Recursion (RXRX) Q3 2026 earnings review

Recursion's drug trials show promise, while stock sales fund operations

Recursion delivered encouraging patient data in two drug trials while selling new stock to fund its operations into 2029. The AI drug developer reported polyp reductions from its rare-disease pill REC-4881 and partial tumor shrinkage in three cancer patients taking REC-1245. Chief executive Najat Khan also landed a $10 million milestone from partner Sanofi and set a 2027 cash operating spend ceiling below $360 million.

At a glance
Revenue$18.6M +258% from a year ago (Sanofi $10M milestone)
Cash operating expense, excluding one-offs (Q3)$80.5M by our math, vs $105.9M in Q2
Pro forma cash and restricted cash$748.7M includes $187.2M October stock offering
2027 cash operating expense outlook<$360M down from <$375M ceiling for 2026

⚖️ Verdict: 🟢 Bullish

The story got better because the clinical pipeline and the partner business both produced concrete results in the same quarter. Furthermore, the October stock sale and third-quarter financing raised $270 million by our math, pushing financing risk out to 2029. One caution: that longer cash runway came at the cost of heavy shareholder dilution, and underlying research spending barely moved once last year's one-off drug purchase is removed.

The question now is whether Recursion can turn REC-4881's small 15-patient trial into an FDA-approved registration study without blowing through its $360 million annual spending cap. One view is that the durable polyp reductions support a fast, affordable trial; the other is that regulators will demand a larger study for a chronic preventive medicine. The FDA update promised before the end of 2026 will tell.

🐂 Bull Case

🟢🟢 strengthening PRODUCT

Two Drug Trials Showed Early Patient Responses

Recursion uses artificial intelligence models to find disease targets and design drugs. Chief executive Najat Khan said "The new TUPELO data are important clinical evidence, with REC-4881 showing deep polyp burden reductions across the upper and lower GI tract". REC-4881 is an oral drug for familial adenomatous polyposis (FAP), an inherited condition that causes precancerous digestive tract growths and has no approved drug treatments.

  • REC-4881 overall activity: 13 of 15 evaluable patients had smaller total polyp burden after 12 weeks, with a 47% median drop
  • REC-4881 off-drug durability: 11 of 13 patients stayed below their starting polyp burden 12 weeks after stopping the pill
  • REC-4881 large polyps: 6 of 8 patients with high-risk polyps larger than 5 millimeters saw counts fall
  • REC-1245 cancer trial: 3 of 12 patients taking 45 milligrams or more had partial tumor shrinkage, and 11 of 12 had their cancer stop growing at 8 weeks

The company also shared early human results for REC-1245, an oral drug that breaks down a protein called RBM39 in solid tumors, which Khan called "an encouraging early example of that engine coming together within a single program". These two readouts matter because Recursion had mostly shown computer-generated targets rather than patient responses. The Biotech group selected the 45-milligram daily dose of REC-1245 to test in more endometrial cancer patients after seeing no severe drug-related side effects at that level.

What to watch: the FDA update on REC-4881's final-stage trial design later in 2026. Clear agreement on the trial rules and patient group would let Recursion start the pivotal study in the second half of 2027.

🟢 strengthening CASH

Cost Cuts Lowered Quarterly Cash Spend

Recursion has been cutting overlapping staff and laboratory expenses after buying rival drug designer Exscientia in late 2024. Net cash used in operating activities fell 34.0% from a year ago to $77.4 million in the third quarter. By our math, cash operating expense — a company measure of operational cash burn that leaves out partner cash receipts and merger bills — dropped to $80.5 million, down from $105.9 million in the second quarter.

That third-quarter burn was $11.5 million below the $92.0 million quarterly average implied by the full-year outlook, by our math. Management kept its 2026 cash operating expense ceiling below $375 million and issued a new 2027 ceiling below $360 million, which helps preserve cash while clinical trials expand.

