Louisiana-Pacific (LPX) Q3 2026 earnings review

Louisiana-Pacific Siding sales hit a record, but panel losses continue

Louisiana-Pacific's exterior siding business returned to shipment growth and set a sales record, while its structural wood panel division stayed unprofitable. Total revenue rose 4% from a year ago to $691 million as Siding sales climbed 7% on a 2% volume gain. Chief executive Jason Ringblom credited an expanded distribution network and raised the full-year profit outlook, though a $14 million inventory reserve adjustment drove most of the quarter's panel beat.

At a glance
Siding net sales$473M +7% from a year ago (record high)
Siding unit shipments+2% from a year ago (-11% last quarter)
OSB Adjusted EBITDA$(24)M included $14M inventory reserve benefit
FY26 Adjusted EBITDA outlookRaised $12.5M middle of the range: $275M (-37% YoY)

⚖️ Verdict: 🟢 Bullish

The story got better because Siding shipment volumes grew again after two quarters of steep drops, and the fourth-quarter outlook calls for another 3% sales increase. That confirms the dealer inventory overhang has cleared. One caution: raw material and freight costs held Siding profit nearly flat despite record sales, and deeper losses in South America offset half of the full-year outlook raise.

The question now is whether Siding can expand its profit margins in 2027 while wood panel prices stay depressed. Either new pre-painted siding capacity and annual price hikes outpace raw material costs, or cost inflation and weak single-family homebuilding compress margins further. Fourth-quarter Siding margins and 2027 pricing commentary will settle it.

🐂 Bull Case

🟢🟢 GROWTH

Siding Shipments Grew Again and Set a Sales Record

"Siding returned to volume growth in the third quarter and set a new record for net sales," chief executive Jason Ringblom said. The Siding division makes engineered wood exterior panels, Including SmartSide Trim & Siding, for homes and outdoor sheds. Shipments had dropped 18% in the first quarter and 11% in the second as dealers cleared out extra inventory.

In the third quarter, Siding sales rose 7% from a year ago to $473 million, beating the top of the company's $460–470 million plan. Shipments grew 2% to 477 million square feet, and average selling prices climbed 5%. Ringblom also said "LP's expanded distribution network positions SmartSide Trim & Siding for continued growth and share gains."

The rebound matters because it shows the dealer inventory overhang from late last year has cleared. Furthermore, the fourth-quarter outlook calls for $390–400 million in Siding sales, or about 3% growth against a tough prior-year period when customers bought early. That second straight growth reading confirms demand has stabilized despite a slow housing market.

What to watch: Siding shipment growth in the fourth quarter when full-year results arrive in February. Positive shipment growth against last year's stockpiling quarter would prove the new distributor partnerships are winning market share.

🟢 fading CASH

Lower Spending and Inventory Reductions Boosted Cash Flow

Louisiana-Pacific spent much of the first half burning cash as it built new factory lines and endured collapsing wood panel prices. In the third quarter, the building-products maker generated $112 million in operating cash flow and $56 million in free cash flow, up from $5 million a year ago by our math.

Two actions drove the cash recovery. First, the company pulled $38 million out of inventories during the quarter. Second, management cut its full-year capital expenditure plan by another $20 million to about $300 million, down from a $400 million plan at the start of the year. Year-to-date free cash flow of $38 million still falls short of the $63 million paid in dividends, because the fourth quarter requires $124 million in capital spending by our math.

What to watch: fourth-quarter capital expenditures and working capital cash flows in February. Keeping full-year free cash flow positive would allow the company to fund its dividend without drawing down its $265 million cash balance.

Positives this quarter didn't test

Three standing growth initiatives received no updated figures in the third-quarter earnings release because those details usually appear on the conference call.

  • ExpertFinish pre-painted siding mix: share of Siding volume and revenue was not in the release; the conference call will show if it held above 12% of volume.
  • Bath, New York prefinishing capacity: no update on the planned 20 million square feet addition due late this year; management commentary on the call will confirm the timeline.
  • National homebuilder bundling: no update on enterprise agreements combining Siding and structural panels; the call will test whether builder adoption stayed on track for 100 million square feet.

🔴🔴 persistent MARGIN contradicts narrative

OSB Panel Losses Persist Behind an Accounting Benefit

Oriented Strand Board (OSB) is a structural wood panel used in home framing and sub-flooring. Louisiana-Pacific also sells a higher-priced line called Structural Solutions, which includes panels with radiant heat barriers and water protection. While the headline OSB Adjusted EBITDA loss of $24 million beat the $45 million loss estimate, an accounting adjustment drove most of the improvement.

