Stock Yards Bancorp (SYBT) Q3 2026 earnings review
Stock Yards Bancorp profit hits a record, but payoffs slow loan growth
Stock Yards Bancorp, a community bank in Kentucky, Indiana and Ohio, earned record profit from wider lending spreads while loan payoffs slowed growth. Revenue from businesses owned a year ago rose 9% by our math, and profit per share climbed 14% to $1.40 as deposit costs fell. Chief executive James A. Hillebrand said the May purchase of Field & Main lifted results, but the bank plans to trim assets below $10 billion by year-end to delay federal rules.
| Revenue from businesses owned a year ago | +8.8% total revenue +18.4% by our math |
|---|---|
| Profit per share | $1.40 +13.8% from a year ago |
| Net interest margin | 3.88% up 0.32 percentage points from a year ago |
| Year-end asset plan | < $10B requires cutting $260M in Q4 by our math |
โ๏ธ Verdict: ๐ข Bullish
The story got better because the bank's lending spread widened past its own prior warning while wealth-management fees hit a record. One caution: excluding Field & Main, deposits barely grew over the past year and loan write-offs reached $4 million this quarter.
The question now is whether Stock Yards can keep its wider lending spread while shrinking its balance sheet below $10 billion and absorbing the Federal Reserve's mid-September rate increase. Either the bank sheds low-yielding cash with little pain, or funding costs climb and squeeze interest income. Fourth-quarter deposit rates and year-end asset balances will decide it.
๐ Bull Case
Lower Deposit Rates Pushed Lending Margins Up
Net interest margin (NIM), the profit spread between what a bank earns on loans and pays on deposits, drives most of Stock Yards Bancorp's earnings. Chief executive James A. Hillebrand said "net interest margin expansion and broad-based strength in non-interest income" lifted quarterly profit to a record $43.5 million. Last quarter the Kentucky lender warned that its margin was near a peak, yet the spread widened again to 3.88%.
- Net interest margin: 3.88%, up 0.32 percentage points from a year ago and 0.04 points from last quarter
- Interest-bearing deposit rate paid: 2.28%, down 0.32 percentage points from a year ago
- Loan yield: 6.17%, down 0.02 percentage points from a year ago (6.10% excluding Field & Main)
The spread widened because the bank cut deposit rates faster than loan yields fell. Stock Yards achieved this by "strategically lowering deposit rate offerings in tandem with the Federal Reserveโs rate reductions over the past 12 months". Because it let low-yielding Treasury bills mature to fund higher-rate loans, total interest expense fell 3% from a year ago even after adding $4.3 million of deposit and borrowing costs from Field & Main.
What to watch: the rate paid on interest-bearing deposits in the fourth quarter after the Federal Reserve's mid-September rate increase. A jump in deposit costs would mean the lending margin has finally peaked.
Wealth Management Led Record Fee Income
Stock Yards relies on fee businesses, led by wealth management and trust (WM&T), to earn revenue that does not depend on interest rates. Total fee income rose 13% from a year ago to a record $27.6 million. Even excluding the $2.0 million added by Field & Main, underlying fee revenue grew 4.7% from a year ago by our math.
Wealth management revenue climbed 20% to $12.9 million, and grew 9.3% from businesses owned a year ago on higher stock markets and new clients. Treasury management fees โ charges to businesses for handling cash and payments โ rose 14% to $3.3 million almost entirely from existing operations. That fee growth helped hold the efficiency ratio, which measures overhead costs as a share of revenue, near 53.3% despite higher technology spending.
What to watch: wealth management assets under management, now at $8.95 billion, in the fourth-quarter report. Further client additions in the acquired Western Kentucky branches would show the bank is selling its trust services to Field & Main customers.
๐ป Bear Case
Early Payoffs Held Back Underlying Loan Growth
"Loan growth was positive, but lighter than anticipated, as payoffs remained elevated and continued to offset solid production," Hillebrand said. Headline loans jumped 15% from a year ago to $7.99 billion, but the May purchase of Field & Main supplied $606 million of that total. Loans from businesses owned a year ago rose 6.5%, or $453 million, driven by commercial real estate (CRE) and commercial and industrial (C&I) lending to businesses.
During the third quarter, underlying loans grew $131 million while the acquired Field & Main loan book shrank by $27 million, leaving net loan growth at $104 million. Borrowers also used less of their available credit: total credit line usage slipped to 48% from 50% in June, and business credit line usage ticked down to 36% from 37%. Hillebrand warned that "payoff activity to remain a headwind in the near term" is still the expectation.
