Shell plc (SHEL) Q3 2026 earnings review

Shell's refining profit climbs, while Canadian gas hides Qatari outages

High fuel refining margins and gas prices lifted Shell's profit again, even while the Middle East conflict curtailed its Qatari gas production. Profit excluding one-offs reached $10.8 billion, nearly double a year ago, as refinery profits outweighed softer oil trading. The British energy group closed its buyout of Canadian gas producer ARC Resources, approved the second phase of LNG Canada, and raised its next share buyback to $5 billion.

โš–๏ธ Verdict: ๐ŸŸข Bullish

The story got better because the company locked in two major Canadian gas expansions while trimming its full-year capital spending plan by $1 billion. It also accelerated buybacks to mop up the 228 million shares issued for ARC. The bad news: excluding ARC's 370 thousand barrels per day, the fourth-quarter outlook leaves underlying hydrocarbon output down 10% from a year ago by our math, and the company booked another $2.1 billion pre-tax write-down on European biogas.

The question now is whether the new Canadian gas volumes build genuine per-share cash flow growth or merely replace lost fields and war-disrupted Qatari supply once conflict-inflated refining margins fade. If they add net growth, cash flow stays high when fuel spreads normalise; if they only replace depletion, earnings drop back with commodity prices. The 2026 proved reserves report and Capital Markets Update in February 2027 will show the net balance.

๐Ÿ‚ Bull Case

๐ŸŸข๐ŸŸข strengthening MARGIN

Refining Margins Drove Earnings Near $11 Billion

Shell's profit excluding one-offs (Adjusted Earnings) rose 10% from last quarter to $10.8 billion, nearly double the $5.4 billion it earned a year ago. The driver remains the Middle East conflict, which has lifted global fuel margins and natural gas prices, though those gains will reverse if the conflict resolves. Even as oil trading cooled and crude oil prices dipped from the second quarter, wider fuel-making spreads carried the group.

  • Chemicals and Products profit excluding one-offs: $3.86 billion, up from $2.88 billion last quarter and $550 million a year ago
  • Refining and oil products profit excluding one-offs: $3.75 billion, while chemicals earned $103 million
  • Integrated Gas profit excluding one-offs: $3.04 billion, up 13% from last quarter on higher liquefied natural gas prices and volumes
  • Operating expenses: down 3.9 percentage points of revenue from a year ago, as selling and administrative costs fell 2.1 points and production costs fell 1.5 points

What to watch: fourth-quarter refining and trading commentary when full-year results arrive on February 4, 2027. A drop in refining margins while oil trading stays quieter would pull quarterly profit back toward pre-conflict levels.

ARC Closes and LNG Canada Phase 2 Gets Approved

The energy group completed two major gas milestones in September to rebuild its production base for the late 2020s and 2030s. On September 2, it closed the buyout of Canadian gas producer ARC Resources for $14.0 billion in cash and shares. "The transaction adds approximately 370 kboe/d immediately across liquids and gas" (thousand barrels of oil equivalent per day), the company said, lifting Integrated Gas output by 22% from the second quarter.

"In September 2026, Shell took a final investment decision on LNG Canada Phase 2," the company also announced, hitting its year-end target a quarter early. The expansion doubles the export plant's capacity to 28 million tonnes per year and gives the British major nearly 6 million tonnes of extra liquefied natural gas per year in the early 2030s. Disposals helped pay the cash bill: the company collected $2.7 billion in third-quarter asset sales, led by Jiffy Lube and the Na Kika platform.

What to watch: the 2026 proved reserves figure in the annual report on March 11, 2027. After proved reserves shrank 15.6% in 2025, the addition of ARC and LNG Canada Phase 2 must show whether the company is growing its resource base or only replacing pumped barrels.

๐ŸŸข new CAPITAL ALLOCATION

Buyback Jumps to $5 Billion, Offsetting ARC Shares

After holding new share repurchases at $3.0 billion in the first two quarters of 2026, the oil major stepped up its capital return. "Today, Shell announces a share buyback programme of $5.0 billion which is expected to be completed by the fourth quarter 2026 results announcement," the company wrote. It also finished the $4.2 billion repurchase plan announced last quarter.

The bigger buyback helps mop up the shares printed to buy ARC Resources. The company issued 228 million new shares worth $10.6 billion for the Canadian deal, which outnumbered the 217 million shares it bought back across the first nine months of 2026. As a result, the total share count ended September slightly higher than where it started the year.

What to watch: the first-quarter 2027 buyback announcement on February 4, 2027. It will show whether $5.0 billion is a new quarterly pace or a one-off catch-up to retire the shares issued for ARC.

