Bruker (BRKR) Q3 2026 earnings review

Bruker profit jumps on cost cuts, while sales barely grow

Bruker, the maker of high-end scientific and medical instruments, lifted its profit margins through cost cuts while its equipment sales barely grew. Underlying sales edged up less than 1%, as superconducting wire demand offset a slight drop in lab instruments, while lower overhead pushed profit per share excluding one-offs up 24%. Chief executive Frank Laukien kept the full-year underlying outlook intact, which by our math leaves underlying sales growth accelerating to 6% in the fourth quarter.

⚖️ Verdict: 🟢 Bullish

The story got better because the cost cuts lifted operating margins by 4 percentage points without the big tariff refunds that helped the second quarter, and US university demand finally began to recover. The bad news: the company took another $175 million acquisition write-down, and flat third-quarter instrument sales leave a record fourth-quarter delivery hurdle intact.

The question now is whether the five-quarter build in instrument orders will convert into $1 billion of fourth-quarter revenue on time. Either customer labs and chip factories are ready to accept the big year-end systems, or installation delays will push deliveries into next year for a third straight year. Fourth-quarter shipments and profit per share will settle it.

🐂 Bull Case

🟢🟢 strengthening MARGIN

Cost Cuts Lifted Operating Margin Four Points

Bruker has spent the past year cutting overhead to rebuild profit after a weak 2025. Chief executive Frank Laukien said: "In the third quarter, we achieved very significant margin expansion and non-GAAP EPS growth, driven by our focus on cost discipline and execution." That effort paid off this quarter even though sales barely grew.

  • Operating margin excluding one-offs: 16.3%, up 4.0 percentage points from a year ago
  • Gross margin excluding one-offs: 51.3%, up 1.2 percentage points
  • Selling and administrative costs excluding one-offs: 24.5% of sales, down 1.9 percentage points
  • Research and development costs: 10.5% of sales, down 0.9 percentage points

The margin jump matters because the second quarter included temporary US tariff refunds that did not repeat at the same scale. Cutting selling and research budgets allowed the lab-equipment maker to grow profit per share excluding one-offs by 24.4% to $0.56 on just 1.6% sales growth. What to watch: fourth-quarter operating margin excluding one-offs. Keeping the full-year margin target on track will confirm the cost savings hold without tariff refunds.

Instrument Orders Topped Sales Again

Bruker Scientific Instruments (BSI), the main division that makes lab systems for drug discovery, medical diagnostics and chipmaking, has waited for rising customer orders to turn into revenue. Laukien said "Bruker’s positive booking trends continued with the fifth consecutive quarter of Bruker Scientific Instruments (BSI) book-to-bill greater than one" — meaning new orders again exceeded shipments. He also noted "strengthening demand in most of our end markets, and in Q3 also in the US academic market", where university labs had cut spending for six straight quarters.

Both underlying bookings and the order backlog in the instruments division rose by a mid-single-digit percentage over the first nine months of the year. Still, nine-month bookings growth sits below the 10% pace reported in the second quarter alone, and the release gave no separate figure for chipmaking tool orders. What to watch: fourth-quarter instrument shipments. Turning that five-quarter order backlog into delivered systems is the only way to hit the year-end sales target.

🟢 strengthening PRODUCT

Superconductor Demand Carried Top-Line Growth

While lab instrument sales stalled, Bruker Energy & Supercon Technologies (BEST) — the division that makes superconducting materials for magnetic resonance imaging scanners and energy research — carried the quarter. Multi-year orders booked earlier this year are now turning into deliveries. Division sales rose 11.2% from a year ago to $82.1 million, and underlying sales excluding currency and acquisitions grew 11.8%.

That growth offset a 0.4% underlying sales decline in the much larger scientific instruments division, allowing total company underlying sales to edge up 0.7%. Over the first nine months, the superconductor unit grew 8.3% on an underlying basis while scientific instruments shrank 1.0%. What to watch: whether superconductor growth stays above 10% in the fourth quarter, because any slowdown would leave the company reliant on delayed lab-instrument installations.

🔴🔴 persistent GROWTH contradicts narrative

Full-Year Plan Still Needs a Record Fourth Quarter

Laukien said that with instrument orders and backlog up, "we expect revenue growth acceleration, continued margin expansion and double-digit EPS growth in FY27." Before 2027 arrives, the company must clear a steep fourth-quarter hurdle after keeping its 2026 underlying sales and profit outlook unchanged.

  • Fourth-quarter sales implied by the full-year outlook: $1.00 billion at the middle of the range, a company record by our math
  • Fourth-quarter underlying sales growth implied by the outlook: about 6.0% by our math, up from 0.7% in the third quarter
  • Fourth-quarter profit per share excluding one-offs implied by the outlook: $0.765 at the middle of the range, up 30% from a year ago by our math

This fourth-quarter concentration is risky because underlying sales in the core scientific instruments division just fell 0.4% in the third quarter, and Bruker Nano — the unit that sells chipmaking and microscopic tools — saw reported revenue fall 1.3% to $263.1 million. In each of the past two years, delayed customer site readiness pushed fourth-quarter deliveries out. What to watch: fourth-quarter underlying sales growth, which will settle whether the backlog converts on time.

