SNDL Inc. (SNDL) Q3 2026 earnings review
SNDL retail margins rise, but production losses and write-downs hit
SNDL, the Canadian operator of liquor and cannabis stores, saw its cannabis production losses deepen and took a large asset write-down. Third-quarter revenue slipped 3% from a year ago to $238 million as liquor sales declined in their peak summer season. Gross margins at both retail chains rose to 27%, but the cannabis cultivation division posted a negative 6% gross margin by our math and recorded roughly $52 million in asset and goodwill impairments.
| Net revenue | $238.0M -2.5% from a year ago |
|---|---|
| Cannabis production gross margin | -6.0% 1.8% last quarter; 13.4% a year ago |
| Operating loss (including write-downs) | -$48.3M -$11.1M a year ago |
| Cash sent to US joint venture | $60.8M Unrestricted cash fell to $132.5M |
โ๏ธ Verdict: ๐ด Bearish
The story got worse because cannabis production lost money before overhead costs and the US investment arm drained a large share of cash. Instead of rebounding from last quarter's pre-roll launch issues, cultivation revenue dropped 28% from a year ago and gross profit turned negative. In addition, SNDL sent $61 million in cash to its SunStream joint venture, reducing unrestricted cash to $132 million without yet consolidating its US stores.
The question now is whether the cultivation slump and the $61 million US cash transfer are one-time restructuring costs or ongoing drains. Either the US venture begins generating cash and production fixes take hold, or weak wholesale demand and US funding needs keep consuming retail store profits. Fourth-quarter cultivation margins and the full management report's free cash flow figure will tell.
๐ Bull Case
Retail Stores Held a 27% Gross Margin
SNDL runs two retail chains in Canada: liquor stores under banners such as Wine and Beyond and Ace Liquor, and cannabis shops mainly under Value Buds. Both retail groups expanded their gross margin to 27.0% this quarter, up from roughly 26.3% a year ago by our math.
That pricing discipline helped cushion a 2.5% drop in total company sales. Cannabis retail gross profit rose 2.9% from a year ago to $23.1 million, and segment operating profit rose 3.9% to $5.2 million because store margins offset flat top-line sales.
What to watch: fourth-quarter retail gross margins during the holiday shopping season. Holding 27% during the promotional fourth quarter would show that store pricing power is durable.
Lower Overhead and Share Costs Helped Operations
Chief executive Zach George previously launched efficiency programmes to add over $20 million in operating profit and continued buying back stock. In the third quarter, general and administrative overhead fell 5.8% from a year ago to $43.3 million, or by 0.6 percentage points of revenue.
- Share-based compensation: $1.8 million, down 3.7 percentage points of revenue from a year ago
- Unallocated corporate overhead loss: $2.8 million, down from $13.3 million a year ago
- Operating profit excluding impairments and restructuring: $4.6 million by our math, against a $7.9 million loss a year ago
- Third-quarter share buybacks: $10.0 million in cash, bringing nine-month repurchases to $43.1 million
Lower corporate expenses and a 6% smaller share count by our math show that overhead cuts are landing, even though production losses hid the savings in the headline net loss. What to watch: fourth-quarter general and administrative expenses, which will show if the $20 million profit plan met its year-end goal.
๐ป Bear Case
Cannabis Production Margin Turned Negative
Cannabis Operations is SNDL's cultivation and manufacturing division, which grows flower and makes pre-rolls for provincial boards, wholesale partners and its own stores. Management previously deployed profit initiatives aimed at fixing this division after launching the Jeeter pre-roll brand earlier in 2026.
Instead of recovering in the third quarter, the division's gross margin fell below zero to minus 6.0% by our math, down from positive 1.8% last quarter and 13.4% a year ago. Gross revenue in the division dropped 27.7% from a year ago to $27.0 million, and external sales after removing transfers to SNDL's own stores fell 11.1% to $17.6 million.
- Division gross profit: negative $1.6 million, against positive $5.0 million a year ago
- Company-wide inventory write-downs: $3.5 million in the quarter, almost double the $1.8 million a year ago
- Division operating loss: $64.7 million, including roughly $52.6 million of asset and goodwill write-downs by our math
- Division operating loss excluding write-downs: about $12.1 million by our math, wider than the $10.9 million total loss a year ago
Company-wide cost of sales rose 2.0 percentage points of revenue, and asset impairments jumped 21.1 percentage points as goodwill fell by $52.0 million from June. What to watch: fourth-quarter Cannabis Operations gross margin, because another negative reading would mean production costs exceed selling prices despite the efficiency plan.
