MNTN (MNTN) Q3 2026 earnings review

MNTN cuts its annual outlook and replaces its chief executive

MNTN, which sells software for running measurable ads on streaming television, missed its third-quarter sales target and replaced chief executive Mark Douglas with board member Tony Weisman. Revenue rose 15% to $80 million, below the $86–89 million plan, after what finance chief Patrick Pohlen called "unforeseen execution problems in our go-to-market organization". Management cut the full-year outlook, and by our math the new fourth-quarter plan points to a 12% revenue drop during the peak holiday season.

⚖️ Verdict: 🔴🔴 Very Bearish

The story got worse because slowing customer additions and falling spend per advertiser finally broke the company's growth targets and profit margins. Over the past quarter, net new customer additions fell by more than half, and fourth-quarter operating cash profit is now set to drop by two-thirds from a year ago as MNTN rebuilds its sales team. One positive: the business still earned $8 million in net income and holds $252 million in cash with no debt.

The question now is whether the fourth-quarter drop comes from fixable sales-team turnover or stiffer competition from larger ad platforms moving into small-business television. If the cause is internal sales disruption, bookings should recover under the new sales leaders in 2027; if rivals are taking small advertisers, spend per customer will keep falling. Same-quarter customer counts in the upcoming quarterly filing and the 2027 outlook next quarter will tell.

🐂 Bull Case

🟢 persistent CASH

Profit and Cash Rose Before the Reset

MNTN runs a platform that lets brands buy measurable ads on streaming television. Even with slower sales in the third quarter, the business generated more profit and added to its cash balance while carrying no debt.

  • Net income: $7.7 million, up 19% from $6.4 million a year ago
  • Adjusted EBITDA (operating cash profit excluding stock pay and one-offs): $19.9 million, up 24.5% from a year ago
  • Cash and cash equivalents: $252.3 million, up $15.0 million from June with zero borrowings

Sales and marketing costs fell by 0.8 percentage points of revenue to 29.7%, and general overhead dropped 1.4 percentage points to 15.7%. That kept gross margin at 78.8% and lifted the adjusted EBITDA margin by 2.0 percentage points to 24.8%, giving the new chief executive a debt-free balance sheet during the sales reorganization.

What to watch: fourth-quarter cash flow in the annual filing. Holding cash near $250 million while fourth-quarter adjusted EBITDA drops to $8–10 million would confirm the reorganization is not burning the company's reserves.

🟢 persistent PRODUCT

Positives this quarter didn't test

Two product and supply drivers from earlier quarters received no new figures in the third-quarter earnings release.

  • MNTN Express and QuickFrame AI: the self-serve ad tier for smaller businesses and the artificial-intelligence video tool had 7,000 and 73,000 sign-ups by mid-year, and management must still disclose how many converted into paying advertisers.
  • Premium live-sports inventory: earlier agreements added streaming ad slots across major sports leagues, and the conference call or quarterly filing will show whether sports demand helped cushion fourth-quarter bookings.

🐻 Bear Case

🔴🔴 strengthening GROWTH contradicts narrative

Sales Problems Broke Growth and Replaced the CEO

For two quarters, management defended its full-year plan even though that plan required second-half sales growth to speed up to nearly 25%. Instead, third-quarter revenue grew 14.6% to $80.3 million, missing the $86–89 million outlook, and the board replaced chief executive Mark Douglas with board member Tony Weisman.

"Our third quarter revenue increased 15% year-over-year and was impacted by unforeseen execution problems in our go-to-market organization," finance chief Patrick Pohlen said. MNTN hired a new head of inside sales from Salesforce and a head of agency partnerships from Snap to fix the team.

The miss breaks the company's record of four straight beats and forces a reset in the peak holiday quarter. By our math, the new fourth-quarter outlook of $75–78 million means revenue will fall 12.2% from a year ago at the middle of the range, compared with the 24.3% growth the previous annual plan implied.

What to watch: first-quarter 2027 revenue outlook when fourth-quarter results arrive. A return to year-over-year growth would show the sales reorganization was a brief disruption rather than lost market demand.

🔴🔴 strengthening GROWTH

Customer Additions Halved as Average Spend Fell

MNTN tracks active Performance TV (PTV) customers — brands that ran streaming TV campaigns on its platform over the past twelve months. Customer growth has slowed every quarter for a year because the company is adding fewer brands and smaller advertisers spend less.

  • Active PTV customers over the past twelve months: 4,373, up 31.9% from a year ago vs 39.9% in the second quarter
  • Net customers added in the quarter: 148 by our math, down from 351 in the second quarter and 296 a year ago
  • Quarterly revenue per active customer: $18,351 by our math, down 13.1% from $21,117 a year ago

"What MNTN needs is operational rigor and I am here to instill a culture of accountability and flawless execution," chief executive Tony Weisman said. Yet customer growth has trailed revenue growth by 17 to 36 percentage points over the past five quarters. With twelve-month customer growth down to 31.9% and quarterly net additions cut in half, that gap now pulls total revenue below last year's level.

What to watch: same-quarter active customer growth and customer retention rates in the quarterly Form 10-Q filing. A further drop in quarterly active customers below the second quarter's 24% pace would confirm that new small-business sign-ups are not replacing normal customer churn.

driver faded MARGIN

Higher Tech Costs Erase Fourth-Quarter Operating Leverage

Rising profit margins were a steady positive for MNTN through the first half of 2026. That trend broke against the company's own plan in the third quarter and turns negative in the fourth-quarter outlook.

