Crane NXT (CXT) Q3 2026 earnings review
Crane NXT raises its profit outlook, but cuts its sales plan
Crane NXT's banknote and security printing division beat expectations, while its payment hardware and inspection business fell further behind. Total sales at the authentication and payment group rose 12%, but sales from businesses owned a year ago grew just 1%. Chief executive Aaron Saak raised the bottom of the full-year profit per share outlook on strong cash flow and debt paydown, even as he cut the full-year sales plan.
| Sales from businesses owned a year ago | +1.1% total sales +11.7% to $497.1M |
|---|---|
| Profit per share, excluding one-offs | $1.28 0% from a year ago (standard EPS $0.66, -24%) |
| Full-year sales growth outlook | Cut to ~14% from +15% to +17% |
| Full-year profit per share outlook, excluding one-offs | Raised $0.05 middle of the range: $4.37 (+7.6%) |
โ๏ธ Verdict: ๐ด Bearish
The story got worse because weakness in the Detection and Traceability division spread from legacy payment machines to the newly acquired Antares Vision business. Underlying sales in that division dropped 5%, and Antares missed its third-quarter sales target, forcing management to trim the full-year company revenue outlook. One bright spot: the currency division easily beat its flat third-quarter target and raised its full-year growth plan to 11%.
The question now is whether the inspection and payment division can deliver the fourth-quarter shipment surge baked into the lowered plan. Either delayed Antares Vision projects land in the fourth quarter to lift division sales by about 31% by our math, or persistent hardware weakness forces another shortfall. Fourth-quarter segment sales will settle it.
๐ Bull Case
Currency Sales Beat the Plan and Lifted the Outlook
Security and Authentication Technologies (SAT), the division that prints banknotes and makes anti-counterfeiting labels, beat expectations despite a hard comparison from last year. Management had told investors to expect third-quarter division sales to be flat or slightly down. Instead, chief executive Aaron Saak said the group "secured meaningful long-term customer wins that enhance visibility into future revenue".
- SAT sales: $243.5 million, up 6.4% from a year ago and 7.2% excluding currency swings
- SAT operating margin excluding one-offs: 25.7%, up 1.3 percentage points from a year ago
- SAT order backlog: $481.6 million, up 7.6% from a year ago, though down $16.5 million from last quarter's record
Because the banknote and security business shipped more orders and saved money integrating De La Rue, Crane NXT raised its full-year SAT sales growth plan to about 11%. By our math, that still points to a 9.5% fourth-quarter decline against last year's peak.
What to watch: fourth-quarter SAT order backlog in the full-year report. A rebound toward $500 million would show that central-bank orders are refilling the book faster than fourth-quarter shipments drain it.
Strong Cash Flow Paid Down $91 Million of Debt
Crane NXT borrowed heavily over the past year to buy De La Rue's authentication unit and Antares Vision, pushing its net debt to 2.9 times yearly cash profit in the first quarter. Saak said third-quarter cash generation "keeps us on track to achieve our year-end deleveraging target" of roughly 2.3 times.
The industrial group generated $111.8 million of operating cash flow, helped by a $39.4 million release of working capital. After capital spending and transaction costs, cash flow excluding one-offs reached $97.7 million, or 131.8% of profit excluding one-offs. Management used that cash to cut net debt by $91.1 million from last quarter to $1,161.5 million, lowering its net leverage ratio to 2.5 times and trimming its full-year net financing cost outlook.
What to watch: year-end net leverage ratio in the fourth-quarter release. Reaching 2.3 times would require about $90 million more in debt reduction during the fourth quarter.
๐ป Bear Case
DTT Slump Forced a Full-Year Sales Cut
Detection and Traceability Technologies (DTT) combines Crane Payment Innovations (CPI), which makes vending and retail payment machines, with Antares Vision, an inspection and tracking business bought in March 2026. Saak praised "the strength of our portfolio", and reported DTT sales rose 17.2% to $253.6 million because of the buyout.
- DTT sales from businesses owned a year ago: down 5.3% ($11.5 million), worse than the 3.4% drop last quarter
- Antares Vision sales contribution: $50.0 million, below the $55โ60 million target set last quarter
- DTT backlog excluding Antares Vision: $108.9 million by our math, down $23.8 million from last quarter
Both parts of the division missed expectations, so Crane NXT cut its full-year DTT growth plan from the low 20s to the high teens and lowered total company sales growth from 15โ17% to about 14%. Even after the cut, the outlook leaves about 31.5% DTT growth for the fourth quarter by our math.
What to watch: fourth-quarter DTT underlying sales growth. A reading below zero would break management's prior forecast for a fourth-quarter payment hardware rebound.
Acquisition Costs Pulled Reported Profit Down 24%
Crane NXT highlights profit per share excluding one-offs, which stayed flat from a year ago at $1.28, and raised the bottom of its full-year range by $0.10. Under standard accounting rules, however, net profit fell 24.0% to $38.4 million ($0.66 per share), and operating margin dropped 5.2 percentage points to 13.2%.
