Reddit (RDDT) Q3 2026 earnings review
Reddit's ad revenue jumps 53%, but its search traffic falls
Reddit is squeezing much more ad money from each visitor even as changes in web search cut into its audience. Third-quarter sales jumped 53% and profit per share climbed 75% because automated ad tools lifted revenue per user. Yet chief executive Steve Huffman warned that search referrals fell over 1 million a week in October, which could push total daily users down by a low-double-digit percentage next quarter.
| Revenue | $895M +53% from a year ago |
|---|---|
| US daily active users | 50.7M -2% from a year ago |
| Global daily user warning for Q4 | Down ~10%+ from 130.3M in Q3 |
| Q4 revenue outlook | New middle of the range: 40% growth |
⚖️ Verdict: 🔴 Bearish
The story got worse because external search changes are now shrinking the domestic user base and threatening global user totals. American daily users fell from a year ago and from last quarter despite a 63% jump in marketing spend. On the positive side, the fourth-quarter outlook calls for sales to pass $1 billion at a 49% profit margin excluding one-offs.
The question now is whether forcing casual visitors to log in can offset the drop in search traffic without shrinking the ad pool. Either mandatory logins turn search visitors into higher-paying daily users, or the shrinking funnel caps how many ads the platform can show. Fourth-quarter user counts and the international login tests will tell.
🐂 Bull Case
New Ad Tools Lifted Revenue Per User 36%
“Our business is growing because the Reddit experience captures the human experience in a way that no other platform can replicate,” chief executive Steve Huffman said. Advertisers are paying more to reach that audience, and ad revenue rose 54% from a year ago to $847 million.
The online forum operator opened Reddit Max, its automated ad-buying tool, to all advertisers and added new lead-generation features. Video ad revenue more than doubled from a year ago after the company began testing 15-second video ads.
Average revenue per unique (ARPU), the money Reddit makes per daily visitor, climbed 36% to $6.87 globally and 53% to $13.82 in the United States. Better ad tools let the platform make much more money from each visitor even when total user numbers stood still.
What to watch: the split between ad prices and ad volume in the third-quarter filing. A slowdown in ad volume would show that revenue growth depends on charging higher prices to reach the same pool of users.
International Revenue and Users Outpaced the US
Markets outside the United States now provide most of the platform's visitors and its fastest sales growth. International revenue jumped 67% from a year ago to $176.1 million, while domestic revenue grew 50% to $718.9 million.
International daily active uniques (DAUq), the count of distinct daily visitors outside the United States, rose 24% from a year ago to 79.6 million. Overseas visitors now make up 61% of total daily users, and international revenue per user rose 32% to $2.43.
Because overseas visitors bring in less than a fifth of the revenue of an American user, closing even a small part of that gap lifts total sales. What to watch: international logged-in daily users in the fourth quarter. A drop during the upcoming login tests would slow the company's only growing user base.
Engineering Leverage Pushed Operating Margin Up 5.5 Points
Profit grew much faster than revenue because engineering and overhead costs rose far slower than sales. Operating income nearly doubled to $261.6 million, lifting the operating margin by 5.5 percentage points from a year ago to 29.2%.
Research and development, the cost of paying engineers to build the platform, fell by 4.1 percentage points of revenue to 29.4%. General and administrative expenses, which cover corporate overhead, dropped by 2.3 percentage points of revenue to 9.5%. Meanwhile, the revenue beat narrowed to 3.5% above the middle of the range, down from an 11.2% average over the prior six quarters.
What to watch: total costs excluding one-offs in the fourth quarter, implied at $520 million by the outlook. Spending above that mark would mean user marketing is eating into engineering savings.
🐻 Bear Case
Search Referrals Are Dropping Over One Million Weekly
Changes in web search are cutting into the flow of casual visitors who land on Reddit from external search engines. “Our search referral traffic was down meaningfully in Q3, with the decline accelerating later in the quarter,” chief executive Steve Huffman wrote.
Huffman argued that “search referral trends don’t determine our relevancy and they don’t define our future.” Yet he warned that after losing over 1 million weekly referrals in October, “total DAUqs could fall in Q4, by a low-double-digit percentage from our current base of 130 million DAUqs.”
- Global daily users added from last quarter: zero, down from 5.6 million added a year ago by our math
- Logged-out daily users: 76.8 million, or 59% of all daily visitors
- Fourth-quarter global daily users implied by October trends: about 116 million, down 4.5% from a year ago by our math
This matters because Huffman also noted that search referrals help bring logged-in and mobile app users back to the platform. What to watch: fourth-quarter global daily users. A drop below 121.4 million would mark the company's first annual user decline.