What to watch: fourth-quarter cash operating expense against the $103.5 million remaining under the 2026 ceiling by our math. Staying near the third-quarter level of $80.5 million would show the cost structure is already below the 2027 plan.

🟢 fading GROWTH

Sanofi Option Revived Partner Milestone Revenue

Without approved medicines on the market, the Salt Lake City company relies on research payments from large pharmaceutical partners for revenue. In the first half of 2026, partner milestone receipts had slowed to a single $4.0 million payment. In the third quarter, French drugmaker Sanofi exercised an option to take over development of an oral immunology drug candidate, triggering a $10.0 million milestone that lifted quarterly revenue 258.5% from a year ago to $18.6 million.

Sanofi will now pay for and run the clinical trials, starting with a Phase 1 study expected in 2027, while Recursion can earn over $300 million in future milestones. Biotech partner Genentech also selected its first neuroscience disease target from Recursion's cell maps. Even so, only $3.0 million of partnership cash actually arrived during the third quarter by our math, because the Sanofi option occurred in October.

What to watch: additional Sanofi development candidate options over the next 12 months. Another option exercise would prove the collaboration can generate regular annual cash rather than isolated payments.

🐻 Bear Case

🔴🔴 persistent CAPITAL ALLOCATION contradicts narrative

Share Sales Paid for the Longer Cash Runway

Recursion highlighted that its cash runway now stretches into 2029, a full year longer than the early-2028 target it gave three months ago. The drug developer framed this alongside lower operating expenses and partner progress, but selling new stock did the heavy lifting. The company raised $83.1 million from financing activities during the third quarter and another $187.2 million in net proceeds from an underwritten stock offering in October.

Together, those two stock sales brought in $270.3 million by our math, which covers about three quarters of cash burn at current spending rates. Issuing those shares pushed the third-quarter weighted-average share count up 21.5% from a year ago to 543.0 million, before counting the October offering. Existing shareholders now own a smaller slice of any future drug profits.

What to watch: diluted share count in the fourth-quarter report, which will include the October stock offering. Further share sales under the shelf facility while pro forma cash sits at $748.7 million would mean management expects burn to stay high.

🔴 persistent MARGIN

Research Spending Held Flat After One-Offs

Total operating expenses fell 20.1% from a year ago to $141.7 million, narrowing the third-quarter net loss by 26.6% to $119.0 million. Reported research and development (R&D) spending — the cost of running laboratories, computer models and clinical trials — dropped 18.1% from a year ago to $99.1 million.

However, the company said last year's third quarter included $22.8 million of "in-process research and development costs related to the acquisition of full rights to REC-102". Stripping out that one-time purchase of the bone-disease drug rights leaves prior-year R&D at $98.3 million by our math. On that clean basis, R&D spending edged up 0.9% from a year ago and rose 10.6% from the second quarter's $89.6 million as patient trials expanded.

What to watch: fourth-quarter R&D expense and any disclosure of data-licensing payments to Tempus. A jump in R&D would confirm that clinical trial and data bills are offsetting laboratory staff cuts.

🔴 persistent DISCLOSURE

FDA Trial Rules and Contract Balances Lag

Several standing risks around regulatory timelines, deferred contract balances and partner cash collection remain unresolved after the third-quarter release.

  • REC-4881 trial design: The company said "The Company anticipates initiating a registrational trial in the second half of 2027, pending ongoing FDA discussions, and will provide additional details later this year", so the exact endpoint and patient rules remain unset.
  • Genentech option fee: Management highlighted that Genentech selected its first neuroscience target, but disclosed no dollar payment for the move; total receipts from Roche and Genentech stayed at $216 million, unchanged from the second quarter.
  • Partner cash inflows: Only $7.0 million of partner cash arrived in the first nine months of 2026 ($3.0 million in the third quarter by our math), far below the $37.0 million collected in 2025.
  • Open-source AI competition: The release gave no new data on how proprietary biological maps hold their value against cheaper public AI models.

