Cognex Corporation (CGNX) Q3 2026 earnings review

Cognex profit jumps on cost cuts, and its outlook rises

Cognex Corporation, the maker of machine-vision cameras for factories and warehouses, grew sales while cutting its overhead costs. Third-quarter revenue rose 19% from a year ago excluding last year's one-time medical partnership, and profit margin before depreciation and one-offs reached 35.5%, beating the top of the company's plan. Finance chief Dennis Fehr raised the full-year outlook and issued a fourth-quarter plan that sits well above what the prior full-year plan implied by our math.

At a glance
Revenue ex 2025 partnership one-off$313M +19% from a year ago (+13% reported)
EBITDA margin, excluding one-offs35.5% +10.6 percentage points from a year ago
Profit per share, excluding one-offs$0.53 +61% from a year ago (+89% ex partnership)
Full-year revenue outlookRaised $13M middle of the range: 16% growth (17% ex partnership)

โš–๏ธ Verdict: ๐ŸŸข Bullish

The story got better because the new fourth-quarter plan removes the steep margin drop that the previous full-year outlook implied, while faster price increases covered higher memory chip costs a quarter early. Chief executive Matt Moschner also agreed to buy depth-camera maker RealSense in cash to expand into robotics. One caution: unpaid customer bills jumped 40% from a year ago while advance payments from customers shrank from last quarter.

The question now is whether Cognex's growth comes from a lasting expansion across factory and warehouse customers or a short burst of AI electronics spending. If growth is broad, customer deposits will rebuild and fourth-quarter sales will beat the 11% plan; if it is a brief wave, rising inventories and unpaid bills will weigh on cash flow. Tomorrow's conference call remarks on end markets and fourth-quarter collections will tell.

๐Ÿ‚ Bull Case

Cost Cuts Lift Profit Margin Past 35%

"We believe Q3 was another strong proof point for our profitable growth strategy," finance chief Dennis Fehr said. Cognex makes machine-vision cameras and software that inspect products on factory lines and in warehouses, and it has spent the year cutting overhead while sales recover.

The company expanded its EBITDA margin excluding one-offs (operating profit before depreciation, amortization and special items) to 35.5%, beating the top of its 32% to 35% plan. That marks a ninth straight quarter of expansion from a year ago.

  • Selling and administrative costs: 27.8% of revenue, down 6.3 percentage points from a year ago
  • Research and engineering costs: 10.8% of revenue, down 1.9 percentage points from a year ago
  • Operating expenses excluding one-offs: $116.5 million, down 6.9% from a year ago and down $2.5 million from last quarter by our math

This matters because the vision specialist is growing revenue at 19% on a like-for-like basis while spending less on overhead, which reflects "continued cost management activities, somewhat offset by higher sales commissions". Every new dollar of sales carried more than a dollar of profit.

What to watch: fourth-quarter operating expenses excluding one-offs in the next release. Another sequential drop would confirm the $35 million annual cost-saving plan finished on schedule.

Fourth-Quarter Plan Removes the Implied Margin Drop

Three months ago, Cognex issued its first full-year outlook alongside a third-quarter plan. By our math, subtracting the first three quarters from that full-year plan left fourth-quarter revenue growing about 7% and EBITDA margin excluding one-offs dropping to 26.7%.

Today the company replaced that math with an explicit fourth-quarter outlook. It plans for $270 million to $290 million in revenue, up 11% from a year ago at the middle of the range, and an EBITDA margin excluding one-offs of 29% to 32%. It also raised the full-year revenue range by $13 million.

The explicit plan eases the biggest standing worry from last quarter because it keeps the fourth-quarter margin near 30.5% at the middle of the range instead of dropping below 27%. Even so, fourth-quarter revenue growth slows from 19% like-for-like in the third quarter to 11% against last year's tougher comparison.

What to watch: fourth-quarter revenue against the $280 million middle of the range. A finish above $290 million would show year-end customer spending held up better than the seasonal slowdown the plan assumes.

Faster Price Increases Offset Memory Costs Early

Over the past two quarters, management warned that rising prices for memory chips inside its vision systems would hurt third-quarter gross margin by about 0.75 percentage points, with full price recovery waiting until 2027.

Instead, third-quarter gross margin rose 3.2 percentage points from a year ago to 70.8%, and gross margin excluding one-offs climbed 2.9 percentage points to 71.3%. Cognex said product mix, higher volume and "faster-than-expected pricing execution" drove the gain and "more than offset the expected memory cost headwinds in the quarter".

Passing higher component costs to factory customers a quarter early shows pricing power and takes pressure off the fourth quarter. Because the release does not separate how much came from price increases versus product mix, one quarter fades the memory cost worry rather than ending it.

