cash interest payments by $6.7 million, yet held unlevered free cash flow unchanged at $289–295 million. How much of the gap is fourth-quarter billing timing versus working capital?

How much revenue comes from Hexa AI token overages?

Tenable expanded its Hexa AI agent fleet and partnered with Anthropic, but has not shared attach rates or token overage revenue. Disclosing AI revenue would show whether these tools bring fresh spending or simply defend existing renewals.
