ECARX hardware sales grow, but chip costs crush its profit

Rising memory chip costs wiped out most of ECARX's gross profit while a cash-heavy software buyout drained its bank balance. Revenue at the car-computing supplier rose 10% to $241 million as hardware shipments grew, but gross margin fell from 22% a year ago to 7% because automakers resisted further price increases. Chief executive Ziyu Shen kept the full-year sales plan unchanged, which by our math requires a 49% jump in the fourth quarter to reach the middle of the range.

โš–๏ธ Verdict: ๐Ÿ”ด๐Ÿ”ด Very Bearish

The story got worse because two core risks hit at once: memory chip inflation crushed margins after management claimed last quarter that it was passing those costs on, and closing the Flyme software deal cut cash to $54 million while restating last year's third-quarter profit into a loss. The bright spot: the company started mass production on 21 vehicle models, including six for overseas markets, and cut underlying overhead costs by 18%.

The question now is whether fourth-quarter vehicle launches and the new Flyme software division can deliver the $403 million of sales needed to hit the bottom of the annual plan without burning the remaining cash. Either the $245 million inventory stockpile turns into profitable fourth-quarter deliveries, or ECARX misses its annual target for a second straight year and faces a cash crunch. Fourth-quarter results and the annual balance sheet will settle both.

Shipments Rose 8%, Led by Antora Computers

ECARX makes computing hardware and cockpit software for cars, and it relies on newer platforms to grow. Total shipments rose 8.1% from a year ago to 721,000 units, up from 550,000 in the second quarter. Antora, its high-end computing platform, accounted for 30% of those shipments, up from 25% a year earlier.

Hardware revenue from selling goods grew 22.6% to $222.7 million on higher volume and price increases. However, the release omitted the combined share of Antora and Pikes, another high-end platform, which stood at 42% last quarter. By our math, hardware revenue per unit fell from $357 in the second quarter to $309, and the release gave no update on how much revenue came from parent group Geely.

What to watch: the combined shipment share of Antora and Pikes in the full-year report. A return to disclosing the combined figure above 42% would show that high-end adoption did not stall in the third quarter.

Operating Cost Cuts and Overseas Launches Continued

The company has spent the past year cutting overhead while expanding outside China. Research and development expenses fell 12.4% from a year ago to $27.5 million, or 11.4% of revenue versus 14.3% last year. General and administrative expenses rose on paper only because ECARX wrote down $6.7 million on convertible bonds from partner DreamSmart; excluding that one-off charge, those costs fell 18.2% to $18.9 million by our math.

On the factory floor, the car-tech supplier started mass production for 21 new vehicle models across five brands, up from nine models last quarter. Six of the new models are built for markets outside China, such as Korea, and preparation for the Volkswagen Group launch in Latin America remains on track for 2027.

What to watch: overseas revenue share in the annual filing. ECARX targets 30% of revenue from outside China by 2028, so the annual breakdown will show if these six international launches moved the needle from the single-digit base.

Memory Costs Pushed the Gross Margin to 7%

Chief executive Ziyu Shen said "The third quarter was defined by disciplined execution across our product pipeline and financial results", adding that "careful management of our supply chain and higher memory costs, are directly supporting revenue growth". Last quarter, Shen told investors that passing memory chip costs to automakers had no impact on the gross margin.

The third-quarter numbers proved the opposite. The company admitted in the release that "Cost escalation in the third quarter exceeded what our current pricing was able to offset", and that "passing on further cost increases proved more challenging, with a larger portion being absorbed internally to support volume growth and maintain partnership commitments". Cost of goods sold jumped 18.8 percentage points of revenue by our math, dragging the total gross margin down 14.9 points from a year ago to 7.0%.

  • Total gross margin: 7.0%, down from 19.8% last quarter and 21.9% a year ago
  • Hardware gross margin: 4.3% by our math, down from 15.0% in the second quarter
  • Service revenue: $17.7 million, down 52.5% from a year ago as model launches slowed

What to watch: fourth-quarter gross margin. ECARX warned that memory costs will weigh on profit for the next few quarters, so another single-digit reading would confirm it lacks pricing power with its carmaker customers.

The Unchanged Plan Needs a Record Fourth Quarter

ECARX kept its full-year revenue outlook at $1.0 billion to $1.1 billion. Through the first nine months of 2026, revenue totaled $597.5 million, up 10.0% from a year ago. In the third quarter, total revenue grew 9.5% to $240.8 million because a 52.5% drop in engineering service revenue offset most of the hardware gains.

The company explained that "the pace of project launches subsequently experienced a notable deceleration in the third quarter" after peaking in the second quarter. By our math, hitting even the bottom of the full-year outlook requires $402.5 million of revenue in the fourth quarter, and the middle of the range requires $452.5 million โ€” a 48.5% jump over last year's record fourth quarter.

What to watch: fourth-quarter service and software revenue. Without a rebound in engineering services or a disclosed contribution from the newly acquired Flyme software unit, hardware shipments alone will struggle to close the $402.5 million gap.

