Chain Bridge Bancorp, Inc. (CBNA) Q3 2026 earnings review
Chain Bridge Bancorp profit more than doubles, but campaign deposits shrink
Chain Bridge Bancorp, a bank for political campaigns, rode peak election cash to record profit even as clients started spending their funds. Net interest income rose 62% from a year ago to $19.9 million because checking deposits cost the bank almost nothing and sat earning interest at the Federal Reserve. That pushed profit per share up 131% to $1.66.
| Net interest income | $19.9M +62% from a year ago |
|---|---|
| Profit per share | $1.66 $0.72 a year ago |
| Combined on- and off-balance-sheet deposits | $2.56B -$106M from last quarter |
| Fourth-quarter deposit outlook | Unchanged outflows underway into early 2027 |
โ๏ธ Verdict: โช Neutral
The story is unchanged because the third quarter marks the peak of the two-year federal election cycle, and the expected outflow has begun. While on-balance-sheet deposits ticked up, off-balance-sheet deposits placed through the IntraFi network dropped by $170 million as campaign clients spent money ahead of the November vote. One positive: the bank grew its loan book by 11% from June and expanded its wealth management assets.
The question now is how much cash stays at the bank after the November election concludes. Either social welfare groups and new wealth clients leave Chain Bridge with a higher deposit base than in past cycles, or campaign withdrawals drain earning assets back toward 2025 levels. Fourth-quarter and first-quarter deposit balances will tell.
๐ Bull Case
Free Campaign Cash Lifted Interest Income
Chain Bridge Bancorp, a Virginia bank serving political campaigns and social welfare groups, takes in large sums of noninterest-bearing deposits before federal elections. The bank holds this cash at the Federal Reserve or in short-term U.S. Treasury bonds. Because depositors earn no interest on these checking accounts, the lender keeps almost the entire yield.
- Net interest income (interest earned minus interest paid): $19.9 million, up 61.8% from a year ago by our math
- Average noninterest-bearing demand deposits: $1.76 billion, up from $898.7 million a year ago
- Net interest margin (interest profit as a share of earning assets): 3.53%, up 0.18 percentage points from a year ago
- Cost of funds: 0.13%, down from 0.35% a year ago
The company parked an average of $914.5 million at other banks and $979.7 million in taxable bonds during the quarter. That cash generated $7.6 million more in net interest income than a year ago, which drove profit per share up 130.6% by our math to $1.66.
What to watch: average noninterest-bearing demand deposits in the fourth-quarter report. A drop back toward last year's $900 million level would cut quarterly interest income next year.
Operating Leverage Cut the Cost Ratio
Chain Bridge runs a branchless model from a single office in McLean, Virginia, so it can handle large deposit inflows without adding many tellers or buildings. Total net revenue (net interest income plus fee income) rose 73.6% from a year ago to $22.8 million by our math, while noninterest operating expenses grew 16.3% to $8.5 million.
Salaries and employee benefits, the largest cost line, fell by 11.9 percentage points of net revenue from a year ago to 22.6% by our math, while professional services fell 0.9 percentage points to 3.3%. That lowered the efficiency ratio (operating expenses as a share of net revenue) from 55.79% a year ago to 37.40%, lifting annualized return on average equity to 22.84%.
What to watch: quarterly salaries and employee benefits in the fourth quarter. If payroll stays above $5.1 million while election revenue leaves, the efficiency ratio will climb back above 50%.
Wealth Management Grows Outside the Election Cycle
The Trust and Wealth Department manages investments and holds custody accounts for clients. While custody balances fluctuate with campaign cash, assets under management (AUM, client portfolios the bank actively invests for a fee) provide steady revenue.
Custody assets fell $44.1 million from last quarter to $471.4 million as political clients withdrew funds, the company said. However, AUM rose $3.9 million during the quarter to $261.2 million, up 33.2% from a year ago by our math, because new client accounts outpaced lower market prices. That lifted wealth fee income 38.3% from a year ago to $491 thousand.
What to watch: assets under management at year-end. Continued inflows during the fourth-quarter political exodus would show that wealth fees can grow through post-election slowdowns.
๐ป Bear Case
Pre-Election Deposit Outflows Have Already Begun
On-balance-sheet deposits rose $63.5 million from June to $2.06 billion, which makes the deposit base look like it is still expanding. However, Chain Bridge also places excess client cash at other banks through IntraFi Cash Service (ICS) One-Way Sell accounts, keeping those balances off its balance sheet to earn placement fees without tying up capital.
