Garrett Motion (GTX) Q3 2026 earnings review
Garrett Motion's industrial sales jump, while its car business shrinks
Garrett Motion, a maker of turbochargers for vehicles and industrial generators, expanded its profit margins as heavy-equipment demand offset a drop in car parts. Third-quarter sales grew 3% to $930 million, while operating profit margin excluding one-offs climbed to 16.3% on strong industrial and truck demand. Chief executive Olivier Rabiller kept the middle of the full-year outlook unchanged, which by our math leaves sales growth slowing to 2% in the fourth quarter.
| Net sales | $930M +3% from a year ago |
|---|---|
| Operating margin, excluding one-offs | 16.3% +1.6 percentage points from a year ago |
| Commercial vehicle and industrial sales | +23% from a year ago, excluding currency |
| Full-year outlook | Unchanged middle of the range: $3.8B sales, $580M profit |
โ๏ธ Verdict: ๐ข Bullish
The story got better because the shift toward high-margin industrial and commercial equipment accelerated fast enough to lift company-wide profitability. Commercial and industrial sales jumped 23% and funded a new $250 million share buyback plan for 2027. One caution: gasoline car turbocharger sales shrank 5% on weak demand in China, and the unchanged full-year plan points to a fourth-quarter margin drop.
The question now is whether the implied fourth-quarter margin drop to 13.8% reflects normal management caution or a real pause in industrial shipments. Either Garrett beats its full-year target as it did last year, or falling Chinese gasoline car sales drag profitability back down. Fourth-quarter results and the 2027 outlook will settle it.
๐ Bull Case
Commercial and Industrial Sales Jumped 23%
Garrett Motion makes turbochargers that boost engine power for cars, trucks, and large industrial generators. Its commercial vehicle and industrial business is its main growth engine, although critics warn that demand for data-center backup generators runs in boom-and-bust cycles. This quarter, the division's sales rose 23% excluding currency swings, accelerating from 10% last quarter.
- Commercial vehicle and industrial sales: up 23% from a year ago
- Aftermarket replacement parts sales: up 6% excluding currency effects
- Industrial demand: "Continued growth in industrial above previous expectations"
The company credited "strong demand in North America and China for industrial and off-highway applications" alongside higher truck demand in Asia. Replacement parts also grew 6% excluding currency swings, so industrial and truck buyers are offsetting weaker passenger car sales.
What to watch: full-year industrial turbocharger dollar sales in the fourth-quarter report. Hitting the $200 million target management set last quarter would prove that generator orders are turning into deliveries on schedule.
Product Mix and Efficiency Lifted Profit Margins
Garrett has argued that selling more industrial and replacement parts lifts its overall profit margin because those products earn more than passenger car parts. In the third quarter, operating profit excluding one-offs (Adjusted EBIT) rose 14% to $152 million, lifting the margin by 1.6 percentage points to 16.3%.
The cost of making the products fell by 1.5 percentage points of revenue to 77.8%, while overhead stayed near 6.2%. Favorable product mix added $21 million to operating profit, pricing net of inflation added $19 million, and factory efficiency added $18 million. Those gains easily covered $18 million in commodity and shipping inflation, proving the shift toward heavy equipment is raising profitability.
What to watch: operating profit margin in the fourth quarter. Staying near 15.5% or higher would show that industrial mix gains are permanent rather than a one-quarter spike.
Buybacks and Debt Paydowns Boost Per-Share Profit
The Swiss-headquartered group aims to return three-quarters of its cash flow to shareholders while paying down debt. In the third quarter, Garrett spent $57 million buying back its own shares, doubling the $28 million it spent in the second quarter. The board also approved a new $250 million share buyback program for 2027 and paid off $50 million of term loan debt early in October.
Because buybacks shrank the diluted share count by 6.5% from a year ago, profit per share rose 34% to $0.51 on a 26% rise in net income. Debt minus unrestricted cash fell to $1,173 million by our math, down from $1,228 million in June, cutting quarterly interest costs by $2 million.
What to watch: how much of the remaining $78 million buyback allowance Garrett spends in the fourth quarter. Using most of it before year-end would keep share count reductions above 6% going into 2027.
๐ป Bear Case
Gasoline Turbo Sales Dropped on China Weakness
Gasoline turbochargers for passenger cars are Garrett's largest product line, making up more than two-fifths of revenue. After growing 3% excluding currency swings in both the first and second quarters, gasoline sales fell 5% from a year ago in the third quarter.
The company blamed "demand softness in China", which outweighed new car program launches in Europe, Japan, Korea, and India. Overall lower sales volumes across the business reduced operating profit by $8 million compared with a year ago. Because passenger cars remain the company's biggest market, a downturn in gasoline engines drags total revenue growth down to 3% even when industrial sales boom.
What to watch: constant-currency gasoline sales growth in the fourth quarter. A second straight decline would show that electric vehicle competition and weak auto demand in China are outpacing Garrett's new contract wins.
Full-Year Plan Points to a Fourth-Quarter Slowdown
"With this continued momentum we reaffirm our 2026 mid-point outlook, offsetting unfavorable foreign exchange, and remain focused on delivering long-term value for our shareholders," chief executive Olivier Rabiller said. Garrett narrowed its full-year ranges while keeping the middle of the revenue plan at $3.8 billion and operating profit excluding one-offs at $580 million.
Keeping those targets after a strong third quarter leaves a weak fourth quarter by our math. Subtracting nine-month results from the middle of the full-year plan leaves $909 million in fourth-quarter sales (up 2% from a year ago) and $125 million in operating profit excluding one-offs. That implies a 13.8% operating margin in the final quarter, down 2.5 percentage points from the 16.3% just delivered.
