Bel Fuse (BELFB) Q3 2026 earnings review
Bel Fuse data-center sales jump, while defense margins slip
Bel Fuse, a maker of power and connectivity parts, is getting a bigger boost from data centers than from defense. Third-quarter revenue rose 23%, and Class B profit per share excluding one-offs grew 47% as debt payoff wiped out interest costs. Chief executive Farouq Tuweiq set a fourth-quarter sales plan that points to 31% growth at the middle of the range by our math.
| Revenue | $220.5M +23.2% from a year ago |
|---|---|
| Gross margin | 40.9% +1.2 percentage points from a year ago |
| Class B profit per share, excluding one-offs | $3.07 +47% from a year ago |
| Q4 sales outlook | $220โ240M middle of the range: +31% growth |
โ๏ธ Verdict: ๐ข Bullish
The story got better because the fourth-quarter outlook defies the usual holiday slowdown and Industrial and Data gross margin jumped nearly 5 percentage points. The bad news: Aerospace and Defense gross margin fell 1.5 percentage points despite earlier price hikes, and overhead costs topped management's target.
The question now is whether rising shipments to distributors and data centers reflect lasting end-customer demand or a restocking peak. If end demand is driving orders, the backlog will hold near $595 million; if restocking is peaking, the 35% rise in inventories will weigh on future production. The order backlog and channel sales figures in the upcoming Form 10-Q filing will tell.
๐ Bull Case
Industrial and Data Segment Carries Growth and Margins
Bel Fuse makes power supplies, connectors and circuit protection parts. Its Industrial Technology and Data Solutions (ITDS) division sells those parts into factories, networking gear and high-performance computing data centers. Critics worry that data center demand rests on a small number of big customers whose buying schedules can pause without warning, and the company no longer breaks out artificial-intelligence sales on their own.
Chief executive Farouq Tuweiq said third-quarter growth ran "with performance led by our Data Solutions sector, Industrials end market, and across our distribution partners". The ITDS division overtook the defense unit to become the electronics maker's largest business and its highest-margin one. Across the company, the cost of making products fell by 1.2 percentage points of revenue from a year ago.
- ITDS sales: $113.9 million, up 37.8% from a year ago and up 13.7% from last quarter by our math
- ITDS gross margin: 42.7%, up 4.7 percentage points from a year ago and up 3.9 points from last quarter
- Company gross margin: 40.9%, up 1.2 percentage points from a year ago
What to watch: the end-market sales table in the upcoming quarterly Form 10-Q filing. A further jump in data solutions sales would confirm that high-performance computing orders are driving the margin gain.
Fourth-Quarter Plan Defies the Usual Holiday Dip
Fourth-quarter sales at the component maker usually dip or flatten because factories and customers close for the holidays. Last year, fourth-quarter revenue slipped 1.7% from the third quarter, to $175.9 million.
Tuweiq broke that seasonal pattern for the coming quarter: "Looking ahead, we expect a strong fourth quarter, guiding net sales of $220 million to $240 million and gross margin of 40.0% to 42.0%." At the $230 million middle of the range, sales would rise 30.7% from a year ago and 4.3% from the third quarter by our math. That accelerates from the third quarter's 23.2% yearly growth even as the comparison gets easier.
What to watch: fourth-quarter revenue against the $230 million middle of the range. Bel Fuse has beaten its revenue midpoint for four straight quarters by an average of 2.7% by our math, so a finish near $236 million would show that order conversion remains fast.
Zero Debt Turns Interest From Drag to Boost
In May 2026, Bel Fuse raised $441.6 million by selling new Class B shares and paid off all $197.5 million of its credit line. Skeptics argue that holding so much cash creates pressure to buy other companies in a market Tuweiq has called expensive. In the third quarter, cash rose by another $27.0 million from June to $333.1 million, while long-term debt stayed at zero.
Because the company now earns interest on cash instead of paying it on debt, net interest swung by $6.1 million from a year ago by our math, from a $3.4 million net expense to $2.7 million of net interest income. What to watch: cash deployed on acquisitions after the early-2027 buyout of the remaining 20% stake in Enercon, its defense power subsidiary. A pricey deal would validate the cash-deployment concern.
๐ป Bear Case
Aerospace and Defense Segment Margin Slipped Again
Aerospace, Defense and Rugged Solutions (ADRS) makes high-reliability power units and connectors for aircraft and military gear. On last quarter's call, management said price increases placed on new orders in February and March would lift third-quarter margins, especially in ADRS, while foreign-currency pressure from the Israeli shekel and Chinese renminbi had stabilized.
Instead, the division's profitability went the other way. ADRS sales grew 10.7% from a year ago to $106.6 million, but fell 3.5% from the second quarter by our math. Its gross margin dropped 1.5 percentage points from a year ago to 39.6%, down from 41.1% in the second quarter and 41.5% in the first. That drop cuts against the claim that springtime price hikes would quickly offset raw material and currency costs in defense.
