Fuel Tech (FTEK) Q3 2026 earnings review

Fuel Tech sales and backlog rise, but margins swing to a loss

Fuel Tech, a maker of power-plant emission controls and boiler chemicals, grew revenue fast while slipping back into an operating loss. Third-quarter sales rose 16% to $8.7 million as the Air Pollution Control division began executing the utility contracts it won earlier this year, and equipment backlog reached $16.6 million before another $3.3 million of October awards. Even so, thinner equipment margins, higher research spending and a one-off chief executive transition cost pushed the group to a $267,000 net loss.

โš–๏ธ Verdict: โšช Neutral

The story is unchanged because utility equipment orders and summer chemical demand improved while the central growth promises and profitability slipped. Chemical gross margin recovered to 49% and utility backlog kept climbing. The bad news: pollution-control gross margin dropped 7 percentage points to 40%, cash and investments shrank by $1.8 million in the quarter, and the release contained no data center award.

The question now is whether new chief executive Ramesh Nuggihalli can turn data center inquiries into signed contracts before operating losses and acquisitions drain the $27.8 million cash reserve. One view is that utility wins validate the technology for data center power; the other is that five quarters without a data center deal mean those inquiries are only budgetary checks. Updates on the conference call and fourth-quarter award announcements will tell.

๐Ÿ‚ Bull Case

๐ŸŸข๐ŸŸข strengthening GROWTH

Utility Orders Lifted Pollution Control Sales 38%

Fuel Tech's Air Pollution Control (APC) division makes equipment that reduces nitrogen oxide and particle emissions at power plants and factories. After shrinking in 2025, the division won $10 million of utility orders in April and is now turning those contracts into revenue.

  • APC revenue: $3.7 million, up 38.4% from a year ago
  • APC backlog at quarter end: $16.6 million, up from $14.3 million in June and $7.0 million in December
  • Implied new orders booked in Q3: about $6.0 million by our math, before $3.3 million of October awards

The order book keeps growing even as the engineering team bills more work each month. Including the $3.3 million of contracts announced in late October, the division has nearly $20 million of contracted work waiting to be completed.

What to watch: the share of APC backlog scheduled to convert within 12 months in the upcoming quarterly filing. A higher 12-month figure would confirm that recent awards will lift 2027 revenue enough to cover corporate overhead.

๐ŸŸข strengthening MARGIN

Chemical Treatment Gross Margin Returned to 49%

The FUEL CHEM division sells chemical injection programs that stop slag and corrosion inside coal and biomass boilers. Its gross margin had stayed around 45% in the first half of 2026, down from its historical 49% to 50% level.

In the third quarter, FUEL CHEM sales rose 3.1% from a year ago to $4.9 million, beating the prior outlook for flat sales. Gross margin recovered to 48.8%, up nearly 4 percentage points from the second quarter, as summer power demand lifted chemical usage at utility customers.

What to watch: management's call commentary on whether the halted coal-boiler demonstration restarted in mid-fourth quarter as planned. A restart is needed to turn that trial into a $2.5 million to $3.0 million annual account for 2027.

๐Ÿป Bear Case

๐Ÿ”ด๐Ÿ”ด persistent MARGIN contradicts narrative

Pollution Control Margin Drop and R&D Erased Profit

Chief executive Ramesh Nuggihalli said third-quarter sales growth and backlog gains show "progress in converting promising opportunities into new awards". Yet higher revenue produced a $523,000 operating loss, down from a $4,000 operating profit a year ago.

  • Cost of making the products: 55.0% of revenue, up 3.9 percentage points from a year ago
  • APC gross margin: 40.0%, down 7.2 percentage points due to "changes in project and product mix"
  • Research and development: $771,000, or 8.9% of revenue, up 2.9 percentage points
  • Selling and administrative costs: $3.7 million, or 42.2% of revenue, down 0.7 percentage points

Excluding a one-off $175,000 cost for the chief executive change, the operating loss was still $348,000 by our math. Because the new utility equipment projects carry thinner gross margins than last year's work, 16% revenue growth was not enough to pay for higher research spending.

What to watch: full-year selling and administrative expense against the $14.5 million to $15.0 million target set last quarter. Nine-month spending is already $11.0 million, leaving little room for fourth-quarter cost growth.

