Globe Life (GL) Q3 2026 earnings review
Globe Life cuts its 2026 profit plan on health claims
Globe Life, a seller of basic life and supplemental health insurance, grew premiums while medical claims reduced its profit. Total premium revenue rose 7%, but operating profit dollars excluding one-offs fell 4% and per-share profit barely moved because share buybacks reduced the share count. The company cut its 2026 profit plan after $23 million of unexpected health claims at its United American division, while setting a 2027 outlook for 7% per-share growth.
| Total premium revenue | $1.31B +6.5% from a year ago |
|---|---|
| Operating profit per share, excluding one-offs | $4.84 +0.6% from a year ago |
| 2026 operating profit outlook | Cut $0.25 middle of the range: $15.50 (+6.8%) |
| 2027 operating profit outlook | $16.10–17.10 new; +7.1% at the middle of the range |
⚖️ Verdict: 🔴 Bearish
The story got worse because the division driving health sales swung into a loss and forced a full-year profit cut after three straight raises. United American's health sales nearly doubled, yet severe claims at its Evry group health unit and a government Medicare billing delay pushed the division into the red. In the core life business, American Income's agent count slipped again from last quarter and direct online sales fell 12%.
The question now is whether United American's fast health growth builds a second profit source or just adds low-margin policies that hurt profitability. One view is that Medicare price increases and scale at Evry will restore margins in 2027; the other is that medical cost inflation will keep outrunning rate filings. Fourth-quarter health margins at United American will show whether the claims pressure was a one-quarter blip.
🐂 Bull Case
Liberty National and Family Heritage Grow Steadily
Globe Life sells life and supplemental health policies through five divisions, and two of its exclusive agencies kept expanding while its largest division stalled. Liberty National, an agency focused on life and supplemental health in the southern United States, grew its average sales force by 9% from a year ago to 4,187 agents. That larger team lifted Liberty National's net life sales — new yearly premiums issued after early cancellations — by 7% to $26.0 million.
Family Heritage, which sells supplemental health policies to families and small businesses, increased its health underwriting profit by 12% to $56.8 million, or 44% of its premium revenue. Its health premiums rose 8% to $128.6 million and net health sales grew 5%, showing that supplemental health outside the group and Medicare lines still earns wide margins.
What to watch: Liberty National's producing agent count in the fourth quarter. Holding above 4,180 agents would confirm that its recruiting gains are sticking even as the flagship American Income agency shrinks.
Buybacks Rise Again and 2027 Plan Points Higher
The Texas insurer uses its steady premium cash flows to buy back stock every quarter, shrinking the share count by 4.6% from a year ago to 78.2 million diluted shares. That reduction turned a 3.9% drop in third-quarter operating profit dollars into a 0.6% gain per share. Globe Life spent $185 million to buy 1.1 million shares this quarter and raised its full-year repurchase target by $65 million at the middle of the range, to $725–775 million.
The company also issued its first profit outlook for 2027, calling for $16.10 to $17.10 in operating profit per share, excluding one-offs. That represents 7.1% growth at the middle of the range over the lowered 2026 plan, signalling that the company expects this quarter's health claims spike to fade next year.
What to watch: fourth-quarter interest expense alongside share repurchases. Debt interest rose 5% this quarter to $37.8 million after the company borrowed more earlier this year, and rising interest bills would eat into the per-share benefit of the buybacks.
Positives this quarter didn't test
Two standing drivers held their ground in the third-quarter release without new detail from the conference call.
- Favourable mortality and the annual reserve review: Globe Life updates its long-term policy assumptions every third quarter, recording a $120.5 million pre-tax gain ($96.4 million in life and $24.1 million in health) that landed right at the middle of its $110–130 million target.
- Administrative cost control and artificial intelligence tools: administrative expenses held steady at 7.3% of premium revenue, matching last year and the full-year plan, though the release gave no update on agent training software.
🐻 Bear Case
Health Claims Force a Full-Year Profit Cut
United American, Globe Life's independent agency selling Medicare Supplement and group health cover, is both the company's fastest revenue driver and its biggest margin problem. Its health premiums jumped 29% from a year ago to $219.3 million, and its net health sales nearly doubled to $47.7 million. That surge pushed total health premiums up 16%, but it also lifted United American to 49% of the health book, by our math.
Instead of adding profit, United American swung from a $16.1 million underwriting gain a year ago to a $6.4 million loss, or minus 3% of its premiums. Globe Life cut its 2026 operating profit outlook by $0.25 at the middle of the range, saying the cut was "due to two items impacting the results at our United American General Agency division, rather than a fundamental change in our underlying core business".
