Sify Technologies (SIFY) Q2 2027 earnings review

Sify's data center orders jump, but its debt climbs fast

Sify Technologies, an Indian data center and telecom network operator, grew sales quickly while its construction bill climbed higher. Revenue jumped 31% from a year ago as fiber network demand sped up and its digital software unit turned a small operating profit. Finance chief M P Vijay Kumar reported that sold data center capacity waiting to go live rose to 113 megawatts, which the company plans to deliver over the next three quarters.

โš–๏ธ Verdict: ๐ŸŸข Bullish

The story got better because Sify signed 34 megawatts of new data center orders by our math, easing fears that it was building empty facilities. The Digital Services unit also earned money after seven quarters of losses. The bad news: live data center capacity barely moved this quarter, total debt rose by almost a fifth in three months to fund construction, and the planned data center subsidiary listing must happen by January or restart regulatory filings.

The question now is whether Sify can switch on its data center backlog and complete the subsidiary listing before debt costs eat up its cash flow. Either the 113 megawatts come online on schedule alongside a January listing, or commissioning delays and a filing restart force the company to take on more debt. Third-quarter live megawatts and a listing date before January 31 will settle both.

Data Center Backlog Jumped by 32 Megawatts

Sify builds and rents out data centers in India, measuring its capacity in megawatts (MW) of power. Critics worried that the company was building too many facilities without customers after new sales slowed to 5 MW last quarter. This quarter, the Indian infrastructure provider signed a "major capacity deal with a global leader in AI Cloud compute" and expanded contracts with banks and technology firms.

  • Contracted backlog awaiting delivery: 113 MW, up from 81 MW last quarter
  • Live revenue-generating capacity: 136 MW, up 2 MW from last quarter by our math
  • Total committed capacity: 249 MW out of roughly 300 MW under construction

By our math, Sify added 34 MW of new customer commitments in the quarter. That leaves about 51 MW of uncontracted space under construction, down from 85 MW three months ago, which lowers the risk of empty buildings. Finance chief M P Vijay Kumar said "the pricing is getting better, and the returns are also improving" because demand exceeds supply.

What to watch: live operational megawatts in the third quarter. A jump above 160 MW would show that Sify is turning this record order book into paying space.

Network Revenue Accelerated on AI Fiber Demand

Sify's network division connects offices, cloud providers and data centers across India. Growth in this unit picked up after a slow start to the year because artificial intelligence requires heavier data links between facilities. The company delivered high-capacity internet to a Chennai facility "built to carry GPU-based AI training and inference workloads" and finished its long-distance fiber route between Hyderabad and Chennai.

Network revenue rose 37.4% from a year ago to INR 5,879 million, up from 8.7% growth last quarter. However, segment operating expenses climbed faster than sales, so the division's profit margin slipped by 2.9 percentage points to 15.6%. Vijay Kumar noted that unit prices naturally fall as customers buy more bandwidth, so revenue will grow slower than data volume.

What to watch: Network Services segment profit margin next quarter. A stabilization near 16% would show that Sify's own long-distance fiber lowers delivery costs enough to offset industry price pressure.

Digital Services Turned a Small Profit

Digital Services, which manages cloud software and security for corporate customers, has lost money for seven straight quarters while switching from one-off installation projects to recurring subscriptions. Management previously pushed back the timeline for this division to break even several times. This quarter, revenue grew 30.6% from a year ago to INR 2,747 million against an easy comparison, and the unit earned an operating profit of INR 19 million.

That compares with a loss of INR 135 million last quarter and a loss of INR 284 million a year ago. The narrower loss helped Sify post a consolidated net profit of INR 40 million, its second profitable quarter in a row. One quarter of small profit eases the drag on the group, though a sustained recovery requires another quarter of positive earnings.

What to watch: Digital Services segment result in the third quarter. A second positive reading without one-off hardware sales would confirm the turnaround is durable.