What to watch: fourth-quarter operating profit against the $125 million implied by the middle of the plan. Landing near $125 million would mean third-quarter margins were temporary, while beating the top end of the $590 million full-year range would prove the plan was cautious.
Risks this quarter didn't answer
Several standing questions around new zero-emission products, tariff pass-throughs, and share buyback counterparties received no dollar figures in the third-quarter release.
- Zero-emission and cooling sales: Garrett "Secured a production award for industrial E-Cooling compressor in Asia" for 2027 production, but still gives no revenue or order backlog for electric powertrains or cooling compressors.
- Industrial generator dollar revenue: management did not update the $80 million first-half figure, leaving the check on its $200 million full-year goal for the fourth-quarter report.
- Tariff pass-through swings: lower import tariffs cut cost of goods sold by $19 million while reducing customer price recoveries; the quarterly filing will show the exact revenue impact.
- Related-party stock purchases: the release does not state whether any of the $57 million third-quarter buyback came from major shareholder Oaktree; the quarterly filing's footnote will disclose any related-party trades.
๐ Other Themes
Car Production Slump and Weaker Euro Assumptions
Garrett sets its annual plan using global auto production and currency assumptions. The company still expects global light-vehicle production to fall 2% to 4% this year, with battery-electric cars taking 19% of the market, while commercial vehicle production grows 1% to 2%. Unfavorable currency swings cut third-quarter operating profit by $7 million, and management lowered its full-year euro assumption from $1.16 to $1.15.
๐ฒ Other KPIs
Cash flow after capital spending and financing adjustments rose 27.1% from a year ago, reaching 14.6% of sales. That marks a step-up from $122 million in the second quarter and $49 million in the first. Higher operating profit, $8 million lower cash taxes, and $5 million lower cash interest drove the gain.
Money owed by customers rose 13.9% since December to $801 million, while inventory rose 13.9% to $386 million, outpacing 7.4% nine-month sales growth. In the third quarter, receivables fell from $836 million in June while inventory climbed from $350 million, creating an $8 million working-capital drag on operating cash flow.
Diesel turbocharger sales rose 5% as reported and 6% excluding currency swings, matching the second quarter's 6% constant-currency pace and up from 3% in the first quarter. Strong demand for light commercial vans and pickup trucks in Europe, the Americas, and India supported the line.
๐ฎ Guidance
Unchanged at the middle of the range. Garrett narrowed the band by $50 million on each side around $3.8 billion (6% reported growth). By our math, that leaves $909 million for the fourth quarter, or 2.0% growth from a year ago vs 3.1% in Q3. After two $50 million raises in Q1 and Q2, management held the target as weaker euro assumptions offset industrial gains.
Unchanged at the middle of the range. The turbocharger maker tightened the band by 1 percentage point on each side around 4% growth excluding currency swings, matching the 2% to 6% range it set in the first quarter. Nine-month sales excluding currency swings are up 5%, so the full-year midpoint requires a slower fourth quarter.
Unchanged at the middle of the range. Management narrowed the band by $10 million on each end around $580 million (a 15.3% margin), pausing after raises of $15 million in Q1 and $20 million in Q2. By our math, that leaves $125 million for Q4, or a 13.8% margin vs 16.3% in Q3.
Trimmed slightly at the middle of the range. Tightening the band lowered the middle by $0.5 million to $344.5 million, following raises of $15 million in Q1 and $15 million in Q2. By our math, that leaves $51.5 million of net income for Q4, down from $97 million in Q3 and $84 million a year ago.
Unchanged at the middle of the range. The US and Swiss group narrowed the band by $25 million on each side around $480 million, after raises of $10 million in Q1 and $15.5 million in Q2. By our math, that leaves $102 million for Q4, compared with $135 million in Q3 and $99 million in Q4 last year.
Unchanged at the middle of the range. The band tightened by $25 million on both ends around $430 million, after raises of $10 million in Q1 and $15 million in Q2. By our math, the middle of the range leaves $123 million for Q4, compared with $136 million in Q3 and $139 million a year ago.
Raised by 0.1 percentage points of sales. The engineering budget returned to the 4.2% share of revenue set at the start of the year, after dipping to 4.1% in the second quarter. In the third quarter, research, development, and engineering costs rose by $6 million from a year ago.
โ Key Questions
Why does the plan imply a 13.8% fourth-quarter margin?
Operating margin excluding one-offs reached 16.3% in Q3, yet the unchanged $580 million full-year midpoint leaves $125 million on $909 million of Q4 sales (13.8%). Is management building in caution, or do industrial shipments and factory efficiency drop in Q4?
Where do industrial turbocharger dollar sales stand after Q3?
Management said industrial sales exceeded expectations in Q3, after reporting over $80 million in H1 and targeting $200 million for the full year. What was the Q3 dollar total, and how much of the fourth-quarter schedule is already shipped?
When will Garrett disclose zero-emission and cooling order backlogs?
Garrett won an Asian industrial E-Cooling compressor award in Q3 and plans to start production in 2027, while targeting $1 billion in zero-emission sales by 2030. Without revenue or backlog figures, investors cannot test progress toward that goal.
How bad is the passenger car slowdown in China?
Gasoline turbocharger sales fell 5% in Q3 after growing 3% in H1, which management blamed on weak demand in China. Is Garrett losing share to local electric-vehicle makers, or are customers delaying specific engine programs?