What to watch: fourth-quarter gross margin excluding one-offs. Holding above 71% when seasonal electronics volume steps down would prove the price increases alone cover the higher chip costs.

New Semiconductor System and RealSense Deal

Chief executive Matt Moschner wants to make Cognex the leader in AI-powered machine vision and expand into robotics. This quarter the company launched the In-Sight 1750, "a next-generation wafer and panel identification system designed for the Semiconductor industry", and agreed to buy RealSense, "a leader in depth-sensing cameras and vision technology for robotic perception and physical artificial intelligence (AI)".

To prepare for the all-cash RealSense closing in the fourth quarter, the group sold corporate bonds and took a $2.4 million loss, shifting $432 million into liquid cash since December by our math so total cash and investments reached $846 million. Buying 3D depth cameras moves the business beyond 2D factory inspection, but the release gives no purchase price or revenue figure for RealSense.

What to watch: the purchase price and annual sales of RealSense when the deal closes in the fourth quarter. Those numbers will show how much cash the deal consumes and whether it dilutes next year's 31% profit margin.

Receivables Outpace Sales as Customer Deposits Shrink

Cognex reported record revenue of $313.4 million, up 13.2% from a year ago on a reported basis, and highlighted "broad-based strength across most major end markets". Because the company operates with only three to four months of order visibility and does not report backlog, its balance sheet is the only check on near-term customer commitments.

Two working-capital lines moved against the upbeat sales story this quarter. Unpaid customer bills rose three times as fast as revenue, while advance payments from customers shrank from last quarter.

  • Accounts receivable (unpaid customer bills): $216.7 million, up 40.2% from a year ago by our math against 13.2% revenue growth
  • Deferred revenue and customer deposits (cash paid in advance): $42.5 million, down $6.5 million from last quarter by our math
  • Unbilled revenue (work done but not yet billed): $12.8 million, down from $17.0 million at year-end

That matters because rising receivables mean more of the quarter's record sales shipped late in the period or on longer payment terms. At the same time, falling customer deposits leave a smaller cushion of pre-paid work heading into the slower fourth quarter.

What to watch: accounts receivable and deferred revenue on the fourth-quarter balance sheet. If receivables stay above $200 million while sales drop to the $280 million plan, cash collection is slowing.

๐Ÿ”ด persistent DISCLOSURE

Risks This Quarter Didn't Answer

Six standing concerns and watch items depend on end-market and customer disclosures that Cognex reserves for its conference call, slide presentation and quarterly filing rather than the earnings release.

  • Data center supply chain sales: not in the release; the call remarks will show whether growth stayed above 30% and moved beyond component inspection.
  • New customer additions: not in the release after 4,500 in the first half; the presentation will show whether the 9,000 annual pace held.
  • Logistics and consumer electronics trends: not broken out in the release; the call will test whether e-commerce warehouse orders moderated or electronics suffered from higher memory prices.
  • AI infrastructure concentration and general-purpose AI competition: no end-market split or competitive commentary in the release; the call Q&A will test both.
  • European automotive and China exposure: geographic revenue is absent from the release; the quarterly filing's footnote will show whether Europe kept shrinking.

๐Ÿ … raised from 29.0โ€“31.0%
โ‡— accelerating

Raised. The middle of the range moved up 1.5 percentage points to 31.5%, which is 10 percentage points above 2025 reported results and 10.8 points above 2025 excluding the partnership one-off. Nine-month margin already sits at 31.8%, so the full-year target is well within reach.

FY2026 Adjusted diluted EPS $1.68โ€“1.72
๐Ÿ … raised from $1.64โ€“1.68
โ‡— accelerating

Raised. Cognex lifted the range by 4 cents to $1.70 at the middle, representing 67% growth from a year ago and 75% growth excluding last year's partnership benefit. Nine-month profit per share excluding one-offs has already reached $1.31.

โ“ Key Questions

What are the price and sales of RealSense?

Cognex sold corporate bonds at a $2.4 million loss and shifted $432 million into liquid cash to fund the all-cash RealSense acquisition in Q4, but did not disclose the purchase price, revenue or profit margin of the business.

Why did accounts receivable jump 40% from a year ago?

Unpaid customer bills reached $216.7 million, growing three times as fast as reported revenue while customer deposits fell $6.5 million from Q2. Investors need to know whether shipments bunched at quarter-end or payment terms lengthened.

How fast did data center sales grow in Q3?

Last quarter management said data center supply chain revenue was a low single-digit share of sales growing over 30%. The release omits end-market figures, leaving open whether rack-assembly inspection started converting.

How many new customers joined in the third quarter?

Cognex added 4,500 customers in the first half toward its goal of doubling the customer base over five years, but did not report the third-quarter count or the total customer base in the release.
