Amarin (AMRN) Q3 2026 earnings review

Amarin turns a small profit, but its drug sales shrink

Amarin's deep cost cuts delivered its first quarterly profit in over two years even as generic rivals pushed sales lower. Total revenue dropped 20% from a year ago to $40 million because U.S. prices fell, while cash rose to $323 million. Finance chief Peter Fishman credited the $70 million restructuring plan, though by our math interest income on the cash pile covered a small operating loss.

At a glance
Total net revenue$39.6M -20% from a year ago
Net income$0.2M -$7.7M loss a year ago
Cash and investments$323.4M +$8.8M from last quarter
Year-end cash outlook~$330M implies +$6.6M in Q4

โš–๏ธ Verdict: โšช Neutral

The story is unchanged because lower expenses are offsetting falling U.S. sales without yet proving that foreign partners can grow the top line. European patient demand rose 68%, and the year-end outlook has cash reaching about $330 million. One caution: actual product shipments to Europe dropped from last quarter, and U.S. revenue slipped another 11% from the second quarter.

The question now is whether surging European prescription demand will turn into steady supply orders and royalties before U.S. generic pressure erodes the cash flow. Either European partner Recordati finishes clearing its launch inventory and orders more, or low transfer prices keep foreign revenue small while 2027 U.S. insurance contracts come up for renewal. The third-quarter filing's royalty breakdown and fourth-quarter U.S. contract updates will tell.

๐Ÿ‚ Bull Case

๐ŸŸข strengthening MARGIN

Cost Cuts and Interest Income Produced a Small Profit

Amarin makes Vascepa, a prescription fish-oil capsule that lowers heart-attack risk. In June 2025 it handed European sales to Italian drugmaker Recordati and laid off its own European sales force. Finance chief Peter Fishman said the third quarter showed the result: "We reported our first profitable quarter in over two years, reflecting our lower expense base and the absence of charges following the completion of our previously announced $70 million cost savings initiatives."

Selling and overhead costs fell 27% from a year ago to $14.3 million, or 36.2% of revenue, down 3.4 percentage points by our math. Restructuring charges dropped from $9.4 million to zero. Even so, the core drug business still lost $2.4 million on the operating line; $2.4 million of interest earned on the company's cash pile tipped net income to a $0.2 million profit.

What to watch: fourth-quarter operating income before interest. If promised fourth-quarter cost cuts close the remaining $2.4 million operating gap, the drug business will stand on its own without relying on interest rates.

๐ŸŸข strengthening CASH

Cash Reached $323 Million on Fourth Positive Quarter

Amarin's main financial goal since its 2025 restructuring has been to stop burning cash and grow its balance sheet without borrowing. The Dublin-based drugmaker generated $9.2 million of cash from operations in the third quarter, its fourth positive quarter in a row and a step up from $6.6 million in the second quarter. Total cash and short-term investments rose by $8.8 million to $323.4 million, with zero debt.

Working capital still did much of the work. The company shrank its inventory by another $5.2 million in the quarter to $158.9 million, and by our math it delayed payments to suppliers as accounts payable rose $21.6 million while customer receivables climbed $18.7 million. Because inventory cannot shrink forever, future cash build will need higher operating profit.

What to watch: year-end cash and inventory on the fourth-quarter balance sheet. Reaching the $330 million cash target while inventory levels off would show that cash generation no longer depends on liquidating stock.

๐ŸŸข strengthening GROWTH

European Partner Demand Grew 68% and Added Poland

Outside the United States, Amarin relies on local partners to sell its heart drug, marketed in Europe as Vazkepa. Under a licensing deal Covering 59 countries with patent protection to 2039, Recordati handles European marketing and reimbursement. Patient demand in Europe rose an estimated 68% from a year ago in the third quarter, led by Spain, the UK and Italy, while demand across all global partners grew 55%.

In October, Recordati launched Vazkepa in Poland for patients who pay out of pocket, adding a twelfth European country beyond the 11 active at the end of September. Chief executive Aaron Berg said partner demand beat the growth rates Amarin achieved when it sold the drug itself. What to watch: the count of reimbursed European countries in the full-year report, because state insurance coverage drives much larger patient volumes than private pay.

๐Ÿป Bear Case

๐Ÿ”ด๐Ÿ”ด persistent GROWTH contradicts narrative

Partner Demand Growth Did Not Lift European Supply Sales

Amarin highlights 68% European patient demand growth as proof that its partnered strategy is working. Yet the revenue the company actually books from Europe moved the other way. Fishman noted the disconnect: "The timing and level of product revenue will continue to reflect factors outside our direct control, including partner inventory levels, ordering patterns, as well as market access and pricing."

  • European product revenue: $3.7 million, down 9% from a year ago and down 31% from $5.4 million in the second quarter by our math
  • Total licensing and royalty revenue: $2.7 million, up 139% from a year ago but down 15% from $3.1 million in the second quarter
  • Total net revenue: $39.6 million, down 20% from a year ago and down 6% from the second quarter

This matters because two straight quarters of rising European shipments just reversed, showing that Recordati is still working through launch stock bought a year ago. Until the partner orders on a steady schedule and Amarin reports the Recordati royalty line in the quarterly filing, investors cannot tell how fast patient demand turns into cash for Amarin.

What to watch: the Recordati royalty figure in Note 8 of the third-quarter 10-Q filing. A sequential drop from the $1.4 million booked in the second quarter would mean partner net sales in dollars are growing much slower than unit demand.

