Avantor (AVTR) Q3 2026 earnings review
Avantor's sales return to growth, but its profit margins shrink
Avantor's sales grew again in both of its divisions, but its profit margins kept shrinking. Sales from businesses owned a year ago rose 5% — more than double what the lab-supply and chemical maker planned for — as bioprocessing chemicals joined lab distribution in positive territory. Chief executive Emmanuel Ligner raised the full-year sales and cash outlooks, though by our math the plan has underlying growth slowing to about 3% in the fourth quarter.
| Sales from businesses owned a year ago | +5.2% planned for ~2.5% growth |
|---|---|
| Profit per share, excluding one-offs | $0.22 unchanged from a year ago |
| VWR segment operating margin | 9.7% 11.2% a year ago |
| Full-year underlying sales outlook | Raised 1 pt middle of the range: 1.0% growth |
⚖️ Verdict: 🟢 Bullish
The story got better because the bioprocessing division finally turned four quarters of rising orders into actual shipments, while strong cash generation cut net debt to 3.1 times annual profit. One caution: the 5% sales rebound did not lift profitability, as unfavourable product mix and higher overhead pushed the distribution margin down to 9.7% and left management holding its full-year margin target unchanged.
The question now is whether higher sales will finally restore profit margins or if Avantor is giving up price to win business. If the recovery is healthy, new volume will absorb factory costs; if it rests on lower-profit products and easy comparisons from 2025, margins will stay flat. Fourth-quarter margins — which by our math must reach 16% to hit the full-year plan — will tell.
🐂 Bull Case
Both Segments Returned to Underlying Sales Growth
"VWR Distribution & Services delivered another quarter of improving revenue performance, with organic growth accelerating to 5.8%, and Bioscience & Medtech Products returned to organic growth as expected," chief executive Emmanuel Ligner said. VWR distributes laboratory equipment and supplies, while Bioscience & Medtech Products makes specialized chemicals and silicone materials for drugmakers and medical-device firms.
- Total sales from businesses owned a year ago: up 5.2%, beating the 2.5% plan
- VWR underlying sales: up 5.8%, rising from 1.7% growth in the second quarter
- Bioscience & Medtech underlying sales: up 3.6%, reversing a 5.6% drop last quarter
Ligner launched a turnaround programme called Revival last year to "sharpen our strategic focus and improve execution" by upgrading the online store and clearing factory bottlenecks. Because four straight quarters of rising chemical orders finally turned into shipments while lab distribution sped up, Avantor raised its full-year underlying sales plan by a full percentage point.
What to watch: fourth-quarter underlying sales growth in both divisions. By our math, the raised full-year outlook points to about 3.2% underlying growth next quarter, which will test whether new customer wins hold up.
Cash Generation Lowered Debt Load Closer to Target
Avantor has prioritized paying down its borrowings over buying back stock since late last year. Management set a goal to bring net debt down to 3.0 times annual profit before interest, taxes, depreciation and one-offs by the end of 2026, after that ratio sat stuck at 3.3 times for two straight quarters.
The company generated $156.2 million in free cash flow during the third quarter and raised the bottom of its full-year cash outlook by $25 million. Because cash piled up on the balance sheet while net debt fell by $173.2 million from June to $3.24 billion, the leverage ratio dropped to 3.1 times.
What to watch: year-end net leverage in the fourth-quarter report. By our math, the full-year outlook leaves $213.3 million of free cash flow for the fourth quarter, which should push debt below the 3.0 times ceiling.
🐻 Bear Case
Higher Sales Did Not Lift Profit Margins
Ligner said the sales recovery shows the progress the lab supplier is making under its Revival programme. Yet higher revenue did not flow through to profitability, because the cost of making and buying products rose by 0.9 percentage points of revenue from a year ago, pushing gross margin down to 31.5%.
- VWR operating margin excluding one-offs: 9.7%, down 1.5 percentage points from a year ago
- Bioscience & Medtech operating margin excluding one-offs: 26.6%, unchanged from a year ago
- Total profit excluding one-offs: $146.4 million, down 3.1% despite 4.6% sales growth
Avantor blamed the VWR margin drop on "unfavorable product mix and higher SG&A expenses" — selling and administrative overhead — even as total company overhead fell by 0.8 percentage points of revenue. Management held its full-year EBITDA margin plan unchanged despite the 2.7-point sales beat, which by our math requires a jump to 16.1% in the fourth quarter.
What to watch: VWR's operating margin in the fourth quarter. Another decline while sales grow would show that Avantor is winning lab distribution contracts by giving up price or selling lower-profit supplies.
Easier Comparisons Drove Part of the Sales Rebound
Ligner said "improving execution and stronger end markets provide a foundation for sustained revenue growth" after underlying sales rose 5.2%. However, the third quarter compared against a 4.7% underlying drop a year ago, when customer price resets in lab distribution and order delays in bioprocessing hit the business hard.