๐Ÿ”ด persistent CAPITAL ALLOCATION

Operating Losses Cut the Cash Pile to $27.8 Million

Fuel Tech has no debt and relies on its cash and bond portfolio to fund operations and generate interest income. That reserve is shrinking while the new chief executive prepares to buy other businesses.

Total cash and marketable securities fell to $27.8 million in September from $29.6 million in June and $31.9 million in December, by our math. Nuggihalli said the group is now "focused on select M&A" to add products and sales channels. Lower cash balances also cut quarterly interest income by 21% from a year ago to $247,000.

What to watch: any acquisition announcement or deal criteria shared on the conference call. Buying a business for cash would shrink the interest income that currently offsets Fuel Tech's operating losses.

๐Ÿ”ด persistent DISCLOSURE

Risks this quarter didn't answer

Four standing commercial and regulatory items received no specific numbers or contract updates in the third-quarter earnings release.

  • Data center emission-control pipeline: previously quoted at $75 million to $100 million with $1 million to $4 million per-unit pricing and a possible third-quarter reservation deal, but the release announced no data center contract.
  • Dissolved Gas Infusion (DGI), its system for putting oxygen into water: no update on whether the Western US fish hatchery or Southeast municipal wastewater trials converted into a first commercial sale.
  • FUEL CHEM coal-boiler trials: no update in the release on the halted US demonstration or the second coal-fired unit opportunity promised last quarter.
  • Federal gas-turbine emission rules (NSPS): no update on customer ordering behavior or whether developers are using temporary-turbine exemptions to avoid buying emission controls.

New CEO Outlines Acquisition and Data Center Plan

Ramesh Nuggihalli took over as chief executive in August, creating a one-off transition cost of about $175,000 in the quarter. He outlined a plan for "pursuing burgeoning power infrastructure opportunities that support data center and AI infrastructure construction, as well as water and wastewater treatment" alongside targeted acquisitions, and did not issue numerical revenue targets in the release.

๐Ÿ’ฒ Other KPIs

Accounts receivable and Q3 cash burn $5.89 million
โ‡— accelerating

Accounts receivable โ€” money billed to customers but not yet collected โ€” rose 50.9% from June to $5.89 million as pollution-control project billings ramped up. By our math, that working-capital build pushed third-quarter free cash flow to an outflow of $1.78 million, bringing nine-month free cash flow to negative $3.92 million.

United States revenue (26Q3) $7.49 million
โ‡— accelerating

Domestic sales grew 33.1% from a year ago and accounted for 86% of total company sales, driven by US utility pollution-control projects and summer chemical demand. Foreign revenue fell 36.4% from a year ago to $1.19 million, continuing a four-quarter slide outside the United States.

Diluted share count (26Q3) 31.22 million
โ‡’ stable

Weighted-average diluted shares dipped 0.2% from a year ago only because this quarter's net loss excluded stock options from the diluted count. Basic shares outstanding crept up 0.5% over the past year to 31.22 million, as the board has not bought back stock.

โ“ Key Questions

Did any data center inquiry convert into a reservation deal?

Management previously said one data center inquiry could convert into a capacity-reservation agreement before the end of the third quarter. With five slipped timelines so far, investors need to know how much of the $75 million to $100 million pipeline is in active commercial negotiation.

Did the halted FUEL CHEM coal demonstration restart on schedule?

Last quarter, the company said its commercial demonstration customer planned to restart its halted boiler trial in mid-fourth quarter, worth $2.5 million to $3.0 million a year if converted. The release gave no update on that restart or the second coal-unit trial.

When will the water treatment division sign its first sale?

Fuel Tech had targeted 2026 for its first commercial Dissolved Gas Infusion (DGI) contract, including a $500,000 to $1.0 million fish hatchery proposal. Research spending jumped 71% from a year ago in the third quarter, yet DGI remains pre-revenue.

Does management still expect full-year revenue to beat 2025?

Prior leadership repeatedly stated that 2026 revenue would exceed 2025's $26.7 million, which requires at least $5.4 million in the fourth quarter by our math. The third-quarter release dropped the full-year outlook section under the new chief executive.
