Aquestive Therapeutics (AQST) Q3 2026 earnings review

Aquestive gets March allergy drug date, but factory sales drop

Aquestive Therapeutics, a maker of dissolve-in-the-mouth drug films, cleared a key hurdle for its allergy treatment while its partner factory orders fell. Chief executive Daniel Barber resubmitted the US application for Anaphylm and received a March 16, 2027 decision date, and licensed out its epilepsy film Libervant for $10 million upfront. Meanwhile, third-quarter revenue dropped 41% as partner shipments of the addiction treatment Suboxone fell to a three-year low.

โš–๏ธ Verdict: โšช Neutral

The story is unchanged because on-time regulatory progress for Anaphylm balances the drop in partner manufacturing. Winning a March 2027 review date keeps the company on schedule to unlock $95 million in launch financing before its June 2027 deadline, and the Libervant deal resolves a long-running search for a US partner. On the other side, the 41% drop in doses shipped shows that management's full-year revenue outlook was not sandbagged, but instead reflected a real second-half drop in Suboxone orders.

The question now is whether the FDA approves Anaphylm on March 16, 2027 without further delays, and whether Suboxone orders bounce back in the fourth quarter. By our math, the unchanged full-year outlook points to $12 million of fourth-quarter revenue, which requires factory shipments to recover from the third-quarter trough. Fourth-quarter shipment volumes and the March FDA decision will settle both debates.

FDA Sets March 2027 Decision Date for Anaphylm

Anaphylm, an under-the-tongue film that delivers epinephrine for severe allergic reactions without a needle, is Aquestive's main growth project. In January, US regulators rejected the initial application and asked for new packaging and drug-absorption studies. Chief executive Daniel Barber completed those studies, resubmitted the application on September 16, and got a Class 2 six-month review.

  • US FDA decision goal date: March 16, 2027
  • Health Canada application: planned for the fourth quarter of 2026
  • European Union application: planned for the first quarter of 2027
  • AQST-108 skin gel for eczema: additional clinical trials starting in early 2027

"With a PDUFA goal date of March 16, 2027, we believe we have a clear path to making Anaphylm available to patients and caregivers, if approved," Barber said. The date matters because the drugmaker must win approval by June 30, 2027 to unlock $95 million in pre-arranged launch financing from RTW Investments and Oaktree Capital. Meanwhile, the team is hiring sales reps "to engage allergists following approval".

What to watch: the FDA decision by March 16, 2027. Approval on time unlocks the $95 million funding package and lets commercial sales begin in the second quarter of 2027.

Libervant Licensing Brings $10 Million Upfront

Libervant is Aquestive's oral film for treating seizure clusters in epilepsy patients. For several quarters, the firm sought a partner to sell the drug in the United States rather than build a neurology sales force of its own. In October, the New Jersey company licensed exclusive US commercial rights to Eton Pharmaceuticals.

Eton paid $10 million upfront, which adds to the $90.3 million in cash on hand at the end of September. Aquestive can also earn up to $47.5 million in regulatory and sales milestones, plus royalties in the mid-teens on net sales, and will manufacture the film for 20 years. Suboxone Order Drop Explains the Cautious Outlook

Aquestive funds its drug development by manufacturing oral films for partners, mainly the opioid-addiction treatment Suboxone for Indivior. Last quarter, strong first-half shipments made the unchanged full-year revenue outlook look cautious. This quarter answered why management held the target down: partner orders dropped.

  • Doses shipped: 25.8 million, down 41.0% from a year ago and 46.1% from last quarter
  • Manufacture and supply revenue: $6.7 million, down 41.7% from a year ago
  • License and royalty revenue: $0.8 million, down 20.0% from a year ago

The company said the 41.0% revenue drop was "primarily driven by the quarterly fluctuation of Suboxone product orders", partially offset by higher shipments of Ondif, an anti-nausea film sold in Brazil. Even if part of the drop is order timing, 25.8 million doses is the lowest quarterly shipment volume in the three-year chart history and highlights the risk of relying on an aging partner product.

What to watch: fourth-quarter doses shipped and manufacture revenue against the $12.2 million total revenue implied by the full-year outlook. A second weak quarter would show that Indivior demand is shrinking beyond normal order timing.

๐Ÿ”ด new MARGIN

Lower Factory Volume Cut Gross Margin by 13 Points

Because Aquestive runs its own factory in Indiana, its profitability on partner products depends on keeping shipment volumes high. When third-quarter revenue fell 41.0% to $7.6 million, factory costs did not fall at the same pace. Manufacture and supply expenses, the cost of making the films, rose by 12.5 percentage points of revenue to 47.7%, pushing gross margin down from 65% to 52%.

