Nacco Industries (NC) Q3 2026 earnings review

Nacco lifts its profit outlook, but solar exit costs continue

Nacco Industries, a coal, aggregates and minerals producer, grew operating profit rapidly even as solar exit bills weighed on results. Revenue rose 5% to $80 million, while operating profit jumped 37% to $9 million on new Florida mining work. Chief executive J.C. Butler raised the full-year profit outlook back to last year's level, though by our math the plan leaves fourth-quarter operating profit falling nearly in half.

At a glance
Revenue$80.5M +5.1% from a year ago
Adjusted Ebitda$20.4M +62.6% from a year ago
Contract Mining operating profit$4.9M +155% from a year ago
Full-year operating profit outlookRaised now matches 2025, up from a steep drop

⚖️ Verdict: 🟢 Bullish

The story got better because core mining earnings absorbed $15 million of year-to-date solar charges and restored the full-year profit plan. Contract Mining also started its new decade-long Arizona quarry contract on time in October, while cash rose and net debt fell. One caution: a $4.5 million liability settlement gain inflated Adjusted Ebitda, and solar curtailment bills will continue into the fourth quarter and beyond.

The question now is whether Nacco's new mining contracts can outrun declining oil and gas royalties and customer reliability issues at its Mississippi coal mine. Bulls see stacked multi-year quarry and lithium contracts driving 2027 growth, while skeptics point to open-ended solar exit costs and overdue coal receivables. Fourth-quarter solar charges and the annual filing's receivable disclosures will settle it.

🐂 Bull Case

🟢🟢 strengthening GROWTH

New Florida Contract Lifted Mining Profit

Contract Mining, which digs limestone and other minerals for customers, is Nacco's main growth business. Third-quarter operating profit more than doubled because of the "continued ramp up of the new dragline services contract in Palm Beach County, Florida" for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. In early October, the unit also "commenced operations at a new limestone quarry in Arizona under a contract mining agreement that spans over a decade".

  • Revenue excluding pass-through costs: $22.2 million, up 75% from a year ago
  • Tons delivered: 14.3 million, down 0.7% from a year ago
  • Realized revenue per ton (excluding pass-through costs): $1.55, up from $0.88 a year ago by our math
  • Segment operating profit: $4.9 million, up 155% from $1.9 million

This matters because the segment earned far more money without digging more tons. Higher-margin service work in Florida replaced lower volume at legacy limestone quarries, lifting the revenue Nacco keeps per ton by 76% by our math. With the Arizona quarry now running, management expects substantial profit growth again in the fourth quarter and in 2027.

What to watch: fourth-quarter revenue excluding pass-through costs once the Arizona quarry contributes a full quarter. A further rise in revenue per ton would show the new contracts carry permanently higher margins than older quarry work.

🟢 strengthening MARGIN

Full-Year Operating Profit Plan Restored

Last quarter, a $12.0 million solar write-down forced Nacco to lower its full-year operating profit outlook to a significant decline. Chief executive J.C. Butler said this quarter's results "demonstrate the momentum we are building across the organization, even as we incur costs associated with the curtailment of certain solar development activities". Third-quarter operating profit rose 37% to $9.3 million, restoring the full-year outlook to match 2025.

Lower production and overhead costs drove the recovery. Cost of sales — the direct cost of mining coal and limestone — fell 1.6 percentage points of revenue to 85.4%, lifting gross margin to 14.6%. Selling, general and administrative overhead dropped 1.9 percentage points of revenue to 23.6%. Those savings absorbed $3.4 million of solar curtailment costs (4.2% of revenue) and lifted operating margin by 2.7 percentage points to 11.5%.

What to watch: fourth-quarter consolidated operating profit against the $4.0 million implied by the full-year plan. Hitting that level while absorbing additional solar exit bills would confirm the core segments can carry the company's overhead on their own.

🟢 strengthening CAPITAL ALLOCATION

Net Debt Fell as Capital Spending Slowed

After debt climbed in the first half of the year, Nacco prioritized cash preservation and tighter scrutiny on new projects. In the third quarter, cash on hand rose by $11.0 million from the second quarter to $56.5 million, while total debt increased by $4.7 million to $124.8 million. By our math, that reduced net debt by 8.4% in three months, from $74.6 million to $68.3 million.

