Himax Technologies (HIMX) Q3 2026 earnings review
Himax third-quarter profit beats plan, but Chinese car orders drop
Himax Technologies, a Taiwanese designer of screen chips for cars, phones and televisions, saw its spring restocking wave break in October. Third-quarter revenue rose 9% from the second quarter to $247 million and profit beat the company's plan on lower research costs. Then Chinese panel makers cut their orders after the October holidays, so chief executive Jordan Wu expects fourth-quarter sales to drop by roughly a quarter.
| Revenue | $246.8M +9% from last quarter (+11% vs 2024) |
|---|---|
| Gross margin | 34.2% up from 33.1% last quarter |
| Profit per diluted share | 10.7 cents outlook was 8.0 to 10.0 cents |
| Fourth-quarter revenue outlook | Down 22% to 26% from the third quarter |
โ๏ธ Verdict: ๐ด Bearish
The story got worse because the two-quarter rebound in car display chips turned out to be temporary inventory building tied to Chinese vehicle exports. When China cut electric-vehicle export tax rebates in October and European trade barriers tightened, carmakers stopped ordering standard display drivers. One bright spot: specialized car timing chips and large-screen controllers are still growing, which should keep gross margin near 34% during the fourth-quarter slump.
The question now is whether Himax's new products can grow fast enough in 2027 to offset cyclical swings and upcoming factory price increases on older chip lines. Either data-center optical connectors, Alibaba smart glasses and car timing chips turn into major revenue streams next year, or the business stays stuck in start-and-stop car inventory cycles. First-quarter 2027 orders and gross margins will show which force wins.
๐ Bull Case
Car Timing Controllers Grow Through the Slump
While standard car screen chips are falling, Himax's newer cabin electronics keep growing. Timing controllers (Tcon), the chips that coordinate image data and screen backlighting, now bring in over 10% of company revenue, with car models making up more than half of that.
- Fourth-quarter car Tcon outlook: up low teens from the third quarter, its third straight quarterly gain
- Full-year 2026 car Tcon sales: on track to grow over 40% from last year
- Large-screen touch and driver chips (LTDI): set to grow single digits in the fourth quarter and pass 5% of total sales
These specialized chips resist the wider car slowdown because automakers are putting bigger, curved screens into new models and need local dimming to control contrast. Himax also started shipping timing chips to a major US technology company "for its robotaxi offering" and put its combined driver-and-timing chip into production for a global robotics brand.
What to watch: non-driver revenue in the fourth quarter, which Himax expects to stay flat or dip slightly. Holding near $51 million while total sales drop by a quarter would push non-driver share toward 27% of the business.
Alibaba Put WiseEye Chips Into Smart Glasses
WiseEye, Himax's low-power artificial intelligence processor and camera sensor for battery-powered devices, won a second major wearable customer in two quarters. Alibaba chose the chip for its Qwen Glasses to run constant visual sensing inside the frame while using only a few milliwatts of power.
The company is also moving its optical and sensing tools into cars and hospitals. A global technology company picked Himax's wafer-level optics (WLO), which are miniature lenses etched onto silicon wafers, to "enable its advanced optical sensing solution to support autonomous driving". In China, a swallowable medical camera using WiseEye passed Class III regulatory review and enters mass production in the fourth quarter.
What to watch: when Himax begins breaking out WiseEye and optical sensing sales in dollars inside its non-driver segment. Until those figures appear, investors cannot tell how much revenue these wearable and medical wins add.
Lower Research Share Lifted Operating Profit
Himax earned 10.7 cents per share in the third quarter, beating its 8.0 to 10.0 cent plan even after booking $11.9 million in annual staff bonuses. Operating margin rose 9.5 percentage points from a year ago to 9.2%, and by our math reached 14.0% before the yearly bonus charge.
Two things drove the improvement: gross margin rose 4.1 percentage points from a year ago to 34.2% on a richer mix of car timing chips, and research and development costs (spending on chip design and engineering) fell by 4.6 percentage points of revenue to 19.0%. Overhead and sales costs also shrank by a combined 0.9 percentage points of revenue.
What to watch: fourth-quarter operating expenses as revenue drops by roughly a quarter. With the annual bonus now past, keeping quarterly research and overhead spending near $50 million will determine whether Himax can stay profitable at lower sales volumes.
