DTE Energy (DTE) Q3 2026 earnings review
DTE Energy raises its five-year plan, while electric profit falls
DTE Energy is selling its unregulated energy project business to fund a utility building boom, even as that unit carried third-quarter profit. Profit per share excluding one-offs edged up 2% to $2.30 only because tax credits at DTE Vantage more than doubled its earnings, while profit outside Vantage fell 14% by our math. Chief executive Joi Harris agreed to sell Vantage for $3 billion, resetting the 2027 profit per share outlook to match 2026.
| Profit per share, excluding one-offs | $2.30 +2.2% from a year ago |
|---|---|
| Profit per share outside Vantage, excluding one-offs | $1.77 -14.1% from a year ago (by our math) |
| 5-year utility capital plan | $44.2B up 28% from $34.5B prior utility plan |
| 2027 profit per share outlook | $7.59โ7.73 0% growth from 2026 outlook |
โ๏ธ Verdict: ๐ข Bullish
The story got better because DTE approved the Google data-centre contract, sold its tax-credit-dependent business for $3 billion, and lifted its long-term annual profit growth target past 9% through 2031. One caution: the expanded $44 billion utility spending plan nearly doubles planned share sales to $1 billion a year from 2027, and DTE kept the EES Coke coal-coke plant and its legal liabilities.
The question now is whether data-centre power demand lifts per-share profit as promised or gets eaten up by customer bill credits and $1 billion of annual share dilution. If new power contracts earn their full regulated return, growth steps above 9% in 2028; if regulators cap utility rates or share sales come early, per-share gains lag the capital spending. February's electric rate case order and a third data-centre deal promised by year-end will tell.
๐ Bull Case
Vantage Sale Lifts the Five-Year Growth Target
DTE Energy agreed to sell DTE Vantage, its unregulated business that develops renewable natural gas and industrial power projects, for about $3 billion. Chief executive Joi Harris said the sale "positions DTE as a high-growth, premium utility with a stronger long-term outlook." The Detroit utility group will put the cash into its regulated electric and gas networks.
- Five-year utility capital plan (2027โ2031): $44.2 billion, up 28% from the prior $34.5 billion utility plan
- Long-term profit per share target: over 9% annual growth through 2031, up from 6% to 8% previously
- 2027 profit per share baseline: $7.59 to $7.73, matching the 2026 target range
The deal trades a division with expiring tax credits for regulated power lines and plants that earn a steadier return. Because losing Vantage removes about $185 million of annual profit, 2027 profit per share will not grow from 2026. By our math, the prior 6% to 8% growth target pointed to $8.12 to $8.27 next year, so investors wait until 2028 for the faster growth rate.
What to watch: the closing of the Vantage sale in the first half of 2027 and the debt repayment schedule. A delay past mid-year would push out the utility funding plan and alter 2027 profit.
Regulators Approved the Google Data-Centre Contract
DTE is signing up big technology companies to buy power for new data centres in Michigan. State regulators at the Michigan Public Service Commission (MPSC) approved its 20-year power supply contract with Google for a 1-gigawatt site in Van Buren Township. That joins an approved 1.4-gigawatt agreement with Oracle that is already under construction.
The approval unlocks about $5 billion of power generation and battery storage spending through 2032, which DTE added to its new five-year capital plan. Management says selling excess power capacity to Oracle and Google spreads fixed grid costs over more customers, allowing DTE Electric to delay filing a new rate hike request until at least 2028.
What to watch: a third data-centre contract from the 2 gigawatts currently in advanced talks, which management targets by the end of 2026. Signing it would add further capital spending above the new $44.2 billion plan.
๐ป Bear Case
Vantage Tax Credits Carried Third-Quarter Profit
Finance chief David Ruud pointed to "Strong financial performance through the third quarter of 2026" as operating profit per share, which excludes one-offs, rose 2.2% from a year ago to $2.30. That headline gain came entirely from the non-utility DTE Vantage business that the company just agreed to sell.
- DTE Vantage operating profit: $110 million, up 168% from $41 million a year ago on renewable gas and investment tax credits
- DTE Electric operating profit: $468 million, down 13.5% from $541 million a year ago
- Operating profit per share outside Vantage: $1.77, down 14.1% from $2.06 a year ago by our math
Part of the drop at the electric utility came from a tough comparison on tax timing, higher storm costs, and rate-base expenses. DTE also wrote in its presentation that high non-utility profit allowed its electric and gas utilities to "unwind one-time lean operational measures and absorb higher storm costs in 2026". Once Vantage is sold, DTE will no longer have those tax credits to cushion utility cost increases.
What to watch: fourth-quarter operating profit at DTE Electric, which needs to reach $384 million to $404 million to hit its full-year target. Missing that range would show that utility cost pressures outlasted the third-quarter tax comparison.
New Share Sales Nearly Double From 2027
Because DTE spends far more on power plants and grid upgrades than it generates in cash, it sells new shares and borrows money to pay the bill. The $3 billion Vantage sale lets DTE push $500 million of 2026 share sales into 2027. However, the presentation states that DTE is now "Targeting average annual equity issuances of ~$1 billion 2027-2031".
That is nearly double the $500 million to $600 million annual share sales management planned previously. Adding $9.7 billion to the five-year utility capital budget requires more outside funding even after the Vantage proceeds arrive, meaning existing shareholders face roughly $5 billion of dilution over five years alongside potential junior subordinated debt.