Slower capital spending helped rebuild the cash buffer. Nacco now plans to spend up to $32 million over the rest of 2026, down from a $35 million remainder budget three months ago, which implies only about $3 million was spent in the third quarter by our math. For 2027, management budgeted up to $56 million, well below the $89 million initial plan set for 2026.

What to watch: full-year cash flow before financing when annual results arrive. Management still projects a net cash outflow for 2026, and turning that figure positive in 2027 is required to pay down the $124.8 million debt pile.

🐻 Bear Case

🔴🔴 persistent DISCLOSURE contradicts narrative

Solar Exit and One-Offs Distort Ebitda

Nacco highlights Consolidated Adjusted EBITDA — earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and certain one-offs — as its primary performance measure, which jumped 63% from a year ago to $20.4 million. Beneath that headline, the company recorded $3.4 million of solar curtailment costs in the third quarter and warned it will incur additional solar costs in the fourth quarter and possibly in future years.

The non-GAAP definition cuts against the headline framing because it includes a $4.5 million one-time gain from settling an excess funding liability inside Other income, while leaving the $3.4 million solar curtailment expense inside operating profit. Stripping out the $4.5 million settlement gain reduces Adjusted EBITDA to $15.9 million by our math; swapping out both one-offs leaves $19.3 million. Meanwhile, interest expense doubled from a year ago to $2.2 million.

What to watch: the exact fourth-quarter solar curtailment charge and any project sale terms in the annual filing. Until Nacco transfers or closes these solar projects, open-ended exit costs will continue to drag on reported operating profit.

🔴 persistent PRODUCT

Equity Earnings Masked a Royalty Drop

Minerals and Royalties collects oil and gas royalties from leased acreage and holds an investment in Eiger Resources, an oil and gas producer. Nacco said segment results were comparable to last year, with operating profit down 3.7% to $7.7 million. However, direct segment revenue fell 34.1% from a year ago to $6.1 million because of lower natural gas production and prices.

The segment held its profit steady only because earnings from its unconsolidated Eiger investment nearly quadrupled, rising from $1.1 million to $4.3 million. Royalty revenue carries almost no direct operating cost, whereas working-interest equity earnings are exposed to drilling and operating expenses. Management expects segment operating profit to decline in the fourth quarter and for the full year, and to moderate again in 2027.

What to watch: fourth-quarter royalty revenue excluding Eiger equity earnings. A further drop would show that natural gas volume declines are outpacing the $20 million Nacco spends each year to buy new mineral acres.

Coal Profit Faces Fourth-Quarter Headwinds

Utility Coal Mining operates coal mines for power plants, both through wholly owned Mississippi Lignite Mining Company (MLMC) and through unconsolidated joint ventures. Segment operating profit rose 32.5% to $6.6 million in the third quarter, helped by a "shift in focus to reclamation activities in the first half of 2026 and lower year-over-year inventory impairment charges" alongside higher contract coal prices at MLMC.

That momentum reverses in the fourth quarter. Nacco expects fourth-quarter coal operating profit to fall below last year because of reduced customer demand and higher diesel fuel costs at MLMC, plus "Sabine Mining Company's owner assuming reclamation activities effective October 1, 2026". Furthermore, Nacco noted that 2027 coal profit growth depends on whether MLMC's power-plant customer is able to operate more consistently.

What to watch: tons delivered at consolidated coal operations in the fourth quarter (572 thousand tons in the third quarter, down 6.1%). Another drop would trigger fixed-cost pressure and potential inventory write-downs at MLMC.

🔴 persistent DISCLOSURE

Risks this quarter didn't answer

Three standing issues from prior quarters could not be verified from the third-quarter earnings release alone.

  • Mississippi Lignite customer collections: the second-quarter filing disclosed $12.5 million in customer receivables ($7.2 million past due), and the release gives no collection update ahead of the quarterly filing.
  • Mitigation Resources standalone profit: management now expects the environmental restoration unit to "generate a profit in the 2026 fourth quarter and in 2027" (pulled forward from 2027-only last quarter), but its figures remain buried inside the Unallocated segment.
  • Long-term $150 million EBITDA goal: unmentioned for a third straight quarter after management cut capital spending and exited solar development.

Grid Demand Supports Coal Policy

Nacco pointed to rising electricity demand and federal policy shifts, including the re-establishment of the National Coal Council, as support for baseload coal power plants. While favorable rules help keep customer power plants open over the long run, near-term coal profit still depends on plant mechanical reliability, diesel costs and the October end of Sabine reclamation fees.

