Advantage Solutions (ADV) Q3 2026 earnings review
Advantage Solutions grows event sales, but brand losses cut profit
Advantage Solutions, which runs grocery sampling events and manages store shelves for packaged-goods brands, grew its event and retail units while its brand-agency arm shrank. Sales from continuing businesses excluding pass-through costs edged up 1% to $782 million, but Ebitda excluding one-offs fell 12% to $85 million as brand clients pulled back and event wages rose. Chief executive Dave Peacock kept the full-year outlook unchanged and launched a restructuring plan to save $25 million a year.
| Sales excluding pass-through costs and sold units | +1% from a year ago ($782M reported) |
|---|---|
| Ebitda excluding one-offs and sold units | -12% from a year ago ($85.4M reported, -14.2%) |
| Net debt to 12-month Ebitda | 4.6x up from 4.5x last quarter (target: under 3.5x) |
| Full-year sales and Ebitda outlook | Unchanged capital spending cut to $40–45M |
⚖️ Verdict: 🔴 Bearish
The story got worse because profit in the Branded Services division fell by more than half, forcing another round of job cuts and pushing the debt ratio up to 4.6 times Ebitda. In addition, the firm paused its Workday human-resources software rollout and took an $8 million write-off, clouding the technology savings planned for 2027. The bright spot: Retailer Services profit rebounded and overdue customer bills cleared faster, lifting cash flow.
The question now is whether the $25 million cost-cutting plan adds to 2027 profit or merely plugs the hole from lost brand clients. If client departures slow, Ebitda will recover and bring down the debt load; if brands keep pulling work in-house, the savings will be absorbed. Fourth-quarter Branded Services Ebitda will provide the first test.
🐂 Bull Case
Retailer Services Rebounded and Billing Delays Eased
Retailer Services, which manages store shelves and private-label brands for grocers, bounced back from second-quarter cost overruns. Segment sales edged up 1.0% from a year ago to $251.0 million, helped by new business wins at its Daymon private-brand unit. Segment Ebitda excluding one-offs jumped 43.3% to $32.3 million, lifting its margin on net sales by 3.8 percentage points to 12.9%.
A one-time boost helped, but Advantage Solutions said segment profit still grew by double digits "even when excluding tariff refunds, reflecting stronger cost management". At the same time, billing delays from a software rollout started to clear. Collection time fell to 60 days of sales, which helped the marketing agency generate $98.7 million in cash flow before interest and taxes.
What to watch: Retailer Services profit in the fourth quarter, when the segment faces a tougher comparison from a year ago and has no tariff refund to help.
Experiential Services Grew, But Wages Ate the Profit
Experiential Services, the unit that runs in-store product tastings and sampling events, is both the company's main growth engine and a test of whether labor inflation caps its margins. Segment revenue rose 14.3% from a year ago to $431.6 million, or 11.5% excluding client pass-through costs, as daily events rose 13.5%.
That top-line growth barely reached the bottom line. Segment Ebitda excluding one-offs rose just 0.3% to $35.4 million, and its margin on net revenue fell 1.3 percentage points to 11.6%. Advantage Solutions spent more on wages, recruiting and staffing to keep events staffed, though it noted "Pricing actions starting to offset labor investments that will help sustain service levels and meet long-term demand".
What to watch: Fourth-quarter Experiential Ebitda margin. The company plans for double-digit profit growth and margin expansion in the fourth quarter, which will test whether price increases can outrun wage costs.
🐻 Bear Case
Branded Services Lost Half Its Profit
Branded Services, the brokerage and marketing unit for packaged-goods makers, has shrunk every quarter for over a year. The slide worsened in the third quarter because of "client losses and unfavorable business mix, with declines in higher-margin headquarter sales and agency".
- Total segment revenue: $231.2 million, down 20.0% from a year ago
- Revenue excluding pass-through costs: $225.1 million, down 12.8% (down 11% excluding sold businesses)
- Segment Ebitda excluding one-offs: $17.6 million, down 57.7% (down 55% excluding sold businesses)
- Segment Ebitda margin on net revenue: 7.8%, down from 16.1% a year ago
The $24.1 million profit drop in this one division wiped out all the gains in the rest of the business. That pushed company-wide cost of revenues up by 1.0 percentage point to 85.9% of sales, while overhead rose 0.6 percentage points to 6.8%. Chief executive Dave Peacock expects fourth-quarter profit in the division to improve from the third quarter as new job cuts take hold, but not from a year ago.
What to watch: Branded Services Ebitda in the fourth quarter. Anything at or below $17.6 million would show that client losses are outrunning the new cost cuts.
Paused Software Rollout Triggered $8 Million Write-Off
For two years, Advantage Solutions has pitched a three-part software overhaul — SAP for accounting, Oracle, and Workday for human resources — as the engine of 2027 margin expansion. Last quarter, management said it was on track to finish the heavy lifting this year, with the new human-resources platform as the final step.
This quarter, the company halted that rollout. Its presentation disclosed that a "Pause of the Workday implementation resulted in a $8.1 million non-cash impairment charge for capitalized implementation costs", while the team reviews cheaper options. That write-off sits against the claim in the release that technology investments are driving the next phase of transformation. Pausing the project saves $5 million to $10 million in capital spending this year, but it leaves a staffing business of tens of thousands of field workers without the unified human-resources system it paid to build.
