Arcturus Therapeutics (ARCT) Q3 2026 earnings review
Arcturus cuts research costs, but its liver drug resets
Arcturus Therapeutics, a developer of messenger RNA medicines for rare lung and liver diseases, narrowed its quarterly loss through a one-time partner breakup payment while resetting its liver drug timeline. Reported revenue rose 7% to $18 million because the company booked a $12 million cash settlement and remaining upfront fees from former vaccine partner CSL Seqirus, but by our math underlying revenue shrank 94%. Chief executive Joseph Payne introduced a more potent delivery technology called LUNAR 2.0 and pivoted the Phase 2 liver trial to a new drug candidate, ARCT-2601, with dosing set for early 2027.
| Revenue excluding CSL termination items | $1.1M -94% from a year ago by our math |
|---|---|
| Reported revenue | $18.3M +7% from a year ago on $17.2M one-off settlement |
| Unrestricted cash | $184.8M $18.7M underlying quarterly burn by our math |
| Cash runway outlook | Unchanged funded through year-end 2028 |
⚖️ Verdict: 🔴 Bearish
The story got worse because both lead rare-disease programs face longer paths to final testing. Switching the liver program to ARCT-2601 pushes initial human results to the second half of 2027 instead of advancing ARCT-810 into a final-stage pediatric study, and the Phase 3 decision for the cystic fibrosis drug ARCT-032 now reads any time before its second-quarter 2027 data presentation rather than fourth-quarter 2026. On the positive side, new clinic sites in Israel and Turkey sped up cystic fibrosis patient recruiting for completion by year-end, and a 27% cut in research spending kept cash use aligned with the company's plan.
The question now is whether the $185 million cash reserve can truly fund the business through the end of 2028 once new trials begin. Either partner Thermo Fisher covers most of the Phase 3 cystic fibrosis bills and keeps quarterly cash use below $21 million by our math, or trial costs and the newly expanded pipeline force Arcturus to raise money earlier. The Phase 3 decision and its funding breakdown before second-quarter 2027 will tell.
🐂 Bull Case
Lower Research Spending Keeps Cash Runway Intact
Arcturus develops messenger RNA (mRNA) medicines, which instruct human cells to make missing proteins. Because it has no steady commercial sales, its survival depends on managing cash. Finance chief Dennis Mulroy said the group holds a "cash runway of over two years through year end 2028, allowing our company to reach important clinical and regulatory milestones for its rare disease pipeline".
The biotechnology developer cut research and development spending, its cost of running laboratory and clinical trials, by 26.9% from a year ago to $17.0 million. That reduction lowered research costs by 42.8 percentage points of revenue and narrowed the quarterly operating loss from $16.5 million to $9.2 million. By our math, underlying cash use was $18.7 million before a $12.0 million partner settlement, leaving $184.8 million in the bank.
What to watch: quarterly cash use in the first half of 2027, when dosing starts for the new liver drug. Holding cash use below $20.5 million a quarter by our math will keep the 2028 target intact without selling new shares.
New Overseas Sites Speed Up Cystic Fibrosis Trial
ARCT-032 is the company's inhaled mRNA treatment for cystic fibrosis, a genetic lung disease. Slow patient recruiting had been a standing worry over the past year. This quarter, Arcturus said recruiting in Cohort 4, which tests a 10-milligram daily dose over 12 weeks in up to 20 adults, sped up "due to increased site activations in Israel and Turkey and is expected to be completed by year-end".
Finishing recruitment by December removes a bottleneck and lets the drugmaker present full Phase 2 results in the second quarter of 2027. One print fades the recruiting concern rather than ending it, because the company still has to complete dosing across all patients.
What to watch: confirmation in the fourth-quarter report that all 20 patients have entered the trial. A completed roster will lock in the second-quarter 2027 readout schedule.
🐻 Bear Case
Liver Program Resets to a New Drug Candidate
"The third quarter marked a pivotal step forward for our liver therapeutics franchise, with encouraging ARCT-810 Phase 2 results and the introduction of LUNAR 2.0™, our next-generation mRNA delivery platform, which demonstrated a 38-fold improvement over the key lipid in ARCT-810 in non-human primates," chief executive Joseph Payne said. ARCT-810 is a treatment for ornithine transcarbamylase (OTC) deficiency, a rare condition where the liver cannot clear toxic ammonia.
Despite calling the ARCT-810 results encouraging, Payne did not advance the drug into a final-stage pediatric trial as planned earlier this year. Following a June meeting with US regulators, Arcturus will instead "incorporate ARCT-2601 into the ongoing ARCT-810 Phase 2 study". ARCT-2601 is a new drug candidate that uses the LUNAR 2.0 delivery fat bubble to offer "potential for lower and/or less frequent dosing of ARCT-2601 compared to ARCT-810".
Switching candidates mid-stream means ARCT-810 was not potent enough at safe doses to move straight into final testing. The pivot pushes human dosing to the first quarter of 2027 and initial proof-of-concept results to the second half of 2027, adding at least a year to the liver program.
What to watch: initial human results for ARCT-2601 in the second half of 2027. Clear drops in patient ammonia at lower doses would validate the delay.