The company's own updated plan points to a slower pace ahead. By our math, the raised full-year outlook implies underlying sales growth will step down to 3.2% in the fourth quarter, because the Bioscience & Medtech division faces a tougher comparison from a year-ago wave of electronic-materials shipments.
What to watch: the 2027 revenue outlook at the December 8 investor day and in the fourth-quarter release. Once the easy comparisons from 2025 roll off, next year's target will show the true growth rate.
Risks this quarter didn't answer
Five standing concerns from prior quarters received no new figures or updates in the third-quarter earnings release.
- Bioscience & Medtech order ratio: book-to-bill (orders received versus shipped) was not in the release; the conference call or quarterly filing will show if it stayed above 1.0.
- VWR goodwill cushion: the unit carried $2.8 billion of goodwill with just 5.5% valuation headroom in March; the annual October 1 impairment test in the upcoming filing will test it.
- Long-term margin targets: management retired its old $400 million cost-savings goal in 2025; the December 8 investor day will show what replaces it.
- Permanent finance chief: Steve Eck has served as interim finance chief for four quarters; a permanent hire remains pending.
- Shareholder lawsuits: Avantor added $1.3 million to legal reserves, while the quarterly filing will update the Delaware securities litigation.

Currency Swings and Option ExercisesLifted Share Count
Foreign currency reduced third-quarter sales by 0.6%, half the 1.25% drag management had planned for, so Avantor raised its full-year currency tailwind assumption to 0.75% at a 1.15 euro-to-dollar rate. Meanwhile, employees exercised $12.7 million of stock options while the buyback programme stayed paused, lifting the full-year diluted share count forecast by two million to 679 million.
💲 Other KPIs
Reported net profit swung from a $711.8 million loss a year ago (when Avantor wrote down $785 million of distribution goodwill) and rose from $38.1 million last quarter. A $105.4 million income tax benefit — driven by $147.2 million in deferred tax adjustments — lifted reported profit $57 million above profit excluding one-offs.
Stockpiles of lab supplies and chemicals rose 4.5% from $818.2 million at the end of 2025, matching the 4.6% rise in third-quarter revenue. Building inventory used $44.1 million of cash in the quarter and $90.8 million over the first nine months, holding back operating cash flow as the firm stocked up for higher shipments.
Costs for staff layoffs and site closures under the Revival overhaul fell to 0.5% of sales in the third quarter, down from $24.0 million in the second quarter and $15.1 million in the first. Year-to-date restructuring charges total $47.2 million, up from $28.0 million in the first nine months of 2025.
🔮 Guidance
Raised. The middle of the range moved up 1.0 percentage point to 1.0% underlying growth for the year. By our math, that leaves about 3.2% underlying growth for the fourth quarter, down from 5.2% in the third quarter. It is the second raise this year after management started at -1.5% in February: +0.0 points, +1.5 points, +1.0 point.
Raised. The middle of the range rose 1.25 percentage points to 1.75% total sales growth, combining the higher underlying sales plan with a 0.75-point foreign currency benefit (up from 0.5 points previously). By our math, the outlook implies fourth-quarter reported sales will grow about 1.9% from a year ago, compared with 4.6% this quarter.
Unchanged. The life-science supplier kept its full-year profit margin target at 15.05% at the middle of the range for a third straight quarter. Because the margin sat at 14.7% over the first nine months and 15.1% in the third quarter, by our math the plan requires the margin to reach 16.1% in the fourth quarter.
Raised. Avantor lifted the bottom of its full-year profit-per-share range by a cent, putting the middle of the plan at $0.82 (down from $0.90 in 2025). By our math, that leaves $0.22 per share for the fourth quarter, matching the third quarter and a year ago. It is a second consecutive trim to the bottom end: +$0.00, +$0.015, +$0.005.
Raised. Management lifted the bottom of the range by $25 million, moving the middle of the target to $537.5 million before cash restructuring payments. With $324.2 million generated in the first nine months, by our math the plan calls for $213.3 million in the fourth quarter, up from $117.2 million in the fourth quarter of 2025.
❓ Key Questions
Why did VWR margins fall when sales grew 5.8%?
VWR underlying sales accelerated by 4.1 percentage points from the second quarter, yet its operating margin dropped half a point to 9.7%. How much of the drop came from discounting to win contracts versus higher overhead?
What drives the fourth-quarter EBITDA margin jump to 16.1%?
Holding the full-year EBITDA margin outlook at 14.8%–15.3% implies a 1.0-point jump in the fourth quarter by our math, even though implied underlying sales growth slows from 5.2% to 3.2%. Which cost lines will fall?
What was the Bioscience & Medtech book-to-bill ratio?
Management highlighted a 1.1 ratio of orders to shipments in the first half to prove bioprocessing demand was recovering, but the third-quarter release omitted the figure. Did order intake stay above 1.0?
How much VWR goodwill headroom remained on October 1?
The VWR distribution unit carried $2.8 billion of goodwill with just 5.5% valuation cushion in March. Given that VWR's operating profit fell 9.5% from a year ago in the third quarter, did the cushion shrink at the annual test?
