Autohome (ATHM) Q3 2026 earnings review
Autohome's core revenue keeps falling, while big payouts drain cash
Autohome, China's leading online car-buying portal, saw advertising and dealer subscriptions shrink while its transaction marketplace rebounded from the second quarter. Total revenue fell 26% from a year ago and profit excluding one-offs dropped 38%, by our math, though heavy share buybacks cushioned the fall in profit per share. Chief executive Chi Liu pointed to steady progress in new retail and used-car exports, and the board declared a RMB 1 billion dividend to meet its full-year payout target.
| Revenue | RMB 1,315M -26.0% from a year ago |
|---|---|
| Profit per ADS, excluding one-offs | RMB 2.42 -29.9% from a year ago |
| Current deferred revenue | RMB 411M -22.5% from a year ago |
| Full-year dividend plan | Held at RMB 1.5B RMB 1.0B declared for the second half |
โ๏ธ Verdict: ๐ด Bearish
The story got worse because forward indicators for the core advertising and dealer businesses turned down again while payouts drained the cash pile. Upfront customer payments on the balance sheet fell 23% from a year ago, a steeper drop than in the second quarter, and automaker advertising resumed falling after a flat prior quarter. The good news: online marketplace sales rose 53% from the second quarter as finance chief Craig Yan Zeng said new retail began contributing to revenue.
The question now is whether expanding new retail and export transactions can offset structural declines in traditional dealer subscriptions before payouts erode the company's interest income. Either the marketplace rebound marks a durable shift toward commission-based car sales, or ongoing dealer closures keep pulling total revenue and cash balances down. Fourth-quarter marketplace revenue and first-quarter dealer contract renewals will settle it.
๐ Bull Case
Online Marketplace Rebounds From Its Second-Quarter Low
Online marketplace and others is Autohome's segment for car transactions, auto financing, used-car auctions and newer retail services. Finance chief Craig Yan Zeng said "our new retail business is capitalizing on the growing network effect and has begun contributing to revenue, directly complementing our traditional core business."
In the third quarter, chief executive Chi Liu said the new retail business "refined its model and scaled up its service network, further broadening its city coverage." Liu added that the cross-border used-car export platform grew in "both the supply of quality vehicles and volume of export transactions."
Those steps lifted segment revenue 53.2% from the second quarter to RMB 547.3 million, by our math, ending three straight quarters of sequential declines. Revenue still fell 33.0% from a year ago because the third quarter of 2025 was the peak for direct vehicle sales, so the sequential rebound shows the newer dealer-partnered model is gaining traction.
What to watch: fourth-quarter online marketplace revenue against last year's much lower base of RMB 460.3 million. Growth from a year ago would confirm that the new retail and export platforms can expand total transactions without relying on low-margin direct car sales.
Lower Direct Vehicle Costs Lifted Gross Margin
Gross margin measures the share of revenue left after the direct cost of delivering services and selling cars. When Autohome scaled up its direct vehicle sales last year, those lower-margin transactions pushed gross margin down to a trough of 63.7% in the third quarter of 2025, by our math.
This quarter, cost of revenues โ the direct cost of content, bandwidth and vehicle transactions โ dropped to 32.8% of revenue from 36.3% a year ago, lifting gross margin by 3.5 percentage points to 67.2%, by our math. That gain did not reach operating margin, which slipped 1.0 percentage point to 7.3% because sales and marketing expenses rose 8.9 percentage points of revenue as total sales shrank.
What to watch: fourth-quarter gross margin against last year's 78.2% reading, when the shift away from direct car sales had already begun. Holding near the mid-70s would show that the third-quarter dip from the second quarter's 77.1% was seasonal rather than a return to low-margin transactions.
๐ป Bear Case
Dealer Subscriptions and Upfront Billings Keep Shrinking
Leads generation services, where car dealers pay subscription fees to list inventory and receive buyer inquiries, is Autohome's largest core profit source. While Liu highlighted platform traffic gains and Zeng said the company is "maintaining a streamlined cost structure", dealer demand and upfront customer payments both deteriorated.
Autohome said leads revenue fell because of "reduced spending from dealers amid declining sales volumes, along with a decrease in the number of paying dealers." Current deferred revenue โ cash collected upfront from dealers and automakers for contracts not yet delivered โ also dropped faster than in the second quarter.
- Leads generation revenue: RMB 526.2 million, down 20.7% from a year ago by our math
- Current deferred revenue: RMB 410.7 million, down 22.5% from a year ago vs down 15.1% in the second quarter by our math
- Quarterly change in deferred revenue: down RMB 287.9 million from the second quarter as annual contracts amortised, by our math
The steeper drop in deferred revenue cuts against hopes that dealer billings were stabilising after the first half. Because Autohome recognises these upfront payments over the rest of the contract term, a 22.5% smaller balance points to continued double-digit declines in core subscription revenue.
What to watch: current deferred revenue at the end of the first quarter of 2027, when annual dealer contract renewals take place. Another year-over-year drop would show that showroom closures in China are permanently shrinking Autohome's customer base.
Shareholder Payouts Exceed Profits and Drain Cash
Autohome is returning large sums of cash to shareholders through dividends and share buybacks. Supporters view these payouts as a major positive because retiring shares reduces the share count, which cushioned the drop in profit per share, excluding one-offs, to 30.2% from a year ago against a 37.9% drop in net profit, by our math.
