Genie Energy Ltd. (GNE) Q3 2026 earnings review

Genie Energy profit rebounds, but its customer base keeps shrinking

Genie Energy, which supplies electricity and natural gas to homes and small businesses, earned much higher profits even as its customer base shrank again. Revenue fell 8% from a year ago to $127 million, but operating profit climbed 72% to $13 million because calmer wholesale energy markets let retail gross margin rebound by 11 percentage points. Chief executive Michael Stein kept the full-year profit outlook unchanged, which by our math requires fourth-quarter Adjusted EBITDA to rise about 78% from a year ago at the middle of the range.

At a glance
Revenue$127.2M -8% from a year ago
Retail customer book (RCEs)337K -15% from a year ago
Adjusted EBITDA$13.7M +67% from a year ago
Full-year Adjusted EBITDA outlookUnchanged $32.5–40.0M (middle: +11%)

⚖️ Verdict: ⚪ Neutral

The story is unchanged because wider profit margins per customer and a shrinking customer base still pull in opposite directions. On the bright side, operating cash flow turned back into positive territory, and a new segment breakdown showed that operating solar arrays and energy brokerage earned $2 million in Adjusted EBITDA. The bad news: marketing and overhead spending jumped 26%, yet monthly customer churn rose again to 6.3% and total customers fell for a second straight quarter.

The question now is whether pricier sales channels are actually bringing in longer-lasting customers or if normal wholesale margins are merely masking a shrinking retail business. If the new channels work, monthly churn will drop and the meter count will stabilize; otherwise, the customer book will keep eroding even after last year's bulk municipal contract expirations pass. Fourth-quarter churn and net meter additions will tell.

Calmer Wholesale Markets Restored Retail Profit Margins

Genie Retail Energy (GRE), the main division that sells electricity and natural gas to homes and small businesses, relies on stable wholesale power prices to make money. A year ago, severe wholesale price swings squeezed its profit margins. This quarter, chief executive Michael Stein pointed to an "expansion of our gross margin to our long-term average under normalized market conditions" as wholesale markets calmed down.

  • Cost of revenues (what Genie pays for wholesale electricity and gas): 67.6% of sales, down 10.7 percentage points from 78.3% a year ago
  • Retail energy gross margin: 31.0%, up from 20.8% a year ago
  • Consolidated operating income: $12.7 million, up 72% from $7.4 million a year ago, lifting operating margin by 4.7 percentage points to 10.0%

Because the company paid much less for wholesale power while charging customers higher unit rates, gross profit rose $11.2 million even though total sales fell 8%. Unlike last quarter, when a $3.8 million investment gain and tax credits inflated net income, this quarter's $10.2 million profit came from core energy operations.

What to watch: retail energy gross margin in the fourth quarter. A reading near 30% during the early winter heating season would show that Genie can protect its spreads without relying on mild weather.

🟢 strengthening GROWTH

New Segment Split Shows Solar and Brokerage Profit

For the first time, Genie split its Genie Renewables (GREW) division in the earnings tables between established businesses and early-stage ventures. The established group comprises Diversegy, which advises businesses on buying energy, and Genie Solar, which owns solar power arrays. Those mature units generated $2.0 million in Adjusted EBITDA (earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, amortization and one-offs), up from $0.2 million a year ago.

Genie Solar brought its community solar arrays in Lansing and Perry, New York, into full operation, fulfilling management's promise from last quarter, and started a new project in Delhi, New York, for late 2027. Diversegy kept collecting commissions on existing contracts while signing new clients. That strength lifted total division gross margin to 58.5% from 41.3% and produced $0.8 million in operating profit even after startup losses.

What to watch: revenue growth for the established renewables group next quarter. Sales in that profitable group grew only 1.7% from a year ago to $6.0 million, so the business needs top-line gains to keep expanding profit.

🟢 new CASH

Third-Quarter Cash Generation Erased the First-Half Deficit

In the first six months of 2026, Genie burned $9.9 million in cash from operations as it paid down winter liabilities and bought inventory. By our math, the company generated $12.4 million of operating cash flow in the third quarter alone, pulling nine-month operating cash flow back into positive territory at $2.4 million. Capital spending was almost nil in the quarter at about $67 thousand by our math.

That cash inflow lifted cash, restricted cash and marketable securities by $9.5 million during the quarter to $213.8 million, against only $6.7 million of total debt. With cash flowing again, management stepped up share buybacks to $2.0 million (128 thousand shares), triple the $0.66 million spent in the second quarter, alongside $2.0 million in regular dividends.

What to watch: full-year operating cash flow in the fourth-quarter report. Positive cash generation during the winter inventory build would confirm that working capital swings have settled.

🔴🔴 persistent COMPETITION contradicts narrative

Higher Sales Spending Fails to Stop Customer Losses

Management has argued that shifting marketing toward pricier sales channels builds a more durable customer book because, as finance chief Avi Goldin said, "meters added through these channels typically have higher lifetime values". Genie measures its customer base in residential customer equivalents (RCEs), which represent the yearly power or gas use of a typical single-family home, and in individual utility meters.