🔮 Guidance

FY26 Consolidated Operating Profit Comparable to 2025 ($22.0 million)
🠅 raised from Significantly lower than 2025
⇘ decelerating

Raised. Management now expects full-year operating profit to match last year's $22.0 million despite $15.4 million in solar charges through September, up from a forecast of a significant decline last quarter. By our math, that leaves about $4.0 million for the fourth quarter, down 48% from $7.6 million in the fourth quarter of 2025 depending on solar curtailment timing.

FY26 Net Income and Pre-Tax Income Increase year over year (vs $17.6M net income in 2025)
🠅 raised from Significantly lower than 2025
⇗ accelerating

Raised. Both full-year and fourth-quarter net income are now expected to increase over 2025, reversing last quarter's forecast of a full-year decline. At $18.8 million through nine months, net income has already passed full-year 2025 ($17.6 million), and fourth-quarter comparisons benefit from lapping a $7.8 million pre-tax pension settlement charge.

FY26 Consolidated Adjusted EBITDA Substantial increase year over year (vs $48.9M in 2025)
🠅 raised from Improvement year over year
⇘ decelerating

Raised. The company restored the word substantial to its full-year growth forecast after nine-month Adjusted EBITDA reached $52.7 million, already 8% above the entire prior year ($48.9 million). Fourth-quarter Adjusted EBITDA could still fall below last year's $14.3 million depending on when solar curtailment bills hit.

FY26 Utility Coal Mining Operating Profit Increase over 2025 ($17.2M); Q4 lower YoY
🠆 unchanged from Increase over 2025
⇘ decelerating

Unchanged. Nine-month segment operating profit of $20.3 million already exceeds full-year 2025 ($17.2 million). Fourth-quarter profit will fall from last year's $7.2 million because of lower customer demand and higher diesel costs at Mississippi Lignite, plus the October 1 end of Sabine reclamation work. Profitability is expected to improve again in 2027.

FY26 Contract Mining Operating Profit Substantial growth in Q4 and FY26 (vs $5.8M in 2025)
🠆 unchanged from Substantial growth in H2 and FY26
⇒ stable

Unchanged. Nine-month operating profit of $12.7 million is already more than double full-year 2025 ($5.8 million). Management expects substantial year-over-year growth in the fourth quarter and continued profit growth in 2027 as the Florida dragline project and the new Arizona limestone quarry run for a full year.

FY26 Minerals and Royalties Operating Profit Decline in Q4 and FY26 (vs $29.1M in 2025)
🠆 unchanged from Decline in H2 and FY26
⇘ decelerating

Unchanged. Full-year and fourth-quarter segment profit will fall below 2025 levels ($8.0 million in Q4 2025; $29.1 million in FY25) as weaker royalty income outweighs higher earnings from Eiger Resources. For 2027, operating profit is expected to moderate further from 2026.

Capital Expenditures (Remainder of 2026 and FY27) Up to $32M in Q4 2026; up to $56M in 2027
🠆 unchanged from Up to $35M in H2 2026
⇘ decelerating

Unchanged. The remaining 2026 budget moved from $35 million at mid-year to $32 million after roughly $3 million of third-quarter spending by our math. The new 2027 plan of up to $56 million includes $20 million for minerals acquisitions and $16 million for Sawtooth lithium equipment that the customer will repay over five years.

❓ Key Questions

Did the Mississippi Lignite customer pay its overdue bills?

At the end of June, Nacco was owed $12.5 million by its sole consolidated coal customer, with $7.2 million past due. The release mentions 2027 profit depends on the power plant running consistently, but gives no update on cash collections.

How much more will exiting the solar business cost?

After a $12.0 million write-down in the second quarter and $3.4 million of curtailment costs in the third, management warned of further costs in the fourth quarter and future years. Investors need the remaining balance-sheet exposure and maximum exit bill.

What are Mitigation Resources' standalone revenue and profit?

Management pulled forward its profitability target for the environmental restoration unit to the fourth quarter of 2026 and full-year 2027. Because its results sit inside Unallocated Items alongside corporate overhead and solar losses, outsiders cannot verify the turnaround.

Why did Contract Mining revenue per ton jump 76%?

Revenue excluding pass-through costs rose 75% while tons delivered dipped 0.7%. Management attributed the gain to the Florida dragline ramp, but did not disclose how much came from ongoing service rates versus one-time mobilization milestones.