- Off-balance-sheet ICS One-Way Sell deposits: $498.5 million, down $169.5 million from June
- On-balance-sheet deposits: $2.06 billion, up $63.5 million from June
- Combined deposit flow: a net outflow of $106.0 million during the third quarter by our math
- Deposit placement fee income: $2.0 million, down from $2.1 million in the second quarter
The off-balance-sheet drop happened early, "primarily reflecting reductions in political organization deposit balances", the company said. Management added that political accounts are "currently experiencing outflows, which the Company expects to continue during the fourth quarter of 2026, with the possibility of outflows extending into early 2027".
What to watch: combined on- and off-balance-sheet deposits at December 31. That figure will show the full size of the election cycle drawdown and set the earning-asset base for 2027.
Lower Fed Rates Cut Cash Yields
Because political deposits can leave on short notice before an election, the bank keeps almost half of its earning assets in overnight reserves at the Federal Reserve. At quarter-end, interest-bearing reserves at the central bank stood at $1.03 billion, or 45.5% of total assets by our math.
The bank earned 3.76% on deposits at other banks this quarter, down 0.67 percentage points from 4.43% a year ago. As the release noted, "lower short-term interest rates compared to the third quarter of 2025 partially tempered the increase" in interest income, and placement fees on off-balance-sheet deposits also move with the federal funds rate.
What to watch: the average yield on interest-bearing deposits in other banks next quarter. Any further central bank rate cuts will immediately reduce the return on Chain Bridge's largest asset class.
๐ Other Themes
Higher Bond Yields Cut Securities Values
Chain Bridge holds $678.4 million of available-for-sale bonds. During the first nine months of 2026, unrealized losses on these bonds reduced stockholders' equity by $4.9 million, pushing accumulated other comprehensive loss to $8.4 million. The company said this reflected "reduced fair values of available for sale investment securities as intermediate- and longer-term market interest rates, including U.S. Treasury yields, rose during 2026".
๐ฒ Other KPIs
Gross loans rose 11.0% from last quarter and 7.2% from a year ago by our math, reversing four quarters of flat or shrinking balances. "The increase in the provision for loan credit losses reflected loan growth during the quarter", the company said, as it set aside $507 thousand for loan losses. The loan-to-deposit ratio rose to 14.74% from 13.70% in June.
The Tier 1 leverage ratio (core capital as a percentage of average total assets) fell from 9.39% in June and 11.34% a year ago. Retained earnings lifted Tier 1 capital to $200.2 million, but political deposit inflows expanded the balance sheet faster than equity grew. Total risk-based capital remains high at 48.36% because cash at the Fed carries zero risk weight.
Book value per share (stockholders' equity divided by shares outstanding) rose 4.5% from June and 17.6% from a year ago by our math. Nine-month net income added $27.5 million to retained earnings, which more than offset the $4.9 million increase in unrealized bond losses. Share count stayed unchanged at 6.56 million across Class A and Class B stock.
๐ฎ Guidance
Unchanged. Chain Bridge does not issue numerical targets, but reiterated its seasonal plan for campaign accounts ahead of the November 2026 elections. Political deposits are "currently experiencing outflows, which the Company expects to continue during the fourth quarter of 2026, with the possibility of outflows extending into early 2027", the bank said. Management added that outflows so far match past election cycles.
โ Key Questions
How much did political deposits fall in October?
Campaign spending peaks in the final weeks before the November election. Knowing the October outflow pace would show how much of the $2.56 billion combined deposit base will remain by year-end.
What drove the $30 million third-quarter loan growth?
Gross loans grew 11.0% in a single quarter after shrinking last year, while one residential mortgage went on nonaccrual and was sold. Management did not say whether commercial or mortgage lending drove the new balances.
How much deposit growth came from 501(c)(4) groups?
The bank credited 501(c)(4) social welfare organizations alongside political campaigns for the year-over-year deposit and custody inflows, but did not split the balances. Social welfare accounts may prove less seasonal than campaign funds.
Will the bank convert off-balance-sheet deposits back onto the balance sheet?
Chain Bridge holds $498.5 million in off-balance-sheet ICS deposits and has the right to convert them into on-balance-sheet deposits. As campaign cash leaves in the fourth quarter, pulling those accounts onto the balance sheet could protect net interest income.
