Etsy (ETSY) Q3 2026 earnings review

Etsy adds buyers again, but each sale costs it more

Etsy is bringing buyers back to its marketplace, but it is spending more to win each sale. Goods sold grew 9%, a sixth straight quarter of faster growth, even against a harder year-ago comparison. Chief executive Kruti Patel Goyal said the business is "now firmly in growth mode". Marketing took 2 more points of revenue, and the gross margin slipped again.

At a glance
Goods sold on Etsy$2.65B +8.8% from a year ago
Revenue$692M +10.9% from a year ago
Active buyers87.5M +1.0% from a year ago, first rise in two years
Full-year outlook for goods soldRaised to ~7% growth mid-single-digit range in August

โš–๏ธ Verdict: ๐ŸŸข Bullish

The story got better because growth now comes from more shoppers rather than only from higher prices. Active buyers rose from a year ago for the first time since 2024, and Etsy lifted its full-year plan again. The bad news: purchase frequency is still below last year, and the gross margin shrank for a third quarter while the letter did not mention it.

The question now is whether Etsy can keep growing this fast once outside help fades. One answer is that personalisation and the app now carry enough of the growth; the other is that spending per buyer still leans on higher listing prices that will stop rising. The fourth-quarter result, against a plan of 5โ€“7% growth, will tell.

๐Ÿ‚ Bull Case

๐ŸŸข๐ŸŸข strengthening GROWTH

Etsy Adds Buyers Again, Not Just Higher Prices

For two years Etsy's shoppers spent more each while their number fell, and higher listing prices after last year's tariff changes did much of that work. Chief executive Kruti Patel Goyal argued that better search and personalisation would bring people back, so the test was whether the buyer count would turn.

It turned. "Active buyers returned to year-over-year growth for the first time in two years," the letter says, and the count rose by about 540,000 from June. New buyers, reactivated buyers and retention of existing buyers all improved, so the gain does not come from one source.

  • Active buyers: 87.5 million, up 1.0% from a year ago
  • Spending per buyer over twelve months: $126, up 3.9%, a faster rise than last quarter
  • Repeat buyers: 34.7 million, down 0.6% from a year ago but up slightly from June
  • Purchase frequency: still modestly below last year, the letter says

This matters because growth from more shoppers lasts longer than growth from higher prices. But frequency is still down, so the spending gain still comes from bigger orders, which is where tariff-driven prices sit. Patel Goyal also says Etsy is "still benefitting from some external GMS tailwinds" without sizing them.

What to watch: purchase frequency in the fourth-quarter letter in February. Frequency turning positive while buyers keep growing would mean the recovery no longer depends on price.

๐ŸŸข strengthening MARGIN

Profit Margin Rose Despite a Bigger Marketing Bill

Etsy spent more on marketing and still kept more of each revenue dollar. Adjusted EBITDA, its profit measure excluding stock pay and one-off charges, reached 30.4% of revenue, a point above a year ago, because the August layoffs and lower stock pay cut product development and overhead faster than marketing grew.

  • Marketing: 29.9% of revenue, up 2.1 points
  • Overhead (general and administrative): 10.7% of revenue, down 1.1 points
  • All operating costs excluding the $33.9 million restructuring charge: 51.7% of revenue, down 3.6 points by our math

The letter says "the return on our spending increased meaningfully year-over-year", and revenue growth of 11% on 2.1 points more marketing supports that. Some of the spending also returns as fees: Offsite Ads, charged to sellers when Etsy's paid ads bring a sale, lifted the take rate, "primarily reflecting higher year-over-year paid marketing spend".

What to watch: the fourth-quarter margin against the company's own figure of about 30%. Holding it in the holiday quarter, when marketing is heaviest, would show the savings last.

๐ŸŸข strengthening CAPITAL ALLOCATION

Etsy Buys Back Shares Faster With Depop Cash

Etsy sold Depop, its fashion resale site, to eBay on July 30 for about $1.4 billion in cash. It bought back $394.6 million of its own stock in the quarter and retired about 5.2 million shares. The marketplace says it will keep buying "at an accelerated rate", with $2.2 billion still authorised.

Fewer shares is why profit per share grew faster than profit. Net income from continuing operations rose 9% while the diluted share count fell 6%, so profit per share rose 16%. Reported net income of $854 million is not comparable, because it includes an $840 million gain on the Depop sale.

What to watch: repurchases in the fourth quarter. This quarter's pace, kept up for a year, would retire more than a fifth of the shares by our math, while about $2.4 billion of convertible notes remain after the October repayment.