๐Ÿ”ด๐Ÿ”ด persistent MACRO

Middle East Conflict Keeps Underlying Output Down 10%

While the Middle East conflict boosts fuel and gas prices, it continues to choke the company's physical volumes and inflate shipping costs. Integrated Gas production over the first nine months fell 17% from a year ago because Qatari gas and Pearl gas-to-liquids volumes remain offline. In Marketing, lubricant volumes also fell because the conflict disrupted supply and demand.

The ARC Resources buyout masks that volume loss in the fourth-quarter outlook. Management plans for 1,080 to 1,180 thousand barrels of oil equivalent per day in Integrated Gas next quarter. Stripping out ARC's 370 thousand barrels per day leaves about 760 thousand by our math, down 20% from a year ago. Conflict-driven charter rates also forced a $5.4 billion non-cash accounting increase to shipping lease debt in the third quarter, bringing the nine-month lease spike to $7.7 billion.

What to watch: Qatari volume assumptions in the first-quarter 2027 outlook on February 4, 2027. Management previously aimed to finish Pearl Train 2 repairs by the end of that quarter, so a continued outage would prolong the volume drag into 2027.

Green Write-Downs Hit $2.8 Billion as Shell Retreats

Low-carbon investments triggered another round of write-downs this quarter. In Marketing, the company booked a $2.12 billion pre-tax ($1.90 billion post-tax) impairment on a European biogas asset, triggered by a "reassessment of management expectations regarding the pace of market development and associated value realisation". Across the first nine months of 2026, it also wrote down $712 million post-tax on renewable power assets in Asia and Europe.

Meanwhile, "Most Renewables and Energy Solutions activities were loss-making for the first nine months 2026, these were more than offset by positive Adjusted Earnings from trading and optimisation," the company said. The group is now selling its Indian renewable unit Sprng Energy for $1.8 billion and offloading its European onshore wind and solar portfolio, while buying full control of 320 US fuel stations and a Pennsylvania gas power plant.

What to watch: capital allocation targets at the Capital Markets Update on February 4, 2027. Further write-downs or a lower budget for the low-carbon unit would confirm that past green spending is failing to earn its cost of capital.

Operating Expenses Rose 5% From Last Quarter

Cost inflation and field charges continued to eat into the company's cost-cutting programme. Operating expenses excluding one-offs rose 4.7% from the second quarter to $8.84 billion, driven by a 14.4% jump in production and manufacturing expenses to $6.26 billion. In Integrated Gas alone, operating expenses rose $180 million from last quarter.

Upstream profit excluding one-offs fell 8.5% from the second quarter to $3.19 billion, hurt by $475 million in exploration well write-offs across the group (up $309 million in Upstream) and $246 million in unfavorable tax moves. Corporate net expense excluding one-offs also reached $705 million, missing the company's $500 million to $700 million forecast range.

What to watch: the annual structural cost reduction figure on February 4, 2027. If underlying operating costs keep climbing alongside reported savings, supply-chain inflation and new assets are absorbing the efficiency gains.

Risks this quarter didn't answer

Because the interim financial report does not include executive call remarks, four standing watch items got no update in the release.

  • Pearl GTL Train 2 repairs: no update on whether repairs remain on track for the end of the first quarter of 2027.
  • Namibia exploration: no mention of the two expedited appraisal wells planned for the end of 2026.
  • Raizen joint venture: no disclosure on the court restructuring plan or the potential $685 million capital injection in Brazil.
  • Structural cost savings tally: updated every six months, so the next cumulative reading arrives with fourth-quarter results.

โ“ Key Questions

How much did ARC Resources contribute to third-quarter earnings?

ARC closed on September 2 and lifted Integrated Gas volumes by 22%, but the report does not break out its standalone profit or cash flow. Investors need the clean split to judge underlying Integrated Gas performance.

After the $2.1 billion biogas write-down, is more green capital at risk?

Shell has written down $2.8 billion across European biogas and renewable power this year while selling its Indian and European solar and wind units. Management has still not said what share of its remaining low-carbon capital earns its target return.

Is the $5 billion buyback a new baseline or an ARC share Mop-up?

Issuing 228 million shares for ARC exceeded the 217 million shares repurchased over the first nine months of 2026. The next call should clarify whether repurchases drop back to $3.0 billion once the ARC dilution is offset.

Are Pearl GTL Train 2 repairs still on track for early 2027?

The interim report notes ongoing Qatari volume losses and $5.4 billion in conflict-related shipping lease additions, but gives no repair timeline update for the damaged Pearl gas-to-liquids plant.