๐ป Bear Case
Chinese Car Chip Orders Reversed After October
For two quarters, Himax's recovery rested on panel makers buying car display chips after the Lunar New Year. Right after China's National Day holidays in early October, chief executive Jordan Wu saw "a sudden and sizable decline in demand among the customers that had purchased aggressively in prior quarters".
- Fourth-quarter revenue outlook: down 22% to 26% from the third quarter, to about $188 million at the middle of the range by our math
- Full-year 2026 car chip growth target: trimmed to about 10%, down from double-digit growth after rising 16% across the first nine months
- Implied fourth-quarter car chip sales: down about 8% from a year ago by our math
Wu called the drop "abrupt, short-term order adjustments by certain customers", and noted that suppliers serving carmakers outside China kept their orders steady. Yet the cut wipes out two quarters of top-line gains in a single period, proving that the spring and summer rebound was inventory restocking rather than lasting end-market demand.
What to watch: first-quarter 2027 revenue outlook on the February call. A second straight drop would show that unsold cars in export channels are taking more than one quarter to clear.
Chip Factories Are Raising Prices for 2027
Himax has defended its profitability this year by passing higher manufacturing costs on to buyers, lifting gross margin to 34.2% in the third quarter and planning for flat to slightly higher margins in the fourth. That pricing power faces a harder test next year as data-center artificial intelligence demand uses up older chipmaking equipment.
Because power and optical chips for data centers run on the same mature factory lines as display drivers, "foundries, as well as packaging and testing providers, including those in China, have recently announced significant price increases for 2027", the company said. Himax has "fully secured capacity commitments for 2027 from key suppliers", and plans to share the higher bills with its customers.
Passing costs along was easier in the second and third quarters when panel makers were rushing to rebuild stock. Asking Chinese car suppliers to pay more in 2027 while they are cutting orders and clearing extra inventory will put pressure on margins.
What to watch: first-quarter 2027 gross margin outlook once the new 2027 foundry rates take effect. A drop back toward 31% would show that Himax is absorbing the factory price increases itself.
Trade Barriers Hit Chinese Car Exports
China produces most of Himax's revenue, and Chinese carmakers leaned on foreign buyers this year to make up for weak demand at home. Citing industry data for the first nine months of 2026, Himax noted that domestic sales of locally made cars in China fell 22.4% from a year ago while vehicle exports jumped 65.8%.
That export outlet is now narrowing. Himax pointed to "mounting pressure from various countries, including the European Union, to tighten trade barriers on Chinese vehicle imports", alongside Beijing's October move to announce "reductions in export tax rebates for new energy vehicles". Those policy shifts hit the exact export programs that drove Himax's summer chip orders.
What to watch: China's share of total revenue in the fourth quarter, down from 73% in the second quarter. A steeper drop in China sales than in rest-of-world sales will show how much trade rules are hurting demand.
Data-Center Optics Still Wait on Customers
Himax wants investors to value its co-packaged optics (CPO) โ tiny optical connectors built with partner FOCI to move data between artificial intelligence server chips using light instead of copper wires. FOCI's board just approved NT$3.33 billion (about $100 million) in capital spending "for the expansion of both fab space and manufacturing equipment", and Himax expects meaningful sales in 2027.
Yet the schedule has slipped before, from mass production in 2026 to readiness in 2026, and Himax still gives no revenue figure for its current engineering shipments. In its own words, "the timing of mass production is ultimately a call to be made by the Companyโs end customers", and fourth-quarter non-driver sales are set to be flat to slightly down even as optical shipments grow.
What to watch: whether management names a firm quarter for commercial mass production or gives a 2027 dollar target on the next call. Another quarter of engineering runs without a customer launch date would push the revenue payoff toward 2028.
Risks this quarter didn't answer
Three standing concerns from prior quarters received no quantitative update in the third-quarter release.
- Car screen shift to OLED: management touted new organic light-emitting diode (OLED) partnerships in Korea and China, but gave no numbers on whether OLED panels โ which do not need local-dimming timing chips โ reduce Himax's dollar content per screen compared with liquid-crystal displays.
- Exact car revenue in dollars: Himax stated only that automotive accounts for most of its revenue and grew 16% over nine months, withholding the dollar figure it used to publish in 2024.
