Ecovyst (ECVT) Q3 2026 earnings review

Ecovyst raises its profit outlook, but sulfur costs compress margins

Ecovyst grew its sulfuric acid volumes and beat its third-quarter profit target, though zero-margin raw material pass-throughs squeezed its margin percentage. Excluding $67 million of sulfur cost pass-throughs, sales rose 18% from a year ago by our math on refinery and mining demand plus the acquired Calabrian business. Chief executive Kurt J. Bitting raised the full-year Adjusted EBITDA outlook by $9 million at the middle of the range to $210 million.

At a glance
Sales excluding sulfur cost pass-through+18% from a year ago by our math (reported sales +51%)
Adjusted EBITDA$61.2M +6.4% from a year ago; above $54–59M plan
Profit per share, excluding one-offs$0.23 +21% from a year ago
Full-year Adjusted EBITDA outlookRaised $9M middle of the range: $210M (+22%)

⚖️ Verdict: 🟢 Bullish

The story got better because strong refinery demand and fewer customer outages lifted third-quarter profit above the company's plan. One caution: half of the $9 million full-year outlook increase came from delaying a fourth-quarter plant maintenance outage into early 2027, and by our math the plan still leaves fourth-quarter profit for the existing business down 2% from a year ago.

The question now is whether underlying profit growth holds up in 2027 once sulfur prices stop climbing and the delayed maintenance outage hits. Bulls see mining demand and year-end contract resets driving another step up, while bears see a temporary sulfur spike and easy refinery comparisons fading. Next quarter's initial 2027 outlook and virgin acid contract renewal commentary will settle it.

🐂 Bull Case

🟢 strengthening GROWTH

Refining and Mining Demand Lifted Acid Volumes

Ecovyst makes virgin sulfuric acid for mines and factories, and regenerates spent acid for oil refineries making high-octane fuel. Last year, unplanned customer refinery shutdowns hurt its volumes. This quarter, customers ran their plants harder and bought more acid.

"Strong refining margins and increased export demand drove year-over-year growth in regenerated sulfuric acid volumes and sales," chief executive Kurt J. Bitting said. He also cited "solid mining demand, stable demand across industrial applications and positive pricing fundamentals" for virgin acid. Excluding the $67 million sulfur cost pass-through, sales grew 17.9% from a year ago by our math, helped by the newly acquired Calabrian sulfur dioxide business.

That growth matters because it shows underlying volume and contract pricing are rising alongside raw material pass-throughs. The company expects copper mining and "high operating rates for Canadian gold mines will continue in the fourth quarter". Still, Ecovyst remains "cautious about the potential for unplanned outages with our refining customers".

What to watch: fourth-quarter sales growth excluding the implied $65 million sulfur pass-through. A reading above our 11% estimate would show refinery and mining volumes stayed strong through year-end.

🟢 strengthening GROWTH

Full-Year Plan Raised on Q3 Beat

Ecovyst tracks Adjusted EBITDA — earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization, excluding one-offs — as its main profit measure. Bitting raised the full-year target for a third straight quarter, lifting the middle of the range by $9 million to $210 million.

Third-quarter profit reached $61.2 million, up 6.4% from a year ago and $4.7 million above the middle of the company's $54–59 million target. Bitting credited "strong momentum through the first nine months of the year" and "the shift of a turnaround from the fourth quarter into early 2027" for the higher full-year plan.

Beating the third-quarter target accounts for half of the full-year increase, and delaying the plant maintenance outage explains the rest. Moving the outage lifts fourth-quarter production, but it pushes those maintenance costs into early next year.

What to watch: the initial 2027 profit outlook next quarter. It will show how much the delayed maintenance outage weighs on first-quarter 2027 earnings.

🐻 Bear Case

🔴🔴 persistent MACRO contradicts narrative

Sulfur Cost Pass-Through Cut the Profit Margin

Ecovyst passes changes in the price of raw sulfur directly into its customers' contract prices. That mechanism protects dollar profit when sulfur costs climb, but it inflates reported sales with revenue that carries no profit.

The company recorded a "pass-through effect of higher sulfur costs of approximately $67 million" in the third quarter, up from $55 million in the second quarter. Cost of goods sold — the direct cost of making its chemicals — jumped 6.4 percentage points to 81.0% of sales, while higher manufacturing and transport costs also weighed on profit.

  • Reported sales: up 50.6% from a year ago to $308.6 million
  • Adjusted EBITDA margin: 19.8% of sales, down 8.3 percentage points from a year ago
  • Adjusted EBITDA margin excluding sulfur pass-through: 25.3% by our math, down 2.8 percentage points

Even after stripping out the zero-margin sulfur revenue, Ecovyst's profit margin shrank because plant and shipping inflation ate into its pricing gains. Furthermore, if sulfur prices roll over from peak levels, the company warned that "a significant decrease in the price of sulfur could drive short-term customer destocking".

What to watch: fourth-quarter sulfur pass-through against the implied $65 million remainder. A drop below that level would signal sulfur prices have turned down, testing whether customers hold back orders.