What to watch: What the company decides to do with its remaining Workday contract commitments in the fourth-quarter report, which will show whether further write-offs or termination fees follow.
Debt Load Edged Up to 4.6x Ebitda
Advantage Solutions carries $1.45 billion in net debt and has a long-term goal to bring that below 3.5 times annual Ebitda excluding one-offs. Instead of falling, the ratio ticked up from 4.5 times in the second quarter to 4.6 times in the third — which the presentation called "essentially unchanged from the second quarter".
Net debt fell by $35.5 million in the quarter as the firm collected overdue bills and slowed share buybacks to $2.3 million, by our math. Yet the debt ratio still worsened because twelve-month Ebitda dropped by $14.2 million to $316.6 million. Moreover, by our math, the middle of the reaffirmed full-year outlook points to fourth-quarter net revenue falling about 5.4% and Ebitda slipping 0.8% from a year ago, excluding sold businesses. Until annual profit stops shrinking, cash debt paydowns barely move the leverage ratio.
What to watch: Twelve-month Ebitda at year-end. If fourth-quarter profit falls from a year ago, net leverage will finish 2026 near 4.5 times despite seasonal cash inflows.

New Restructuring Targets $25 Million in Savings
"The restructuring announced today is expected to generate approximately $25 million in near-term annualized savings net of investment while improving the profitability of our Branded Services business," chief executive Dave Peacock said. Advantage Solutions will cut management layers, vendors and real estate mostly in the fourth quarter, with another $5 million in savings planned into 2027, while "Protecting the two organizational layers closest to clients while reinvesting some savings into client-facing talent".
💲 Other KPIs
Uncollected customer bills fell 4.0% from last quarter, when a new accounting system slowed invoicing. Days sales outstanding — the average time customers take to pay — shortened to 60 days, and the US outsourcer plans to reach about 55 days in the fourth quarter, unlocking more cash for debt paydown.
Standard free cash flow — operating cash flow of $51.0 million after interest and taxes, minus $10.4 million of capital spending — turned positive after a negative second quarter, though it fell 22.1% from a year ago. For the first nine months, standard free cash flow reached $37.0 million, up from a $12.8 million outflow last year.
Share count fell 5.7% from a year ago and 0.8% from last quarter. After spending about $15 million on buybacks in the second quarter, the St. Louis group spent $2.3 million in the third quarter by our math, stating it will now buy shares only to offset employee stock awards.
🔮 Guidance
Unchanged. The full-year plan still calls for underlying net sales growth of 0% to 3%, or 1.5% at the middle of the range. Because net revenue grew in the first nine months, by our math the middle of that range leaves fourth-quarter net sales down about 5.4% from a year ago, which the presentation attributes to market uncertainty and tough comparisons.
Unchanged. Advantage Solutions still expects full-year Ebitda excluding one-offs to fall between 0% and 5% from last year's base excluding sold businesses. By our math, the middle of the range (-2.5%) leaves fourth-quarter Ebitda at about $84.8 million, down 0.8% from a year ago — a smaller drop than the third quarter's 12% underlying decline.
Unchanged. The target for cash flow before interest, taxes and one-off restructuring bills stays at $262.5 million at the middle of the range. With $212.1 million generated in the first nine months, by our math the plan requires $50.4 million in the fourth quarter, down from $75.0 million in last year's fourth quarter.
Unchanged. The retail agency still plans to turn about a quarter of its full-year Ebitda into standard free cash flow after interest and taxes, excluding one-off debt refinancing fees. Reaching roughly $78 million for the year requires about $41 million of standard free cash flow in the fourth quarter as customer billing days drop toward 55.
Cut. Expected full-year interest cost dropped by $5 million, the second $5 million reduction in two quarters after starting the year at $160 million to $170 million. With $113.5 million recorded in the first nine months, by our math the outlook leaves $41.5 million for the fourth quarter, helped by a new $50 million interest-rate swap.
Cut. The capital spending plan dropped by $7.5 million at the middle of the range after a $5 million cut last quarter, driven by the pause of the Workday software project. By our math, that leaves $11.3 million for the fourth quarter, and management still expects spending to step down to $35 million to $40 million in 2027.
❓ Key Questions
What will the new restructuring cost in cash?
Advantage Solutions promised $25 million in annual savings from its fourth-quarter restructuring, but said it will disclose the size and timing of the charges later. Investors need the cash severance and lease-exit bill to see how much of the savings actually reaches debt paydown.
What happens to the remaining Workday software commitments?
Pausing the Workday human-resources rollout triggered an $8.1 million write-off, and management is still evaluating options for its remaining program commitments. The question is whether abandoning the software carries contract termination fees or stalls back-office cost reductions in 2027.
How much did tariff refunds lift Retailer Services profit?
Retailer Services Ebitda jumped 43.3% to $32.3 million, and the release noted growth was still in the double digits excluding tariff refunds. Because double-digit growth could mean anything from 10% to 40%, the exact refund dollar amount is needed to judge the division's true margin recovery.
When does the company expect net leverage below 3.5x?
Net debt to Ebitda ticked up to 4.6 times in the third quarter even as net debt fell by $35.5 million, because twelve-month Ebitda shrank. Management repeats its 3.5-times target every quarter without attaching a year or the Ebitda level required to reach it.