Cystic Fibrosis Phase 3 Decision Timeline Blurs
Moving ARCT-032 into a large Phase 3 trial is the main catalyst for Arcturus because partner Thermo Fisher Scientific has agreed to help support late-stage development. Three months ago, the San Diego group told investors to expect the Phase 3 decision in the fourth quarter of 2026.
In this release, Arcturus dropped the fourth-quarter date. It stated instead that a "decision to proceed into Phase 3 triggers significant contributions from Thermo. The timing of the decision is expected to occur before the planned Phase 2 data presentation" in the second quarter of 2027. That wording gives management until spring 2027 to decide and continues a pattern of timeline slips.
What to watch: whether Arcturus announces the Phase 3 decision before December 31, 2026. Silence past year-end will confirm another clinical delay.
One-Time Settlement Empties the Revenue Backlog
Reported revenue rose 6.7% from a year ago to $18.3 million, which cut the net loss nearly in half to $7.4 million. The company said the increase came from the "recognition of the $12.0 million termination payment and the remaining deferred revenue upon termination of the CSL Seqirus collaboration". CSL Seqirus is the former vaccine partner that handed back rights to the Kostaive COVID-19 shot in August.
- Collaboration revenue: $16.9 million, up 19.1% from a year ago on the one-off settlement
- Underlying revenue excluding CSL termination items: about $1.1 million, down 93.6% from a year ago by our math
- Grant revenue: $1.4 million, down 51.8% from a year ago on lower government flu funding
- Deferred revenue on the balance sheet: $0.4 million, down 96.2% from a year ago
Because the breakup emptied the deferred revenue backlog—cash collected upfront from partners for future work—Arcturus has almost no contract revenue left to book. Without new deals, quarterly sales will drop back near the $1.4 million grant level.
What to watch: fourth-quarter collaboration revenue. A reading near zero will show that Japanese COVID-19 vaccine sales are not replacing the lost CSL payments.
Risks This Quarter Didn't Answer
Four standing concerns about trial design, partner costs, and vaccine economics received no new numbers in the third-quarter release.
- Cystic fibrosis efficacy bar: Cohort 4 has no placebo group, and Arcturus has not stated what lung-function improvement triggers Phase 3; the Q2 2027 data presentation is the next test.
- Inhaled mRNA tolerability: competitor dropouts raised safety questions across 12-week dosing that only the full Cohort 4 safety readout in Q2 2027 will settle.
- Phase 3 net cash cost: the release did not clarify how much Arcturus must pay research contractor PPD versus Thermo Fisher's manufacturing support; the 10-Q filing or Phase 3 announcement will test this.
- Kostaive vaccine economics: commercial sales are underway in Japan with partner Meiji Seika Pharma and European licenses were transferred to Arcturus, but management gave no revenue figures or 2027 launch costs.

Early Pipeline Expands Into Three New Diseases
After narrowing its work last year to cystic fibrosis and OTC deficiency, Arcturus widened its early pipeline again. The company bought myNEO, "integrating AI-driven capabilities in antigen design, mRNA optimization, and target identification" for cancer, and added LUNAR 2.0 programs for gout and phenylketonuria (PKU), an inherited metabolic disorder. It plans to apply for US human testing in PKU in the second half of 2027.
💲 Other KPIs
Overhead spending—management pay, legal bills, and office costs—rose 0.8% from a year ago, compared with a 6.3% rise last quarter. For the first nine months of 2026, overhead fell 3.5% to $30.9 million, keeping full-year spending in line with the company's plan for a slight decrease as smaller staff costs offset higher legal fees.
Interest earned on cash reserves dropped 45.2% from a year ago and 2.5% from last quarter. As Arcturus spends its cash balance on clinical trials, smaller bank deposits generate less interest income to cushion operating losses.
The share count rose 4.6% from a year ago due to stock sold in late 2025, but was unchanged from last quarter. Management has avoided issuing new shares in 2026 while funding trials from existing cash and the CSL settlement.
🔮 Guidance
Unchanged. The plan still has $184.8 million in unrestricted cash lasting over two years, through the end of 2028. By our math, that leaves a maximum average cash burn of $20.5 million a quarter over the next nine quarters, compared with $18.7 million of underlying burn this quarter. Holding that pace depends on partner Thermo Fisher absorbing a large share of upcoming Phase 3 cystic fibrosis costs.
❓ Key Questions
Why replace ARCT-810 with ARCT-2601 in Phase 2 now?
Management called ARCT-810 Phase 2 biomarker data encouraging, yet opted to test a new LUNAR 2.0 candidate in the trial instead of starting a pivotal study. Investors need to know whether the FDA asked for greater potency or wider safety margins.
What did the myNEO buyout cost in cash or stock?
Arcturus announced the completion of the myNEO acquisition to add artificial intelligence tools for cancer, but the release disclosed no purchase price or ongoing operating expense for the unit.
How much Phase 3 cash must Arcturus pay contractor PPD?
The company says a Phase 3 decision triggers significant support from Thermo Fisher, but prior filings showed up to $40 million in clinical contractor commitments. Management has not stated the net cash outflow built into the 2028 runway.
What are the profit-share terms on Japanese Kostaive sales?
Partner Meiji Seika Pharma is selling Kostaive for the 2026/2027 season in Japan, and Arcturus took over the European licenses, yet the release provided no revenue figures or commercial cost estimates.
