Silicom (SILC) Q3 2026 earnings review

Silicom returns to profit, but component stockpiles drain its cash

Silicom, a maker of server networking cards and edge appliances, returned to profit Excluding one-offs while its cash pile shrank again. Third-quarter sales jumped 71% from a year ago to $27 million, which covered overhead costs and produced $0.3 million in net profit excluding one-offs. Chief executive Liron Eizenman raised the full-year sales plan to $96 million to $98 million, and the fourth-quarter outlook sits above what the company's prior plan pointed to.

At a glance
Revenue$26.7M +71% from a year ago
Profit per share, excluding one-offs$0.04 -$0.36 a year ago
Total cash and securities$45.0M $54.9M last quarter (by our math)
Full-year revenue outlookRaised $3M middle of the range: 57% growth

โš–๏ธ Verdict: ๐ŸŸข Bullish

The story got better because rising shipments pushed the business past its operating breakeven point a quarter earlier than planned. Raising the fourth-quarter sales target to $27 million to $28 million also shows that order momentum is holding up into year-end. The bad news: paying supplier bills for its $73 million component stockpile drained another $10 million from cash and securities.

The question now is whether this sales surge reflects lasting customer deployments or temporary stockpiling during a memory-chip shortage. If customers are deploying the gear, inventory will fall and cash will rebuild; if they are hoarding parts, orders will drop once supply loosens. Fourth-quarter inventory and cash balances will show which way the cycle is moving.

Operating Leverage Delivers Early Profit

Silicom makes networking cards and edge appliances for servers, and its recovery is now covering its overhead. "Driven by strong execution and the significant leverage inherent in our business model, we returned to non-GAAP profitability well ahead of our initial expectations," chief executive Liron Eizenman said. Excluding one-offs, the networking group earned $257 thousand, or $0.04 per share, compared with a $2.1 million loss a year ago.

  • Operating profit excluding one-offs: $20 thousand, compared with a $2.4 million loss a year ago
  • Research and development: 20.8% of sales, down 11.3 percentage points from a year ago
  • Selling and marketing: 7.3% of sales, down 4.2 percentage points
  • General and administrative overhead: 5.1% of sales, down 2.5 percentage points

This matters because the company kept operating costs near $8.9 million while revenue jumped 71%. Still, operations alone barely broke even at $20 thousand before interest income helped, and the business recorded a $341 thousand loss under standard accounting.

What to watch: fourth-quarter operating income excluding one-offs. A wider profit on the planned $27 million to $28 million of sales would show the business can earn money from operations without relying on interest income.

Fourth-Quarter Plan Beats Prior Math

Customer orders from past contract wins are lifting sales faster than the company planned three months ago. Third-quarter revenue rose 71% from a year ago to $26.7 million, beating the $25 million to $26 million target range. Silicom raised its full-year sales plan by $3 million at the middle of the range to $96 million to $98 million.

By our math, the old full-year plan pointed to about $25.6 million of sales for the fourth quarter. The new fourth-quarter forecast of $27 million to $28 million sits almost $2 million above that mark and calls for 3% growth from the third quarter. Because last year's third and fourth quarters were depressed at $15.6 million and $16.9 million, the 71% and 63% yearly growth rates look dramatic, so the quarter-to-quarter step is the cleaner test.

What to watch: first-quarter 2027 revenue outlook on the next report. Another sequential rise above $28 million would show that core demand is still climbing rather than levelling off after an easy comparison.

Design Win Count Has a Math Gap

Silicom tracks Design Wins, which are multi-year agreements where a customer builds Silicom's hardware into its own equipment. "The two new Design Wins we added this quarter bring our year-to-date total to eight, already exceeding the low end of our full-year guidance," Eizenman said. The company continues to target seven to nine wins for the year.

That keeps the contract pipeline moving, because these agreements turn into shipments over the next two to three years. However, the numbers in the release do not add up cleanly. The hardware maker already reported seven wins for the first six months of 2026, so adding two in the third quarter should have brought the nine-month total to nine rather than eight.

What to watch: the final 2026 Design Win count next quarter. A clarification on whether one earlier win dropped out or was double-counted will tell how fast the 2027 revenue layer is building.

๐Ÿป Bear Case

๐Ÿ”ด๐Ÿ”ด persistent CASH contradicts narrative

Working Capital Drains Another $10 Million

Eizenman said the strategic plan is "giving us the means to invest both in our core business and in the significant long-term potential upside of AI Inference", which is hardware that helps run trained artificial intelligence models. On the balance sheet, the company previously stocked up on components to guard against memory-chip shortages, and that stockpile is still tying up cash.

  • Cash and marketable securities: $45.0 million, down from $54.9 million last quarter and $73.6 million at year-end by our math
  • Inventories: $72.8 million, up 60% from a year ago and up $2.1 million from last quarter
  • Trade accounts payable: $19.9 million, down $5.3 million from last quarter

This cuts against the self-funding claim because the business burned through $10 million of cash in three months to pay supplier bills while inventory crept higher. Stockpiles now equal 2.7 times quarterly sales. If customer buying slows as it did in 2023, Silicom will hold $72.8 million of parts bought during a shortage.

