Southern Company (SO) Q3 2026 earnings review
Southern Company electricity demand accelerates, but new shares slow per-share gains
Southern Company, the electric and gas utility serving nine million customers across the US Southeast, saw electricity demand speed up while financing costs took a bigger bite. Revenue rose 13% to $8.8 billion and profit per share excluding one-offs jumped 21%, beating the company's own plan by 29 cents. Chief executive Chris Womack pointed to demand from large commercial and industrial customers, and even without a 15-cent boost from hot weather, profit per share grew 12% by our math.
| Weather-adjusted retail electricity volume | +3.5% from a year ago (+2.3% in Q2) |
|---|---|
| Operating revenue | $8,843M +13.0% from a year ago |
| Profit per share, excluding one-offs | $1.94 +21.3% from a year ago ($1.65 plan) |
| 2027 wind repowering write-off outlook | Raised $15M to ~$135M pre-tax |
โ๏ธ Verdict: ๐ข Bullish
The story got better because underlying electricity volume accelerated across every customer group, led by commercial sales growing more than 7% after adjusting for weather. That proves existing data centers are drawing more power today rather than just signing contracts for 2028. One caution: the utility issued 20 million more shares since the second quarter and paid 12% more in interest, while wind equipment write-offs and regulatory disallowances kept rising.
The question now is how much of the 9% utility rate-base growth will reach shareholders on a per-share basis after stock issuance and higher interest bills. Either commercial electricity revenue compounds fast enough to outrun dilution, or ongoing stock sales and debt costs absorb the extra profit. The full-year profit outlook and contract totals on the conference call will show which side is winning.
๐ Bull Case
Commercial Demand and Georgia Power Drive the Quarter
"The Southeast is growing at a pace that is both unprecedented and transformational, and we believe Southern Company is well positioned for today and in the future," chief executive Chris Womack said. The electric and gas utility group backed that claim with a step-up in electricity volumes, led by "growing revenue from large commercial and industrial customers".
- Commercial electricity volume, adjusted for weather: up 7.3% from a year ago, matching the 7.4% pace in the second quarter
- Total retail electricity volume, adjusted for weather: up 3.5% from a year ago, up from 2.3% in both the first and second quarters
- Georgia Power: revenue rose 18.6% to $4.47 billion, and net profit rose 22.0% to $1.52 billion
- Alabama Power: revenue rose 8.2% to $2.51 billion, and net profit rose 12.4% to $661 million
This matters because third-quarter commercial electricity sales faced a tougher comparison than in the spring, yet growth did not slow. Residential volume also rose 1.3% after stripping out weather, reversing a 0.7% drop in the second quarter, so the demand expansion now reaches beyond data centers.
What to watch: the exact megawatts of data center load connected to the grid in the third-quarter filing. A figure well above the 1.2 gigawatts reported in June would confirm that new computer facilities drove the 7.3% commercial volume gain.
Profit Beat Rests on Rates and Volume
Southern Company earned $1.94 per share excluding one-offs, up 21.3% from a year ago and 29 cents above the $1.65 estimate management gave in August. Hot summer weather helped, adding 15 cents per share compared with last year's third quarter.
Even without the weather boost, profit per share excluding one-offs would have reached $1.79 by our math, up 11.9% from a year ago and 14 cents above the company's plan. Higher retail rates and pricing added 21 cents per share, and higher customer usage added 11 cents. That pushes nine-month profit excluding one-offs to $4.40 per share, leaving just 10 to 20 cents needed in the fourth quarter to reach the prior $4.50 to $4.60 full-year plan.
What to watch: whether finance chief David P. Poroch raises the full-year profit outlook on the conference call. Holding the $4.50 to $4.60 range after earning $4.40 in nine months would point to a steep fourth-quarter drop.
Positives this quarter didn't test
Three multi-year growth drivers depend on contract and regulatory updates that live in the conference call and quarterly filing rather than the earnings release.
- Large-load contracting pace: total signed contracts stood at 17 gigawatts in the second quarter; the call and filing will show how much of the 3-gigawatt late-stage pipeline became signed contracts.
- New power plant bidding in Georgia and Alabama: requests for proposals for 2 to 6 gigawatts in Georgia and additional capacity in Alabama are underway; the February 2027 capital plan update will show how much enters the $81 billion spending budget.
- Southern Power contract renewals: the wholesale generation unit earned $52 million in reported net profit versus $3 million a year ago, and the call will update pricing on expiring power contracts.
๐ป Bear Case
Share Dilution and Interest Costs Accelerate
Southern Company funds its $81 billion construction budget with a mix of new stock and debt, and the cost of both sped up this quarter. The company cited "dilution impacts from additional shares outstanding" alongside higher interest charges as the main drags on per-share profit.
