Elanco Animal Health (ELAN) Q3 2026 earnings review
Elanco's new pet drugs lift margins, while older lines shrink
Elanco's new pet medicines are lifting prices and profit margins while its older collar and poultry lines shrink. Sales from businesses owned a year ago grew 9% in constant currency as price gains doubled to 4%, pushing profit per share excluding one-offs up 42%. Chief executive Jeff Simmons raised the full-year outlook again and lifted the fourth-quarter sales trajectory above what the August plan implied, though fourth-quarter operating profit is planned to barely move.
| Sales from businesses owned a year ago | +9% in constant currency (5–7% planned) |
|---|---|
| Gross margin, excluding one-offs | 56.1% +3 percentage points from a year ago |
| Net debt to Adjusted EBITDA | 2.9x down from 3.6x at the end of 2025 |
| Full-year revenue outlook | Raised $53M middle of the range: ~8% underlying growth |
⚖️ Verdict: 🟢 Bullish
The story got better because price increases doubled and gross margin excluding one-offs expanded by 3 percentage points, proving the new pet drugs are lifting profitability rather than just adding volume. Both Zenrelia and Credelio Quattro hit their highest market shares in September despite rival launches, and net debt reached 2.9 times profit a quarter early. One caution: marketing and research spending is still rising 11% to 12%, which leaves planned fourth-quarter profit almost flat.
The question now is whether the planned fourth-quarter slowdown to 5% underlying sales growth and flat operating profit is genuine launch cost pressure or another cautious target after seven straight quarterly beats. If rival spending is forcing Elanco to spend its margin gains on advertising, fourth-quarter profit will finish near $193 million; if the plan is cautious, profit will clear the $200 million top of the range. Fourth-quarter results in February will settle it.
🐂 Bull Case
Price Gains Doubled and Lifted Gross Margin
Elanco is raising prices faster while its new pet medicines shift sales toward more profitable products. "Price accelerated to 4% growth, exceeding our expectations, while volume remained robust at 5%," chief executive Jeff Simmons said. That price increase doubled the 2% pace from the first half of the year, led by a 5% price gain in Pet Health.
Because higher prices and pet drug sales carry wider margins, the cost of making the products fell by 3.1 percentage points of revenue by our math. Gross margin excluding one-offs rose 3 percentage points from a year ago to 56.1%, and finance chief Bob VanHimbergen cited "early progress on our Elanco Ascend productivity initiatives", the company's five-year cost-saving programme.
What to watch: fourth-quarter gross margin excluding one-offs. By our math, the raised full-year outlook of 55.8% to 56.0% implies about 51.9% in the fourth quarter, which will test how much of the third-quarter gain holds during a seasonally slower period for pet medicines.
New Pet Drugs Kept Gaining Share Against Rivals
A key worry was that rival launches and heavier competitor advertising would slow Elanco's new pet drugs as US clinic adoption passed 60%. Instead, "Both Zenrelia and Credelio Quattro reached new market share highs in September, with competitive activity having no fundamental impact on the trajectory of our innovation," Simmons said. Pet Health sales rose 14% from businesses owned a year ago, with volume up 9%.
- Credelio Quattro, a broad-spectrum parasite chewable: US market share rose 9 percentage points from a year ago, passing Seresto as Elanco's largest US pet brand
- Zenrelia, a dog skin-itch pill: US market share rose 7 percentage points from a year ago, and European share rose 10 points in the first half
- Clinic adoption: both Zenrelia and Credelio Quattro added 1,600 US clinics in the quarter, reaching about 19,000 and over 16,500 clinics
- Befrena, a dog skin-itch injection: about 20% of buying clinics had never used Zenrelia
The animal health group raised its 2026 sales target for new products launched since 2021 by $25 million to $1.275 billion, and expects European launches for Credelio Quattro and full US supply for Befrena in the first quarter of 2027. What to watch: fourth-quarter new-product revenue, where the full-year target implies $648 million for the second half by our math, up 37% from a year ago.
