Nextpower (NXT) Q2 2027 earnings review

Nextpower's new products lift sales, but profit margins narrow

Nextpower, a maker of solar-panel sun trackers and power-plant gear, grew fast through new product lines while its profit margins narrowed. Revenue rose 23% from a year ago as battery storage, wiring and foundations reached 22% of sales, and chief executive Dan Shugar reported a record backlog above $6 billion. Even with the raised full-year outlook, the plan points to sales growth slowing to 10% in the third quarter and second-half profit margins dropping by our math.

At a glance
Revenue$1,109M +22.5% from a year ago
Products outside solar trackers22% of sales 14% last quarter
GAAP gross margin31.1% 35.9% last quarter
Full-year revenue outlookRaised $75M middle of the range: 21.5% growth

⚖️ Verdict: 🟢 Bullish

The story got better because the expansion beyond solar trackers is showing up in signed orders and shipments, while finance chief Chuck Boynton finally put $162 million into share buybacks. First shipments of power inverters arrived ahead of the early-2027 schedule, and connectors passed 2 gigawatts in backlog. One caution: gross margin fell almost 5 percentage points from last quarter as newly bought storage and higher research spending diluted profitability.

The question now is how much of the non-tracker jump and second-half margin drop comes from bolting on lower-margin acquisitions versus organic demand. Either cross-selling is lifting the whole platform, or bought revenue is masking slower tracker growth and heavier start-up costs. The acquisition footnote in the 10-Q and the November 16 investor day will settle it.

🐂 Bull Case

🟢🟢 strengthening PRODUCT

Products Beyond Trackers Reached 22% of Sales

Nextpower makes motorized steel frames, called solar trackers, that tilt solar panels toward the sun, and it is adding other power-plant gear around them. Founder and chief executive Dan Shugar pointed to "energy storage and other complementary offerings accounting for approximately 22% of our Q2 revenue", up from 14% in the first quarter. By our math, sales outside trackers nearly doubled from last quarter to about $244 million.

  • Electrical balance of systems (eBOS, the wiring and connectors that link solar panels): record quarterly bookings above $100 million
  • NX PowerMerge (a patented trunk connector within eBOS): "now in commercial deployment at scale, with more than 2 GW in backlog", up from 850 megawatts last quarter
  • Power inverters (devices that convert solar direct current into grid alternating current): 1.1-gigawatt supply deal signed across five projects, and first systems shipped

Shipping the first NX Power Conversion systems in the second quarter beat the solar gear maker's earlier target of early calendar 2027. Part of the jump to 22% of sales came from adding Prevalon, the battery storage business bought in July, rather than from older product lines alone. Even so, the 2-gigawatt connector backlog and the 1.1-gigawatt inverter deal show customers are buying the new US-patented products alongside trackers.

What to watch: the acquisition footnote in the second-quarter 10-Q filing. It will show how much of the $204 million revenue gain came from newly bought Prevalon and Zimmermann versus products Nextpower owned a year ago.

concern eased CAPITAL ALLOCATION

Nextpower Spent $162 Million on Buybacks

The board approved a $500 million share buyback programme two quarters ago, yet the California group spent almost nothing on its own shares through the first quarter. In the second quarter, finance chief Chuck Boynton bought back $162 million of stock while paying for acquisitions and keeping over $1 billion in cash with zero debt.

That purchase used nearly a third of the three-year allowance in three months and trimmed the diluted share count from 155.1 million in the first quarter to 153.9 million. Because the cash came out of operations and existing balances without borrowing, the company answered the complaint that its buyback plan was idle.

What to watch: full-year diluted share count assumptions at the November 16 Capital Markets Day. A reduction from the prior 158 million share assumption would confirm that the second-quarter buybacks permanently lowered the share base.

🟢 strengthening GROWTH

Backlog Topped $6 Billion on Record Bookings

Backlog — signed customer orders with cash deposits — rose past $6 billion from $5.5 billion in the first quarter, and total bookings hit a quarterly record. Nextpower also closed its €230 million cash purchase of Zimmermann PV-Steel Group, a European maker of fixed-tilt solar racks and foundations that adds 15 countries to its map.