Deal-related expenses drove the decline across the income statement. Amortization of acquired intangible assets rose 1.6 percentage points of revenue to $25.6 million (5.2% of sales), while operating acquisition adjustments for inventory step-ups and Antares executive stock awards climbed 1.7 percentage points to $11.1 million (2.2% of sales). Inside DTT, adding lower-margin Antares revenue also pushed division EBITDA margin excluding one-offs down 4.3 percentage points to 28.0%.
What to watch: acquisition-related adjustments in the quarterly filing. Those charges have run for three straight years, and another jump in the fourth quarter would keep standard profit well below the headline figure.
Risks this quarter didn't answer
Four standing concerns received no update in the third-quarter earnings release because management provides detailed operating breakouts on the conference call and in the quarterly filing.
- New US $10 banknote launch: silent in the release after missing from last quarter's call; the conference call will show whether fourth-quarter revenue still depends on it.
- Standalone CPI profit and revenue: combined into DTT since the first quarter; the quarterly filing will show whether any further hardware breakdown appears.
- Currency backlog delivery schedule: total SAT backlog is $481.6 million, but the split between 2027 and 2028 deliveries lives in the filing's performance obligation note.
- Middle East freight and supply chain costs: flagged as a risk in last quarter's filing, with any updated cost impact due in the third-quarter filing.
๐ Other Themes
Ongoing Restructuring Across Both Divisions
Crane NXT recorded $6.2 million of restructuring charges in the third quarter ($12.9 million over nine months), up from $3.5 million a year ago. The company said these costs cover "severance charges associated with the integration of the DLR and OpSec businesses" in SAT and the "alignment of DTT's cost structure with existing economic conditions" as payment hardware demand stays weak.
๐ฒ Other KPIs
Order backlog โ contracted customer orders not yet shipped โ grew 28.5% from a year ago because of the Antares Vision buyout and international banknote wins. Compared with last quarter, however, backlog fell 5.3% ($40.0 million) as third-quarter shipments outpaced new orders in both divisions.
Inventories fell 9.1% ($21.7 million) from the second quarter after jumping earlier in the year when Antares Vision joined the balance sheet. Working down that stock helped release $39.4 million of operating working capital cash during the quarter.
Spending on property and equipment rose 62.4% from $13.3 million a year ago, reaching 4.3% of revenue compared with 2.7% in the second quarter. The company is adding micro-optics production lines in New Hampshire and Malta to meet international currency demand.
๐ฎ Guidance
Cut. The full-year sales plan dropped by 2 percentage points at the middle of the range because of lower DTT sales. By our math, that leaves about $511 million of sales for the fourth quarter (+7.1% from a year ago), down from the $530โ563 million implied three months ago.
Raised. Management lifted the banknote and authentication outlook for the second straight quarter, up from roughly 9.5% at the middle of the prior band. By our math, that implies fourth-quarter SAT sales fall about 9.5% against last year's record $260.9 million shipment quarter.
Cut. The inspection and payment division outlook dropped by about 3.5 percentage points after underlying sales fell 5.3% and Antares Vision added $50.0 million in the third quarter. By our math, hitting 18% for the year still requires DTT sales to grow about 31.5% in the fourth quarter.
Raised. Crane NXT lifted the bottom of the range by $0.10, pushing the middle up $0.05 to $4.37 (+7.6% from last year). It is the second raise this year (+$0.07 in Q2, +$0.05 in Q3). By our math, the middle of the range leaves $1.40 for the fourth quarter, up 10.2% from a year ago.
Unchanged. The full-year cash profit margin target stays at about 24%, with segment EBITDA margin also held at about 27%. After running at 23.0% for the first nine months, the full-year target requires fourth-quarter EBITDA margin excluding one-offs to reach about 26.6% by our math.
Improved. Management lowered the expected net financing cost range by $2.5 million at the middle after paying down $91.1 million of net debt in the quarter. Corporate expense (~$58 million), tax rate excluding one-offs (~21.5%), diluted shares (~58 million), and cash conversion (90% to 110%) all stayed unchanged.
โ Key Questions
Why did Antares Vision miss its third-quarter sales target?
Acquisitions in DTT added $50.0 million of revenue, below the $55โ60 million management guided on the last call. Investors need to know whether pharmaceutical inspection orders slipped into the fourth quarter or slowed down.
What drives the 31% fourth-quarter sales jump in DTT?
By our math, the high-teens full-year DTT outlook requires fourth-quarter division sales to rise about 31.5% from a year ago. Simultaneously, non-Antares DTT backlog fell by $23.8 million this quarter to $108.9 million.
When will the new US $10 banknote contribute revenue?
Management previously scheduled new $10 bill production for mid-2026 with a fourth-quarter revenue boost, but the third-quarter release did not mention it. Did the Raised SAT outlook include any new US currency shipments?
How much of the SAT backlog ships after 2027?
SAT backlog stands at $481.6 million, down $16.5 million from last quarter, while the full-year outlook points to a 9.5% fourth-quarter sales drop. Knowing the delivery split by year will clarify near-term shipment pace.