What to watch: fourth-quarter underlying loan additions and business credit line usage. Another drop in line usage below 36% would show that business borrowers are holding back on expansion.
Underlying Deposits Shrank While Loan Write-Offs Rose
Stock Yards highlighted 10% annual deposit growth and strong credit metrics, but the numbers excluding Field & Main tell a tighter story. Without the $731 million of acquired Field & Main accounts, deposits grew less than 1% ($15 million) over the past year and shrank by $61 million from last quarter as higher-rate certificates of deposit ran off.
- Total deposits: down $96 million (-1.1%) from last quarter to $8.39 billion
- Net loan charge-offs (uncollectible loans written off): $3.95 million, up from $29,000 last quarter
- Corporate bond credit provision: $250,000 for "an event of default that is in the process of resolution"
Because the bank wrote off $3.95 million of loans while setting aside only $700,000 in new loan-loss reserves, its total loan allowance dipped from 1.38% of loans in June to 1.35%. Non-performing loans also improved from 0.31% to 0.27% because those bad loans were charged off rather than cured.
What to watch: fourth-quarter net charge-offs and non-performing loans. A second quarter of elevated write-offs would force the bank to rebuild its reserve through higher credit provisions.

Management Plans to Shrink Assets Under $10 Billion
US banks that finish a calendar year with more than $10 billion in assets face stricter federal supervision and caps on debit-card fees. Stock Yards ended September with $10.26 billion in assets after buying Field & Main. Hillebrand said the bank remains committed to "managing the balance sheet under $10 billion at year-end as we position the Company to officially transition across that threshold in 2027", which requires shedding at least $260 million of assets next quarter by our math.
Field & Main Systems Integration Completed in October
Operating expenses rose 19% from a year ago to $64.1 million, including $5.5 million of regular operating costs and $678,000 of one-time merger charges from Field & Main. Compensation fell by 2.1 percentage points of revenue by our math, but technology (+0.6 points), intangible amortization (+0.7 points) and other expenses (+0.9 points) offset that gain, partly due to "a singular non-recurring credit card fraud loss that totaled $850,000". In mid-October, the bank "completed the core systems conversion, an important milestone in fully integrating our two organizations".
๐ฒ Other KPIs
Tangible book value per share โ the bank's net worth per share after stripping out goodwill and other intangible assets from acquisitions โ rose 13.4% from a year ago and 2.2% from last quarter. Strong retained earnings lifted the tangible common equity ratio to 9.98% of tangible assets, up from 9.16% a year ago.
The bond portfolio shrank 15.0% from a year ago and 6.2% from June. The Louisville lender let short-term Treasury bills mature without replacing them and sold nearly all $56 million of bonds acquired with Field & Main, freeing up cash to fund higher-yielding loans and pay down $50 million of Federal Home Loan Bank borrowings.
Weighted average diluted shares rose 5.4% from a year ago and 1.8% from last quarter because Stock Yards issued stock to buy Field & Main on May 1. That share issuance explains why net income grew 20.1% from a year ago while profit per share rose 13.8%. The board also raised the quarterly dividend by a penny to $0.33.
๐ฎ Guidance
New. Management plans to bring total assets below the $10 billion regulatory threshold by December 31, before crossing it permanently in 2027. By our math, that requires shrinking the balance sheet by at least $260 million, or 2.5%, in the fourth quarter after a $108 million reduction in the third quarter.
New. The bank expects early loan payoffs to keep weighing on loan growth in the near term, though its lending pipeline remains steady entering the fourth quarter.
Unchanged. Stock Yards still expects to book its final one-time merger charges in the fourth quarter following the mid-October systems conversion, after recording $2.3 million in the second quarter and $678,000 in the third.
โ Key Questions
How will Stock Yards cut $260 million in Q4 assets?
Getting below $10 billion by year-end requires shedding at least $260 million of assets. Management did not specify whether it will run off more time deposits and overnight cash or sell securities, or how much net interest income that shrinkage will cost.
What caused the $4 million jump in Q3 loan write-offs?
Net loan charge-offs rose from $29,000 in the second quarter to $3.95 million in the third, yet the press release gave no explanation for which loan category or borrower caused the write-offs.
How will the September Fed rate hike affect deposit costs?
The Federal Reserve raised rates in mid-September after cutting them in late 2025. Investors need to know whether depositors are demanding higher yields again or if the bank's lending margin can stay near 3.88%.
How much cost savings will the October systems conversion bring?
Field & Main added $5.5 million of regular quarterly operating expenses in the third quarter. Now that the mid-October systems conversion is complete, management has not quantified the quarterly expense savings for 2027.
