Illumina (ILMN) Q3 2026 earnings review
Illumina's profit margin rises, even as sales growth slows
Illumina, the leader in DNA sequencing machines, beat its third-quarter profit plan while underlying sales growth stepped down from last quarter. Underlying sales outside China rose 4.7%, and operating margin excluding one-offs and tariff refunds reached 25%. Chief executive Jacob Thaysen lifted the full-year dollar forecast, while a one-off tariff refund added $42 million to reported profit.
| Underlying sales outside China | +4.7% from a year ago (~4.5% target) |
|---|---|
| Revenue excluding tariff refunds | $1,166M +7.6% from a year ago |
| Operating margin excluding one-offs | 25.0% ~24% target (ex-tariff refunds) |
| Full-year revenue outlook | Raised $30M middle of the range: $4.65B |
โ๏ธ Verdict: ๐ข Bullish
The story got better because the third-quarter margin beat removes the toughest hurdle from the fourth-quarter profit plan. In addition, the revenue drag from China shrank to almost nothing as the business lapped last year's restrictions. One caution: the company kept its full-year underlying growth floor outside China at 5%, which by our math allows fourth-quarter growth to slow below 4%.
The question now is whether recent instrument shipments will speed up chemical sales in 2027 or merely replace older machines. If the new sequencers add capacity, underlying sales growth will climb toward 7% to 9% next year; if they replace old units, growth stays near 5%. The third-quarter clinical chemical growth rate on the conference call and the 2027 outlook in February will settle it.
๐ Bull Case
Cost Discipline Lifted Operating Margin to 25%
Illumina's profit margin had been a standing concern because the full-year plan required a steep fourth-quarter jump on unnamed cost cuts. In the third quarter, the DNA sequencing company beat its 24% target by a full percentage point, reaching a 25.0% operating margin excluding one-offs and tariff refunds. That margin is up 0.5 percentage points from a year ago and 2.5 points from the second quarter.
- Selling, general and administrative expense: 24.1% of revenue excluding tariff refunds, down 1.5 percentage points from a year ago by our math
- Research and development expense: 20.9% of revenue excluding tariff refunds, down 0.2 percentage points from a year ago by our math
- Gross margin excluding one-offs and tariff refunds: 69.4%, up 0.2 percentage points from a year ago
The company nudged its full-year margin target to the top of its prior range at 23.6%. Because the third quarter did the heavy lifting, the fourth quarter now needs a 24.9% margin by our math, down from the 25.5% the old plan required. That smaller step makes the full-year profit target much safer.
What to watch: the government incentive footnote in the third-quarter filing. Last quarter, $22 million of government grants quietly supplied most of the margin beat, so the filing will show whether cost cuts or grants drove the lower overhead.
China Stopped Dragging Down Company Growth
Beijing placed Illumina on its Unreliable Entities List in early 2025, which restricted instrument sales in Greater China and forced the company to report growth outside the region to show its true pace. In the third quarter, the gap between total underlying sales growth and underlying growth outside China almost vanished. Total underlying sales rose 4.8%, while sales outside China grew 4.7%.
China took 2.3 percentage points off company revenue growth in the first quarter and 1.6 points in the second, but it added 0.1 points in the third as the business lapped last year's drop. The regulatory restriction remains in place "due to our inclusion on Chinaโs Unreliable Entities List", Illumina said, but the region is now small enough that it no longer holds back total growth.
What to watch: Greater China dollar revenue in the quarterly filing. Stabilization near $55 million a quarter would confirm that the region has found a floor and will not hurt 2027 growth.
Service and Multi-Omics Revenue Grew 17%
Illumina is expanding beyond DNA reading into multi-omics, the study of proteins and cell data alongside genes, and bought proteomics specialist SomaLogic in January 2026. Chief executive Jacob Thaysen said the company is "laying the foundation for AI to transform our understanding of human biology and improve patient outcomes." Service and other revenue, where data products and service contracts sit, rose 16.6% from a year ago to $183 million.
Acquisitions added 2.4 percentage points to company revenue growth in the quarter, up from 2.1 points in the second quarter and 1.7 points in the first. Meanwhile, product revenue excluding the $37 million customer tariff credit grew 6.0% to $983 million by our math. The faster growth in services and acquisitions shows the new businesses are adding to the top line.
What to watch: any dollar breakout of SomaLogic and BioInsight, Illumina's AI data unit, on the conference call. Without a separate revenue line, investors cannot verify whether new products can add the promised 1 to 2 points of growth in 2027.
Positives this quarter didn't test
"In the third quarter, healthy clinical demand and robust NovaSeq X placements drove results above our guidance," chief executive Jacob Thaysen said. The earnings release gave no numbers for either driver, leaving three standing positives to be checked on the call and in the filing.
- NovaSeq X instrument placements: shipments of Illumina's newest high-throughput sequencer ran at 80 to 100 per quarter over the past three quarters; the call will show if placements stayed above 85.
- Clinical volume conversion to NovaSeq X: stood at 78% in the second quarter toward a year-end goal of 80% to 85%; prepared remarks will update the percentage.
- Remaining performance obligations: contracted future revenue stood at $1.0 billion last quarter; the quarterly filing will show whether the backlog grew.
๐ป Bear Case
Raised Outlook Still Points to Slowing Growth
"Based on continued momentum, we are raising our full year revenue and earnings guidance," chief executive Jacob Thaysen said. Illumina lifted its full-year revenue forecast excluding tariff refunds by $30 million at the middle of the range, to $4.65 billion. However, it beat the third-quarter midpoint by $16 million, so only $14 million of the raise applies to the fourth quarter.