When Nextpower reported $5.5 billion of backlog last quarter, it held more than $300 million of Prevalon battery storage orders outside that figure. Even after stripping that $300 million at-close addition out of the comparison by our math, backlog rose by at least $200 million in a quarter when the business shipped a record $1.11 billion of gear.

What to watch: any standalone backlog figure for Zimmermann in the quarterly filing or at the November investor day. Separating acquired European orders from core bookings will show the underlying order pace.

🐻 Bear Case

🔴🔴 strengthening MARGIN contradicts narrative

New Products and Research Cut Into Margins

Shugar said customer adoption of the integrated platform is helping customers optimize long-term operation, and Boynton highlighted record profit before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization (EBITDA), excluding one-offs, of $250 million. Yet adding battery storage, steel structures and inverter ramp costs diluted profitability, and the raised full-year outlook points to lower margins in the second half.

  • Cost of sales (the cost of making and shipping the equipment): 68.9% of revenue, up 1.2 percentage points from a year ago and 4.8 points from Q1
  • Research and development (engineering spend on new products): 4.1% of revenue, up 1.1 percentage points from a year ago as spending rose 69% to $45.6 million
  • Selling, general and administrative expenses (overhead and sales pay): 8.3% of revenue, down 1.0 percentage point from a year ago
  • Second-half adjusted EBITDA margin: 19.0% implied by the full-year outlook by our math, down from 23.6% in the first half

Because the newly bought storage and structural lines carry lower margins than mature solar trackers and research spending nearly doubled over two years, revenue up 22.5% from a year ago produced only 11.7% growth in adjusted EBITDA. By our math, the full-year plan leaves adjusted EBITDA margin around 18.1% in the third quarter and 19.6% in the fourth.

What to watch: gross margin excluding one-offs in the third quarter. A drop below 30% would show that battery storage, Zimmermann steel structures and inverter start-up costs weigh on profitability more than the low-30s annual target allowed.

🔴 persistent GROWTH

The Full-Year Plan Needs a Huge Fourth Quarter

Nextpower raised its full-year revenue outlook by $75 million at the middle of the range to $4.20–4.45 billion, and it told investors to expect third-quarter revenue to grow about 10% from a year ago. With Zimmermann now closed and inside the company, that third-quarter figure works out to roughly $1.00 billion by our math, down 10% from the second quarter.

To hit the middle of the full-year range after a $1.00 billion third quarter, fourth-quarter revenue must reach about $1.28 billion by our math, or 45% growth from a year ago. That leaves the annual target dependent on shipping $280 million more gear in the final three months of the year than in the third quarter.

What to watch: third-quarter revenue and any revision to the full-year range next quarter. A third-quarter result near $1.00 billion without a big fourth-quarter ramp would put the $4.325 billion middle of the range at risk.

🔴 persistent DISCLOSURE

Risks this quarter didn't answer

Five standing concerns around government manufacturing credits, international sales, acquired revenue mix, tax liabilities and customer concentration either remained high or awaited the full quarterly filing.

  • US Section 45X manufacturing tax credits (federal subsidies for making solar parts in the US, net of tariffs): $99 million in Q2, or 8.9% of revenue; without them, gross margin was 22.2% by our math, so any policy change hits profit directly.
  • Sales outside the US: fell 40% from a year ago in Q1; the press release omits geographic tables, so the Q2 10-Q filing will show whether international shipments stabilized.
  • Underlying vs acquired sales in non-tracker products: the 22% share bundles newly bought Prevalon storage with older lines; the 10-Q acquisition note will show what was bought versus grown.
  • Tax receivable agreement (TRA, a contract paying 85% of certain tax savings to former owners) and Flex tax dispute: $19.4 million paid in the first half with $373.8 million still owed on the balance sheet; the 10-Q legal note will update the September 23 court argument.
  • Customer concentration: one buyer accounted for 16% of revenue in Q1; the 10-Q concentration footnote will show whether reliance on that buyer grew.