What to watch: ADRS gross margin in the fourth quarter and commentary on the conference call. A reading below 40% again would show that long defense backlogs are delaying the price recovery into 2027.
Inventory Build and Distribution Recovery Raise Cycle Risk
Bel Fuse sells both directly to equipment makers and through electronic-part distributors. Distributor sales have rebounded to their highest level since mid-2022, and Tuweiq again credited distribution partners for third-quarter momentum. While that recovery drives sales today, the last peak in mid-2022 preceded a two-year inventory glut when distributors stopped ordering.
To support orders, the manufacturer has built up its own stockroom. Inventories reached $224.7 million in September, up 35.3% from a year ago and up 12.2% from June by our math. Stock on hand now equals 101.9% of quarterly sales, up from 92.8% a year ago, and that $56.5 million nine-month inventory build absorbed cash. What to watch: distributor sales in the Form 10-Q filing; a drop from the second quarter's $56.4 million would signal that restocking has peaked.
Enercon Buyout Bill Grows and Overheads Top Target
Bel Fuse owns 80% of Enercon and plans to buy the remaining 20% in early 2027 at a price tied to Enercon's profit. As Enercon performs well, the buyout price rises, and accounting rules deduct that increase from net income attributable to Bel Fuse shareholders.
- Enercon buyout liability: $114.0 million on the balance sheet, up $20.9 million since December by our math
- Third-quarter buyout adjustment: $11.8 million, or $0.83 per Class B share
- Selling, general and administrative expense: $39.4 million, above the $34โ35 million target set last quarter
Although selling and overhead costs fell by 0.4 percentage points of revenue from a year ago to 17.9%, the dollar spend beat the company's ceiling. Together with the Enercon charge and 14.0% share dilution, Class B diluted earnings per share rose 3.4% to $1.83, while Class B profit per share excluding one-offs rose 46.9% to $3.07. What to watch: the final cash payout for the 20% Enercon stake in early 2027; a higher bill leaves less cash for other deals.
Risks this quarter didn't answer
Six standing items from prior quarters cannot be read from the preliminary earnings release and await the conference call or the Form 10-Q filing.
- Order backlog and book-to-bill ratio: stood at $594.7 million in June; the Form 10-Q will show if orders kept outpacing shipments.
- European defense wins in Slovakia: 10 cumulative project wins through June with first revenue due in late 2027; the call will test if wins continued.
- Transportation and e-mobility demand: down 20.6% in the first half; the Form 10-Q end-market note will show if the slump entered a fifth quarter.
- Operations in Israel and trade tariffs: Enercon manufactures in Israel and 25% of global sales face potential tariff rules; the filing will detail any cost impact.
- Dual-class share structure: the board's promised response on the economic gap between Class A and Class B shares remains pending after three quarters.
๐ฒ Other KPIs
Free cash flow โ operating cash flow minus property and equipment purchases โ rose 37.8% from a year ago in the third quarter by our math, lifting nine-month free cash flow 29.3% to $54.9 million. Third-quarter capital spending hit $6.1 million by our math, already topping the first half's $4.9 million as planned.
Combined Class A and Class B diluted shares rose 14.0% from a year ago and 6.1% from the second quarter by our math. The increase reflects the full-quarter impact of the May 2026 stock offering, which raised $441.6 million to wipe out debt but diluted per-share earnings.
The tax rate moved back toward normal from 10.0% in the second quarter, when discrete stock-vesting and tax-reserve benefits lowered the bill. It remains 1.8 percentage points below the 19.5% rate a year ago, helping lift nine-month net earnings.
๐ฎ Guidance
New. The plan calls for 30.7% growth from a year ago and 4.3% growth from the third quarter at the $230 million middle of the range by our math. That breaks the usual fourth-quarter holiday dip and laps a 17.4% growth rate from a year ago. Bel Fuse has beaten its sales midpoint four quarters in a row; if the pattern holds, fourth-quarter sales would reach about $236.2 million by our math.
New. The 41.0% middle of the range sits 0.1 percentage points above the third quarter's 40.9% and 1.6 points above last year's fourth quarter. The electronic-components group has finished near or above the top of its gross-margin range for four straight quarters.
โ Key Questions
Why did Aerospace and Defense gross margin fall to 39.6%?
Management said earlier price increases would help third-quarter margins and currency pressure had stabilized, yet the defense unit's gross margin dropped 1.5 percentage points from both a year ago and the second quarter.
What drove selling and overhead costs $4.4 million above target?
Selling, general and administrative expenses reached $39.4 million, well above the $34 million to $35 million quarterly run rate management guided on last quarter's call.
Did the order backlog grow above June's $594.7 million?
With third-quarter shipments at a record $220.5 million and fourth-quarter sales planned at $230 million at the middle of the range, investors need to know if bookings stayed above shipments for a seventh quarter.
How much of the $224.7 million inventory sits for distributors?
Inventories jumped 35.3% from a year ago while distributor sales sit near their 2022 peak, raising the risk of an inventory overhang if distributor restocking slows.