Third-quarter adjusted EBITDA of $19.9 million missed the $22–25 million target because revenue fell short while technology and development spending rose 27.3% from a year ago to $17.5 million, or 21.8% of revenue, up 2.2 percentage points. Pohlen lowered the full-year adjusted EBITDA outlook by $31.5 million at the middle of the range "as we realign the sales organization and focus on our strategic priorities".

For the fourth quarter, management expects adjusted EBITDA of $8–10 million. By our math, that cuts the margin to 11.8% at the middle of the range, down from 24.8% in the third quarter and 32.3% in the fourth quarter of 2025, erasing a year of margin gains.

What to watch: fourth-quarter sales and marketing and engineering expense lines in the full-year results. If operating expenses keep rising while revenue falls 12%, margins will stay near 10% into early 2027.

🔴 persistent CAPITAL ALLOCATION

No Shares Bought Under the $100 Million Plan

On August 3, 2026, MNTN's board approved a programme to buy back up to $100 million of Class A common stock through August 2027. Meanwhile, employee stock awards and option exercises have steadily increased the share count since last year's initial public offering.

The nine-month cash flow statement shows zero share repurchases in the third quarter, even as cash grew to $252.3 million and employees repaid $6.6 million of promissory notes. Stock-based compensation added another $6.3 million of non-cash expense in the quarter ($18.9 million over nine months), lifting basic shares outstanding by 849,000 from the second quarter to 74.8 million.

What to watch: share repurchase disclosures in the third-quarter Form 10-Q and fourth-quarter release. Leaving the $100 million authorization unused after the outlook cut would leave stock compensation dilution unchecked.

🔴 persistent COMPETITION

Risks this quarter didn't answer

Two standing concerns received no direct disclosure in the third-quarter earnings release.

  • Small-business CTV competition: management attributed the revenue miss to internal sales execution, leaving open how much ad spending moved to rivals such as Amazon, Roku, The Trade Desk or Pinterest; the earnings call Q&A will test whether win rates fell.
  • Stock-paid contractor and litigation: the release included $743,000 of legal settlement reserves and $6.3 million of stock compensation (down from $8.8 million in the second quarter), and the Form 10-Q footnotes will show whether the contractor marketing agreement and litigation continued.

⇘ decelerating

Free cash flow — operating cash flow minus capitalized software development costs — was $7.1 million in the third quarter by our math, up 13.1% from $6.3 million a year ago. Over the first nine months of 2026, the streaming ad company generated $34.2 million of free cash flow, or 14.5% of revenue.

Accounts receivable, net (26Q3) $54.0 million
⇘ decelerating

Uncollected customer bills fell 6.5% from a year ago and 10.0% from the second quarter, even though revenue rose 14.6% from last year. Faster collections helped nine-month operating cash flow, while accounts payable and accrued expenses dropped by $22.5 million since December.

🔮 Guidance

FY2026 Revenue $311.0–314.0 million
🠇 cut from $347.0–357.0 million
⇘ decelerating

Cut. The middle of the full-year range dropped by $39.5 million, slowing expected growth excluding the sold Maximum Effort agency from 24% to 10% (8% on a reported basis). After raising the target by $2 million in the first quarter and holding it in the second, management cut the outlook following the third-quarter sales miss.

FY2026 Adjusted EBITDA $66.0–68.0 million
🠇 cut from $96.0–101.0 million
⇘ decelerating

Cut. Management lowered the middle of the full-year operating cash profit target by $31.5 million. By our math, $67 million at the middle of the range is down 1.5% from 2025's $68.0 million total and reduces the full-year margin to 21.4%.

Q4 2026 Revenue $75.0–78.0 million
⇄ reversing

New. The fourth-quarter plan points to $76.5 million at the middle of the range, which by our math is a 12.2% decline from $87.1 million a year ago and a 4.7% drop from the third quarter. The fourth quarter is normally the ad industry's peak holiday season, and the previous annual plan implied $104.8–111.8 million.

Q4 2026 Adjusted EBITDA $8.0–10.0 million
⇄ reversing

New. The plan calls for $9.0 million at the middle of the range, down 68.0% from $28.1 million a year ago and down 54.8% from the third quarter by our math. That implies an 11.8% margin, less than half of the third quarter's 24.8% rate.

❓ Key Questions

What broke inside the sales team in Q3?

Management cut fourth-quarter revenue by $31.8 million against what its prior full-year plan implied and replaced the chief executive and inside-sales leader. Investors need to know whether sales reps missed quotas, left after the April layoffs, or lost deals to rivals.

What was same-quarter active customer growth and retention?

The press release only gives the twelve-month customer count (+31.9%), which lags current bookings. In the second quarter, same-quarter active customers grew 24%, and the third-quarter rate will show how fast current demand slowed.

Why wasn't the $100 million buyback used in Q3?

The board approved a $100 million share repurchase programme on August 3, 2026, and the company holds $252.3 million in cash with no debt, yet the cash flow statement shows zero shares bought.

Are Express and QuickFrame AI generating paid revenue yet?

Last quarter management reported over 7,000 sign-ups for the Express small-business tier and 73,000 for QuickFrame AI, promising a meaningful growth boost in 2027, but gave no update in the third-quarter release.
