Escalade (ESCA) Q3 2026 earnings review

Escalade's factory margins rise, but its underlying sales shrink

Escalade, the maker of Goalrilla basketball hoops and Bear Archery gear, expanded its gross margin while sales slipped back into decline. Third-quarter sales fell 3% from a year ago as the boost from last year's archery acquisition faded. Reported operating profit jumped 19%, but that rested on a $1.6 million customs refund; without it, operating profit fell 3% by our math.

At a glance
Net sales$65.6M -3.2% from a year ago
Gross margin29.4% +1.2 percentage points from a year ago
Operating profit, excluding tariff refunds$7.1M -3.1% from a year ago by our math
Quarterly dividend outlook$0.1525 unchanged from last quarter

โš–๏ธ Verdict: โšช Neutral

The story is unchanged because strong factory margins and cash collection balanced out weak underlying demand. Gross margin rose above 29% despite freight inflation, and $15 million of operating cash flow lifted cash above total debt. One caution: selling and administrative costs rose faster than sales again, so profit excluding tariff refunds shrank even with the higher gross margin.

The question now is whether holiday promotions and new products can return the business to sales growth without giving back its gross margin gains. Optimists see the new ASL Solutions purchase and product launches driving 2027 growth, while sceptics see deals masking a shrinking core and adding overhead. Fourth-quarter sales and gross margin will test both views.

๐Ÿ‚ Bull Case

๐ŸŸข๐ŸŸข strengthening MARGIN

Gross Margin Rose Despite Freight Inflation

Escalade makes basketball hoops, archery gear and indoor games, and it has spent two years closing factories to cut fixed costs. Chief executive Patrick J. Griffin said those changes have "established a margin structure that we believe is sustainable through the cycle". Third-quarter gross margin rose 1.2 percentage points from a year ago to 29.4%, as the cost of making products fell from 71.9% of sales to 70.6%.

Griffin attributed the gain to product mix and "improved fixed-cost absorption resulting from the acquisitions we completed during 2025, which offset higher freight and material related costs incurred during the quarter". Keeping gross margin near 30% while sales shrank 3.2% backs his claim that the factory cuts are working, though last year's third quarter also carried $4.3 million of tariff costs that made the comparison easier.

What to watch: fourth-quarter gross margin against last year's 27.7%. Holding that level during the promotional holiday season would show that factory savings outweigh freight costs and retail discounts.

๐ŸŸข strengthening CASH

Cash Flow Built an $11 Million Net Cash Buffer

Escalade faces a January 2027 deadline to pay off its remaining term loan, which sits in current debt on the balance sheet. Strong third-quarter cash collection removed any doubt about its ability to pay that bill without borrowing from its credit line.

  • Operating cash flow: $14.9 million, compared with $1.0 million of cash used a year ago
  • Cash on hand: $24.5 million, up from $16.4 million in the second quarter
  • Total debt: $13.1 million, down 35.3% from $20.2 million a year ago
  • Net cash position: $11.4 million by our math, with $60.0 million available on its credit facility

Part of the cash surge came from collecting the $9.0 million customs refund receivable booked in the second quarter, alongside tighter working capital. Because cash now exceeds total debt by more than $11 million, the recreational goods maker can retire the loan at maturity and still fund tuck-in deals.

What to watch: the current debt line on the first-quarter 2027 balance sheet. A zero term-loan balance with no draw on the revolving credit line will confirm the payoff.

Positives this quarter didn't test

One standing growth driver in the product portfolio got only a qualitative mention in the release.

  • New product launches: Griffin said a steady cadence of new gear will help take market share in 2027, but the release gave no sales figures for the 2026 archery, pickleball or basketball launches; fourth-quarter results will show if they lifted holiday orders.

๐Ÿป Bear Case

๐Ÿ”ด๐Ÿ”ด persistent MARGIN contradicts narrative

Tariff Refunds Again Carried Operating Profit

"Our third quarter results demonstrated the resilience of our more efficient operating model," chief executive Patrick J. Griffin said. Reported operating income rose 18.7% from a year ago to $8.7 million, and net income rose 21.2% to $6.7 million. Those headline gains rested on another one-time refund of past customs duties.

Escalade booked $1.6 million of tariff recoveries in operating income this quarter, plus $0.1 million of interest, after booking $9.9 million in the second quarter. By our math, excluding that $1.6 million refund, operating income fell 3.1% from a year ago to $7.1 million, and EBITDA โ€” earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortisation โ€” slipped 2.4% to $8.4 million. Selling and administrative overhead rose 1.2 percentage points of sales to 17.7%, eating up the gross margin gain.

What to watch: operating income excluding tariff refunds in the fourth quarter. If overhead keeps rising faster than sales once the customs refunds end, underlying profit will shrink.

๐Ÿ”ด๐Ÿ”ด strengthening GROWTH

Sales Turned Negative as Deal Boost Faded

Escalade grew sales by 0.6% in the first quarter and 6.2% in the second, helped by Gold Tip, an archery business it bought in September 2025. Once the third quarter lapped that purchase, total net sales fell 3.2% from a year ago to $65.6 million.