What to watch: the FDA regulatory update for REC-4881 promised before year-end 2026. If the agency requires a multi-year study or a control arm in both digestive tract regions, trial costs and timelines will rise.

new GOVERNANCE

Pipeline Focus and New Board Chair

Recursion appointed former Schering-Plough chief executive Fred Hassan as Chair of the Board on October 31, 2026, citing his "turning prioritized projects into innovative medicines". In October, the company also decided to focus its own money on five drug programs — REC-4881, REC-1245, REC-4539, REC-7735 and REC-102 — while it plans to "pursue partnership opportunities to advance REC-617 (CDK7) and REC-3565 (MALT1)".

💲 Other KPIs

General and administrative expense (26Q3) $32.6 million
⇘ decelerating

Overhead spending fell 21.8% from a year ago and 21.6% from the second quarter. Recursion said the drop came from a "decrease in infrastructure technology expenses and professional service costs". Overhead has stepped down in three of the last four quarters as post-merger systems were combined.

Pro forma cash and restricted cash (26Q3) $748.7 million
⇗ accelerating

Cash, cash equivalents and restricted cash ended September at $561.5 million, up slightly from $556.8 million in June because $83.1 million of third-quarter financing inflows offset the $77.4 million operating cash outflow. Adding $187.2 million of net proceeds from the October stock offering brings the pro forma balance to $748.7 million.

Unearned collaboration revenue (26Q3) $135.8 million
⇘ decelerating

Unearned revenue — upfront cash from partners that Recursion has collected but not yet earned as revenue through research work — fell 3.3% from the second quarter ($140.4 million) and 14.3% from a year ago ($158.6 million), by our math. The balance keeps shrinking because ongoing research draws it down without new upfront deals.

🔮 Guidance

FY26 Cash Operating Expense, excluding one-offs <$375 million
🠆 unchanged from <$375 million
⇘ decelerating

Unchanged. The plan keeps operational cash burn, excluding partner cash receipts and merger costs, below $375 million for 2026, after management lowered the ceiling from $390 million last quarter. With $271.5 million spent in the first nine months, the ceiling leaves up to $103.5 million for the fourth quarter by our math, above the third quarter's $80.5 million pace.

FY27 Cash Operating Expense, excluding one-offs <$360 million
⇘ decelerating

New. Management set its first operational cash burn ceiling for 2027 at less than $360 million, a 4.0% reduction from the 2026 ceiling by our math. The lower cap reflects the decision to stop funding clinical trials for two cancer drugs (REC-617 and REC-3565) internally and seek outside partners for them instead.

Cash Runway Into 2029
🠅 raised from Into early 2028
⇗ accelerating

Raised. Recursion extended its expected cash exhaustion date by roughly one year, from early 2028 to into 2029. The extension rests on the $187.2 million raised in the October stock offering, the $83.1 million raised in the third quarter, the lower 2027 spending ceiling, and risk-adjusted partner milestone receipts.

❓ Key Questions

What payment came with Genentech's neuroscience target option?

Genentech exercised its first Validated Target Option in the third quarter, but cumulative receipts from Roche and Genentech stayed at $216 million. Investors need to know the fee schedule for target options versus large map milestones.

What will the REC-4881 pivotal trial cost to run?

Recursion plans to start a registrational trial for REC-4881 in the second half of 2027 while keeping total 2027 cash burn under $360 million. Management has not said how many patients the FDA will require or what the study will cost.

How much Tempus data spending remains for 2026 and 2027?

The third-quarter release did not break out non-cash or cash payments to oncology data provider Tempus, which were $3.1 million in the second quarter under a contract requiring $22 million to $42 million annually.

What happens to REC-617 and REC-3565 without a partner?

Recursion previously guided to early Phase 1 data for both cancer programs in the first half of 2027, but now plans to seek partners for them. Management did not say whether ongoing trials are paused or winding down.