In the third quarter, the board approved a second-half cash dividend of about RMB 1.0 billion, bringing total 2026 declared dividends to RMB 1.5 billion. By October 30, the company had also spent US$155.4 million to buy back 7.06 million American depositary shares (ADSs, its US-traded shares) under its US$400 million programme.
- Diluted share count: 418.4 million ordinary shares, down 11.2% from a year ago by our math
- Nine-month profit, excluding one-offs: RMB 709.2 million by our math, less than half the RMB 1.5 billion annual dividend alone
- Cash and investments: RMB 17.65 billion, down RMB 3.72 billion from RMB 21.36 billion at the end of 2025 by our math
Because dividends and buybacks run at several times annual earnings, Autohome is funding them out of its savings rather than current operations. As the cash pile shrinks, the interest income it generates is falling too, removing a key buffer that has been propping up net profit.
What to watch: whether management renews the RMB 1.5 billion annual dividend commitment beyond 2026 in the fourth-quarter report. Extending the pledge without an earnings recovery would continue draining the balance sheet and further reduce interest income.
China Auto Slump Pulls Advertising Down Again
Media services is Autohome's online advertising business for carmakers. After holding roughly flat at 0.4% growth from a year ago in the second quarter, media revenue fell 19.0% from a year ago to RMB 241.4 million in the third quarter, by our math.
Autohome said the drop resulted from "reduced advertising spending from automakers amid declining sales volumes" in China's car market. Because carmakers cut promotional budgets when showroom traffic slows, the second quarter's stability proved temporary rather than the start of an advertising recovery.
What to watch: fourth-quarter media services revenue during China's peak year-end auto sales season. Another double-digit drop from a year ago would show that carmakers are shifting year-end marketing budgets away from vertical auto portals.
Risks this quarter didn't answer
Three standing concerns received no numerical updates in the third-quarter earnings release.
- New retail store counts and unit economics: management gave no transaction volumes, take rates, or store counts for Autohome Good Car or the online car-purchase pilot; any disclosed revenue breakdown on the call would test whether the model is profitable.
- Paying dealer count: the company again blamed leads declines on fewer paying dealers without publishing the number of active dealers; disclosing the renewal rate in the annual report would show how fast the customer base is shrinking.
- Controlling shareholder governance and preferred shares: convertible redeemable noncontrolling interests โ preferred shares in a subsidiary that rank ahead of ordinary shareholders โ rose to RMB 2.27 billion after RMB 47.6 million of quarterly accretion, with no update on strategy under controlling shareholder Haier.

Autohome Launches Cheese Car Butler AI Agent
In early September, Autohome officially launched Cheese Car Butler, its standalone artificial intelligence assistant for car buyers, after a July public test. Liu said the tool moves the platform "toward trusted decision-making and reliable fulfillment", while average mobile daily active users rose more than 3% from a year ago in September, according to research firm QuestMobile, though the release gave no figures on AI user adoption or revenue.
๐ฒ Other KPIs
Cash generated from operations rose to RMB 359.8 million, up from RMB 261.2 million in the second quarter and RMB 66.6 million a year ago, after the company burned RMB 143.0 million in the first quarter. Working capital collections helped cash generation exceed net income despite lower operating profit.
Income earned on the company's cash and financial products fell 41.7% from a year ago and 29.0% from the second quarter, by our math, declining for a fourth straight quarter. As buybacks and dividends shrink the cash balance, this income stream โ which still roughly equals operating profit of RMB 95.7 million โ provides less support to net earnings.
Total headcount fell 11.1% from 4,259 a year ago by our math, and dipped from 3,839 in the second quarter, including 1,116 staff at used-car subsidiary TTP Car. Smaller staff numbers following first-quarter layoffs helped cut product development expenses by 30.1% from a year ago to RMB 194.8 million.
๐ฎ Guidance
Unchanged. The board approved a second-half cash dividend of US$1.58 per ADS, or about RMB 1.0 billion, payable in March 2027. Combined with the RMB 0.5 billion first-half dividend declared in May, full-year payouts reach the RMB 1.5 billion annual commitment set for 2025 and 2026.
Unchanged. The 12-month buyback plan authorised on July 28 remains up to US$400 million. As of October 30, the Chinese auto portal had spent US$155.4 million to repurchase 7.06 million ADSs, up from US$43.6 million as of mid-August, leaving about US$244.6 million under the plan by our math.
โ Key Questions
What are the unit economics of the new retail business?
Online marketplace revenue jumped 53.2% from the second quarter as new retail contributed to sales, but gross margin fell 9.9 percentage points sequentially. Investors need to know the transaction volume, commission rate, and gross margin of these new retail services.
How many paying dealers remain on the platform?
Management again blamed the 20.7% drop in leads generation revenue on a smaller number of paying dealers, while upfront deferred revenue fell 22.5% from a year ago. Without the active dealer count or renewal rate, investors cannot tell if dealer losses are accelerating.
Will the RMB 1.5 billion dividend continue after 2026?
Dividends and buybacks have drained RMB 3.72 billion from cash and investments over the past nine months, cutting net interest income by 41.7% from a year ago. Management has not said whether payouts will adjust to match lower earnings after the current three-year pledge.
How will Cheese Car Butler generate revenue?
Autohome officially launched its Cheese Car Butler artificial intelligence agent in September, and mobile daily users rose over 3% from a year ago. Management has not disclosed how many users tried the tool or whether it charges dealers, automakers, or consumers.
