ADT (ADT) Q3 2026 earnings review

ADT equipment sales jump, but its recurring revenue stands still

ADT, the US home security provider, grew revenue by selling more hardware upfront while its monthly subscription base stood still. Total sales rose 4% because upfront equipment installations jumped 32%, but recurring monthly revenue held at $360 million. Profit excluding one-offs fell 6% on higher equipment and overhead costs, though an 11% lower share count from earlier buybacks lifted per-share profit by 4%. Chief executive Jim DeVries called the core metrics stable, and the company withdrew its full-year outlook after agreeing to a cash buyout by Thrive Holdings.

⚖️ Verdict: 🔴 Bearish

The fundamental story got worse because core profitability and subscription growth weakened while the buyout froze the forward outlook. Upfront hardware costs and overhead pulled operating margins down by nearly 3 percentage points, and customer cancellation rates stayed stuck at 13.1% for a fourth straight quarter. On the positive side, nine-month cash flow is up 46% and ADT added installation and retail partnerships with Apple and Walmart.

For operations, the question now is whether shifting customers to upfront hardware purchases builds a stickier base or only pulls revenue forward before installations flatten in 2027. If the new platform improves retention, cancellation rates will finally drop below 13.1%; if it is just an accounting shift, total revenue growth will stall once the transition ends next quarter. The third-quarter 10-Q filing's disclosure of gross customer additions will give the next read.

🐂 Bull Case

🟢 strengthening CAPITAL ALLOCATION

Buybacks Lifted Per-Share Profit as Earnings Fell

ADT's cash generation and earlier share buybacks carried its per-share results this quarter. For the first nine months of 2026, cash flow after customer acquisition spending and interest rate swaps (Adjusted Free Cash Flow) jumped 46% to $1,037 million. The home security provider used that cash to retire 89 million shares for $617 million year to date, though buybacks slowed to 3 million shares for $23 million in the third quarter.

Because those buybacks cut the diluted share count by 11.0% from a year ago, profit per share excluding one-offs rose 4.3% to $0.24 even while actual profit excluding one-offs fell 5.9% to $176 million. In the third quarter alone, Adjusted Free Cash Flow rose 4.3% to $217 million, leaving the business $85 million short of its prior full-year cash flow target with one quarter left.

What to watch: fourth-quarter cash flow from operations when the annual report arrives. A reading above $85 million of Adjusted Free Cash Flow would confirm ADT met its full-year cash goal through lower equipment spending rather than one-off tax timing.

🟢 strengthening PRODUCT

New Apple and Walmart Partnerships Expand Reach

ADT is trying to lower its customer acquisition costs by selling through retail partners and using artificial intelligence (AI) in its call centers. This quarter the company launched ADT Partner Services, a program where its technicians "will install and service select products for Apple Retail and its customers in the U.S. beginning this fall".

The security provider also put ADT Blu, its do-it-yourself security system, onto Walmart.com, and added Unusual Activity Alerts to its ADT+ smart home app. In customer care, ADT expanded AI call routing and transcription tools, following through on last quarter's plan, though it still gives no dollar figure for cost savings or retail sales.

What to watch: whether the quarterly filing discloses subscriber additions or revenue from ADT Blu and the Apple partnership. Without a disclosed customer count, these retail channels remain product announcements rather than a proven offset to shrinking traditional installations.

🐻 Bear Case

🔴🔴 persistent GROWTH contradicts narrative

Equipment Sales Carried Revenue While Subscriptions Stalled

Chief executive Jim DeVries said "ADT delivered solid third quarter results, with revenue growth, strong year-to-date cash generation and stable core operating metrics". The standing debate is whether ADT's shift to outright equipment sales — where new customers buy their security hardware upfront instead of leasing it — drives real growth or just pulls revenue forward. This quarter's numbers show equipment sales did all the work while the subscription base stood still.

  • Installation and product revenue: $265 million, up 32.5% from a year ago
  • Monitoring and services revenue: $1,084 million, down 1.3% (or down 0.6% by our math stripping the sold apartment business)
  • Recurring monthly revenue (RMR), the monthly value of active customer contracts: $360 million, unchanged from last quarter and up 0.2% from a year ago by our math on a like-for-like basis

Total revenue rose 3.9% only because ADT recognized more hardware revenue upfront. Because that accounting transition finishes at the end of 2026, top-line growth will lose its only engine next year unless the subscription base starts growing again.

What to watch: fourth-quarter recurring monthly revenue. If RMR stays stuck at $360 million while hardware comparisons get harder, total revenue growth will drop toward zero in early 2027.

🔴🔴 persistent MARGIN

Upfront Equipment Costs Pulled Profit Down

When ADT sells hardware upfront under its outright sales model, it also books the cost of that equipment and the installation right away instead of spreading it over several years. That shift, along with higher overhead, pushed operating profit down 1.3% to $311 million even though revenue grew 3.9%.

  • Installation cost of revenue: $133 million, up 50% and rising 3.0 percentage points of total revenue to 9.9%
  • Selling, general, and administrative (advertising and overhead) costs: $400 million, up 7.5% by our math stripping last year's $12 million goodwill write-down, adding 1.0 percentage point of revenue
  • Adjusted EBITDA (operating profit before depreciation and subscriber acquisition amortization): $665 million, down 1.6%, with the margin falling 2.8 percentage points to 49.3%

Headline net income rose 7% to $153 million only because last year included the $12 million write-down and higher interest costs. Stripping out one-offs, income from continuing operations fell 5.9% to $176 million, showing that AI call-center tools are not yet offsetting higher hardware and overhead costs.