๐Ÿ”ด๐Ÿ”ด persistent CAPITAL ALLOCATION contradicts narrative

Debt Climbs as IPO Faces January Deadline

"While capacity expansion and capability building have implications for depreciation, interest and manpower costs, we remain focused on ensuring that capital allocation is supported by sound financial planning," Vijay Kumar said. Yet Sify is funding record construction with debt while the planned initial public offering (IPO) of its data center subsidiary, Sify Infinit Spaces, remains unscheduled.

  • Quarterly capital spending: INR 8,573 million, or 62.1% of revenue by our math
  • Total borrowings: INR 54,681 million, up 18.6% from last quarter and 58.3% from a year ago
  • Interest expense on debt and leases: INR 1,142 million, eating up 96.5% of operating profit

Vijay Kumar revealed a hard regulatory cutoff for the subsidiary listing: "There is a timeline available, which is up to the end of January. And beyond that, it is a restart process." With INR 18,572 million of short-term debt against INR 5,868 million of cash, missing the January window would force Sify to rely on more debt or private equity from its sponsor, Kotak.

What to watch: a formal IPO launch date before January 31, 2027. Passing that deadline without listing would trigger a refiling delay and keep interest costs consuming almost all operating profit.

Data Center Revenue Dipped on Delivery Timing

Data Center Services is Sify's main profit engine, generating 71% of segment profit this quarter. Last quarter, management said its 81 MW backlog would begin generating revenue at the end of the second quarter. Instead, live capacity rose by just 2 MW to 136 MW, and division revenue fell 2.1% from the first quarter to INR 5,172 million.

Vijay Kumar attributed the sequential dip to lower pass-through electricity charges and the absence of one-time setup fees that boosted the first quarter. Consequently, stripping out lower-margin power revenue helped the division's profit margin rise 1.1 percentage points from last quarter to 44.5%. Still, the big jump in capacity is now slated for the next three quarters rather than starting in the second quarter.

What to watch: Data Center Services revenue in the third quarter. A rise well past the first quarter's INR 5,282 million is required to prove that the 81 MW scheduled for this fiscal year is turning on.

๐Ÿ”ด persistent DISCLOSURE

Risks this quarter didn't answer

Two governance and accounting concerns from prior quarters received no new details in the release or on the call.

  • Balance sheet restatement: March 2026 shareholder equity remains printed at INR 18,933 million vs INR 24,994 million reported in Q4, and net debt deducts INR 3,482 million of restricted loan deposits; the full annual filing notes are needed to reconcile the convertible bond accounting.
  • Parent shareholder dilution: American depositary receipt holders cannot participate directly in the Sify Infinit Spaces IPO; the final prospectus will show how much of the data center unit the parent company retains after the offering and Kotak's conversion.

India AI Demand Outstrips Data Center Supply

Chairman Raju Vegesna said "India is no longer preparing for the digital futureโ€”it is actively shaping it" as companies and government agencies adopt artificial intelligence. Vijay Kumar added that "the industry demand is in far excess of the supply which is available" across Indian data centers. To meet long-term demand, Sify holds a land bank across seven cities that can support more than 1 gigawatt of capacity, plus two new edge sites live in Lucknow and Mohali.

Sify added 26 fiber connection points during the quarter to reach 1,264 across India, up 6% from a year ago. The company also won provisional telecom department clearance for two subsea cable landing stations, including Visakhapatnam.

๐Ÿ”ฎ Guidance

FY27 Operational Data Center Capacity Additions 81 MW
๐Ÿ † unchanged from 81 MW
โ‡— accelerating

Unchanged. Finance chief M P Vijay Kumar confirmed that the 81 MW of contracted capacity scheduled for fiscal 2027 remains on track. Because live capacity stood at 129 MW at the end of fiscal 2026 and 136 MW at the end of Q2, the plan leaves 74 MW to be switched on in the second half of the year by our math.

Total Contracted Data Center Backlog Delivery (27Q3โ€“28Q1) 113 MW
โ‡— accelerating

New. Sify has 113 MW of sold capacity waiting to go live, and Vijay Kumar said "We will be delivering this beginning this quarter over the next 3 quarters." Adding 113 MW to the 136 MW already live brings total revenue-generating capacity to 249 MW by the first quarter of fiscal 2028, mostly in Mumbai and Noida.