The drugmaker cut overhead to soften the blow. Selling, general and administrative expenses fell $1.1 million to $14.2 million on lower legal and commercial spending, but still jumped by 68.4 percentage points of revenue to 187.5%. Research and development expenses dipped to $4.3 million, or 56.3% of revenue, up 20.9 points. As a result, operating loss widened from $11.5 million to $14.5 million.

What to watch: gross margin on total revenue in the fourth quarter. A rebound above 60% will show whether factory margins recover when partner orders return toward normal levels.

Risks this quarter didn't answer

Five standing concerns around Anaphylm's commercial prospects, balance-sheet obligations and legal exposure received no new numbers in the third-quarter earnings release.

  • Insurance coverage and pricing: no list price or payer contracting updates; commercial rollout after March 2027 will test whether insurers cover the film.
  • Debt and royalty claims on Anaphylm: Oaktree's loan and RTW's revenue-share tier up to 7.5% of US sales remain in place, with $95 million in launch funding tied to approval before June 30, 2027.
  • Rival needle-free products: Aquestive shared a 53-person preference survey against an empty nasal spray device, but actual prescription shares after launch will test demand.
  • Foreign partner revenue: the release noted higher Ondif sales in Brazil, but the quarterly filing's geographic table is needed to see exact international revenue.
  • Shareholder lawsuits: legal fees fell $1.5 million from a year ago, and the quarterly filing's legal footnote will show the status of the March and April 2026 suits.

US Factory Base Shields Supply Chain From Tariffs

Pharmaceutical firms face ongoing uncertainty over US trade policy and import duties. Because Aquestive manufactures its oral films in Indiana and holds its intellectual property in the United States, the company confirmed that its supply chain "remains largely unaffected by government tariffs currently in effect". Management continues to monitor proposed trade restrictions.

Cash and cash equivalents (26Q3) $90.3 million
โ‡˜ decelerating

Cash on hand fell by $8.1 million from $98.5 million in the second quarter, a smaller drop than the $12.2 million decline in the prior period. This September balance does not yet include the $10 million upfront payment from Eton Pharmaceuticals, which arrived in October.

Weighted average diluted shares (26Q3) 125.5 million
โ‡— accelerating

Diluted share count rose 13.5% from 110.6 million a year ago, following last August's stock offering and earlier at-the-market share sales. The higher share count spread the $16.5 million net loss across more shares, so loss per share narrowed from $0.14 to $0.13 even though total net loss increased.

Trade and other receivables (26Q3) $5.3 million
โ‡˜ decelerating

Uncollected customer bills dropped 43.7% from $9.3 million in the second quarter and 70.4% from $17.8 million at year-end 2025. The drop tracked the 45.3% quarterly fall in revenue and helped limit cash burn during the quarter.

Deferred revenue (26Q3) $19.7 million
โ‡˜ decelerating

Total deferred revenue โ€” upfront payments from licensing partners that Aquestive recognises as revenue over time โ€” fell by $0.27 million from the second quarter, or 5.3% from a year ago by our math. It has declined by roughly $0.27 million for five straight quarters as old contracts amortise.

Unchanged. The plan still calls for $48 million at the middle of the range, or 7.8% growth from 2025 by our math. With $35.8 million booked in the first nine months, the middle of the range leaves $12.2 million for the fourth quarter, a 6.4% decline from a year ago by our math, but a rebound from the third quarter's $7.6 million.

FY26 Adjusted EBITDA loss, excluding one-offs $30โ€“35 million loss

โ‡˜ decelerating

Unchanged. The firm still expects an operating cash loss of $32.5 million at the middle of the range, narrower than the $49.7 million loss in 2025 by our math. Because the loss for the first nine months was $19.2 million, the middle of the range leaves a $13.3 million loss for the fourth quarter by our math, slightly wider than the third quarter's $12.2 million loss as pre-launch spending continues.

โ“ Key Questions

Will Eton's $10 million payment count toward 2026 revenue?

Aquestive received $10 million upfront from Eton in October for Libervant, yet kept its 2026 revenue outlook unchanged at $46โ€“50 million. Management did not say whether it will book that cash as fourth-quarter revenue or defer it over the 20-year supply contract.

Why did Suboxone orders drop to a three-year low?

Shipments fell 41% to 25.8 million doses, which the release blamed on quarterly order fluctuations. Investors need to know whether Indivior is working down inventory after its merger or if end-market demand for Suboxone film is shrinking faster.

What are the renewal terms on the Indivior supply contract?

Suboxone manufacturing provides the bulk of Aquestive's current revenue, and the initial contract term ran to August 2026. The release gave no update on whether the agreement rolled over on the same pricing and volume terms.

How much did Ondif sales recover in Brazil?

Management said higher revenue from its anti-nausea film Ondif partially offset the Suboxone decline, after Ondif sales dropped in the first half of the year. Without the quarterly filing's geographic table, the size of the rebound is not yet readable.