What to watch: selling, general, and administrative expenses as a share of revenue in the quarterly filing. If overhead keeps rising faster than sales, operating margins will stay below 50%.

🔴 persistent CASH

Billion-Dollar Debt Wall Moves Into Current Liabilities

ADT carries $7.78 billion in total book debt and has a long-term goal to push net debt below 2.5 times Adjusted EBITDA, down from 2.8 times last quarter. Instead of paying down debt this quarter, the company borrowed an extra $100 million under its First Lien Term Loan A due 2030 and held $228 million in cash.

At the same time, current debt maturities — borrowings due within 12 months — jumped to $1,242 million at September 30 from $310 million at year-end, because $1.0 billion of low-rate 3.375% notes mature in August 2027. Total book debt is up $92 million since December by our math, so leverage is not falling toward the target.

What to watch: the debt footnote in the third-quarter 10-Q filing. It will show how much of the $3.5 billion in interest rate swaps expired in September and how much cash interest costs will rise before the August 2027 notes are refinanced.

🔴 persistent DISCLOSURE

Risks this quarter didn't answer

Several standing concerns around customer additions and long-term targets went unanswered because ADT omitted key metrics from its release and cancelled call questions.

  • Gross subscriber and RMR additions: not in the release after falling 22% and 17% last quarter; bulk purchases dropped to 8,000 accounts for $9 million, down from 15,000 a year ago, and the 10-Q filing will show total additions.
  • Customer attrition (the share of recurring revenue lost to cancellations over 12 months): stuck at 13.1% for a fourth straight quarter, missing the earlier H1 improvement goal and sitting 2.1 percentage points above the 11% target.
  • 2027 cash flow headwinds and 2030 subscriber targets: untested in the release because ADT withdrew all financial plans; fourth-quarter cash taxes and working capital will show if the first-half cash boost is reversing.

Thrive Holdings Buyout Ends Public Outlook

On October 29, 2026, ADT agreed to be acquired by Thrive Holdings for $10.00 per share in cash, with the deal expected to close in the first quarter of 2027. Because of the pending buyout, "the Company is not providing financial guidance and is withdrawing previously issued guidance", and management will take no questions on the earnings call.

Customer acquisition and capital spending (26Q3) $235 million
⇘ decelerating

Capital spending — which includes buying customer contracts from dealers, installing company-owned alarm systems, and buying equipment — fell 21.1% from a year ago by our math, dropping to 17.4% of revenue. Spending on company-owned subscriber systems fell 33.7% to $65 million because more customers bought their hardware upfront.

Provision for credit losses (26Q3) $52 million
⇘ decelerating

The quarterly charge for unpaid customer bills and inventory losses dipped 5.5% from $55 million a year ago. For the first nine months of 2026, however, credit loss provisions are still up 9.0% to $170 million because ADT records expected bad-debt losses upfront when customers finance outright hardware purchases.

🔮 Guidance

FY26 Total revenue growth Withdrawn
✕ withdrawn, was Up ~2%
⇒ stable

Withdrawn. ADT pulled its full-year outlook because of the pending Thrive Holdings buyout. Through nine months, revenue is up 2.3% to $3,940 million, which leaves $1,292 million (up 1.2% from a year ago) in the fourth quarter to meet the old 2% target by our math.

FY26 Profit per share, excluding one-offs Withdrawn
✕ withdrawn, was Up ~2%
⇒ stable

Withdrawn. The home security group retracted its full-year earnings plan alongside the buyout announcement. Nine-month profit per share excluding one-offs sits at $0.70, leaving $0.21 in the fourth quarter to reach the ~2% growth target ($0.91) that management set last quarter.

FY26 Adjusted Free Cash Flow (including swaps) growth Withdrawn

⇘ decelerating

Withdrawn. Management pulled the full-year cash flow target after raising it from 20% to 30% last quarter. With $1,037 million generated in the first nine months (up 46.3%), the business needs only $85 million in the fourth quarter by our math to hit the old $1,122 million mark.

❓ Key Questions

How many gross subscribers and RMR dollars did ADT add?

The earnings release omitted gross customer additions and gross recurring monthly revenue additions after both fell sharply last quarter. Because bulk account purchases dropped to 8,000 from 15,000 a year ago, investors need the quarterly filing's addition numbers to see if direct sales stabilised.

What are the customer counts and prices for ADT Blu?

Chief executive Jim DeVries previously said volumes for the do-it-yourself ADT Blu system would grow in the third and fourth quarters, and ADT just added Walmart.com as a seller. Without subscriber counts or monthly revenue per user, it is unclear if DIY sales dilute the core business.

How much will September's swap expirations raise cash interest?

Interest rate swaps covering $3.5 billion of debt were set to expire in September 2026, and $1.0 billion of 3.375% notes now sit in current liabilities ahead of their August 2027 maturity. The quarterly filing needs to show the new cash interest run-rate for 2027.

Did the retail installment contract allowance rise again in Q3?

In the first half of 2026, ADT's reserve for unpaid equipment installment loans jumped 66% to $62 million. While the third-quarter income statement provision eased slightly to $52 million, the balance sheet footnote will show whether customer non-payment disconnects are still building.
