KVH Industries (KVHI) Q3 2026 earnings review

KVH satellite sales jump, but Starlink costs squeeze its margins

KVH Industries, a provider of satellite internet to ships, is growing rapidly as maritime fleets switch to low-earth-orbit satellites, but hardware write-downs and reseller fees still hold back reported profit. Sales from businesses owned a year ago rose 26% by our math (35% in total), and cash profit excluding one-offs nearly tripled because overhead stayed flat. Chief executive Brent C. Bruun lifted the middle of the full-year revenue outlook, though by our math the plan points to an 8% sequential revenue drop in the fourth quarter.

At a glance
Sales from businesses owned a year ago+26% headline revenue $38.4M, +35% from a year ago
Low-earth-orbit share of service revenue58% 51% last quarter and 39% a year ago
Cash profit (EBITDA), excluding one-offs$3.9M +188% from a year ago
Full-year revenue outlookRaised $2.5M middle of the range: $140M (+26% growth)

โš–๏ธ Verdict: โšช Neutral

The story is unchanged because booming satellite demand and a higher full-year plan were offset by fresh proof that supplier SpaceX controls the economics. On one side, KVH restored its annual targets to the press release and lifted the bottom of the range. One caution: Starlink is raising wholesale prices, and KVH said passing those prices through in December will cut its service gross margin without adding gross profit dollars, while another $2 million inventory write-down kept the company in a net loss.

The question now is whether adding software and television services can lift profit margins when satellite airtime itself is a low-margin reseller business. Either the new managed IT and crew streaming tools expand service gross profit, or Starlink wholesale costs and hardware losses keep operating income near zero. First-quarter 2027 service gross margin, after the December price hike and the year-end expiration of older satellite contracts, will tell.

๐ŸŸข๐ŸŸข strengthening GROWTH

Low-Earth-Orbit Satellites Carry Service Growth

"Customers are choosing KVH as they move to LEO, and they increasingly rely on us for more than connectivity, from managed IT and cybersecurity to live crew content," chief executive Brent C. Bruun said. Low-earth-orbit (LEO) satellites such as Starlink and OneWeb sit closer to Earth than older geostationary satellites, so they deliver faster internet to ships.

KVH signed its first subscribers for its managed IT service during the quarter. In September it added cybersecurity tools to CommBox Edge Pro, its shipboard network router, and launched Link Live to stream live television to crews.

  • Service revenue: $33.0 million, up 30% from a year ago and up 20% from businesses owned a year ago by our math
  • LEO share of service revenue: 58%, up from 51% last quarter and 39% a year ago
  • LEO service revenue: $19.1 million by our math, nearly double the $9.9 million of a year ago

This matters because recurring service revenue grew 11% from last quarter, accelerating from 6% sequential growth in the second quarter. That jump beat what the company's prior full-year plan implied, even before the new IT and television services contributed much revenue.

What to watch: subscribing vessel counts and average revenue per vessel in the quarterly filing or conference call. A rising per-vessel figure would show that the new IT and television tools are lifting customer spending.

Cost Discipline Nearly Triples Cash Profit

KVH is keeping overhead flat while revenue expands, which management calls "disciplined cost management driving operating leverage". Earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortisation (EBITDA), excluding one-offs, rose 188% from a year ago to $3.9 million, up from $3.0 million last quarter.

  • Sales, marketing and support: 13.1% of revenue, down 4.1 percentage points from a year ago by our math
  • General and administrative overhead: 10.4% of revenue, down 2.6 percentage points by our math
  • Research and development: 1.9% of revenue, down 1.6 percentage points after winding down factory work

Because operating expenses grew only 2% while total sales rose 35%, cash profit margin excluding one-offs reached 10.2% of revenue, up from 4.8% a year ago. The maritime group raised the bottom of its full-year EBITDA outlook by $2 million, to $13โ€“15 million.

What to watch: fourth-quarter general and administrative expenses when the enterprise software upgrade finishes at year-end. A drop in professional fees would show that overhead can fall in dollar terms.

๐Ÿป Bear Case

๐Ÿ”ด๐Ÿ”ด strengthening MARGIN contradicts narrative

Starlink Price Hike Will Squeeze Service Margins

"That broader role matters even more as LEO pricing evolves, and we remain focused on growing recurring service revenue and converting it into cash flow," Bruun said. Because KVH resells satellite airtime from SpaceX's Starlink, its service profitability depends on the wholesale rates Starlink sets.

Starlink recently announced price increases for all resellers and maritime customers. KVH will raise its own Starlink plan prices on December 1, 2026, and said this will "increase service revenue and reduce service gross margin, but does not expect a material change in service gross profit".

That disclosure cuts against the idea that rapid LEO revenue growth brings matching profit growth. Passing wholesale cost hikes straight through adds zero gross profit dollars, and service gross margin already fell 2 percentage points from last quarter to 33.8% as higher-margin legacy satellite customers left.

What to watch: first-quarter 2027 service gross margin, the first full period after the December price increase and after legacy satellite bandwidth commitments expire at year-end. A drop below 33% would show that Starlink's wholesale pricing is outweighing the savings from retiring older satellite contracts.