What to watch: the exact 2027 share issuance and debt repayment schedule when DTE gives its formal 2027 financial plan. Front-loading the $1 billion annual share sales before data-centre revenue ramps in 2028 would weigh on per-share growth.
DTE Keeps the Coal Coke Liability
Harris said the Vantage divestiture "advances our strategy to focus our resources on our regulated electric and gas utilities". Yet a footnote in the release states that the deal "Includes the sale of primarily all DTE Vantage assets, except EES Coke".
EES Coke is an industrial coal-coke battery business where DTE recorded a $112 million pre-tax legal reserve charge in the first nine months of 2026 following an environmental penalty. By leaving EES Coke out of the J.P. Morgan Infrastructure deal, DTE keeps both an industrial steel-exposed asset and the ongoing legal appeal on its own books.
What to watch: the legal appeal outcome and full-year earnings contribution of EES Coke in the annual filing. Keeping the plant means DTE is not yet a pure regulated utility.
Underlying Electric Demand Shrank Again
Hot summer weather added $27 million to DTE Electric's third-quarter operating profit, masking a softer picture underneath. Stripping out weather swings, electricity use across Southeast Michigan shrank 0.9% over the first nine months of 2026 to 33,904 gigawatt-hours. By our math, third-quarter weather-adjusted demand fell 1.0% from a year ago.
Industrial power demand dropped 2.9% over the nine months, which DTE attributed to "Lower steel output and Energy Optimization" (its customer energy-efficiency programmes). Commercial sales dipped 0.5% and residential sales were flat. Until Oracle's data centre begins ramping up in 2027, DTE is layering its building boom onto a slightly shrinking local industrial base.
What to watch: fourth-quarter weather-adjusted industrial electricity sales. A drop worse than 3% would show deeper weakness among Michigan auto and steel manufacturers before data-centre load arrives.
Risks This Quarter Didn't Answer
Several standing concerns from last quarter received no new numbers in the earnings release or presentation slides.
- Gas rate hike request: DTE expected a September 2026 regulator decision on its $163 million net gas rate request, but the release gives no outcome.
- Electric rate hike request: no update on the pending $474 million electric rate case due in February 2027.
- Data-centre credit collateral: no dollar figure for collateral posted after S&P downgraded Oracle, DTE's largest new power buyer.
- Behind-the-meter equipment: no update on siting or cost for the uncontracted Vantage power equipment ordered last quarter.

20-Year Generation Plan Cuts Projected Costs
DTE Electric filed its 20-year power generation roadmap, called an Integrated Resource Plan, with Michigan regulators. The plan keeps DTE's pledge to shut all coal plants by 2032, retiring 3 gigawatts at the Monroe plant in 2028 and 2032. It adds 15 gigawatts of wind and solar, 4.5 gigawatts of battery storage, and 2.2 gigawatts of natural gas, while costing an estimated $3.5 billion less than DTE's previous long-term plan.
๐ฒ Other KPIs
Capital spending rose 22.9% from a year ago in the first nine months, led by cleaner power generation nearly doubling to $1,504 million. Because cash from operations stayed flat at $2.4 billion, free cash flow (operating cash flow minus capital spending) was negative $1.9 billion, compared with negative $1.1 billion a year ago.
Net borrowing rose 31.6% from $1.9 billion in the first nine months of 2025. The utility group issued $2.9 billion of new debt and repaid $0.4 billion to fund its grid and power plant build-out. Diluted share count edged up 0.5% from a year ago to 208 million shares.
๐ฎ Guidance
Unchanged. Management still expects operating profit per share near the top of the $7.59 to $7.73 range, or about 4.1% growth at the middle of the range over 2025's $7.36. By our math, that leaves $2.08 for the fourth quarter at the middle of the range, a 26.1% jump from $1.65 in the fourth quarter of 2025 as last year's tax timing reverses.
Cut against the prior growth rate. Removing DTE Vantage keeps the 2027 profit per share range identical to 2026's $7.59 to $7.73, below the $8.12 to $8.27 implied by the old 6% to 8% annual growth target. By our math, comparing 2027 against 2026 utility profit without Vantage represents 13.1% underlying growth.
Raised. DTE lifted its full-year operating cash flow plan by $100 million to $4.0 billion, up from $3.4 billion in 2025. By our math, after generating $2.4 billion in the first nine months, the utility needs $1.6 billion of operating cash flow in the fourth quarter.
Unchanged. The full-year spending plan still calls for $5.22 billion at DTE Electric, $900 million at DTE Gas, and $600 million to $700 million at the non-utility businesses. By our math, having spent $4.27 billion through September leaves about $2.50 billion of capital spending for the fourth quarter.
โ Key Questions
Why Did DTE Keep EES Coke in the Sale?
DTE Vantage is being sold for $3 billion except for the EES Coke battery business, which just incurred a $112 million legal reserve. Did buyers refuse the environmental liability, and what does EES Coke earn on its own?
What Was the Outcome of the Gas Rate Case?
Management previously expected a Michigan regulator order in September 2026 on DTE Gas's $163 million rate hike request, but the third-quarter release did not mention it. What rate relief and return on equity were granted?
Where Did Fixed Contract Backlog Land in Q3?
Fixed-fee remaining performance obligations jumped 50% last quarter to $986 million, mostly in the non-utility segment. How much of that contract backlog leaves with the DTE Vantage sale?
How Much Collateral Did Oracle Post After Its Downgrade?
Presentation slides note that credit and collateral requirements protect customers on the 1.4-gigawatt Oracle contract. Following S&P's downgrade of Oracle, how much collateral does DTE currently hold?