Debt Target Reached Early, But Excludes Liability
Elanco has been paying down debt to get net debt below three times annual profit before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortisation (Adjusted EBITDA), while critics note its headline ratio leaves out a royalty-sale liability. At the end of September, net debt fell to $3.01 billion, or 2.9 times trailing profit, down from 3.6 times at the end of 2025.
"Reaching this key milestone earlier than anticipated now unlocks accelerated capital allocation flexibility," VanHimbergen said, beating the year-end target a quarter early. However, the calculation still excludes the liability from selling future US royalties to a third party, which cost $18 million in imputed interest this quarter while $21 million of sold royalties flowed through reported revenue.
What to watch: the full balance sheet in the third-quarter filing and management's 2027 capital plans. The filing will show the exact balance of the royalty liability, which stood at $315 million in June and added about 0.35 turns to the leverage ratio.
🐻 Bear Case
Fourth-Quarter Profit Stands Still Despite Sales Beat
"As we are raising full-year guidance to fully pass through the third quarter beat, Elanco is well positioned with momentum heading into 2027," Simmons said. In the third quarter, marketing, selling and administrative costs — advertising, sales reps and overhead — rose 12% to $393 million, or 31.1% of revenue, up 0.2 percentage points from a year ago, while research and development rose 11% to $99 million.
Passing through only the third-quarter beat means fourth-quarter profit does not budge. Elanco's new fourth-quarter plan sets Adjusted EBITDA at $185 million to $200 million, which at the middle of the range is $192.5 million — up 1.9% from $189 million a year ago by our math, and right in line with the $188 million to $198 million implied three months ago.
Management plans to grow operating expenses about 11% in constant currency in the fourth quarter for "incremental strategic investments in the global launches of the company's innovation portfolio and the advancement of the R&D pipeline". What to watch: fourth-quarter Adjusted EBITDA against the $200 million top of the range, which will show whether launch spending is eating the gross margin gains or if the outlook is cautious again.
Older Products and Poultry Are Still Shrinking
Beneath the rapid growth of Elanco's newest pet medicines, older parasite treatments and poultry products are losing ground. The company reported that "Seresto was negatively impacted by U.S. retailer inventory draw down, with underlying performance in line with expectations", while total Farm Animal underlying sales growth slowed to 4%.
- Seresto flea and tick collars: $49 million, down 18% from $60 million a year ago by our math
- Advantage family of pet parasite products: $115 million, up 4% from $111 million a year ago by our math
- Poultry products: $201 million, down 7% from $217 million a year ago
Because older products and poultry are shrinking, the new drugs must do almost all the work to keep total sales growing near 9%. What to watch: full-year base portfolio revenue once fourth-quarter new-product sales are reported, to see whether older brands stabilise or fall faster.
Risks this quarter didn't answer
Four standing concerns and watch items could not be read from the third-quarter press release alone.
- Third-quarter new-product dollar sales: the release raised the full-year target to $1.275 billion but omitted the quarterly figure, which typically appears on the earnings call.
- Zenrelia US safety label study: no update in the release on the data submission to the US regulator due by the end of 2026.
- US veterinary clinic traffic: no commentary in the release on whether clinic visit declines or online shopping shifts affected the quarter.
- Customer concentration: whether a single distributor still accounts for roughly 12% of sales awaits the quarterly filing.

Early 2027 Plan Matches Long-Term Targets
Elanco issued its first outlook for 2027, calling for underlying constant-currency sales growth in the mid-single digits, Adjusted EBITDA growth in the high-single digits, and profit per share excluding one-offs up in the low-double digits. That matches the multi-year target set in December 2025, as a $60 million currency benefit in 2026 fades to a minimal effect by the fourth quarter.