๐ŸŸข strengthening PRODUCT

Non-App Sales Now Grow Almost as Fast

Etsy's mobile app has been its strongest channel and the place where personalised feeds work best. App sales grew 10.4% from a year ago, a little slower than last quarter, and the app held about 47% of goods sold.

The change is elsewhere. Sales through the website and other channels grew 7.5%, up from 3.4% last quarter, so the whole marketplace sped up even as the app slowed. Patel Goyal credits personalisation that now reaches signed-out users and buyer profiles that power feeds and marketing "for four out of five active buyers".

This matters because the app alone could not carry the marketplace, since it is under half of sales. Growth across both channels is harder to explain by one feature or one easy comparison.

What to watch: non-app growth in the fourth quarter. A rate near this quarter's would mean the recovery reaches most of Etsy's shoppers rather than only its most loyal ones.

๐Ÿป Bear Case

๐Ÿ”ด persistent COMPETITION

AI Shopping Agents Still Get No Numbers From Etsy

Etsy lets shoppers buy its items inside Google, Microsoft and OpenAI assistants, and said last year it pays those platforms a commission it does not pass to sellers. Patel Goyal calls this "an exciting and increasingly important discovery channel for Etsy" and says those buyers "continue to come to our marketplace to explore further and complete their purchases".

No number backs the claim. Three months ago agent traffic was under 1% of the total; this letter gives no share, no sales and no cost. Meanwhile the revenue most exposed to agents keeps growing: services revenue, mostly Etsy Ads that sellers buy to be seen on the site, rose 15% and is now almost a third of the total.

What to watch: any figure on agent-sourced sales or their take rate on the fourth-quarter call. Fast growth there without one would mean more discovery happens where Etsy's ads do not run.

๐Ÿ”ด persistent MARGIN contradicts narrative

Gross Margin Fell for a Third Quarter

Patel Goyal wrote that "All key performance indicators continued to improve". One did not. Gross margin, what is left of revenue after payment fees, hosting and support costs, fell to 72.7% from 73.4% a year ago, and the letter does not mention it.

  • Cost of revenue: 27.3% of revenue, up 0.7 points
  • Decline a quarter earlier: 1.3 points on the marketplace-only basis, by our math
  • Net income margin: 16.4%, down 0.4 points, despite lower tax and higher interest income

Last quarter management said the pressure came from refunds, payment fees and trust-and-safety spending, not computing costs. Each quarter's slip is small and easy to miss, but three in a row add up to about a point, and gross margin is the one line the restructuring cannot fix.

What to watch: cost of revenue as a share of sales in the fourth quarter. Another rise would mean the marketplace's running costs grow faster than sales even as the buyer base recovers.

๐Ÿ”ด persistent GROWTH

Risks This Quarter Didn't Answer

Four standing concerns got no new numbers in the shareholder letter, and no call transcript was available to fill the gaps, so each waits for the fourth-quarter report or the next filing.

  • Price-led growth: spending per buyer rose 3.9%, but the letter still does not split that into order size and frequency; the split would show how much comes from tariff-driven listing prices.
  • Tariffs and cross-border trade: outside tailwinds still help, Patel Goyal says, without a size; the fourth-quarter plan assumes currency is "a modest growth headwind".
  • Convertible debt: about $2.4 billion remains after the October repayment while buybacks speed up; the next notes come due in 2027 and 2028, and the pace of repayment against repurchases is unstated.
  • Restructuring and product speed: the $33.9 million charge is taken and the team will be rebuilt "gradually"; whether a smaller team ships features at the same pace shows in the 2027 plan.

new MACRO

Currency Turns From Help to Headwind

Foreign exchange added to Etsy's growth earlier this year but cut it by 0.3 points this quarter. Goods sold grew 9.1% at last year's exchange rates, against 8.8% as reported. The fourth-quarter plan assumes "foreign currency is a modest growth headwind" and that "prior-year comparisons become less favorable", because the fourth quarter of 2025 was the first to grow.

persistent GOVERNANCE

The August Layoffs Cost $33.9 Million

Etsy cut about 220 jobs, mostly in product and engineering, in August. The charge was $33.9 million, a little under the $35 million it planned, and the programme is substantially complete. Product development held at 16% of revenue only because lower stock pay and the smaller team offset the charge. The letter says it will "gradually add product and engineering headcount" while sustaining the current margin, so the saving is not meant to last in full.