Griffin said basketball, indoor games and table tennis fell against a year-ago quarter when customers ordered early to beat tariffs, and pointed to a "strategic exit from certain lower-margin product lines". Archery, safety and outdoor games grew, helped by vertical bows and Gold Tip. Even so, the drop shows that underlying demand across the portfolio is still shrinking when acquisitions do not pad the comparison.

What to watch: fourth-quarter net sales against last year's $62.6 million, when AllCornhole also laps its purchase date. Another drop would show that new deals are only masking a shrinking core.

๐Ÿ”ด persistent CAPITAL ALLOCATION

Another Deal Closed Without Financial Details

Small acquisitions are Escalade's main tool for adding revenue, and supporters view the deal pipeline as a key growth driver. In the third quarter, the sporting goods group bought ASL Solutions to "broaden and strengthen our business, as demonstrated by our recent acquisition of ASL Solutions", Griffin said.

The cash flow statement shows $1.9 million spent on acquisitions during the quarter, by our math, as the first six months had no deal spending. Management did not disclose what ASL Solutions makes, how much revenue it brings, or what multiple Escalade paid. Because the company never breaks out sales by product category or deal, investors cannot tell whether these purchases earn a return or how much sales would have fallen without them.

What to watch: the acquisitions footnote in the third-quarter 10-Q filing. It will show the purchase price allocation and whether ASL Solutions added inventory.

๐Ÿ”ด persistent DISCLOSURE

Risks this quarter didn't answer

Three standing cost and channel concerns could not be measured from the earnings release alone.

  • Mass-merchant retail sales: fell in the first half of the year; the third-quarter 10-Q footnote on sales by channel will show whether big-box retailers ordered for the holidays.
  • New tariff costs: Escalade noted higher material costs in the release but gave no dollar figure for new Section 122 duties; the 10-Q management discussion will show any updated estimate.
  • Freight and commodity inflation: cited as a headwind offset by factory absorption, with no basis-point figure; the earnings call and 10-Q will test its size.

Holiday Promotions and Buyer Caution

Griffin said inflation, high interest rates and global uncertainty still weigh on discretionary spending. To move goods before year-end, Escalade is running "exciting promotions designed to fuel consumer demand and accelerate sell-through" with retail partners. For 2027, Griffin said new products and a full year of ASL Solutions should "position the business to take market share and generate sales growth, even as consumer headwinds persist".

๐Ÿ’ฒ Other KPIs

Inventories (26Q3) $77.8 million
โ‡˜ decelerating

Inventory fell 3.6% from $80.7 million a year ago, continuing a multi-year effort to carry less stock. Compared with the second quarter's $71.2 million, inventory rose 9.2% as Escalade stocked up for the fourth-quarter holiday season and added ASL Solutions. Lower year-over-year stock reduces storage costs and frees up cash.

Accounts receivable (26Q3) $47.6 million
โ‡˜ decelerating

Amounts owed by customers dropped 9.8% from $52.8 million a year ago, falling three times as fast as the 3.2% decline in quarterly sales. Compared with the second quarter, receivables rose $3.0 million on normal seasonal shipping. Faster collection from retailers helped drive the quarter's $14.9 million operating cash flow.

Share repurchases (26Q3) $1.0 million
โ‡„ reversing

By our math, the Indiana company spent $1.0 million buying back stock in the third quarter, up from zero in the second quarter and $0.3 million in the first. That brought nine-month repurchases to $1.3 million, compared with $2.2 million in the first nine months of last year, reducing the common share count by 0.3% from a year ago.

โ‡’ stable

New. Escalade declared a $0.1525 quarterly dividend payable in January 2027, matching the payout of the last three quarters and up 1.7% from $0.15 a year ago. The recreational equipment maker does not issue numerical outlooks for revenue or earnings.

โ“ Key Questions

What does ASL Solutions make and generate in sales?

Cash flow statements show $1.9 million spent on acquisitions this quarter, but the release gives no revenue, profit or product details for ASL Solutions. Without those figures, investors cannot separate organic sales from deal contributions in 2027.

How much did holiday promotions cost gross margin?

Management previously said it would spend part of its tariff refunds on third- and fourth-quarter retail promotions. Disclosing the promotional discount rate in the fourth quarter would show whether the 29.4% gross margin is holding up on full-price sales.

Are more customs tariff refunds still awaiting approval?

Escalade booked $1.7 million of pre-tax tariff recoveries in the third quarter after booking $10.2 million in the second. Knowing whether any claims remain with customs authorities will tell investors when reported profit will match underlying operations.

Did big-box retail sales recover in the third quarter?

Sales through mass merchants fell in the first half of 2026, and the earnings release does not include the channel breakdown. The upcoming 10-Q filing will show whether large retail chains rebuilt inventory ahead of the holidays.