๐Ÿ”ด๐Ÿ”ด persistent COMPETITION

Generic Rivals Pushed US Sales Down 30%

The United States still provides 72% of Amarin's revenue, and generic copies of Vascepa have been on the market for five years. Management defends its turf by signing exclusive contracts with pharmacy benefit managers (PBMs, the middlemen that decide which drugs insurance plans cover), keeping a 47% share of the U.S. icosapent ethyl (IPE) prescription market in the third quarter.

Holding that share requires steep price discounts. U.S. product revenue fell 30% from a year ago to $28.5 million "due largely to lower net pricing associated with changes in customer mix, driven largely by continued generic competition". Even against the second quarter, when this year's price cuts were already in place, U.S. sales fell 11% from $32.2 million. Lower U.S. prices and a shift toward lower-margin partner shipments pushed cost of goods sold up 3.8 percentage points of revenue by our math, cutting product gross margin by 6.8 points to 36.7%.

What to watch: fourth-quarter U.S. product revenue against the $28.5 million third-quarter level. Because management says U.S. prescription volumes will stay stable, another sequential revenue drop would mean net prices are still falling inside the year.

๐Ÿ”ด persistent DISCLOSURE

Risks this quarter didn't answer

Three major overhangs on the U.S. business and the cash pile received no update in the third-quarter release, while Berg repeated only that "guided by a clear mandate to maximize shareholder value, we continue to work closely with Barclays, our exclusive financial advisor".

  • 2027 U.S. payer contracts: exclusivity agreements with key pharmacy benefit managers run through the end of 2026, and the fourth-quarter outlook will give the first read on 2027 renewals.
  • Unused $50 million buyback plan: approved in 2024 with zero shares bought across ten quarters; the 10-Q liquidity note will show whether any purchases began.
  • Generic antitrust lawsuits: four generic drugmakers are suing Amarin for damages; the 10-Q legal footnote will show any change to the reserve after zero litigation charges in the third quarter.

Independent Cancer Trial Suggests a New Use for Vascepa

On October 25, researchers from the University of Leeds presented results from a Phase 3 study called EMT2 at a European oncology congress. The independent trial tested Vascepa at its standard heart dose for "improving outcomes for patients undergoing liver resection and standard of care treatment for colorectal cancer liver metastases". Berg said European patents running to 2039 give Amarin time to evaluate whether the data can become a commercial opportunity.

๐Ÿ’ฒ Other KPIs

Inventory (26Q3) $158.9 million
โ‡˜ decelerating

Inventory fell by $5.2 million from the second quarter and is down 18.9% from $195.9 million at the end of 2025 by our math. Amarin has been turning excess drug stock into cash all year, and better purchasing terms for active ingredients helped cut cost of goods sold by 15% from a year ago.

Rest of World product revenue (26Q3) $4.7 million
โ‡— accelerating

Sales to partners outside the U.S. and Europe rose 29% from a year ago and more than tripled from $1.4 million in the second quarter. Because international partners order in batches, this line swings widely from quarter to quarter, offsetting the dip in European supply shipments this period.

Diluted ordinary shares (26Q3) 427.9 million
โ‡— accelerating

The diluted share count rose 3.0% from 415.5 million a year ago by our math, mainly because turning a small net profit required including employee stock options that were left out during loss-making quarters. Stock-based compensation expense fell 42% from a year ago to $1.4 million.

๐Ÿ”ฎ Guidance

FY26 Cash and short-term investments ~$330 million
๐Ÿ † unchanged from ~10% growth (~$333 million)
โ‡˜ decelerating

Consistent with the prior target. Putting a dollar figure of about $330 million on year-end cash translates to 9.1% growth for the year by our math, essentially matching the earlier goal of roughly 10% growth. With cash already at $323.4 million, the plan leaves about $6.6 million of net cash build for the fourth quarter, down from $8.8 million in the third quarter.

Q4 Operating cash flow Positive
๐Ÿ † unchanged from Positive for FY26
โ‡’ stable

Unchanged. Management expects a fifth straight quarter of positive operating cash flow in the fourth quarter, after generating $22.2 million across the first nine months of 2026.

Q4 Operating expense reduction (excluding restructuring) Further reductions in Q4
๐Ÿ † unchanged from $70 million annual savings
โ‡— accelerating

Unchanged. After cutting operating expenses excluding restructuring by 38% in the first half and 22% in the third quarter, the drugmaker plans additional sequential cost reductions in the fourth quarter.

FY26 U.S. Vascepa volumes Broadly stable
๐Ÿ † unchanged from Stable throughout FY26
โ‡’ stable

Unchanged. The company still expects U.S. prescription volumes to hold steady through the end of the year, supported by its 47% share of the icosapent ethyl market.

โ“ Key Questions

What were Recordati's European royalties in the third quarter?

Total licensing and royalty revenue slipped from $3.1 million in the second quarter to $2.7 million in the third. Without the standalone Recordati royalty figure from the 10-Q filing, investors cannot verify if European partner sales in dollars grew alongside unit demand.

Did U.S. net prices fall between the second and third quarters?

U.S. product revenue dropped 11% from the second quarter to $28.5 million while market share stayed near 47%. Management previously said price resets happen in the first quarter, so the sequential drop needs an explanation.

Have U.S. insurers renewed exclusive coverage for 2027?

Amarin's volume outlook only covers the rest of 2026 because pharmacy benefit manager contracts reset each January. Losing an exclusive contract in 2027 would cause a step-down in the company's main revenue stream.

What will trigger the unused $50 million buyback plan?

Cash reached $323.4 million with no debt and the restructuring is finished, yet Amarin has not bought back a single share since winning court approval in 2024 or named an outcome from its Barclays review.