🔮 Guidance

FY27 Revenue $4.20–4.45 billion
🠅 raised from $4.10–4.40 billion
⇒ stable

Raised. The middle of the range moved up $75 million to $4.325 billion, or 21.5% growth for the year. That is the third raise for fiscal 2027, though smaller than the earlier $250 million and $300 million steps as Zimmermann closed. With the third quarter planned at 10% growth, the outlook leaves about $1.28 billion, or 45.4% growth, for the fourth quarter by our math.

Q3 Revenue ~10% YoY growth (~$1.00 billion)
🠇 cut from Modest sequential quarterly increases
⇘ decelerating

Cut against the earlier plan for sequential rises every quarter. A 10% increase from last year's $909.4 million third quarter puts revenue near $1.00 billion by our math, down about 10% from the second quarter's $1.11 billion.

FY27 Adjusted EBITDA $890–940 million
🠅 raised from $870–930 million
⇘ decelerating

Raised. The middle of the range rose $15 million to $915 million, or 7.2% growth for the year. After $482.3 million in the first half, the plan leaves $432.7 million for the second half by our math — an 19.0% margin on implied second-half sales, down from 23.6% in the first half as inverter start-up costs and newly acquired businesses weigh on margins.

Q3 Adjusted EBITDA margin 1 to 2 percentage points below Q4 FY27
⇘ decelerating

New. Nextpower expects third-quarter EBITDA margin excluding one-offs to sit "roughly 1 to 2 percentage points below Q4 FY27". Combining that gap with the 19.0% second-half margin implied by the full-year outlook puts the third quarter near 18.1% and the fourth quarter near 19.6% by our math, down from 22.5% in the second quarter.

FY27 Adjusted Diluted EPS $4.61–4.87
🠅 raised from $4.42–4.73
⇘ decelerating

Raised. The middle of the range climbed $0.165 to $4.74 per share, up 5.3% from fiscal 2026's $4.50, helped by the second quarter's $162 million share buyback. Having earned $2.51 in the first half, the solar gear maker needs $2.23 in the second half to reach the middle of the range by our math.

FY27 GAAP Net Income $559–598 million
🠅 raised from $540–573 million
⇘ decelerating

Raised. The middle of the range rose $22 million to $578.5 million, which is 1.3% below fiscal 2026's $585.9 million because of acquisition amortization and higher tax rates. After $330.8 million in the first half, the plan leaves $247.7 million for the second half by our math.

FY27 GAAP Diluted EPS $3.62–3.87
🠅 raised from $3.42–3.64
⇘ decelerating

Raised. The middle of the range moved up $0.215 to $3.745 per share, down 2.5% from $3.84 in fiscal 2026. The outlook excludes about $0.99 per share of stock-based pay, intangible amortization and deal costs, and leaves $1.605 per share for the second half by our math.

❓ Key Questions

How much of the 22% non-tracker share was acquired?

Energy storage and other non-tracker products jumped from 14% of revenue in Q1 to 22% in Q2 right as the Prevalon battery acquisition closed. Investors need the dollar split between newly bought Prevalon and older lines like eBOS and foundations.

Why does the outlook imply 19% second-half EBITDA margins?

The full-year outlook leaves $433 million of adjusted EBITDA on $2.28 billion of second-half sales by our math — a 19.0% margin versus 23.6% in the first half. How much of that 4.6-point drop comes from Zimmermann, Prevalon and inverter ramp costs?

How much did Zimmermann add to the FY27 outlook?

Last quarter Nextpower said Zimmermann would run at €300 million of annual sales and €45 million of EBITDA after closing. Now that the deal has closed, how many months and dollars of Zimmermann results sit inside the $75 million revenue raise?

Did international revenue stop falling in the second quarter?

Sales outside the US fell 40% from a year ago in the first quarter, and the earnings release does not include geographic tables. What was Rest-of-World revenue in Q2, and what is the underlying trend excluding Europe's Zimmermann addition?