- Average basic shares: 1,157 million, up 5.0% from a year ago and up 20 million shares from the second quarter by our math
- Per-share drag from new shares: 9 cents in the third quarter, up from 4 cents in the second quarter and 3 cents in the first
- Net interest expense: $842 million, up 11.5% from a year ago, driving an 11-cent per-share drag alongside other financing items
- Debt retirement loss: $43 million pre-tax in the quarter, plus a $57 million tax charge tied to 2025 debt repurchases
This matters because the gap between total profit growth and per-share profit growth is widening. Net profit excluding one-offs rose 27.0% from a year ago, but per-share profit rose 21.3%, so share issuance ate nearly six percentage points of the gain.
What to watch: the settlement schedule for forward stock sales in the third-quarter filing. Settling the remaining 11.5 million forward shares before 2027 would keep share count growth near 5%.
Wind Repowering and Regulatory Write-Offs Keep Climbing
Management focuses investors on profit excluding one-offs, which leaves out "accelerated depreciation and decommissioning costs related to the repowering of certain wind facilities at Southern Power Company". It also excludes "costs associated with Nicor Gas capital investments disallowed by the Illinois Commerce Commission".
Both charges grew this quarter. Wind equipment write-offs took $118 million pre-tax in the third quarter and $414 million over nine months, and Southern Company raised its 2027 write-off projection from $120 million to $135 million. Nicor Gas recorded another $9 million pre-tax disallowance loss ($19 million year-to-date), while a $57 million tax charge from 2025 debt retirements pushed the nine-month gap between reported and adjusted profit to $440 million.
What to watch: the Illinois Supreme Court ruling on the Nicor Gas appeal and any new disallowance charges in the fourth quarter. A ruling against the company would turn recurring small write-offs into a permanent cut to gas utility returns.
Risks this quarter didn't answer
Five standing operational and legal risks were not updated in the third-quarter earnings release and await the quarterly filing.
- Customer ramp speed: whether large data center customers are ramping electricity usage in line with original approval schedules.
- Georgia capacity appeal: the Fulton County court appeal seeking to overturn certification for at least 757 megawatts of approved Georgia Power generation.
- Power plant construction schedule: on-time completion of Plant Yates Unit 8 (441 megawatts) scheduled for the fourth quarter of 2026.
- Coal ash lawsuits: the reinstated Mobile Baykeeper lawsuit over Plant Barry coal ash closure and the pending Coosa Riverkeeper suit.
- Labor litigation: the nuclear-industry wage-suppression class action naming Southern Company and Southern Nuclear.

Operating Margin Rose on Slower Depreciation Growth
Operating margin rose 0.8 percentage points from a year ago to 33.9% as the 13.0% revenue jump outpaced fixed costs. Depreciation and amortization rose 1.5% to $1.44 billion, falling by 1.9 percentage points of revenue, while day-to-day operations and maintenance costs held steady at 20.9% of revenue ($1.85 billion), offsetting a 1.2-point rise in non-income taxes to $434 million.
๐ฒ Other KPIs
Up 55.6% from $90 million a year ago, and up from $128 million in the second quarter and $121 million in the first. This line โ the regulated return utilities record on equity tied up in power plants under construction โ added 4 cents to third-quarter profit per share and 13 cents over the first nine months.
Up 0.7%, or 62,000 customers, from a year ago. Electric utility customers rose 1.1% (48,000 additions) to 4.63 million, while natural gas distribution customers rose 0.3% (14,000 additions) to 4.37 million. Steady customer additions provide a baseline of retail demand alongside commercial data center growth.
Down 16.0% from $25 million a year ago in the seasonally slowest summer quarter, even as segment revenue rose 5.3% to $773 million. Over the first nine months, gas segment net profit is up 8.0% to $593 million despite $14 million of after-tax write-offs at Nicor Gas.
๐ฎ Guidance
Raised. The utility group recorded $118 million of pre-tax wind equipment write-offs in the third quarter ($414 million over nine months) and projects $100 million for the fourth quarter. By our math, that puts the full-year charge at $514 million, up $13 million from the $501 million implied at mid-year.
Raised. Expected pre-tax wind repowering write-offs for 2027 moved up by $15 million from the second-quarter schedule (and by $35 million from the $100 million stated in the second-quarter filing text). It is the third raise since the third quarter of 2025: +$75M, $0M, +$20M, +$15M.
โ Key Questions
Did Southern Company raise its 2026 profit outlook?
The earnings release did not include full-year profit targets. After earning $4.40 per share excluding one-offs in nine months, the prior $4.50 to $4.60 outlook would leave only 10 to 20 cents for the fourth quarter versus 55 cents last year.
How many gigawatts of large-load contracts were signed?
Total contracted large-load capacity reached 17 gigawatts in the second quarter, with 3 gigawatts in final stages. The release did not update this figure, which tests whether data center signing momentum held up.
When will the remaining forward stock sales settle?
Basic share count rose by 20 million in the third quarter to 1,157 million, cutting per-share profit growth by 9 cents. Investors need the settlement schedule for the remaining 11.5 million forward shares.
What triggered the $57 million debt tax charge?
Footnote 3 disclosed a $57 million tax charge in the third quarter tied to 2025 convertible note repurchases, excluded from adjusted profit. Management has not explained why the tax benefit changed a year later.