Acquisition Write-Downs Reached $309 Million This Year

Bruker bought several cellular analysis, spatial biology and lab-automation businesses in 2024, and it has written down their value repeatedly over the past year. After reorganization-triggered accounting tests in July, the company recorded another $174.5 million non-cash goodwill write-down in the third quarter, equal to 20.0% of quarterly revenue. That follows a $134.9 million write-down in the second quarter and $119.4 million of write-downs in the third quarter of 2025.

Total goodwill write-downs reached $309.4 million for the first nine months of 2026. Along with $20.0 million of acquisition-related costs in the third quarter, those charges pushed the company to a GAAP operating loss of $91.0 million and a GAAP loss of $0.81 per share. What to watch: the segment footnote in the upcoming quarterly filing, which will show which newly reorganized divisions took the $174.5 million charge and how much cushion remains.

🔴 persistent DISCLOSURE

Risks this quarter didn't answer

Because the preliminary earnings release omits the balance sheet, cash flow statement and product-level order rates, three standing concerns cannot be read yet.

  • Chipmaking tool orders: not quantified in the release after growing more than 50% in the second quarter; the conference call remarks will show if artificial-intelligence chip demand held up.
  • Cash flow and debt: free cash flow (minus $59.2 million in the first half) and net debt (2.8 times earnings at mid-year) await the quarterly filing.
  • Spatial biology and automation losses: operating losses at the 2024 acquisitions and their 2026 breakeven goal await the filing and call.

Currency Swings Trimmed the Reported Sales Plan

Foreign currency translation shifted from a 1.5% boost over the first nine months to a 0.8% drag in the third quarter. As a result, Bruker trimmed its full-year reported sales outlook by $15 million at the middle of the range, to $3.52–$3.56 billion. The company now expects currency to have no net effect on full-year sales, down from a 0.5% boost three months ago.

new GOVERNANCE

Bruker Reshuffled Its Lab Instrument Divisions

On July 1, Bruker reorganized its scientific instruments business to "streamline its organizational structure and further facilitate decision making, accountability, customer focus, and innovation". It replaced the old BioSpin and CALID units with BSI Biosystems ($397.2 million in third-quarter sales, up 1.5%) and BSI Microbiology and Infection Diagnostics ($133.6 million, up 2.6%), while keeping BSI Nano ($263.1 million, down 1.3%) and the superconductor unit.

🔮 Guidance

FY26 Reported revenue $3.52–$3.56 billion
🠇 cut from $3.54–$3.57 billion
⇗ accelerating

Cut. The middle of the range moved down $15 million, to about 3.0% reported growth, because a 0.5% currency boost disappeared. It is the second currency-driven trim this year after a $30 million cut last quarter: $0M, -$30M, -$15M. By our math, the plan leaves $1.00 billion of sales for the fourth quarter, up 2.8% from a year ago.

FY26 Sales from businesses owned a year ago +1% to +2%
🠆 unchanged from +1% to +2%
⇗ accelerating

Unchanged. Management kept its underlying sales growth plan at 1% to 2% for the fourth consecutive quarter. Because underlying sales shrank 0.3% over the first nine months, the middle of the full-year range leaves about 6.0% underlying growth for the fourth quarter by our math, against an easy comparison of minus 5.1% a year ago.

FY26 Constant-currency and acquisition revenue growth +2.5% to +3.5% CER (~1.5% M&A)
🠆 unchanged from +2.5% to +3.5% CER (~1.5% M&A)
⇗ accelerating

Unchanged. Sales growth excluding currency swings stays at 2.5% to 3.5%, with acquisitions adding about 1.5%. Over the first nine months, constant-currency sales grew 1.6% and acquisitions added 1.9%, so the fourth quarter must accelerate as recent deals pass their one-year anniversary.

FY26 Profit per share, excluding one-offs $2.10–$2.15
🠆 unchanged from $2.10–$2.15
⇗ accelerating

Unchanged. The plan still calls for 15% to 17% growth over last year's $1.83. With $1.36 earned in the first nine months, the middle of the range leaves $0.765 for the fourth quarter by our math — up 30% from $0.59 a year ago, requiring record fourth-quarter shipments.

❓ Key Questions

Did chipmaking tool orders slow in the third quarter?

In the first half, semiconductor metrology orders grew more than 30% and second-quarter orders rose more than 50%. The third-quarter release gave no figure while Bruker Nano revenue fell 1.3%, leaving open whether chipmakers are pausing orders.

Which divisions took the $174.5 million goodwill write-down?

Bruker wrote down $134.9 million of goodwill in the second quarter across lab automation and spatial biology, then took another $174.5 million charge in the third quarter after reorganizing its segments. Investors need to know how much acquisition goodwill remains at risk.

How much of the $1.00 billion fourth quarter is in backlog?

Hitting the middle of the full-year sales outlook requires $1,004 million in the fourth quarter, above the company's all-time high of $980 million. After chip-tool and high-field magnet delays in each of the past two years, installation readiness will decide the year.

Did operating cash flow turn positive in the third quarter?

The preliminary release omits the balance sheet and cash flow statement. Operating cash flow was minus $6.2 million in the first half and net debt stood at 2.8 times earnings at mid-year, so cash generation in the second half is critical.