๐Ÿ’ฒ Other KPIs

Gross buyer additions (26Q3) 12.1 million
โ‡˜ decelerating

New and returning buyers in the quarter grew 6.2% from a year ago, after 7.1% last quarter. That is a slight slowdown, but the rate was only 2.7% at the end of 2025. Reactivated buyers rose 7.2% and brand-new buyers 4.8%, and the active seller count grew 6.5%, its fastest in two years.

Free cash flow (26Q3) $236 million
โ‡— accelerating

Cash left after capital spending rose 10% from a year ago and equalled 112% of adjusted EBITDA, because Etsy spends under 1% of revenue on equipment and software. Over twelve months, with Depop included until its sale, free cash flow fell 12% to $557 million, as Depop used cash before closing.

Net debt after the October note repayment $0.6 billion
โ‡’ stable

Etsy held $2.5 billion of cash and investments at quarter end against $3.1 billion of convertible notes and leases. On October 1 it repaid the $648.6 million of notes due that day. By our math gross debt falls to about $2.4 billion and net debt stays near $0.6 billion; the next notes mature in 2027 and 2028.

๐Ÿ”ฎ Guidance

Q4 goods sold on the Etsy marketplace $3.46โ€“3.52 billion (+5โ€“7%)
๐Ÿ … raised from Positive year-over-year growth in each quarter of 2026 (set in February)
โ‡˜ decelerating

New range. The plan has holiday-quarter sales growing 5โ€“7%, down from 8.8% this quarter. By our math the middle is 6.0% growth, at the top of what the August full-year outlook implied for this period. Etsy cites currency and a harder comparison. It has beaten the middle of its range by 2.4% on average over five quarters; if the pattern holds, that points to about 8.5%.

Q4 revenue as a share of goods sold (take rate) ~25.6%
โ‡˜ decelerating

New. Revenue is planned at about 25.6% of goods sold in the fourth quarter, down from 26.2% this quarter. The full-year figure of about 25.8% implies the same number by our math, so the two lines agree. Applied to the middle of the sales range, that is about $893 million of revenue.

Q4 adjusted EBITDA margin ~30%
โ‡’ stable

New. About 30%, close to this quarter's 30.4%. The company says it will hold this level while it rebuilds product and engineering headcount, so part of the restructuring saving goes back into staff rather than into the margin.

FY2026 goods sold growth ~7%
๐Ÿ … raised from Mid-single-digit range (August)
โ‡˜ decelerating

Raised. Fourth move up this year: slight growth in February, low single digits in May, mid single digits in August, about 7% now. Last year's marketplace sales were $10.46 billion, so the plan means about $11.19 billion by our math. Nine months already grew 7.3%. That leaves about $3.50 billion for the fourth quarter, or 6.4% growth, a touch above the middle of the explicit range.

FY2026 take rate ~25.8%
๐Ÿ † unchanged from Roughly equal to the first half, about 25.8% (August)
โ‡’ stable

Unchanged. About 25.8% for the year, the same as the first half. Nine months stand at 25.9%, so the plan implies about 25.6% for the fourth quarter by our math, matching the explicit quarterly figure.

FY2026 adjusted EBITDA margin ~30%
๐Ÿ … raised from 29โ€“30% (August)
โ‡’ stable

Raised to the top of the old range. Nine months stand at 29.6%, so about 30% for the year needs the fourth quarter near 30% by our math, which is the explicit quarterly plan. This is the third move up: 28โ€“30% in February and May, then 29โ€“30% in August.

โ“ Key Questions

How much of spending per buyer is higher prices?

Spending per buyer rose 3.9% with frequency still down. The split between order size, listing-price inflation and frequency decides whether growth survives once tariff-driven prices stop rising.

What does Etsy earn on sales through AI agents?

The letter calls agents an increasingly important channel but gives no traffic share, commission rate or take rate. Services revenue, 32% of the total, is the line most exposed.

Why did gross margin fall again, and when does it stop?

Three quarters of decline, about a point in total, with no explanation in the letter. Refunds, payment fees and trust-and-safety costs were last quarter's reasons; the fourth-quarter number will show whether they persist.

How will buybacks be paced against the 2027 notes?

About $2.4 billion of convertible notes remain and repurchases ran at $394.6 million a quarter. The company has not said how it balances the two, or whether it keeps its 18โ€“24 month cash cushion target.

What did the restructuring save, and how much is reinvested?

The charge was $33.9 million and headcount will be added back gradually. The annual saving and the share kept in the margin are not disclosed.
