Intrepid Potash (IPI) Q3 2026 earnings review

Intrepid Potash raises Trio output, but potash costs climb

Intrepid Potash, the only US miner of potassium chloride fertilizer, grew earnings on flat sales as gains at its specialty Trio mine offset rising costs in standard potash. Third-quarter sales held at $51 million while net profit from continuing operations more than doubled to $1.7 million, helped by interest on its $161 million cash pile. Chief executive Kevin Crutchfield raised the 2026 Trio production plan and outlined 2027 mine upgrades that lift output in both segments.

At a glance
Revenue from continuing operations$51.0M +0.4% from a year ago
Trio segment gross profit$5.8M +33% from a year ago on 19% higher output
Potash cost of goods sold$384/ton +13% from a year ago ($340/ton)
2026 Trio production outlookRaised 10k tons 305–315k tons; 2027 set at 320–330k

⚖️ Verdict: 🟢 Bullish

The story got better because the East underground mine proved it can run at the higher pace needed to keep Trio unit costs down, and management finally started buying back shares. Trio production jumped 19% to 83 thousand tons, clearing the second-half hurdle and cutting cost per ton by 13%. The bad news: potash unit costs rose for a third straight quarter to $384 per ton after a harvest delay at Moab.

The question now is whether rising Trio output and 2027 mine projects can lift thin operating profit, or whether creeping potash costs and a possible reversal in Middle East sulfur disruptions will eat the gains. Next quarter's potash unit cost during the peak fourth-quarter harvest will show if the cost rise is temporary.

🟢🟢 MARGIN

East Mine Upgrades Lift Trio Output and Margin

Trio is Intrepid's specialty fertilizer that combines potassium, magnesium and sulfate in a single particle. Coming into the quarter, the full-year Trio production target looked stretched because it required at least 76 thousand tons a quarter in the second half, above any recent period. Chief executive Kevin Crutchfield said "Our continued focus on operational discipline, consistency and reliability is delivering tangible results and supports an increase in our full-year production outlook for Trio."

The East underground mine in New Mexico cleared that hurdle after the miner put a new continuous mining machine into service earlier this year and lengthened shift hours. Third-quarter Trio output jumped 19% from a year ago to 83 thousand tons, which spread fixed mine expenses over more tons. Cost of goods sold fell 8.9 percentage points of Trio segment revenue, lifting segment gross profit 33% to $5.8 million.

  • Trio production: 83 thousand tons, up 19% from a year ago and up from 75 thousand in Q2
  • Trio cost of goods sold: $224 per ton, down 13% from $257 a year ago
  • 2026 Trio production outlook: raised by 10 thousand tons to 305–315 thousand tons
  • 2027 Trio production outlook: set at 320–330 thousand tons after an extra $16 million of planned mine spending

What to watch: fourth-quarter Trio cost per ton when the company ships 83–93 thousand tons from inventory. Holding unit costs near $220 per ton during a high-volume shipping quarter would confirm the East mine savings are permanent.

Share Buybacks Begin Alongside High-Return Mine Plans

After selling its oilfield ranch in April 2026, the fertilizer maker held more than $160 million in cash and short-term investments with no debt. The board expanded its share buyback plan to $50 million in June, and management promised to start buying shares in the third quarter.

Intrepid started the program with 22 thousand shares for $0.8 million during the quarter and then bought another 66 thousand shares for $2.1 million in October, noting that it had "accelerated repurchases since the end of the third quarter". Management also laid out 2027 expansion budgets of $16 million for Trio and $20 million for potash that aim to "increase production, extend the life of existing operations, and enhance the long-term earnings power of the business" at an expected return of about 30%.

What to watch: fourth-quarter share repurchases in the full-year report. A steady buyback pace alongside the $36 million of 2027 project spending would show management will not let idle cash pile up again.

🟢 strengthening MACRO

Trio Price Increases Hold Into the Fourth Quarter

Cautious farm spending and last-minute ordering have been a concern across the fertilizer sector. Crutchfield said "Stronger crop prices are improving grower sentiment and encouraging demand for nutrients in the fall application season."

In October, the Denver-based producer ran a one-week Trio fall order program at $410 per ton and then raised its list price by $30 to $440 per ton. Third-quarter net realized prices — selling prices after freight and byproduct credits — rose to $394 per ton for potash (above the $380–390 plan) and $408 per ton for Trio. By our math, the fourth-quarter volume and price outlooks point to combined net sales rising 12% from a year ago to $60.8 million.