US Daily Users Shrank While Marketing Spend Rose
Domestic visitors generate 80% of company revenue, and their numbers are now shrinking. American daily active uniques (DAUq) fell 2% from a year ago and 4.7% from last quarter to 50.7 million, while weekly American visitors stayed flat from a year ago at 188.5 million.
To fight the drop in search traffic, the company leaned on “driving reach primarily through user marketing,” Huffman wrote. Sales and marketing expenses rose 63% from a year ago to $209.4 million, climbing 1.4 percentage points of revenue to 23.4%. By our math, that pushed total adjusted costs $17.7 million above what the third-quarter outlook implied.
Even with higher marketing spend, domestic logged-out daily users fell by 2.8 million from last quarter, while logged-in users rose by 0.3 million. What to watch: domestic daily users in the fourth quarter. Another sequential drop would show that paid marketing cannot replace lost search traffic.
Risks this quarter didn't answer
Four standing risks from prior quarters cannot be tested from the earnings release or shareholder letter alone because their disclosures live in the quarterly filing or conference call.
- Ad price versus ad volume: not quantified in the release; the quarterly filing will show whether ad impressions slowed below last quarter's 17% growth.
- Active advertiser growth: not in the release; the conference call will show whether advertiser count held near last quarter's 70% growth.
- Data-licensing contract backlog: Other revenue grew 35% to $48 million, but the filing's footnote is needed to see if 2027 contracted revenue rose above $30.1 million.
- Search litigation and UK privacy fine: the filing's legal footnote will show any procedural updates on the Google search lawsuits and the 14.5 million pound penalty.

Reddit Will Test Mandatory Logins Outside the US
Chief executive Steve Huffman announced a plan for “shifting Reddit to a logged-in-only experience,” with full tests starting in select international markets in the fourth quarter. Management wants more data for ad targeting and tighter protection of its text archive from outside scrapers. Notably, the company still published its logged-in and logged-out user table this quarter despite saying previously that it would retire the breakdown.
💲 Other KPIs
Cash generated after capital spending nearly doubled from a year ago, rising 98% to $362.6 million, or 40.5% of revenue. Because the platform rents its servers from cloud providers, capital spending was $1.2 million, and total cash and marketable securities reached $3.03 billion.
Total fully diluted shares, which include employee stock awards, edged down 0.3% from last quarter. Reddit spent $100.4 million to buy back 670,000 shares at an average price of $149.81, offsetting new employee stock grants.
Money owed by advertisers rose 49.7% from a year ago and 12.3% from last quarter. That matches the 53.0% annual and 11.2% quarterly rise in revenue, showing that the social platform is collecting cash from ad buyers on schedule.
🔮 Guidance
New. The plan calls for revenue to cross $1 billion, growing about 40% from a year ago at the middle of the range, down from 53% this quarter. It laps last year's 70% fourth-quarter growth. Reddit has beaten its revenue midpoint for seven straight quarters by an average of 10.1%; if the pattern holds, fourth-quarter revenue would reach $1,117 million by our math.
New. The outlook puts profit before interest, taxes, depreciation and stock compensation up 51% from a year ago at the middle of the range. By our math, that lifts the Adjusted EBITDA margin to 48.8% from 44.9% in the third quarter, leaving $520 million of adjusted costs.
❓ Key Questions
What was the split between ad prices and ad impressions?
Advertising revenue rose 54%, but the release did not give the breakdown between price increases and ad volume. With American daily users down 2%, investors need to know if ad volume slowed from last quarter's 17% pace.
How fast did the active advertiser count grow?
Management previously reported that active advertisers grew over 70% from a year ago in the second quarter. Because the third-quarter revenue beat narrowed to 3.5% from an 11.2% average, the advertiser count will show if new buyer demand is cooling.
Have any data-licensing contracts been renewed for 2027?
Other revenue grew 35% to $48 million, but at mid-year only $30.1 million of contracted revenue was scheduled for all of 2027. Management has not yet shared when major artificial-intelligence training deals come up for renewal.
How much user drop-off do mandatory login tests cause?
Logged-out visitors make up 59% of global daily users. As Reddit tests a logged-in-only requirement overseas in the fourth quarter, the conversion rate will show how many casual visitors leave rather than create an account.