  • OSB Adjusted EBITDA: $24 million loss, aided by $14 million from "lower inventory reserve adjustments"
  • Underlying OSB Adjusted EBITDA: $38 million loss excluding the inventory reserve benefit, by our math
  • Commodity OSB: shipments jumped 25% from a year ago, while average selling prices fell 6%
  • Structural Solutions: shipments dropped 10% from a year ago, with average prices flat

This matters because the higher-value Structural Solutions line is shrinking while commodity volume surges, shifting the product mix toward lower-margin panels as building codes change. Furthermore, the outlook expects the OSB loss to widen to $35 million in the fourth quarter based on October panel prices.

What to watch: Structural Solutions shipment volume and commodity OSB prices in the fourth quarter. Another double-digit drop in Structural Solutions volume would show that building-code changes are permanently eroding the value-added panel business.

🔴 persistent MARGIN

Raw Material and Freight Costs Squeezed Siding Margins

Even though Siding sales hit a record $473 million, segment Adjusted EBITDA rose only $1 million from a year ago to $119 million. By our math, Siding Adjusted EBITDA margin slipped 1.2 percentage points to 25.2%. Across the whole company, gross margin fell 3.0 percentage points to 16.5% as cost of sales—the cost of making and shipping products—rose 2.8 points to 83.4% of revenue, outweighing a 3.3-point drop in overhead and administrative expenses.

The company said $23 million in higher Siding prices and $4 million from volume were nearly wiped out by a $19 million jump in "raw material, freight, and labor costs" plus $6 million in maintenance expenses. For the fourth quarter, management plans for Siding Adjusted EBITDA of $80–90 million, or about a 22% margin. That is down from 25.3% in last year's fourth quarter and implies profit falling 12% at the middle of the range despite 3% sales growth.

What to watch: Siding Adjusted EBITDA margin in the fourth quarter and the 2027 annual price increase announcement. If raw material inflation keeps eating up price gains, Siding profit will stall even as shipments recover.

🔴 strengthening GROWTH

South America Losses Prompted Another Outlook Cut

Louisiana-Pacific groups its South American panel and siding mills together with timberlands and unallocated corporate expenses inside its Other segment. In the third quarter, Other revenue fell 7% from a year ago to $38 million, and its Adjusted EBITDA loss widened by $4 million to $12 million. The company blamed "a decline in sales volumes and selling prices in South America" along with higher local operating costs.

Three months ago, management's full-year plan assumed Other operations would lose $35 million, which by our math implied only a $1 million loss for the fourth quarter. Now management assumes a $50 million full-year loss, the third straight cut from its initial $20 million estimate. That new assumption includes a $15 million loss in the fourth quarter, erasing a significant portion of the company's domestic profit.

What to watch: Other segment Adjusted EBITDA in the fourth quarter. A loss worse than the $15 million assumption would show South American construction demand is still deteriorating.

🔴 persistent MACRO

US Single-Family Homebuilding Keeps Shrinking

Louisiana-Pacific tracks United States housing starts from the Census Bureau because new residential construction drives demand for both structural panels and exterior siding. In the third quarter, total US housing starts fell 4.2% from a year ago to 341 thousand, as multi-family starts dropped 9.2% to 109 thousand.

Single-family homes, which use much more wood siding and structural paneling per unit than apartment buildings, slipped 1.3% in the quarter to 232 thousand and are down 4.0% over the first nine months of 2026. Because high mortgage rates continue to hold back new home construction, the manufacturer must rely on repair and remodeling projects or market-share gains to grow Siding volumes.

What to watch: US single-family housing starts in the fourth-quarter table. Continued declines in single-family building would cap OSB panel demand and keep wood panel prices depressed into 2027.

💲 Other KPIs

Total revenue and profit (26Q3) $691 million
⇄ reversing

Total revenue rose 4.2% from a year ago to $691 million, ending four straight quarters of declines. Net income grew from $9 million to $23 million, or $0.32 per diluted share, largely because last year included a $13 million asset write-down. Profit per share excluding one-offs rose 5.4% to $0.39.

Share repurchases (26Q3) $0 million
⇒ stable

The wood-products maker bought back no shares for a sixth straight quarter, leaving its diluted share count unchanged at 70 million. Instead, it returned $21 million to shareholders through its $0.30 quarterly cash dividend while preserving about $1 billion in total liquidity.