Legacy Profit Still Shrinks in the Fourth Quarter

Before acquiring Calabrian at the end of June, Ecovyst's outlook pointed to a second-half profit decline for its existing sulfuric acid business. Management blamed fewer spot sales of virgin acid, plant maintenance, and the reversal of an earlier pricing timing benefit.

For the full year, the revised plan calls for $208–212 million of Adjusted EBITDA, including $5–6 million from Calabrian in the fourth quarter. With $154.2 million earned in the first nine months, the middle of the full-year range leaves $55.8 million for the fourth quarter by our math, or $50.3 million excluding Calabrian.

That $50.3 million implied figure sits 2% below the $51.3 million Ecovyst earned in the fourth quarter of 2025, even after Bitting moved a planned fourth-quarter maintenance outage into early 2027. Without the acquisition and the delayed outage, the existing business is still stepping down at year-end.

What to watch: fourth-quarter Adjusted EBITDA excluding Calabrian. A result above $51.3 million would show the legacy business grew without relying on the acquisition.

🔴 persistent CAPITAL ALLOCATION

Calabrian Adds Debt Faster Than Disclosed Profit

Ecovyst bought the Calabrian sulfur dioxide business on June 30 for $178.5 million in cash, viewing bolt-on deals as a repeatable growth model. Yet the purchase added $72.8 million of goodwill and $66.2 million of intangibles while lifting net debt.

"Calabrian’s third quarter performance was consistent with our investment thesis, integration is underway, and we remain on track to capture anticipated synergies," Bitting said. However, the release did not disclose Calabrian's third-quarter sales or profit, while net debt reached $425.9 million, or 2.1 times trailing Adjusted EBITDA, up from 1.2 times at year-end.

Management expects Calabrian to add $5–6 million to fourth-quarter Adjusted EBITDA. Because Ecovyst previously projected $10–12 million for the entire second half, third-quarter profit was likely $5–6 million as well, leaving leverage above 2 times until full-year earnings catch up.

What to watch: standalone Calabrian revenue in the quarterly filing's footnote. It will show whether the acquired business is matching its roughly $29 million quarterly run-rate.

🔴 persistent DISCLOSURE

Risks this quarter didn't answer

Three standing concerns from prior quarters received no detailed figures in the earnings release.

  • Interest rate hedges: net interest expense rose to $6.2 million from $3.5 million last quarter on the larger debt load, and the release gave no update on replacing the $450 million rate cap expiring in October.
  • Price-versus-cost profit bridge: management noted that manufacturing and transport inflation partly offset net pricing, but did not provide the dollar spread that came in at $9 million last quarter.
  • Nylon end-market demand: the release described industrial virgin acid demand as stable, without saying whether the flat nylon market has improved.

Buybacks Restarted Alongside Heavy Plant Spending

After pausing buybacks in the second quarter to fund Calabrian, Ecovyst bought back $2.7 million of stock at $10.25 per share. Bitting said the company will "intend to repurchase up to a total of $20 million in the second half of 2026". Meanwhile, nine-month capital spending on plant upgrades rose to $72.7 million from $51.6 million in continuing operations a year ago.

Accounts receivable and inventories (26Q3) $160.3 million combined
⇗ accelerating

Both working-capital lines climbed alongside higher sulfur prices and the addition of Calabrian. Accounts receivable — money customers owe for delivered chemicals — reached $121.3 million, up 45.6% from a year ago. Inventories rose 61.8% from a year ago to $39.0 million, absorbing $31.4 million of cash across the two lines over the first nine months.

Adjusted Free Cash Flow (26Q3) $19.6 million
⇗ accelerating

Cash flow after capital spending, excluding one-off deal and disposal costs, improved from $8.6 million in the second quarter to $19.6 million in the third quarter by our math. Nine-month Adjusted Free Cash Flow reached $32.4 million, down from $42.4 million a year ago because Ecovyst spent $21.1 million more on plant upgrades in continuing operations.

Diluted share count (26Q3) 110.6 million
⇘ decelerating

The diluted share count fell 3.7% from 114.9 million a year ago, and slipped 0.2% from 110.8 million in the second quarter. Most of the year-over-year drop came from $35.7 million of buybacks in the first quarter and $20.0 million in the fourth quarter of 2025, which lifted per-share profit growth above net income growth.

❓ Key Questions

What were Calabrian's standalone Q3 sales and Adjusted EBITDA?

Ecovyst included the acquired business for a full quarter and guided its fourth-quarter Adjusted EBITDA at $5–6 million, but gave no third-quarter standalone numbers in the release to verify its run-rate.

How much did the delayed Q4 turnaround boost 2026 guidance?

Chief executive Kurt J. Bitting raised full-year Adjusted EBITDA by $9 million at the middle of the range partly by moving a fourth-quarter maintenance outage into early 2027, without sizing the dollar shift between years.

What was the net price-versus-cost dollar spread in Q3?

Management said manufacturing and transport inflation partly offset contract pricing gains, which leaves investors without the exact dollar bridge that contributed $9 million in the second quarter.

How will Ecovyst hedge its debt after October's cap expiry?

Gross debt stands at $497.1 million after the Calabrian loan, and the company's $450 million interest rate cap was scheduled to expire in October 2026, leaving fourth-quarter implied interest up at $7.1 million.