  • Selling, general and administrative expenses (marketing and overhead): 22.4% of revenue ($28.5 million), up 6.1 percentage points from 16.3% ($22.6 million) a year ago
  • Monthly customer churn (the share of meters leaving each month): 6.3%, up from 5.9% last quarter and 5.1% a year ago
  • Customer book: 337 thousand RCEs and 351 thousand meters, down 8 thousand RCEs and 12 thousand meters from last quarter

The numbers cut against the higher-value argument. Genie signed 61 thousand gross new meters, up from 47 thousand a year ago, but Stein admitted that "That is slightly below the level we need to maintain our current customer base, given the current rate of churn, which reached 6.3% this quarter". By our math, 73 thousand meters left during the quarter, so higher marketing spending is not keeping customers longer.

What to watch: monthly churn and net meter additions in the fourth quarter. Now that last year's bulk municipal contract expirations have passed, another drop in total meters would prove that routine attrition is still outrunning the sales team.

🔴 persistent MARGIN

Full-Year Target Requires an Unusually Strong Fourth Quarter

Stein reiterated the full-year plan, saying "We expect to reach our 2026 guidance of $32.5 to $40.0 million in Adjusted EBITDA". Through the first nine months of 2026, Genie has earned $24.0 million in Adjusted EBITDA ($2.8 million in Q1, $7.5 million in Q2, and $13.7 million in Q3), compared with $25.6 million at the same point in 2025.

By our math, reaching the $36.25 million middle of the full-year range requires $12.25 million of Adjusted EBITDA in the fourth quarter, a 78% jump from the $6.9 million Genie earned in the fourth quarter of 2025. Even the $32.5 million bottom of the range requires $8.5 million, up 23% from a year ago, on a customer base that is 15% smaller.

Because the company leaves part of its expected customer power load unhedged, a winter cold snap that drives up wholesale electricity or gas prices would squeeze margins just as it did in early 2026. What to watch: fourth-quarter Adjusted EBITDA against the $8.5 million needed for the bottom of the target. Falling short would make this the second straight year Genie missed its initial annual profit plan.

🔴 persistent DISCLOSURE

Risks This Quarter Didn't Answer

Neither the earnings release nor the conference call — which ended with zero analyst questions — provided updates on four legal, supply and capital risks from prior filings.

  • BP Energy supply contract: the preferred supplier deal securing wholesale energy expires November 30, 2026; the quarterly Form 10-Q filing will show whether Genie renewed it.
  • European bankruptcy claims: the Lumo Finland estate has claimed 40 million euros against Genie's discontinued unit; the 10-Q legal footnote will show any change to the 2.5 million euro reserve.
  • State marketing lawsuits: variable-rate pricing lawsuits in New Jersey and Illinois received no mention; the 10-Q legal proceedings note will update their status.
  • Unrelated startup spending: management gave no figures for non-energy ventures like its autism therapy business; the 10-Q investment footnote will show any new cash committed.

Plastic Pallet Expansion Doubles Early-Stage Startup Losses

Genie is scaling Roded, its startup that recycles plastic waste into industrial pallets. Roded started a second line in Israel, plans a local factory that would triple capacity, and is ordering machinery for two US lines under the name Evercore Composites because management says they "have orders for all of our current output and are in the process of ordering machinery that should double our capacity by the third quarter of 2027". Early-stage revenue remained tiny at $0.4 million while operating losses doubled to $0.9 million.

🔮 Guidance

FY26 Adjusted EBITDA $32.5–40.0 million
🠆 unchanged from $32.5–40.0 million
⇗ accelerating

Unchanged. Management kept the full-year target at $32.5 to $40.0 million, where the middle of the range calls for 11.2% growth over 2025's $32.6 million. By our math, after earning $24.0 million in the first nine months, the plan leaves $8.5 to $16.0 million for Q4 ($12.25 million at the middle, up 77.5% from 4Q25's $6.9 million). Genie cut this target from $40–50 million in Q1 after missing its initial 2025 plan.

❓ Key Questions

Has Genie renewed its BP Energy supply deal?

The preferred supplier agreement with BP Energy, which secures wholesale power and gas against pledged customer receivables, expires on November 30, 2026. Any change in collateral terms could tie up part of Genie's $213.8 million cash pile.

Why is churn rising while acquisition spending climbs?

Selling, general and administrative costs rose 26% from a year ago because Genie shifted toward pricier sales channels that management says bring higher-value customers, yet monthly churn has climbed for three straight quarters to 6.3%.

How much capital will the two Roded factories require?

Genie is ordering machinery to double plastic pallet capacity in Israel, submitting plans for a larger Israeli plant to triple capacity, and ordering two US production lines, but management has not disclosed the total capital bill or expected returns.

What is the advance payment balance at Diversegy?

Contract liabilities from customer advance payments at the renewables division grew 56% from a year ago in the second quarter while revenue stayed flat. The third-quarter release did not include the balance, which will show whether brokerage cash still leads reported sales.