💲 Other KPIs
Cattle sales rose 17% on a reported basis and 11% from businesses owned a year ago in constant currency, making cattle Elanco's fastest-growing animal group. That compares with 12% underlying growth in the second quarter and 13% in the first, helped by beef and dairy products and the April purchase of AHV International.
Cash generated from operations dipped 1.4% from $219 million a year ago by our math, after rising 17% in the second quarter to $277 million. The animal health company did not publish third-quarter capital spending in the release, but said higher profit and working-capital discipline reduced net debt by $154 million during the quarter.
Weighted-average diluted shares rose 2.0% from 496.8 million a year ago by our math, mainly because last year's GAAP net loss excluded employee stock options from the count. Against the second quarter's 505.9 million shares, the count barely moved, as Elanco prioritises debt paydown over share buybacks.
🔮 Guidance
Raised. The middle of the range moved up $52.5 million, lifting full-year underlying constant-currency growth to about 8% from 6% to 7% previously. It is the third raise this year following increases of $62.5 million in May and $67.5 million in August, passing through the third-quarter beat and raising the fourth-quarter trajectory.
Raised. Management lifted the middle of the range by $35 million to 17% growth from a year ago, up from 13% growth in the August plan. This marks the third raise of 2026 — after moves of +$20 million and +$32.5 million — matching the $35.5 million third-quarter beat.
Raised. The middle of the range rose $0.055 to $1.185 per share, or 26% growth from 2025, after earlier raises of $0.03 and $0.07. Most of the increase comes from higher operating profit and a third-quarter tax rate excluding one-offs of 19.4%, down from 26.5% a year ago.
Raised. The plan now calls for gross margin excluding one-offs to rise 1 percentage point from 2025, double the 0.5-point gain expected in August. After a 3-point jump in the third quarter to 56.1%, our math shows the full-year range leaves about 51.9% for the fourth quarter, up from 51.2% in late 2025.
Raised. Elanco added $25 million to its full-year target for new products, following two $50 million raises earlier in the year. By our math, that leaves $648 million for the second half of 2026, or 37% growth from a year ago after 49% growth in the first half.
Improved. Management lowered its year-end debt ratio target by 0.1 turns after already reaching 2.9 times at the end of September. Because fourth-quarter Adjusted EBITDA is planned near last year's level, keeping the ratio at 2.9 times implies net debt holds steady near $3.0 billion through December.
New. The fourth-quarter plan calls for 4% to 6% underlying constant-currency growth (about 6% reported at the middle of the range by our math), down from 9% in the third quarter as the business laps a 9% quarter a year ago. By our math, the range sits $34 million above what the August full-year outlook implied.
New. At the middle of the range, fourth-quarter profit grows 1.9% from $189 million a year ago by our math, slowing from 23% growth in the third quarter as constant-currency operating expenses rise about 11%.
New. The plan points to $0.175 at the middle of the range, up 35% from $0.13 a year ago by our math, when a 39.9% tax rate excluding one-offs weighed on fourth-quarter earnings.
❓ Key Questions
What was third-quarter new-product revenue in dollars?
Elanco raised its full-year new-product sales target by $25 million to $1.275 billion, after reporting $287 million in the first quarter and $340 million in the second. Without the third-quarter dollar figure, investors cannot see how much of the target remains for the fourth quarter.
Has Elanco submitted the Zenrelia label data to regulators?
Management previously committed to submit additional safety study data to the US Food and Drug Administration by the end of 2026 to improve Zenrelia's warning label. The third-quarter release gave no update on whether that package has gone in.
How much did the royalty liability add to leverage?
Headline net debt reached 2.9 times Adjusted EBITDA, but that figure excludes the liability for future royalties sold to a third party, which accrued $18 million of imputed interest this quarter. In June, including that $315 million balance raised leverage by 0.35 turns.
When will US retailer destocking of Seresto end?
Seresto flea and tick collar sales fell 18% from a year ago to $49 million, which the company blamed on US retailers drawing down inventory. Investors need to know if retail inventories are now lean ahead of the spring buying season.