- Evry group health business: an underwriting loss of about $16 million from severe claims
- Medicare Supplement claims: about $7 million in extra prior-period claims after a government processing delay
- Health benefits expense: rose 1.9 percentage points of health premium from a year ago, to 60.9% by our math
- Total benefits expense: rose 2.7 percentage points of total revenue from a year ago, to 43.5% by our math
Even if both items are added back, United American's health margin was about 7.6% of premium by our math, still down from 9% a year ago. Rapid sales in a unit losing money on claims cut total health underwriting margin from 28% of premium to 26%, missing the company's 29–32% third-quarter target.
What to watch: United American's health underwriting margin in the fourth quarter. A reading below 7% of premium would show that high medical cost trends are outrunning the company's price increases beyond the one-time government delay.
Core Agency Hiring and Direct Sales Stall
Life insurance still provides 80% of Globe Life's underwriting profit, and its two main life channels are struggling to bring in new business. American Income, the company's largest exclusive agency, saw its average sales force slip to 11,331 agents, down 7% from a year ago and down 60 agents from the second quarter. That drop reversed last quarter's sequential hiring gain after a spring pay-plan change.
With fewer agents in the field, American Income's net life sales were $96.6 million, barely moving from $96.5 million a year ago, while its life premiums grew 4%. Meanwhile, Direct to Consumer — which sells policies online and by mail and supplies leads to the agencies — saw net life sales fall 12% to $24.0 million as shifts toward artificial-intelligence search tools reduced web traffic.
Across the whole company, total net sales outside United American's health unit fell 1% from a year ago by our math, leaving overall life premium growth at 2.4%. Because life policies stay on the books for years, slow new sales take time to show up in total revenue, but they cap how fast the core business can grow.
What to watch: American Income's average producing agent count in the fourth quarter. Another sequential drop from 11,331 would mean the spring pay changes failed to restart recruiting and that life premium growth will stay near 2%.
Risks this quarter didn't answer
Four standing concerns received no substantive update in the third-quarter earnings release.
- Shareholder lawsuits and government inquiries: legal proceedings cost $6.8 million after tax ($0.09 per share), up from $2.0 million a year ago, and the quarterly filing will show any progress on class-action briefing.
- Policy cancellation rates at American Income: the release does not report policy lapse rates, leaving open whether cancellations stayed near last quarter's elevated baseline.
- Medicare Advantage switching trends: United American's 95% health sales jump shows strong demand now, with 2027 enrollment commentary due on the conference call.
- Bermuda reinsurance approvals and cash flow: the release gave no update on Indiana regulatory approval or third-quarter policy transfers to Globe Life Re.
💲 Other KPIs
Book value per share excluding accumulated other comprehensive income — unrealized bond gains and losses from interest rate swings — rose 10.7% from a year ago and 3.6% from last quarter. Reported book value per share jumped 22.8% to $85.35 because higher bond prices trimmed the after-tax unrealized loss adjustment by $305 million from the second quarter.
Excess investment income — what the bond portfolio earns above the interest required on customer policies — rose 8.9% per share from a year ago and held even with last quarter. Total excess investment income dollars grew 2.9% to $37.9 million as Globe Life bought $832.5 million of bonds at a 6.4% yield, lifting the portfolio yield to 5.33%.
🔮 Guidance
Cut. The insurer lowered its full-year operating profit plan by $0.25 at the middle of the range, to 6.8% growth over 2025. By our math, that leaves $3.62 per share for the fourth quarter, up 6.8% from a year ago. This cut reverses three straight raises (+$0.35, +$0.35, +$0.10) after United American took $23 million in unexpected third-quarter health claims.
New. Management's first outlook for 2027 calls for $16.60 per share at the middle of the range, up 7.1% from the lowered 2026 plan. The wider $1.00 range is typical for its initial year-ahead target issued each October and assumes health underwriting margins recover as the Evry group health business scales.
Raised. The company lifted its full-year buyback target by $65 million at the middle of the range, to $750 million, up 9.5% from 2025. By our math, after spending $563 million in the first nine months, the plan leaves $187 million for the fourth quarter, matching Q3's $185 million pace. It is the third raise this year (+$25M, +$100M, +$65M).
❓ Key Questions
When will Evry stop losing money on health claims?
Globe Life called Evry "a developing group health business still growing and scaling to a size that will enable stable results", but it lost $16 million this quarter. Investors need to know how much premium scale Evry requires to break even.
Why did American Income's agent count fall again?
Average producing agents at the flagship life division slipped from 11,391 in the second quarter to 11,331 in the third, reversing the spring bounce. Management had projected mid-single-digit agent growth for the second half of the year.
How much will 2027 Medicare Supplement prices rise?
United American's health margin fell to minus 3% of premium, and even without Evry and the government billing delay it ran at 7.6% by our math. Investors need to know what rate increases are approved for 2027 to restore margins.
Did the Bermuda reinsurance transfer close in Q3?
Last quarter, management expected to complete a reinsurance transfer to Globe Life Re in the third quarter and update investors on Indiana regulatory approval. The release did not mention whether the deal closed or how much cash it frees for 2027.