- US surveillance module ramp: the WiseGuard camera module scheduled to enter mass production for a US security customer in late 2026 was not mentioned in the release.
๐ Other Themes
Asset Sale Will Pad Fourth-Quarter Profit
Himax is on track to close the sale of its stake in an equity-method investee in the fourth quarter. The deal will add a one-time gain of $23 million to $24 million before tax, or $19 million to $20 million after tax (roughly 11 cents per share by our math). Management left that windfall out of its 4.5 to 6.5 cent fourth-quarter profit outlook.
๐ฒ Other KPIs
Stockpiles rose 5.5% from last quarter and 16.3% from a year ago, marking the highest level in seven quarters. Himax has been building stock on purpose to guard against longer factory lead times, and inventory write-downs fell to $1.4 million from $2.7 million a year ago, but the abrupt fourth-quarter order drop leaves the company holding more unsold chips.
Unpaid customer bills grew 3.7% from the second quarter and 13.8% from a year ago, trailing behind the 23.9% jump in year-over-year sales. Days sales outstanding โ the average time customers take to pay โ held steady at 93 days compared with last quarter, up from 87 days a year ago.
Operating cash flow minus $3.9 million of equipment purchases reached $20.0 million, or 8.1% of revenue by our math, up from $13.2 million last quarter and $0.4 million a year ago. Cash generation improved even though the Taiwanese chip designer paid out $11.9 million in cash bonuses during September.
Liquid funds dipped from $298.7 million in June as Himax paid its annual $44.6 million cash dividend in July, but stayed above the $278.2 million held a year ago. Diluted share count was unchanged at 174.4 million shares, with no buybacks during the quarter.
๐ฎ Guidance
New. The plan points to about $187.5 million of revenue at the middle of the range by our math, down 24% from the third quarter and down 7.7% from a year ago. Large display drivers should rise low teens and timing chips high single digits, but double-digit drops in car, phone and tablet drivers pull the total down.
New. After reaching 34.2% in the third quarter, profitability should hold near or slightly above that mark even as revenue drops by a quarter. Higher-margin car timing controllers and large-screen touch chips are growing while lower-margin standard car and phone drivers shrink.
New. The middle of the range is 5.5 cents, down 49% from the third quarter on lower sales volume, though up 53% from 3.6 cents a year ago. It excludes the roughly 11-cent after-tax gain from the upcoming investee sale. Himax has beaten its profit midpoint four quarters in a row by an average of 28%; if the pattern holds, profit would land near 7.1 cents by our math.
Cut. Himax trimmed its full-year car chip outlook from double-digit growth to roughly 10% after Chinese panel makers scaled back fourth-quarter orders. Because car chip sales grew 16% from a year ago across the first nine months, the new full-year target leaves fourth-quarter car chip revenue falling about 8% from a year ago by our math.
โ Key Questions
What are the optical engineering sales and 2027 customer commitments?
Partner FOCI just approved $100 million for factory space and equipment, yet Himax still does not disclose revenue from its optical engineering runs. Investors need the current quarterly sales figure and whether any data-center customer has locked in 2027 mass-production dates.
How does shifting to OLED change dollar content per car?
Himax dominates liquid-crystal car screens that require local-dimming timing chips and multiple large-screen drivers, whereas organic light-emitting diode (OLED) screens do not need local dimming. Management has not stated whether an OLED car screen pays Himax more or less than a comparable liquid-crystal screen.
Why withhold the exact dollar revenue for the automotive business?
Automotive brings in more than half of total sales and drives the entire fourth-quarter drop, but Himax stopped publishing the exact quarterly dollar figure after 2024. Providing the dollar split between car display drivers and car timing chips would let investors track the downturn accurately.
Which investee is being sold and does it lift bonuses?
The fourth-quarter sale of an equity-method investee will bring in a $23 million to $24 million pre-tax gain, almost matching half of the company's nine-month operating profit. Management has not named the buyer, the asset, or whether this one-off gain will trigger extra staff bonus charges.
Did the US security camera module enter mass production?
Last quarter management said its WiseGuard sensing module would begin mass production for a US surveillance customer toward the end of 2026. The third-quarter release highlighted smart glasses, door locks and medical capsules, but omitted any update on the US security contract.
