Balchem (BCPC) Q3 2026 earnings review

Balchem's feed profit nearly doubles, while its inventories keep climbing

Balchem, a maker of specialty nutrients for food and animal feed, grew profit faster than sales across all three divisions. Revenue rose 9% from a year ago to a record $291 million, while profit per share excluding one-offs climbed 16% on better factory efficiency, lower interest costs, and share buybacks. Chief executive Ted Harris highlighted record operating profit in Human Nutrition and an 83% profit jump in Animal Nutrition.

At a glance
Revenue$290.7M +8.6% from a year ago
Profit per share, excluding one-offs$1.57 +16.3% from a year ago
Animal Nutrition operating profit$6.8M +82.8% from a year ago
Inventories$177.0M +35% since December by our math

โš–๏ธ Verdict: ๐ŸŸข Bullish

The story got better because gross margin expanded by 0.7 percentage points despite higher raw material costs, and Animal Nutrition margins jumped over 4 points by our math on European tariff relief. One caution: inventories have risen 35% since December to $177 million without explanation in the release, tying up cash and slowing nine-month operating cash flow growth.

The question now is how much of Animal Nutrition's recovery is lasting volume growth versus a one-time price reset from European duties that laps early next year. If volume is driving the gains, double-digit growth can continue; if price did most of the work, growth will slow in 2027. The volume and price breakdown in the third-quarter filing will tell.

๐Ÿ‚ Bull Case

๐ŸŸข๐ŸŸข strengthening GROWTH

Animal Nutrition Profit Nearly Doubled on Duty Recovery

Animal Nutrition and Health makes feed ingredients for livestock and pets. Since European Union anti-dumping duties on Chinese choline took effect late last year, the division has recovered lost volume and pricing, though critics warn that about half of this gain is a one-time price step that will lap early next year.

In the third quarter, Balchem reported "higher sales in both the monogastric and ruminant species markets", which cover poultry and swine as well as dairy cows. Segment sales rose 11.7% from a year ago to $63.0 million, while operating profit jumped 82.8% to $6.8 million.

That profit jump lifted the division's operating margin by 4.2 percentage points to 10.8%, by our math. However, revenue growth slowed from 15.0% in the second quarter even against an easy 6.6% comparison from a year ago, and the release does not split price from volume.

What to watch: the volume and price breakdown in the quarterly filing. A drop in volume growth toward 2 percentage points would show the recovery is mostly a one-time price reset.

๐ŸŸข strengthening MARGIN

Factory Efficiencies Lifted Margin Despite Input Costs

Higher raw material costs tied to Middle East supply chains have pressured Balchem's factories all year, limiting gross margin expansion to just 0.1 percentage points last quarter. Chief executive Ted Harris said the ingredient maker "delivered another excellent quarter" with record profit across all three divisions.

Gross margin rose 0.7 percentage points from a year ago to 36.4% because cost of sales, the cost of making its products, fell from 64.3% to 63.6% of revenue by our math. Operating expenses, which cover selling and overhead, fell 0.4 percentage points to 14.9% of revenue, lifting operating margin by 1.1 points to 21.5%.

Balchem attributed the gross margin gain to "sales growth, favorable mix and manufacturing efficiencies, partially offset by certain higher manufacturing input costs". Because Human Nutrition and Health grew 8.1% to a record $188.2 million with "higher sales within both the nutrients business and the food ingredients and solutions businesses", higher-margin nutrients kept pulling company profitability up.

What to watch: fourth-quarter gross margin against last year's 35.6%. Holding above 36% would confirm that factory efficiencies and product mix are outrunning raw material inflation.

๐ŸŸข strengthening CAPITAL ALLOCATION

Buybacks and Debt Paydown Boosted Per-Share Profit

Without major acquisitions over the past year, Balchem has directed its cash flow into repurchasing stock and paying down its revolving credit line. The nutrition group highlighted a "balanced capital allocation strategy" after spending $127 million on buybacks over the past twelve months.

  • Third-quarter stock buybacks: $27.4 million in cash, reducing diluted shares by 1.7% from a year ago to 32.0 million by our math
  • Net debt paydown: $28.0 million in the quarter, cutting net debt to $57.7 million, or 0.2 times trailing profit
  • Net interest expense: $1.9 million, down from $2.6 million a year ago

Lower interest costs and a smaller share count turned a 13.7% rise in operating profit into a 17.7% increase in diluted profit per share, which reached $1.46 (or $1.57 excluding one-offs, up 16.3% by our math). What to watch: fourth-quarter share repurchases. Another $25 million or more would show management is still retiring shares despite near-zero net debt.