US Credit Portfolio Drew $61 Million of Cash
SNDL invests in US cannabis companies through a joint venture called SunStream Bancorp, which completed a foreclosure restructuring of US medical cannabis operator Parallel in July 2026. That restructuring is both a growth driver that lifted SNDL's share of joint-venture profit to $6.9 million this quarter and a balance-sheet risk that requires cash before SNDL can consolidate the business.
During the third quarter, the company sent $60.8 million of capital contributions to its equity-accounted investees, compared with a $0.5 million cash return a year ago. Because of that outflow and $10.0 million in share buybacks, unrestricted cash dropped by $50.7 million in three months to $132.5 million, while the US investment portfolio's book value rose to $467.7 million.
What to watch: future capital contributions to SunStream and the date SNDL takes direct control of Parallel. Until SNDL consolidates Parallel's stores, the US venture drains parent-company cash without adding to reported revenue or operating cash flow.
Liquor Sales Fell in Peak Season
Liquor Retail is SNDL's largest revenue source and has fixed store-lease costs, "causing the Company to report a higher level of earnings in the third and fourth quarters," SNDL wrote. Even in this peak summer period, liquor sales fell 3.3% from a year ago to $134.8 million, extending a multi-quarter revenue decline.
Higher store gross margins could not fully make up for the lost volume and overhead allocations, so segment operating profit fell 8.4% from a year ago to $6.0 million. Meanwhile, Cannabis Retail sales grew only 0.7% in the quarter, and by our math nine-month sales from cannabis stores owned a year ago fell 1.7% after stripping out $3.3 million from the five acquired 1CM shops.
What to watch: fourth-quarter Liquor Retail revenue and same-store sales in the full annual report. A drop during the holiday quarter would reduce the cash that funds the rest of the group.
Risks This Quarter Did Not Answer
The supplied filing contains the condensed interim financial statements through Note 9, so four watch items that live in management's discussion and analysis or later footnotes are not yet readable.
- Company-defined free cash flow: not in the cash flow statement; the full management discussion will show how much of the $14.3 million first-half deficit was recovered.
- Same-store sales for liquor and cannabis: not in the segment footnote; the management discussion will show whether store traffic improved.
- International cannabis export revenue: not broken out in the segment table; the management commentary will show if exports grew from $5.0 million in Q2.
- Exact goodwill impairment breakdown: Note 14 is truncated, though the balance sheet shows goodwill fell $52.0 million in Q3.

Alberta Lifted Its Ban on US Alcohol
Trade talks between Canada and the United States stopped during the third quarter after both countries added new tariffs. Earlier, several Canadian provinces pulled US alcohol from store shelves in retaliation, but SNDL noted that "some provinces, including Alberta, have lifted their ban on United States liquor imports" where most of its liquor stores operate, and "The Company did not experience a significant impact to its financial performance during the nine months ended September 30, 2026."
๐ฒ Other KPIs
Operating cash flow stayed positive in the seasonally strong third quarter, rising from $3.7 million in Q2, but fell 41.5% from $31.7 million a year ago. The year-over-year drop happened because working capital released $2.2 million of cash this quarter, compared with a $14.2 million release in Q3 2025.
Total inventory fell 3.5% from $133.4 million in June and sits 2.7% above a year ago. By our math from Note 6, SNDL harvested 10,676 kilograms of dry cannabis in the third quarter, up 27.0% from a year ago, even as external cannabis production sales declined.
Spending on store and facility equipment dropped 76.9% from $5.19 million a year ago and down from $1.79 million in Q2, equal to 0.5% of revenue. By our math, operating cash flow minus these capital additions was $17.35 million in Q3.
โ Key Questions
Why did SunStream require $60.8 million of cash in Q3?
SNDL contributed $60.8 million to its equity-accounted investees right as Parallel completed its July foreclosure restructuring. Investors need to know whether this cash paid off Parallel debt, funded working capital, or covered transaction costs, and whether more cash calls remain.
What drove Cannabis Operations gross margin to minus 6%?
Management previously blamed the Q2 margin drop to 1.8% on the Jeeter pre-roll ramp. In Q3, segment revenue fell 27.7% and gross margin turned negative alongside $3.5 million of inventory write-downs, raising questions about ongoing contract costs and wholesale demand.
What was company-defined free cash flow in the third quarter?
Chief executive Zach George set a full-year target of positive free cash flow after posting a $14.3 million deficit in the first half. Because the company's custom definition deducts lease payments and certain working-capital items, the exact Q3 reading in the MD&A is needed.
When will SNDL consolidate Parallel's US medical cannabis results?
Parallel's restructuring closed on July 27, 2026, yet the business remained an equity-accounted investment at September 30. Management has not yet detailed the legal structure or the exact date when Parallel's 56 stores will enter consolidated revenue.