Another Write-Down Keeps Hardware Sales in the Red

KVH has been winding down its Rhode Island antenna factory since early 2024 as customers switch to third-party Starlink and OneWeb dishes. Hardware product sales jumped 79% from a year ago and 37% from last quarter to $5.5 million on strong LEO terminal demand.

Yet cost of product sales was $8.1 million, producing a $2.7 million gross loss on hardware. That figure includes a $2.3 million non-cash inventory write-down, following a $5.5 million write-down a year ago.

Even excluding the write-down, hardware cost of sales exceeded hardware revenue by $0.3 million, or a negative 6.0% gross margin by our math. BecauseKVH sells third-party LEO terminals near cost while absorbing leftover factory overhead, the company posted a $1.2 million operating loss despite 35% revenue growth.

What to watch: fourth-quarter cost of product sales when the manufacturing wind-down is scheduled to finish at the end of 2026. If hardware gross margin stays negative in 2027, terminal discounting is the cause rather than factory closure costs.

Risks this quarter didn't answer

Four standing concerns around subscriber metrics and supplier commitments cannot be read from the earnings release alone and await the conference call or quarterly filing.

  • Subscribing vessel count and revenue per vessel: not in the release; needed to test whether low-data fishing plans are still diluting average spending.
  • Terminal shipments: not in the release; needed to check whether shipments stayed inside management's 2,000โ€“3,000 quarterly target.
  • Land-based Starlink sites: not in the release; needed to see if land installations grew after Starlink closed its local-priority reseller channel.
  • Prepaid Starlink data consumption: prepaid assets stayed high at $20.5 million, and the release warns of the risk that KVH is "unable to consume our prepaid Starlink Global Business data within the contract period, requiring us to expense the unused portion".

Share Repurchase Program Completed With No Replacement

KVH spent $10.7 million to buy back about 1.2 million shares during the third quarter, which lowered its diluted share count by 5.7% from a year ago to 18.3 million. Those purchases finished the board's $15 million buyback plan, and the company has no new repurchase plan in place, stating it will prioritise growing its LEO subscriber base, expanding value-added services, and pursuing small acquisitions.

๐Ÿ’ฒ Other KPIs

Cash and cash equivalents (26Q3) $50.7 million
โ‡˜ decelerating

Cash fell by $7.0 million from last quarter and $19.2 million from year-end 2025, while the company continues to carry no debt. Because KVH spent $10.7 million on share buybacks during the third quarter, the business generated $3.7 million of cash before buybacks by our math, despite $1.5 million in capital expenditures.

Prepaid expenses and other current assets (26Q3) $20.5 million
โ‡— accelerating

Prepaid assets rose by $0.7 million from last quarter and are up 157% from $8.0 million at the end of 2025. This line holdsKVH's bulk prepayments for Starlink satellite data pools, tying up working capital ahead of customer usage while inventory fell 33% from a year ago to $8.9 million.

Accounts receivable (26Q3) $29.6 million
โ‡— accelerating

Money owed by customers rose 3.2% from last quarter and 21.7% from a year ago, growing slower than the 35.1% increase in total revenue. Meanwhile, deferred revenue โ€” cash customers have paid upfront for future service โ€” rose 13.5% from a year ago to $1.5 million.

๐Ÿ”ฎ Guidance

FY26 Revenue $137โ€“143 million
๐Ÿ … raised from $130โ€“145 million
โ‡˜ decelerating

Raised at the middle of the range. Management lifted the bottom of its full-year target by $7 million and trimmed the top by $2 million, moving the middle up $2.5 million to $140 million, or 26% annual growth. By our math, that leaves $35.5 million for the fourth quarter, down 8% from the third quarter and up 16% from a year ago as the October 2025 Asia-Pacific acquisition passes its one-year mark.

FY26 Adjusted EBITDA, excluding one-offs $13โ€“15 million
๐Ÿ … raised from $11โ€“16 million
โ‡— accelerating

Raised at the middle of the range. The satellite provider narrowed its full-year cash profit plan, lifting the middle of the range by $0.5 million to $14 million, or 73% growth from 2025. By our math, that implies $4.3 million in the fourth quarter, up from $3.9 million in the third quarter and equal to a 12.1% margin on implied fourth-quarter sales.

โ“ Key Questions

How many vessels subscribed at quarter-end, and at what ARPU?

The earnings release did not include subscribing vessel counts or terminal shipments. Investors need both figures from the call to see if low-data fishing plans are still diluting revenue per vessel.

How much prepaid Starlink data remains, and when does it expire?

Prepaid assets sit at $20.5 million, and the risk factors warn that unused Starlink Global Business data must be expensed at contract end. Management has not stated the remaining dollar balance or expiration date.

Why are Starlink price increases only a pass-through with zero markup?

KVH expects its December 1 Starlink price hike to raise service revenue and lower service gross margin without changing gross profit dollars. That implies KVH cannot mark up Starlink's wholesale rate increase.

Will hardware gross margins turn positive once factory work ends?

Even excluding the $2.3 million inventory write-down, hardware cost of sales exceeded hardware revenue by $0.3 million by our math. Investors need to know how much of that loss is unabsorbed factory overhead versus terminal discounting.