- Third-quarter revenue growth excluding tariff refunds: 7.6% from a year ago, down from 9.5% in the second quarter
- Fourth-quarter revenue growth implied by the full-year outlook: 6.4% at the middle of the range by our math, despite an extra 14th calendar week
- Fourth-quarter underlying growth floor outside China: 3.9% implied by the unchanged full-year target of greater than 5% by our math
The company left its full-year underlying growth targets unchanged at greater than 4% overall and greater than 5% outside China. Because underlying sales outside China already grew 5.4% over the first nine months, holding the full-year floor at 5% does not support a step-up toward management's high-single-digit target for 2027.
What to watch: the initial 2027 revenue outlook when fourth-quarter results arrive in February. A forecast below 7% underlying growth outside China would mean the newly placed sequencers are not lifting total growth as promised.
Risks this quarter didn't answer
Five standing concerns from prior quarters could not be tested because the earnings release omits segment breakdowns and footnote details that live in the conference call and quarterly filing.
- Clinical versus research chemical sales: clinical consumables growth slowed from 20% to 15% last quarter while research fell 7%; the call will show whether clinical demand slowed for a second quarter.
- Old NovaSeq 6000 fleet retirements: 1,360 older machines were still running at year-end; the call will test whether customers are turning them off as new machines ramp.
- Competitor pricing pressure: rivals claim $100 to $150 genomes ahead of 2027 product launches; the call will show if Illumina is cutting prices on chemical kits.
- Memory and freight cost inflation: management previously flagged higher component and shipping costs without sizing them; the filing will show their gross margin drag.
- GRAIL shareholder lawsuits: a California state class action was certified in May; the filing's legal note will update case progress and legal fees.
๐ Other Themes
Tariff Refunds Added $42 Million to Profit
Following court rulings against U.S. emergency tariffs, Illumina booked expected refunds consisting "primarily of a $79 million benefit recognized as a reduction to cost of revenue in Q3 2026" and "a reduction to revenue of $37 million for the portion of tariff refunds that we expect to credit to customers". This one-off lowered reported revenue growth to 4.2% while lifting GAAP gross margin to 73.5%.
๐ฒ Other KPIs
Free cash flow โ operating cash flow minus property and equipment purchases โ rose 49.4% from a year ago and more than doubled from $162 million in the second quarter. Operating cash flow climbed to $419 million from $284 million a year ago on higher profit and lower receivables, while capital spending stayed low at $41 million.
Inventory on the balance sheet rose 18.3% from $564 million at the end of 2025 and 13.1% from $590 million a year ago, outpacing the 7.6% growth in revenue excluding tariff refunds. The sequencing group has built stock over the past three quarters to support NovaSeq X instrument shipments and newly acquired SomaLogic products.
Total debt fell by $200 million from $1,989 million at year-end and the second quarter. The diagnostics company eliminated its $499 million current debt portion while adding $299 million to long-term debt, contributing to a $223 million financing cash outflow in the quarter alongside $1,337 million of cash and short-term investments.
๐ฎ Guidance
Raised. The middle of the range moved up $30 million, to 7.1% growth from a year ago by our math. That leaves $1.233 billion for the fourth quarter, or 6.4% growth against 7.6% in the third quarter. It is the third raise this year: +$20M, +$50M, +$30M.
Unchanged. The plan still calls for sales from businesses owned a year ago, excluding currency and tariff refunds, to grow more than 4% this year. Because the first nine months already delivered 4.2% growth and the third quarter ran at 4.8%, the company has already cleared this floor unless fourth-quarter demand drops.
Unchanged. Illumina kept its floor of greater than 5% underlying sales growth outside Greater China after raising it from 2%โ4% last quarter. With the first nine months at 5.4% and the third quarter at 4.7%, the full-year floor allows fourth-quarter growth to slow as low as 3.9% by our math.
Raised to the top of the prior range. The plan calls for a 23.6% operating margin for the full year, up 0.5 percentage points from 2025. By our math, that leaves a 24.9% margin for the fourth quarter, down slightly from 25.0% in the third quarter.
Raised. The middle of the range moved up $0.075 to $5.425 per share, or 12.1% growth for the year by our math. That leaves $1.50 to $1.55 for the fourth quarter, up 13.0% from a year ago at the midpoint. It is the third raise this year: +$0.10, +$0.125, +$0.075.
โ Key Questions
How fast did clinical and research consumables grow in Q3?
The release omitted the market split for sequencing chemicals. Last quarter, clinical consumables growth slowed from 20% to 15% outside China while research fell 7%, so the third-quarter rate determines whether the core clinical engine is holding its mid-teens pace.
How many NovaSeq X instruments did Illumina place in Q3?
Chief executive Jacob Thaysen cited strong placements without giving a number. After three quarters of 80 to 100 shipments, investors need the exact count and how many went to new clinical capacity versus replacing older NovaSeq 6000 machines.
Why hold the underlying growth outlook after a third-quarter beat?
Illumina raised its dollar revenue forecast by $30 million at the midpoint but left its underlying growth floor outside China at greater than 5%. Management should explain whether fourth-quarter underlying growth is actually slowing below the 4.7% third-quarter rate.
Did government grants help lift the Q3 operating margin?
Operating margin excluding one-offs and tariff refunds beat the 24% target by a full point as overhead fell. In the second quarter, $22 million of government incentives quietly supplied most of the beat, so the third-quarter grant total matters.