What to watch: fourth-quarter inventory and total cash. A drop in inventory below $70 million alongside higher cash would show that the component stockpile is finally turning back into money.

Hardware Mix Keeps Gross Margin Down

Silicom's revenue recovery has not lifted the profit it makes on each unit shipped. Gross margin excluding one-offs was 30.3% in the third quarter, down 1.5 percentage points from 31.8% a year ago by our math, as cost of sales rose to 70.0% of revenue on a standard accounting basis.

That sits inside the 27% to 32% band the company previously targeted, but it remains below last year's level for a second straight quarter. Because the release does not separate memory-chip price pass-through from unit volume, a 30.3% gross margin leaves open whether higher component costs are squeezing product profitability.

What to watch: fourth-quarter gross margin excluding one-offs. A reading below 30% would show that component inflation or lower-margin hardware shipments are weighing on unit economics.

๐Ÿ”ด persistent PRODUCT

Risks this quarter didn't answer

Four standing questions about revenue quality and new products got no numbers in the third-quarter press release.

  • AI-Inference 2026 revenue: no dollar update in the release on the $3 million to $4 million previously expected for this year; fourth-quarter results will show what shipped.
  • White-label switches (unbranded network switches): listed in the pipeline, with one quarter left to meet the goal of first production orders before year-end.
  • Price versus unit volume: not disclosed in the release; conference call remarks or the annual filing will show how much of the 71% growth came from passing on memory costs.
  • Customer concentration: not in the release; the annual Form 20-F filing will show whether the top two customers stayed above 23% of sales.

๐Ÿ’ฒ Other KPIs

Trade accounts receivable (26Q3) $16.9 million
โ‡˜ decelerating

Uncollected customer bills rose 44.3% from a year ago and 3.1% from last quarter, slower than the 71.1% jump in sales. After nearly doubling in the first half of the year as shipments ramped up, receivables stabilised this quarter, meaning customer collections kept pace with the latest revenue step-up.

Diluted share count (26Q3) 5.78 million
โ‡— accelerating

The average share count rose 1.4% from a year ago and 1.2% from the second quarter. Treasury shares stayed unchanged at $55.2 million as the networking hardware maker paused buybacks, while paid-in capital rose by $2.0 million during the quarter from employee stock compensation and option exercises.

Intangible assets (26Q3) $5.06 million
โ‡— accelerating

Intangible assets โ€” non-physical assets such as acquired technology or capitalised software โ€” nearly doubled from $2.57 million at the end of 2025 and rose 18.1% from $4.28 million last quarter. The steady quarterly build represents an additional cash outflow outside the income statement's operating expenses.

๐Ÿ”ฎ Guidance

Q4 2026 Revenue $27.0โ€“28.0 million
๐Ÿ … raised from ~$25.6 million (implied)
โ‡˜ decelerating

Raised against the prior implied figure. The new plan calls for about 62.6% growth from a year ago at the $27.5 million middle of the range, and 2.9% growth from the third quarter. Silicom has beaten its quarterly sales plan four times in a row by an average of 10.6%; by our math, Q4 sales would reach $30.4 million if the pattern holds.

FY 2026 Revenue $96.0โ€“98.0 million
๐Ÿ … raised from $93.0โ€“95.0 million
โ‡— accelerating

Raised. The middle of the full-year range moved up by $3 million to $97 million, which points to 56.6% growth for the year by our math. It is the second straight raise after the $11.5 million increase last quarter, and with $69.6 million already booked in the first nine months, the target is well within reach.

FY 2026 New Design Wins 7โ€“9 wins
๐Ÿ † unchanged from 7โ€“9 wins
โ‡’ stable

Unchanged. Management kept the full-year target at seven to nine wins and expects to meet or beat the top end. With eight wins already reported for the first nine months, the company needs only one more in the fourth quarter to reach the top of its range.

โ“ Key Questions

Why do seven first-half wins plus two equal eight?

Silicom reported seven year-to-date Design Wins in the second quarter and said it added two in the third quarter, yet stated the nine-month total is eight. Clarifying whether a prior win was cancelled or restated matters for judging pipeline reliability.

When will the $73 million inventory stop draining cash?

Total cash and securities fell another $10 million this quarter to $45 million as the company paid down supplier bills while inventory rose to $72.8 million. Investors need to know when working capital will turn cash-positive.

How much of the 71% growth came from memory prices?

Passing higher memory-chip costs on to customers inflates revenue without adding profit dollars, which may explain why gross margin slipped 1.5 percentage points from a year ago. Management has not quantified the price versus unit volume split.

Did AI-Inference orders ship in the third quarter?

Management previously pointed to $3 million to $4 million of AI-Inference revenue in the second half of 2026. The release gave no dollar figure, leaving open how much of the second-half ramp comes from AI versus older products.