๐Ÿ”ด๐Ÿ”ด strengthening CAPITAL ALLOCATION

The Flyme Deal Drained Cash and Restated History

On September 30, ECARX completed the purchase of Hubei Qiguang, the company behind the Flyme car operating system, "giving us ownership of the application layer that drivers use every day", Shen said. To close the deal, the company paid $191.5 million during the quarter using its cash reserves and $67.8 million of new bank loans, plus another $30.5 million of bank loans to fund working capital.

  • Cash and restricted cash: $53.7 million, down from $165.5 million in June
  • Total borrowings and convertible notes: $681.8 million by our math, with $383.4 million due within a year
  • Shareholders' deficit: widened to $566.9 million from $273.6 million at year-end

Because Hubei Qiguang was under common control, ECARX combined their historical accounts and also corrected errors from 2021 and 2022 government subsidies. That restatement turned last year's third-quarter net profit of $0.9 million into an $8.4 million net loss, showing Flyme was losing money. Meanwhile, ECARX wrote off $6.7 million on bonds from DreamSmart, the partner originally tied to Flyme.

What to watch: standalone revenue and cash burn of the Flyme division in the annual filing. With cash down to $53.7 million and a going-concern warning already in place, the company cannot afford another cash-burning unit.

Operating Losses Widened and Ended the Profit Streak

At the end of 2025, management pledged to maintain positive operating income throughout 2026, then shifted focus to a streak of positive Adjusted EBITDA (earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, amortization, and share-based pay). In the third quarter, both measures fell deeply into the red.

The operating loss widened to $36.2 million from $6.3 million a year ago (restated) and $6.2 million in the second quarter. Adjusted EBITDA swung to a loss of $37.7 million, ending the positive streak, while the net loss reached $48.6 million as interest expense more than doubled to $8.0 million.

What to watch: fourth-quarter Adjusted EBITDA. With memory costs still biting, returning to breakeven in the fourth quarter depends entirely on the seasonal volume jump.

Arm Agreement and European Luxury Cockpit Lab

ECARX signed a non-binding memorandum of understanding with chip designer Arm "to co-develop AI compute platforms for automotive applications", building on their existing joint chip venture SiEngine. The company is also finalizing a deal with an unnamed European luxury carmaker to build an AI cockpit lab in China using Flyme software, and it plans to integrate Tencent Cloud's WorkBuddy AI assistant into its operating system.

๐Ÿ’ฒ Other KPIs

Inventories (26Q3) $244.5 million
โ‡— accelerating

Inventories nearly quadrupled from $62.3 million at the end of 2025 and almost doubled from $126.2 million in the second quarter (+93.7% by our math). The automotive supplier tied its working capital outflow to preparing for new vehicle launches, funded by $30.5 million in new bank loans.

Diluted share count (26Q3) 388.7 million
โ‡— accelerating

The weighted average share count rose 14.7% from 339.0 million a year ago and 4.4% from 372.3 million in the second quarter by our math. Convertible note conversions and share issuances continued to dilute shareholders despite $9.9 million of share buybacks in the first half.

Current contract liabilities (26Q3) $3.2 million
โ‡˜ decelerating

Advance payments from customers for future work fell to $3.2 million ($3.1 million from related parties and $0.1 million from third parties), down from $4.0 million in June and $7.4 million at the end of 2025. The shrinking balance leaves almost no pre-paid cushion for fourth-quarter service revenue.

๐Ÿ”ฎ Guidance

FY26 Total Revenue $1.0โ€“1.1 billion
๐Ÿ † unchanged from $1.0โ€“1.1 billion
โ‡— accelerating

Unchanged. The full-year plan still calls for $1.05 billion at the middle of the range, or about 24% growth over 2025's reported $847.9 million. By our math, after $597.5 million in the first nine months, ECARX needs $402.5 million to $502.5 million in Q4 โ€” up 32% to 65% from last year's record Q4. In 2025, the company guided for ~20% growth and delivered 10%.

Q4 & Near-Term Gross Margin Weighed down by memory costs
๐Ÿ † unchanged from Negatively impacted by memory costs
โ‡˜ decelerating

Unchanged. The company expects global memory chip costs to keep hurting gross margin and operating profit over the next few quarters, including the fourth quarter. Management said it is working on price adjustments and product mix to soften the blow, after third-quarter gross margin dropped to 7.0%.

โ“ Key Questions

What are Flyme's standalone revenue and profit?

ECARX paid $191.5 million in cash and loans this quarter to close the Flyme software acquisition and restated prior periods. Restated Q3 2025 net income dropped by $9.3 million, suggesting Flyme was losing money, yet management has not disclosed Flyme's revenue.

Why did inventories double to $244.5 million in one quarter?

Inventories jumped by $118.3 million from June to September and are up nearly fourfold since December. Investors need to know how much of this jump came from consolidating Flyme versus stockpiling expensive memory chips ahead of Q4 launches.

Why did you drop the Pikes shipment share disclosure?

In the second quarter, ECARX reported that high-end Antora and Pikes systems reached 42% of shipments. This quarter it reported only Antora at 30%, making it impossible to tell if total high-end mix rose or fell as unit prices dropped.

How will you refinance $383 million of near-term debt?

Short-term bank loans and current convertible notes stand at $383.4 million against $53.7 million in cash and restricted cash. With Adjusted EBITDA back at a $37.7 million quarterly loss, the company needs to detail its remaining bank credit lines.