🔮 Guidance

Q4 Siding Net Sales $390–400 million
🠆 unchanged from $379–409 million (implied)
⇘ decelerating

Unchanged at the middle of the range. The fourth-quarter plan calls for about 3% growth from a year ago, down from 7% in the third quarter. Three months ago, the full-year outlook implied $379–409 million for the fourth quarter by our math, so the new explicit range tightens the target around the same $395 million midpoint.

FY26 Siding Net Sales $1.66–1.67 billion
🠅 raised from $1.65–1.67 billion
⇒ stable

Raised at the bottom end. Management lifted the floor of the full-year range by $10 million, raising the middle of the range by $5 million to $1.665 billion, or a 1% decline from last year. Across four quarters, the full-year midpoint moved from $1.70 billion to $1.66 billion, held steady, and now ticked up $5 million.

Q4 Siding Adjusted EBITDA $80–90 million
🠆 unchanged from $76–101 million (implied)
⇘ decelerating

Narrowed. The plan calls for $85 million at the middle of the range, or about a 22% margin, down from $97 million and a 25.3% margin a year ago. Three months ago, the full-year target implied $76–101 million for the fourth quarter by our math.

FY26 Siding Adjusted EBITDA $415–425 million
🠅 raised from $410–425 million
⇒ stable

Raised at the bottom end. The floor rose by $5 million, lifting the middle of the range by $2.5 million to $420 million (~25% margin), which is down 5.4% from 2025.

Q4 OSB Adjusted EBITDA $(35) million
🠅 raised from ~$(42) million (implied)
⇘ decelerating

Raised against the prior implied figure. Based on the modeling assumption that benchmark wood panel prices stay flat at October 30 levels, OSB will lose $35 million in the fourth quarter, wider than the $24 million third-quarter loss but smaller than the $42 million loss implied three months ago by our math.

FY26 OSB Adjusted EBITDA $(95) million
🠅 raised from $(120) million
⇄ reversing

Raised. The full-year loss estimate improved by $25 million after the third quarter beat its target by $21 million. Earlier this year, the full-year estimate fell from breakeven in February to a $40 million loss in May and a $120 million loss in August.

Q4 Consolidated Adjusted EBITDA $30–40 million
🠅 raised from ~$27.5 million (implied)
⇘ decelerating

Raised against the prior implied figure. The middle of the range is $35 million, down 30% from $50 million a year ago and down from $82 million in the third quarter. The plan assumes Other operations will lose $15 million in the quarter.

FY26 Consolidated Adjusted EBITDA $270–280 million
🠅 raised from $255–270 million
⇄ reversing

Raised. The middle of the range rose by $12.5 million to $275 million, down 37% from $436 million in 2025. The $27 million third-quarter beat was partly offset by widening the full-year Other operations loss assumption from $35 million to $50 million.

FY26 Capital Expenditures ~$300 million
🠇 cut from ~$320 million
⇘ decelerating

Cut. Management trimmed planned capital spending by another $20 million, all from sustaining maintenance (now $160 million vs $180 million previously), while keeping strategic growth projects at $140 million. It is the third cut this year: -$10M, -$70M, -$20M. By our math, the plan leaves $124 million of spending for the fourth quarter.

❓ Key Questions

Did the October 1 distributor transition cause any Siding disruptions?

Chief executive Jason Ringblom committed to having new two-step distribution partners in place by October 1 to replace Boise Cascade. Investors need to know if the handover went smoothly or restricted fourth-quarter order intake.

What was ExpertFinish's share of Siding volume and revenue?

The company disclosed ExpertFinish volume and revenue shares in the first quarter (12% and 18%) but omitted them in the second-quarter call and third-quarter release. The mix is essential to gauge whether pre-painted siding is lifting average prices.

Why did the fourth-quarter Other loss assumption jump to $15 million?

Three months ago, the full-year Other assumption of $(35) million implied only a $1 million fourth-quarter loss. Cutting the full-year assumption to $(50) million implies a $15 million fourth-quarter loss, and the release does not explain how much is South America versus corporate overhead.

Why are commodity OSB shipments surging while Structural Solutions shrink?

Commodity OSB volume jumped 25% from a year ago in the third quarter while higher-value Structural Solutions fell 10%. Management has cited building-code changes hurting radiant barrier panels, and investors need to know if mill capacity is permanently shifting back to commodity boards.