๐Ÿป Bear Case

๐Ÿ”ด๐Ÿ”ด persistent CASH contradicts narrative

Inventories Rose Four Times Faster Than Sales

Balchem's balance sheet has carried a growing stockpile of unsold goods and raw materials this year, which management has not explained in its earnings releases. By the end of the second quarter, inventories had already climbed 22.9% from the start of the year.

In the third quarter, inventories rose another $15.5 million to $177.0 million. By our math, that is up 34.7% since December 2025 and up 33.7% from a year ago, while nine-month sales grew 9.3%. Working capital tied up $31.5 million of cash over the first nine months, more than double last year's $12.9 million outflow.

That inventory build cuts against the company's cash generation narrative because nine-month operating cash flow rose only 4.9% to $156.5 million even though net earnings rose 13.8%. What to watch: the raw-materials versus finished-goods breakdown in the quarterly filing. A jump in finished goods would signal slower customer orders rather than a deliberate raw-material buffer.

๐Ÿ”ด persistent DISCLOSURE

Risks this quarter didn't answer

Five standing concerns and watch items received no numbers or updates in the third-quarter press release because Balchem provides no forward financial table and reserves sub-segment details for its conference call and filing.

  • No financial outlook: the release gives no revenue, profit, or margin forecast for the fourth quarter or full year.
  • Human Nutrition sub-segment split: growth rates for branded nutrients versus food ingredients were not disclosed; the conference call Q&A will test whether management shares them.
  • Orange County microencapsulation plant: no update on the $36 million capacity expansion for a second straight quarter; the annual filing will show whether the 2027 start date holds.
  • European duty circumvention: no comment on whether competitors are routing choline around European Union tariffs; fourth-quarter European volumes will test durability.
  • CureMark autism drug filing: unmentioned for a fifth straight quarter; any regulatory filing update remains outside Balchem's control.

New Nutrient Science Headed to Trade Show

Balchem promotes its branded human nutrients โ€” including VitaCholine for brain health, K2VITAL for bone and heart health, Optifolin+ for cellular health, and OptiMSM for joint support โ€” through clinical studies and consumer marketing. The company said it will showcase "new science supporting" those four brands at the upcoming SupplySide Global trade show, though the release did not specify whether this includes the awaited clinical study on choline and adult memory.

๐Ÿ’ฒ Other KPIs

Free cash flow (26Q3) $57.9 million
โ‡— accelerating

Free cash flow โ€” operating cash flow minus capital spending โ€” rose 14.3% from a year ago in the third quarter, rebounding from an 11.0% drop in the second quarter. Lower capital spending of $11.9 million versus $14.9 million a year ago helped lift free cash flow to 19.9% of sales by our math.

Specialty Products sales (26Q3) $37.3 million
โ‡˜ decelerating

Specialty Products, which sells performance gases for medical device sterilization and minerals for crops, grew sales 4.5% from a year ago, slowing from 8.9% growth in the second quarter. Segment operating profit rose 6.6% to $12.3 million, or 3.0% to $13.1 million excluding one-offs, as higher overhead partially offset gas sales.

Effective tax rate (26Q3) 22.2%
โ‡˜ decelerating

The company's income tax rate dipped from 22.8% in the second quarter and 22.6% a year ago due to tax return adjustments and foreign-derived income deductions. Through nine months, the tax rate sits at 22.7%, matching the 22.5โ€“23.0% full-year range finance chief Martin Bengtsson gave last quarter.

โ“ Key Questions

Why did inventories jump 35% to $177 million?

Inventories have grown by $45.6 million since December, nearly four times the pace of sales growth. Investors need to know whether Balchem is stockpiling raw materials against supply-chain disruptions or sitting on unsold finished goods.

How much of Animal Nutrition's 12% growth was volume?

Last quarter, price increases from European anti-dumping duties drove about half of the division's growth. Because those price hikes lap in early 2027, only volume growth will carry the segment next year.

How fast did branded nutrients grow versus food ingredients?

The release said both halves of Human Nutrition and Health grew, lifting segment sales 8.1%. Because branded nutrients carry higher margins, their exact growth rate shows whether the product mix is still improving.

Is the Orange County plant still opening in 2027?

Balchem's high-margin microencapsulation line has been running near capacity, and the $36 million replacement facility went unmentioned in the release for a second quarter. Any construction delay would cap growth in 2027.

Has the APOE4 choline cognition study been published?

Last quarter, chief executive Ted Harris hoped to discuss the completed MD Anderson and MIT study on choline and adult memory on the third-quarter call. The release mentions new VitaCholine science at a trade show but does not name the study.