What to watch: realized Trio prices in the first quarter of 2027. A step-up toward the $440 list price after the fall discount volumes ship in the fourth quarter would show farmers are accepting higher prices for spring planting.

Potash Unit Costs Rise for a Third Quarter

Potash, a potassium mineral used in crop fertilizer and animal feed, is Intrepid's largest revenue source at 61% of third-quarter sales. While Crutchfield highlighted operational consistency and improving cost structure, potash unit costs moved the wrong way for a third straight quarter.

Intrepid chose to "delay the start of the Moab harvest season to allow additional evaporation", which cut third-quarter potash production by 17% from a year ago to 34 thousand tons. Because the company sold more tons from its higher-cost solar facilities, potash cost of goods sold rose 13% from a year ago to $384 per ton (and 7.7 percentage points of segment revenue), cutting potash gross profit by 43% to $3.6 million. Even so, the company kept its 2026 potash production outlook at 290–300 thousand tons and projected 310–330 thousand tons for 2027.

What to watch: fourth-quarter potash cost per ton as the delayed Moab harvest comes in and implied fourth-quarter production reaches 104 thousand tons by our math. If unit costs do not drop back below $340 per ton on peak seasonal harvest volumes, higher-cost sites will keep eroding Trio's profit gains.

Thin Operating Profit Leaves Earnings Exposed to Sulfur

Even with multi-year highs in Trio volumes and pricing, total operating profit fell from $484 thousand a year ago to $209 thousand, or 0.4% of revenue. Selling and administrative overhead rose 1.3 percentage points of sales to 19.0% ($9.7 million), while $1.4 million of interest income on the cash pile provided most of the $1.7 million net profit.

Trio generated 58% of total gross profit this quarter, and its high price rests partly on tight global sulfur supplies. In this release, the company added a specific warning about "the conflict involving Iran and the blockage of the Strait of Hormuz" to its risk list, underscoring how much its earnings rely on a geopolitical premium that could reverse if Middle East shipping normalizes.

What to watch: selling and administrative expenses as a share of revenue in the fourth quarter. With implied fertilizer net sales rising 12% by our math, overhead must fall well below 15% of sales for mine gains to reach operating profit.

🔴 persistent DISCLOSURE

Risks this quarter didn't answer

Three standing items from prior quarters received no new numbers in the third-quarter earnings release.

  • Wendover lithium project costs and schedule: after management promised a fourth-quarter update on the last call, the release gave only two general sentences on engineering and permitting with no build cost, operating cost or timeline.
  • New Mexico water rights and Pecos River repayment: no update on whether final settlement costs will exceed the $5.0 million charge booked in Q2 or when the temporary state water easement will be renewed; the quarterly 10-Q filing's legal footnote will carry any change.
  • Exxon (XTO) $50 million contingent access fee: long-term deferred other income fell by the usual $564 thousand to $41.5 million, with no timeline for when drilling approvals might trigger the $50 million cash payment.

New. The $390 per ton middle of the range is up 3% from $379 a year ago, though down 4% from Q3's $408 per ton because it includes discounted October fall fill orders booked before the $30 per ton list price hike to $440.

❓ Key Questions

What are the total cost and Intrepid's share for Carlsbad?

The U.S. Department of Agriculture selected Intrepid for $139 million in proposed matching funds for a 220 thousand ton sulfate of potash plant near Carlsbad. Management has not disclosed total project cost or whether Intrepid would contribute $139 million of its own cash.

Why were Wendover lithium cost numbers omitted again?

On the second-quarter call, management expected to share a substantive update on the Wendover lithium project on the third-quarter call after earlier targeting engineering completion in early summer. The release offered no build cost, operating cost or timeline.

Will the Q4 Moab harvest bring potash costs below $340?

Potash cost of goods sold reached $384 per ton in Q3, up from $359 in Q2 and $340 a year ago, which management blamed on high-cost site mix. Investors need to know what unit cost the 2027 plan (310–330 thousand tons) assumes.

What is the maintenance capex baseline for 2027?

Intrepid outlined $16 million of Trio growth spending and $20 million of potash mine development for 2027, while raising 2026 total capital spending to $45 million. Management has not stated total 2027 capital spending including routine maintenance.
